X-treme Activities @ PlanetCRuSH!!!

The June school holidays went by so quickly, it was almost impossible to believe that there were so many activities happening at our Cyber Wellness Center - The PlanetCRuSH.

Members of the PlanetCRuSH participated in the holiday activities aimed at getting them away from the cyberworld into"RL" (Real Life) or Real World.

Our youths had fun learning a new sport, Handball, and enjoyed the outdoors through a sandcastle building experience.

The sandcastle building experience had taught me to work well with people in my group. Building a sandcastle needs a lot of hardwork and teamwork is the most important thing to build a good sandcastle. I want to bring my parents down to build sandcastle together. - Yue Ming, 16

In the PlanetCRuSH Edition of the Amazing Race, the youths worked in groups, solving clues and discovering new things about Singapore as they traveled from Bukit Merah Central to Chinatown and all the way to the Esplanade.
Many made new friends and encountered new experiences through these activities.

What Can We do To Diversify?

PlanetCRuSH E-Sports Competition - SUCCESS!

The first PlanetCRuSH E-Sports competition in 2009 was held last week from 19th – 21st of March. It was a fun-filled and grueling competition where we see 9 different teams facing off for the top spots in our DOTA competition.

The competition was held at our PlanetCRuSH Cyber-wellness Center and saw close to 80 competitors and friends over the 3 days. The first 2 days saw the competitors fighting it out to make it to the top 2 teams in their group, before we ran the semi-final and final stages of our competition on the 3rd and final day.

The competition saw teams having to pit their wits and guts and work together to think, plan and execute strategies to overcome their opponents. At some stages of the games, it was so intense that there were periodic moments of silence in the house!

At our PlanetCRuSH Cyber-wellness Center, our DOTA E-Sports was not the only happening thing going on. Our Console Games room was also opened up for visitors to use and try. Players could be hitting the barracks of their DOTA opponents at one moment, and crossing finishing lines in Mario-Kart Wii at the next. It was a fun-filled time for everyone.

Alas, as with all competitions, only one team can be the winner. Team Slippers emerged as the Champions after an intensive battle with the 1st runner-up, Rise Stand Fight (RSF). We also saw Team Jarrell walk away with our 3rd placing prize.

Congratulations to these teams! At the end of the day, everyone walked back with an important lesson about life – winning and losing is part of it, it is the
process that counts.

'Wrath of the Lich King' Launch

Today, a few of us decided to join the 'WoW' fun at the launch of 'Wrath Of the Lich King'.

Well, we were there around 11am when the main crowd around the entrance were the early-birds who were orderly and eagerly awaiting to collect their expansion packs. The queue snakes all the way round the corner to the adjacent street.

By 11.30am, Carpenter Street was jam packed with avid WoW gamers who came to get their hands on THE box...

The alley next to SAFRA Town Club was jammed packed with people

Hearing from the people there, we gathered that the first in line started queueing since 5pm the day before! Kudos to them... for their enthusiasium and patience...

The sense of achievement and satisfaction for the first group in the queue

Once the clock struck 12 noon, the 'onslaught' begun and the first wave of 50 early birds were allowed access into SAFRA Town Club to collect their pre-ordered sets. Within 30 minutes, they started streaming out with huge boxes, immense glow on their faces and begin splitting the reward among the friends and guild members who were eagerly awaiting outside.

On average for the first wave, each person pre-ordered or collected about 8 sets of W.O.L.K

All cheers as everyone starts sharing the 'rewards' collected after hours of queuing

So... how was the expereince for us?... Well, we were anticipating some WoW factor with pomp and ceremony... but nothing much except some cos-play characters dressed up as the Blood Elf and the Lich King (some say he's a little shorter than expected... I suppose they imagined him to be some over-powering character in-game... =p )

Free Cyber Wellness Workshop #2 - We did it again!!

Workshop #2 held last Saturday was another hit with parents who came despite the rainy weather. This time, we held separate sessions for the 94 English-speaking and Chinese-speaking parents.

The eye-opening and enriching sharing to teach truths and expose lies of the Internet was very well-received. Many went away with a better understanding of the Internet world their children are exposed to and handles on how to use it to teach good family values.

Free Cyber Wellness Workshop – A Hit With Parents!

The first of three cyber wellness workshops, organised by TOUCH Cyber Wellness & Sports (TC&S), held on 25 October, proved to be a hit with parents. It saw the attendance of 78 parents and 16 kids. Many parents saw this as a great opportunity for a fun-filled family outing on a Saturday morning.

After the talk on 'How to play Digital Games with Your Kids' and an engaging Q&A session, the parents were invited to the games room where they could get a hands-on experience on gaming with their kids.

Here are some of the feedback that we gathered:

10-year-old Ryan Tan, who came with his parents and sister, said, “This is my first time playing so many different games. I enjoyed it! I hope to play with my parents next time.”

Mr Gabriel Phee, a parent, said, “I used to think gaming was something very complicated. The best part about the workshop is that I walk away knowing that gaming is not as inaccessible to parents as I thought.”

Ms Carol Ee, mother of two children aged 9 and 10, said, “The session was very good as I learnt a lot of new insights on today’s youths and gaming. For example, I wasn’t expecting games like World of Warcraft to be so engaging! Now I know… I am already looking forward to the next session!”

Launch of Cyber Wellness Handbook for Parents!

Recognising the increasing need to equip parents and their children with the necessary knowledge and tools to achieve and enjoy cyber wellness, TOUCH Community Services has produced a 28-page manual, titled ‘Cyber Wellness Handbook for Parents’. Supported by the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports (MCYS), the Handbook will be distributed through the Ministry of Education (MOE) to reach parents of all students at the Primary Three to Secondary Three level. The Handbook will also be available for sale at all major bookstores and retails at S$6.00.

Addressing a wide range of common topics faced by today’s youths in the Internet age such as online chatting, pornography, cyber bullying, and computer gaming, the Handbook aims to help the average parent understand what their children is preoccupied with, and conquer their fears of the unknown cyberspace.

TOUCH is launching the Handbook with a series of three free workshops to promote cyber wellness and to empower parents to engage their children effectively in cyberspace. The free workshops are targeted at helping parents apply some of the handles found in the Handbook.

The first session of the workshops will kick off on Saturday, 25 October 2008.

Never underestimate our Youths with their plenteous Energy and their Can Do spirits.When Empowered to Serve by Doing, young people often demonstrate their ability to rise above the challenges and make a difference to those around them.And through guided Reflection, youths learn from their serving, connecting the classroom to the real world; thus achieving the delicate reciprocal relationship between serving and learning, resulting in greater personal growth and social participation in our young people.

The Youth Service-Learning Award aims to highlight Service-Learning (S-L) projects that meaningfully integrate youth learning with service to the community. It also seeks to profile and reward innovative S-L projects that successfully engage youth in communities, enhance youth learning through service and empower youths for impact.

The Award is open to all S-L projects implemented from June 2007 to November 2008 by youths aged 30 years and below.

There are namely four categories of entries:

Category 1: Primary schools

Category 2: Secondary schools

Category 3: Institutes of Higher Learning (ITEs, JCs, Centralised Institute, Polytechnics, local Universities and NIE)

Category 4: Youth Organisations, Voluntary Welfare Organisations, Private Schools, Ethnic & Faith-Based Organisations and Self-Help Groups

Was browsing some websites that a friend forwarded to me and found this very interesting article that narrated about the true story of a game addict who found cobwebs literally growing on his chairs. Of course that is a case of negligence and self-righteous thinking that over-gaming actually happens to someone who can't control themselves.

It's interesting to note that many people do say things like that:

"Oh I have full control over my gaming."

"I think I know when to stop.'

"Don't worry, I'm not a kid anymore"

"It's just a game, what harm can it do?"

Yet when we really come down to the game itself, we would say 10 more mintues to our parents, or maybe I don't want to go out today, just feel like staying home to play games and slack.
Typical language exchanges among the gamers these days.

Never say "never". You really don't know what may just happen when you play for that extra 15 minutes more.

This week we are leaning how to STAY HEALTHY BY THINKING HEALTHY. We need to daily challenge our mindset so that we can be balanced and function well in times of stresses, worries, anxieties, conflicts and difficulties.

There are 5 simple steps we can take:

1. REFLECT – Check our feelings and challenge our perceptions.
2. REMIND – Get rid of negative emotions by reminding ourself the futility of it.
3. RELATE – Build good relationships in our life to help us cope in needy times.
4. REFRESH – Engage in rest or de-stressing activities to let out stress and frustrations.
5. RESOLVE – Conflicts don’t kill healthy relationships, unresolved conflicts do.

Let’s practice some Reflection now!
