Thank you Red Barn Restaurant in Vestal, NY for my love of baseball. Thank you all small businesses for sponsoring sports teams that enable kids to fall in love with a sport.

Other than my family, there probably isn't anything that's given me more pleasure than the sport of baseball. Red Barn Restaurant was the sponsor of my first team. The owner and the restaurant have long since passed on, but my passion for the sport lives on.

Small businesses truly are the background of this country, not just for the jobs they create but also for the communities they create. Patronize your fellow small businesses and you will be serving your community in more ways than one.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/TheE-comBlog/~4/RrazH1jcYl4" height="1" width="1"/>

Aug 10, A Bird In The Hand...

The four major networks, ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox are holding back 30 of fall ads that they usually pre-sell to advertisers because they think market rates are too low right now. They want to wait and see if they can charge higher rates in the fall if the market will bear it.

As a small business owner that rubs me the wrong way. Most of us are happy to take the money from a customer who has the confidence in us to do a good job for them. Especially in these times.

With most of us using TIVO these days to avoid watching commercials the networks better take what they can get...now.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/TheE-comBlog/~4/tvIDzNOEzSs" height="1" width="1"/>

Aug 6, Buy From Yourself

In the September issue of Success Magazine (which everyone should subscribe to), publisher Darren Hardy provides a great idea for you to see how well your company is serving it's customers. His idea is to make a purchase from yourself.

The ideas is to buy something from your own online store, have it shipped to you, then return it. This exercise will give you a good taste of what your customers are experiencing when they interact with your company. You'll see what your company is doing well, and what areas, if any, need improvement.

Give it a try. And give Success Magazine a try. It really is an outstanding magazine.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/TheE-comBlog/~4/ttRwa78TwHE" height="1" width="1"/>

Jul 31, No Hiding Behind Twitter

Twitter is one tool to build your business. One of many you should be using. It is not an excuse to not call personally on prospects and customers. Impose limits on the amount of time each day you'll be on Twitter and stick to it. Spend the rest of your time talking to prospects, customers, employees. That's really how you build a business.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/TheE-comBlog/~4/t04GuZZkiT0" height="1" width="1"/>

Jul 23, What is "G?"

In January PepsiCo's Gatorade sports drink changed their container to just "G". It used to say "Gatorade", now it says "G". People went to the cooler section at their local 7-11 and said "what's G?" Then they bought something else. Since the change Gatorade sales are down 17 and are a drag on PepsiCo's earnings. Kind of reminds you of when Coke changed their formula, doesn't it?

If you have a brand that is over 30 years old and universally recognized you might not want to change it so radically that your consumers don't recognize you. If your brand is 3 years old and gaining recognition you might not want to change it. If it ain't broke don't fix it.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/TheE-comBlog/~4/8KffA_8DtIA" height="1" width="1"/>

Jul 19, Goodbye Walter

America is mourning the passing of the most respected journalist of all time, Walter Cronkite. Walter delivered the evening news for 21 years and was hailed as "The most trusted man in America."

What made Walter Cronkite a legend, while so many others in the same profession fade into obscurity? Two traits stick out as difference makers.

First, he was consistent. His demeanor and delivery were always the same. People like what they're familiar with, and by being consistent the public became familiar and comfortable with him.

Second, he was genuine and sincere. By being genuine we trusted his message. There wasn't any doubt that he was telling us the truth. His sign off even reflected it, "That's the way it is..."

Is your Internet marketing approach consistent and genuine? Are your offline marketing tools consistent and genuine? Are you consistent and genuine?

Goodbye Walter. You'll be missed.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/TheE-comBlog/~4/hrPzhrVnuC8" height="1" width="1"/>

Jul 18, Harry Potter and Ultimate Fighting

Why are Harry Potter and Ultimate Fighting so popular?

Have you noticed how people light up when they talk with a friend about these two social phenomenons? They've found another member of their "community." If nobody else liked the things we have an interest in we probably aren't going to stay interested ourselves for very long. We want to feel like we're part of a group that likes what we like. It's human nature.

To establish your brand do some homework and find out what people are interested in that relates to your product or service. Then actively engage them online or offline. Let people know that they can be part of your group, that there are many others like them that like you, and that they can be connected to all of them through you. That's how you build brand loyalty.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/TheE-comBlog/~4/8KffA_8DtIA" height="1" width="1"/>

Another weekend gone and another week ahead. The dog days of summer are upon us. Salespeople are either on vacation or hanging out in their air conditioned offices shuffling papers.

What about you? What are you going to do this week to grow your business? Something that is unique and daring. What company have you avoided calling on because you think they're too big? What owner or executive are you afraid to call?

Make that call tomorrow. Go for it. What have you got to lose? They're not a customer anyway. By calling on them you'll actually gain...a good feeling about yourself for facing your fears. Go for broke this week...you just might hit it big.

Jul 12, Bad Times are Green Lights for Smart Businesses

I read this morning where CIT Leasing was contemplating filing for bankruptcy. The article caught my eye because I leased phone systems through CIT several years ago.

This is unfortunate for CIT, but it is a reality check for small business owners. I've seen a false sense of security lately among business owners, primarily because the stock market has had some impressive gains.

The CIT problem is a green light for smart business owners to keep implementing smart, cost effective marketing strategies while the economy languishes. It's still not time to celebrate the end of this recession. Stay focused and keep marketing. It will pay off for you in a big way when the tide turns, which it will.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/TheE-comBlog/~4/RrazH1jcYl4" height="1" width="1"/>

I received a phone call today from a gentleman in Canada desperate for help. He told me that he had recently lost his job and was in need of a website that would make him "some fast money". There was nothing humorous about his desperation to make money quickly.

I shared with him that there is no "fast money" to be made with a new website. I let him know that a website has to build trust with the site visitor, and that this takes time and it takes both quantity and quality of content. It always comes down to quality of content. There are no magic SEO fixes for a site that has no content, or has poorly developed content. Spend your time and money wisely and produce content that will help your visitors accomplish their goals. The money will follow.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/TheE-comBlog/~4/bN5MWdE1jAk" height="1" width="1"/>

May 10, Three Things To Check Today

All of the tools you use require occasional maintenance. Your car, your body, your website to name a few. Here are three quick maintenance items you can do today to help your website's performance:

1.) Do a spell check on each page. You'd be surprised how many sites have simple words misspelled. Spelling errors are not going to impress potential customers that are detail oriented.

2.) Click on all of your links and make sure they're working. Again, little things make a difference. Clicking on a link because I'm interested in something and then getting an error page doesn't engender confidence.

3.) See how easy it is for someone to contact you via your website. Your phone number and a contact form should be on every page. Isn't that what your site is for? To get new contacts? It should be super easy for people to make contact with you. If it isn't they'll go to another site and try it there.

Check your website regularly and maintain this valuable asset for your business.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/TheE-comBlog/~4/iLYD1Kv7rPU" height="1" width="1"/>

May 9, It's Time to Accelerate Your Marketing

Pretty good news from the financial world this week. Bernanke said we're bottoming out economically, the unemployment rate climb is slowing and consumer confidence continues to rise.

What does this mean for your business? It means that it's time for you to accelerate into the curve. Momentum is shifting to the positive side and you need to be part of it, not just an observer.

Indecision is one of the traits of the mediocre business owner. Decide to accelerate your Internet marketing efforts. Add more pages to your website, add more blog entries, get more inbound links, participate more in online social networking...try harder and decide that you will grow your business via the web. Don't ride the brake, step on the gas!<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/TheE-comBlog/~4/RrazH1jcYl4" height="1" width="1"/>

Apr 18, The End of Egotism

I've spent the last couple of weeks working on a project for a group of financial advisors. As part of the project I spent a number of hours evaluating websites for both financial advisors and the companies they do business with.

What struck me was the high percentage of websites that were built as online shrines to these individuals and firms. In order to gain entry to some of them you first have to view a video touting their skills and reputation. What the video doesn't mention is the fact that their clients' investments have lost 70 of their value in the last 18 months and that they want to lynch them.

Many of these websites are very gaudy and pretentious. I don't think that is going to be a very successful branding strategy for anyone in the financial industry these days (think AIG bonuses).

Peggy Noonan's column in the Wall Street Journal today is titled <A HREF="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123992073614326997.html"target="_blank">"Goodbye Bland Affluence...Get ready for authenticity chic."</A> Ms. Noonan discusses how many American's are tired of playing the role of the successful, wealthy, captivating and beautiful individual and are now happy to forgo hair dye and botox and spend time at home eating some tomatoes from their own garden while playing board games with their children.

Financial advisors and their firms might want to read this column and brand themselves as people that want to help us stabilize ourselves financially so we can enjoy our lives with our families and friends. I want my advisor to show me he's feeling the pain I feel, not that he can make his website scream how nice his offices are in the new high rise downtown.

Evaluate your website from the vantage point of today's consumer and give them what they're yearning for: truth, simplicity and stability. May you enjoy the same.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/TheE-comBlog/~4/hWulBcya0BE" height="1" width="1"/>

Mar 31, I'd rather be a turtle than a puma

You've probably looked at a flashy, big website and were absolutely wowed by it (see www.myvemma.com/bobphillipsvemma). It may have been a big 200+ page site with alot of graphics and flash imagery. It may have had video and podcasts as part of the site. That's all well and good, but it's important to realize that the biggest, best website was built one page at a time.

The puma website builder sets a goal to build a 20 page website, works night and day for three days and it's finished. He then waits for traffic that never comes. The turtle website builder builds a page or two every other day, day in and day out for a year and ends up with a 100+ page website and a ton of traffic and new customers.

All you plodders need to keep moving forward, adding to your site on a consistent basis. By doing this, you're getting the attention of the search engines, but more important, you're building a website that is rich in content and is a useful resource for your targeted audience. Be a Steady Eddie, not a Flashy Freddie.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/TheE-comBlog/~4/YZQH_vdtGRU" height="1" width="1"/>

Mar 19, The Hochuli Brand

The NFL is considering a rule change because of a bad call by a referee named Ed Hochuli last fall. It was a very bad call by a very good referee, one of the best at his craft. But all of the great games he called will forever be overshadowed by one game, and just one bad call. How could it happen?

The strength of a company's brand is determined by what you think of when you hear that company's name. Think McDonalds...you think golden arches. Think Nike...you think the "swoosh" logo, or "Just do it." Think Ed Hochuli...think blown call, think rule change .

There were many blown calls last year, why is Hochuli's so infamous? Because he admitted it! He apologized for it! He gave interviews and publicly flogged himself over it. His family went public and said he was sick over it. He became "branded" with that call.

He's an honorable man. He owned up to his mistake. He should be forgiven! Doesn't matter. It's the brand the public gave him, deserved or undeserved. Doesn't seem fair, does it? It's not, but it is what it is. The people have spoken.

What could he have done different? Kept his mouth shut, that's what. Should've let it blow over, kept quiet, stayed invisible all week. It would have gone away. People detest Barry Bonds over steroids because he has publicly made an issue over using them and therefore has linked himself with them. People let Jason Giambi slide because he kept his mouth shut and kept his head low for months after he was implicated for steroid use.

The old saying "there's no such thing as bad publicity" is false. Just ask Michael Jackson, Paris Hilton, Roger Clemens...and Ed Hochuli. Sometimes when it comes to your brand, silence really is golden.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/TheE-comBlog/~4/8KffA_8DtIA" height="1" width="1"/>

Mar 18, "What's on sale?"

If I walk into Macy's to buy a dress shirt this weekend I'm going to go to the men's department and look around to see if they have any dress shirts on sale. If they don't I'm then going to several other stores in the mall to see if they have shirts on sale. If they do, and if I like the brand, I'll buy the shirts there.

The same thing will happen if I go to Macys.com. I'll be looking for sales and then deciding what to do based on that.

Point is your e-commerce website is looked at the same way by many of your site visitors. Most of us shop online like we do at the mall: we're looking for a good deal. Now more than ever. Consider having a sale item on your splash page so that the first thing visitors see is that you are offering something at a discount. You're not going to sell everyone because of that, but you will have established a bond by showing your visitor that you are cognizant of their need to receive special pricing. That little bit of goodwill will make you many new customers and new sales over the course of a year.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/TheE-comBlog/~4/ttRwa78TwHE" height="1" width="1"/>

Mar 17, You need Pay Per Click in this economy

Yes, you do need Pay Per Click (PPC) in this economy. I know you don't want to spend right now. All of your friends, and your own instincts, are telling you to "sit tight, wait this out, see what happens". Wrong!

Here are three good reasons for you to be doing some PPC marketing:

1.) The price has dropped. You can now buy your best keywords at a discount, meaning it costs you less to get a motivated buyer to your website. Would you rather pay full price or a discounted price?

2.) People are still buying your products on the web every day. If you're not letting them know you're there then you are losing the business.

3.) Your competition has the "bunker mentality". Not all of them, but most. And while they are waiting it out you need to be getting more market share...at a discount!<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/TheE-comBlog/~4/XPOA0xGxf1g" height="1" width="1"/>
