Temporary sidewalk closure at Eighth and Broadway

The city of Columbia Public Works Department announces a temporary closure of the sidewalk at the corner of Eighth and Broadway on Wednesday, Jan. 11. Boone County National Bank will have the sidewalk temporarily closed while crews remove holiday lights. This work will result in the closure of sidewalk throughout the day on Wednesday, weather permitting. While crews work on the Broadway portion, Eighth Street will remain open; when the Eighth Street side is closed, Broadway sidewalk will be open. Pedestrians are asked to use an alternate route.

Temporary Sidewalk Closure on Ninth

The city of Columbia Public Works Department announces that beginning today, Milan Contracting, who is working for MMII Inc., will temporarily close a portion of sidewalk along Ninth Street. The sidewalk on Ninth Street between Woodson Way and the Chipotle restaurant will be closed for approximately 25 days, weather permitting.

This closure is due to excavation work for a new mixed use apartment building at 308 Ninth Street. This closure will only affect the sidewalk on the east side of Ninth Street. Pedestrians are asked to use an alternate route.

The city of Columbia Public Works Department announces a temporary sidewalk closure along the south side of Walnut Street from Eighth Street east to the alley. Koonse Glass is replacing windows on the north side of the Guitar Building. This work will result in the sidewalk closure through January, weather permitting. This closure will only affect the sidewalk on the south side of Walnut Street. Pedestrians are asked to use an alternate route.

Public Art Opportunity: Short Street Parking Garage

The City of Columbia Office of Cultural Affairs (OCA) invites artists residing in Missouri to apply for a public art project for the city's planned parking garage on Short Street. The art budget for the parking garage project is $47,000.

The Short Street parking garage will be located in The District adjacent to the North Village Arts District. Once completed, the multi-level facility will provide more than 400 parking spaces. This project will utilize pre-cast fagade panels and will be coordinated with the design of an adjacent boutique hotel and downtown Columbia architecture.

At this point in the process, artists should submit qualifications only, not design proposals. Applications will be evaluated on the basis of artistic and technical merit and strength of past work. Applications will be reviewed by the Standing Committee on Public Art. The committee will determine the three finalists to be invited to develop preliminary design proposals. Each artist will be offered an honorarium of $2,000 for time and materials in developing the preliminary proposal. The preliminary design proposals will be made available for public comment and a recommendation will be made by the Standing Committee on Public Art to the Commission on Cultural Affairs and final approval by City Council.

The Short Street garage project is a component of Columbia's Percent for Art program, established in 1997, which requires that one percent of total construction costs for eligible new and renovation projects be set aside for site-specific public art.

CID Board Applications Due

The Downtown Community Improvement District (CID) is seeking nominations for five, three-year terms on the board of directors. Board and committee members must fulfill a number of statutory requirements so be sure to check the guidelines if you are interested. Applications must be received in The District office at 11 S. Tenth St. by Friday, December 16, at noon.

CID Assessment Bills

If you're a property owner in the CID, you should be receiving your bill from the County Collector this week. It looks a little different than the old SBD bill, so we just wanted to give everyone a quick explanation.

First of all, it's the same assessment as before. We simply transferred it from the SBD to the CID after the CID petition was approved. You'll notice that the SBD assessment has been set at 0.

Secondly, you should receive the CID bill on a separate page (a nice lavender color, to be exact). This has more to do with internal bookkeeping by the County, rather than with any substantial change.

Like before, you need to remit your payments to the Boone County Collector.

Sewer work rescheduled on Walnut Street due to weather

Beginning Thursday, Nov. 10, Remsel Excavating, working for Trittenbach Development, will close Walnut Street from Hubbell Street to College Avenue for sewer repairs. Walnut Street will be closed in this area throughout the entire project, including the weekend. The work is expected to be complete on Thursday, Nov. 17, weather permitting. This work was originally scheduled for last week but had to be delayed due to rain.

Walnut Street will be closed to traffic between Hubbell Street and College Avenue to repair a sanitary sewer manhole and connect a new service line. Motorists are urged to exercise extreme caution when driving near the work area and use an alternate route during the construction work.

Sewer Work in First Alley North of Broadway

The city of Columbia Public Works Department will begin sewer repairs in the first alley north of Broadway, between Fifth and Sixth streets, on Saturday, Oct. 8, at 12:30 p.m. The alley will be closed to all thru traffic during the repairs.

Buildings along the alley will still be accessible via the alley entrance on Sixth Street. The work is expected to be completed by Monday, Oct. 10, at 5 p.m., weather permitting. If the work is postponed due to inclement weather, it will be rescheduled at a later date.

6th & Cherry Garage Closed for Cleaning

Sixth and Cherry parking garage will be closed Oct. 5-7

COLUMBIA, MO (October 4, 2011) - The city of Columbia Public Works Department announces that on Wednesday, Oct. 5, at 6 a.m. crews will begin working on the Sixth and Cherry parking garage. Parking maintenance crews will wash and reseal the entire garage. This will require the garage be closed Oct. 5-7.

Individuals with parking permits for the Sixth and Cherry garage will need to park in the Fifth and Walnut garage permitted spaces during this maintenance work and display their existing permit hang tag. Hourly spaces are available in the Fifth and Walnut garage for visitors.

Council Approves Short Street Garage Designs

Last night, the Council approved the design plans for the Short Street Garage.

Initially looking at 5 stories and 340 spaces, the Council realized that 275 spaces are already leased, leaving only 65 left for the public. So instead, they recommended a 6-story garage with 410 spaces.

Short Street will go through, and will be slightly widened. The brick will be removed. A pocket park will be built on the corner of Short and Broadway to soften the entrance to the hotel and garage. The garage itself is designed to look like a row of traditional downtown buildings and will have a Percent for Art component, key to a city building that will anchor the arts district.

The proposed commercial/residential space is still under consideration by the Council, although the working design did incorporate this space.

Help Warm Up Columbia!

The weather's nice now but soon the temperatures will be dropping, leaving may Columbians out in the cold.

Warm Up Columbia is an annual coat and blanket drive coordinated by the Voluntary Action Center. It provides warm items such as coats, hats, mittens, blankets, etc. to low-income families, the elderly, and disabled individuals.

Commerce Bank is helping out by collecting items at all their locations, including their downtown locations at 9th & Broadway and 5th & Broadway. They need all sizes of new or gently used items--anything to keep a body warm!

Painting of District Traffic Box Underway

Local artist, Stephanie Foley has begun work the most recent installment of our"Traffic Box Art" Program at Seventh Street and Broadway. The goal of Traffic Box Art program, managed by the Office of Cultural Affairs, is to make traffic signal boxes more resistant to graffiti while at the same time contributing to the uniqueness of the downtown streetscape. After a successful pilot project in 2007, the Office of Cultural Affairs launched an annual program in cooperation with The District. The signal box addressed by Foley will be the fourth completed project in the series.

Each project begins with the Office of Cultural Affairs requesting proposals from mid-Missouri artists. Local artist Stephanie Foley has been selected by the city's Commission on Cultural Affairs and a sub-Committee of the Standing Committee on Public Art for her design concept. Ms. Foley is a long time Columbia resident and practicing artist. She holds a Bachelors Degree in Fine Arts from the University of Missouri and works independently as a freelance graphic designer. The honorarium to be provided is $1,500.

Comprehensive Plan Public Meeting

The public is invited to the second round of public engagement meetings related to Columbia Imagined, the city's new comprehensive plan, Sept. 28 at 7 p.m. in conference room 1A/1B of City Hall. During this meeting, the public will hear presentations describing "Who Are We?". Following the presentations attendees will be asked to provide feedback on the topics covered. This feedback will be used to assist the Comprehensive Plan Task Force, Planning and Zoning Commission and staff in further developing the plan.

Presentation topics will include descriptions of "Who Are We?" in the following categories:

* Sustainable/liveable communities

* Mobility, connectivity and accessibility

* Economic Development

* Environmental management

* Infrastructure

* Intergovernmental management

* Land use and growth management

Those interested in background information about the presentations should attend an informal question-and-answer session that will be held prior to the meeting at 6:30 p.m. that evening. Attendees can meet with members of the Comprehensive Plan Task Force, Planning and Zoning Commission and staff about the sources of information used to describe "Who Are We?". Sewer work on Waugh Street

The city of Columbia Public Works Department will perform sewer repairs on Waugh Street Saturday, Sept. 24, at 7:30 a.m. Sewer utility crews will repair a sanitary sewer main on Waugh Street approximately 50 feet north of Paquin Street, between Paquin Street and Locust Street. The work is expected to be completed by 5 p.m., weather permitting.

Waugh Street will be closed to traffic between Paquin Street and Hamilton Way during the sewer repairs. If the work is postponed due to inclement weather, it will be rescheduled for a later date.

The Roots 'n Blues 'n BBQ Festival is almost upon us and we want to make sure your Friday and Saturday is all about fun, not about parking. So, here's some advice for those planning on coming to The District. As always, we thank you for your patience.

Closed Streets
The following streets will be closed starting at 9 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 9, through 4 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 11:

Fourth, Fifth and Sixth streets between Broadway and Locust Street

Seventh Street between Cherry and Elm streets

Eighth Street between Locust and Elm streets

Cherry Street between Fourth and Seventh streets

Locust Street between Sixth and Ninth streets

Elm Street between Sixth and Ninth streets

Barricades
Streets with barricades will be manned by volunteers to assist visitors.

During festival hours, free parking will be available on a first-come, first-served basis in all city garages, lots and at parking meters on open streets. City parking garages are located at:

Sixth and Cherry -Locust Street entrance only, with additional designated accessible parking on the first level.

Festival hours run from 5-11 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 9, and from 11 a.m. - 11 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 10. Those who hold city parking permits are not guaranteed a space during the festival.

Parking is also available at the university's north campus garages.

Shakespeare's Pizza will provide complimentary bike valet parking at the corner of Ninth and Elm streets.

Vehicles will be subject to towing and city parking enforcement under the following conditions: when it's a matter of public safety, fire safety or hazardous conditions, such as blocking an entrance or exit; when a street is closed; or when a "no parking" notice is posted on meters or other areas.
