Color performance is average for this camcorder.  Its DIGIC DV II imaging system has the capability to produce great details in a wide range of images but lacks the vividness and life-like qualities that high definition camcorders offer.  In bright light environments, this camcorder works best in auto mode.  It can produce decent video images with crisp details.

For low light recording, this camcorder rates at a minimum 1.3-lux illumination to work in Night mode.  Images captured in such low light conditions however, may show noise and grain in the details.  The low light recording works best with environments that are a little brighter than 1.3 lux.

One of the camcorder’s top features is its Pre-Record capability.  This feature lets the camcorder continuously record 3-second clips on to the camcorders internal memory.  Once you press the record button, the camcorder starts recording videos and includes the 3-second clip to ensure you capture those important events from start to finish.

Other features for this camcorder includes Video Snapshot, Dual Shot and a built-in light in front to provide light source when recording in low light conditions.  Connectivity options include an A/V terminal and a USB port.

One of its main competitors in its category is the Samsung SC-MX20 camcorder.  This camcorder solely records in SD/SDHC memory cards and records in MPEG-4.AVC format.  The Samsung camcorder has an identical video recording performance to the Canon camcorder.  The Canon camcorder may hold an edge in performance when recording in low light conditions characterized by lower noise level and lesser grain.  The Samsung TV offers three quality settings and an additional Web & Mobile setting that records in 2-Mbps format that is ideal for web and You Tube uploads.

In addition, its Smart Auto mode is perfect to aid beginners in point-and-shoot applications.  The Smart Auto mode utilizes the DIGIC DV III capacity to analyze the subject’s distance, environment, focus and movements and adjust the exposure to produce excellent video results all the time.  It also has Canon’s Face Detection technology that can detect up to 35 faces in a single frame ensuring sharp focus and perfect exposure for all identified subjects.  It has the capability to detect and recognize faces turned sideward or upside down.

The VIXIA HF R100 only records in SD/SDHC cards and doesn’t have an internal flash or hard drive media; therefore, it doesn’t have Canon’s Relay Recording feature.  It also doesn’t offer a Standard Definition (SD) mode.  Some Canon camcorders, like the HF R10, offers a down-conversion capability but uses two media devices – like the flash drive and SD memory simultaneously in the HF R10’s case.  Since the HF R100 only has one memory card slot it doesn’t support this feature.

This camcorder also comes with Canon’s Instant AF focusing system.  This feature allows accurate focusing and provides faster response time compared to traditional focusing devices used by other camcorders.

This camcorder offers three frame rates to choose from, while most entry-level camcorders only offer a fix recording frame rate.  This camcorder offers 60i, 24p Progressive and 30p Progressive frame rates.  Both the 24p Progressive and 30p Progressive options save the recorder videos in 60i frame rate formats.

This camcorder also has a front mounted control dial like all the Canon HF S models.  This dial is a versatile control that will let users navigate and change the recording settings without going into the menu thru the LCD display.  The custom key button will let users navigate thru the menu, while the dial will let you adjust the settings to increase or decrease the value according to your desired preference.  This custom key can provide control for exposure, focusing, assist functions, mic volume level or AGC limits.

One of the main disadvantages of this camcorder is its inability to record in Standard Definition (SD) quality.  The camcorder, however, has a down-version feature that will allow users to convert HD videos to SD quality.  The process would require two media interfaces to run at the same time; in the HF S200’s case, it would be two SD/SDHC memory cards.

The camcorder’s main recording media is the memory card inserted in its memory slot.  This camcorder doesn’t have an internal hard drive or flash drive.  Less components mean less moving parts.  This camcorder is compact, lighter and less expensive than those camcorders with built-in internal drives.  A 32 GB SD/SDHC memory card can accommodate up to three hours of video in MXP mode, four hours in FXP, 5.5 hours in XP+, 9.5 in SP and about 12.5 hours in LP mode.

This camcorder has three frame rates.  Selections include 60i, 24p progressive and 30p progressive.  Both the 24p progressive and 30p progressive convert to 60i frame rates before saving to the media or SD/SDHC card.

At the left side of the device is the improved LCD screen.  The screen has a touch screen capability.  The 2.7-inch LCD panel has a resolution of 0.211 megapixels.  This widescreen color LCD panel provides easy access and navigation thru the camcorder’s menu system.  Near the bottom left of the panel is the Powered IS button that will increase the camcorder’s level of stabilization compensation on top of its Dynamic Super Range Optical Image Stabilization system.  This button also doubles as a web upload button when in playback mode.  This camcorder doesn’t have a viewfinder; therefore, you must monitor all playback thru the LCD.

This camcorder features an original Canon lens with a 15x optical, an 18x advanced zoom and 300x digital zoom.  The lens has a focal length of 4.1 to 61.5 mm.  Aperture range is from F/1.8 to F/3.2.  Zoom speed can be controlled variably or three fixed zoom speeds.  Maximum shutter speed in video mode is 1/2000 sec, and in still photo mode, it is 1/500 sec.  The camcorder’s filter size is 37mm.

The camcorder’s main recording media device is its 32 GB internal flash drive.  The flash drive can accommodate up to 12.25 hrs of recording in LP format, 9.5 hrs in SP format, six hrs in XP+, four hrs in FXP format and two hours in MXP format.  For additional memory capacity, the camcorder has a built-in memory card slot that can accommodate SD/SDHC memory cards to double the recording capacity of the device.  For MXP and FXP modes in 1920 x 1080 resolution, you will need a Class 4 or higher SDHC memory card.  This camcorder is also equipped with Canon’s Relay Recording feature that automatically transfer the recording to another card once the primary card or the flash drive gets full.

This camcorder offers three frame rates to choose from when recording videos.  There is a 60i, 24p progressive and 30p progressive frame rates selection.  Both the 24p progressive and 30p progressive record in 60i.  If you are an avid videographer who would benefit from a native 24p recording frame rate, you may want to check on the other new Canon camcorders like the Canon VIXIA HF S21.

Color performance for this camcorder is average.  This camcorder produces uneven color recording and below average color accuracy compared to other camcorders in its category.  There is also a high level of noise when recording in bright light environments.  Its strong performance is in its ability to record great images in low light environments.  This camcorder provides crisp images with lesser noise and color inaccuracy when recording in low light conditions compared to other camcorders in its category.  There are also controls to adjust the camcorder’s saturation, brightness, sharpness and contrast levels.  For image stabilization, this camcorder runs on Canon’s Dynamic and Standard Super Range Optical Powered Image Stabilization system.

This camcorder is equipped with a 2.7-inch touch screen LCD panel that sits at the left of the camcorder’s body.  The widescreen color LCD has a resolution of 0.211 megapixels.  This camcorder doesn’t have a viewfinder.

Audio recording is thru the built-in mic that records in Dolby Digital two-channel sound.  The camcorder’s accessory shoe at the top of its body can cater to the Canon SM-V1 5.1 Channel Surround Microphone accessory to provide a surround sound recording capability.  There is also a 3.5 mm stereo mic mini jack to provide versatility in the user’s recording needs.

The camcorder’s dimensions are 2.7 x 2.4 x 4.8 inches (W x H x D) and it weighs 11.3 oz excluding battery.  The package ships with Canon’s BP-808 rechargeable battery pack.  The battery pack however, doesn’t provide great recording capability as it will only last for two hrs of extensive use in a full charge.  To maximize the camcorder’s memory capacity and recording capability, you need to have an extra battery pack to provide continuous recording performance.

One of the camcorder’s main advantages is its auto mode.  This camcorder has one of the best auto modes in its category.  The Smart Auto mode of this Canon camcorder maximizes the power of Canon’s DIGIC DV III Image processor.  The camcorder can effectively detect and analyze the subject, environment, distance, lighting and movement and adjusts the settings accordingly to provide the best recording result.

One of its main competitors in its category is the JVC GZ-HD620 camcorder.  The JVC camcorder features a slightly larger imager with its 1/4.1-inch CMOS sensor.  This HD camcorder also has a larger recording media device with its massive 120 GB internal hard drive.  It has a superior zoom capability with its 30x optical zoom feature.  The JVC camcorder is also one of the best performing camcorders when shooting in low light conditions.  The Canon’s average performance in bright light environment recording is far from the video quality the JVC camcorder can offer.  The Canon camcorder however, features an LCD screen with a higher resolution at 0.211 megapixels compared to JVC’s 0.123 megapixels.  The higher LCD resolution will provide more accurate live view recording images.  The Canon also offers three frame rates to choose from while the JVC camcorder only offers a 60i fixed frame rate recording.

This High Definition (HD) camcorder features an excellent sharpness performance and a native 24p mode for video versatility.  You can customize color settings.  It also features manual controls for the audio levels.  It has a good set of manual controls and options to cater to intermediate prosumers and its 64 GB internal flash drive and 2 SD/SDHC memory slots assures continuous recording time.

The camcorder’s 64GB internal flash drive can record 6 hrs of video in the highest quality and about 25 hrs at the lowest.  The additional two SD/SDHC cards will enable users to pack the camcorder with sufficient memory for a whole day activity.

This camcorder runs on a 1/2.6-inch CMOS sensor identical to that of the HF S11.  The sensor has a resolution of 8.59 megapixels.  Effective resolution in video mode is 6.01 megapixels and in still photo mode is 8.02 megapixels.  The camcorder uses AVCHD compression with five quality settings in recording HD videos.  Quality settings include MXP (1920 x 1080, 24 Mbps), FXP (1920 x 1080, 17 Mbps), XP+ (1440 x 1080, 12 Mbps), SP (1440 x 1080, 7 Mbps) and LP (1440 x 1080, 5 Mbps).

Color accuracy for this camcorder is average.  It can produce vivid and crisp images but there may be accuracy problems with the blue and red tones.  There are several color modes available.  There is Auto, Vivid, Neutral, Low Sharpening and Soft Skin Detail mode.  You can customize each mode in terms of their level in color depth, brightness, contrast and sharpness.  The customization, however, is limited to only minus one, zero and plus one settings.  The Canon can capture excellent images in bright light environments; the Vivid mode shows the least error among the tones.  There is, however, noise evident in videos taken in dark or low light environments.

One of its best features is in the camcorder’s frame rate settings.  Frame rate selections for this camcorder includes 60i, PF30, PF24 and a native 24p.  The Canon HF S21 is the first non-tape camcorder to include a native 24p recording frame rate.  This is an excellent feature for video enthusiasts as it provides versatility when you need to edit video.  The camcorder’s excellent video capture provides a smooth recording with no motion problems and no trailing.  The camcorder’s sharpness is also better than most camcorders in its category and better than its predecessor the Canon HF S11 is.

The lens with a 10 x optical zoom capability mostly occupies the front of the camcorder.  The lens also features an automatic lens cover for convenience.  Its filter diameter is 58mm with a focal range of 6.4 to 64mm.  Aperture range is from f/1.8 to f/3.  Below the lens, you have the auto focus sensor.  At the lower right of the lens is a control dial that has a custom button at the center to select manual controls for the adjustments.  The dial provides precise adjustments for the camcorder’s settings.  Holding down the button and rotating the dial will navigate you thru the controls, which means less hassle than going thru the camcorder’s lengthy menu system thru the LCD.

The right side of the camcorder has the built-in speakers at the front part.  The speakers are in Dolby Digital two-channel audio output.  At the rear top, you will have access to the slide switch for the Auto/Manual mode selection.  The adjustable hand strap also sits at the right side of the camcorder.  Canon’s wrist strap design is one of the best among the camcorders in the market.

The back of the camcorder houses the electronic viewfinder and the camcorder’s battery.  The electronic viewfinder has a resolution of 0.123 megapixels, can extend out and has a diopter adjustment at the bottom – the slider at the bottom of the viewfinder.  At the left of the viewfinder, underneath the cover that has a DC IN label is the DC in port.  At the right of the viewfinder is the start/stop record button.  Below the viewfinder is the battery compartment.  The open compartment design gives versatility for battery upgrades.  The camcorder comes with a Canon BP-808 battery pack.

The left side of the camcorder houses the new 3.5-inch touch screen LCD panel.  The bigger touch screen size gives it ease in navigation thru the menu and selection of settings.  Inside the LCD compartment, you will have access to the Video Snap, Display/Battery Info and Playback mode buttons.  At the bottom part of the LCD compartment there is a latch that houses the camcorder’s Component out, AV out and LANC terminals.  You will also have access to the two SD/SDHC card slots inside the LCD compartment.  The SD/SDHC card slot also supports SDXC cards.

The top of the device looks simple and organized.  At the front part, below the HD CMOS logo is the built-in flash – pop up design.  The flash also serves as a video light for night video recording.  At the middle part is a sliding panel that houses the proprietary accessory shoe.  At the rear, you have the Photo Shutter and the Power button as well as the zoom toggle.

The camcorder package comes with an AC adapter connection, a wireless remote control, USB cable, component cable, Composite cables, a software CD and the user’s manual.  This camcorder also features a Dual Shot mode that works like the auto mode of most camcorders.  In this mode, there is limited access to the manual settings and the camcorder automatically picks the best settings for the subject and the shooting environment.

One of its main competitors in its category is the Panasonic HDC-TM300.  The Panasonic camcorder performs better in low light conditions and costs about $150 less than the Canon camcorder.  The Canon camcorder however, dominates most of the categories with more frame rates to choose from, bigger internal flash drive (Panasonic only has a 32 GB internal flash drive), a bigger LCD screen (Panasonic has a 2.7-inch LCD screen) and a better stabilization system with its Optical stabilization with Dynamic and Powered IS setting.

Another camcorder in this category is the Sony HDR-CX500V.  Video quality performance is similar between the two camcorders.  The Sony camcorder may hold a slight edge with less noticeable noise in videos taken in lowlight conditions.  The Canon camcorder however, renders sharper images and stronger motion performance.  The Canon camcorder is a better choice between the two camcorders with its larger internal flash drive, more frame rate options and a larger LCD screen size.  The Sony camcorder only has a 32 GB internal flash drive, 60i frame rate and a 3.0-inch LCD screen.

The Canon VIXIA HF S21 is an impressive camcorder with features and performance to meet most prosumer needs.  Its manual options and versatility in video recording will suit most intermediate videographer’s needs.  Its auto mode provides excellent video quality and its large internal flash drive with two SD/SDHC card slots will provide continuous video recording that will surely provide convenience for the avid videographer.

The difference between the recording times is rather great, HF11 — 2 hours, 55 minutes; the HG21 — 11 hours, 5 minutes.  You can supplement both these camcorders with SDHC cards.  One of its added advantages is that it has an eye-level viewfinder.  When you compare the two with respect to size, the HF11 is definitely smaller and lighter at 2.9 inches X 2.5 inches X 5.1 inches and 15.1 ounces.  HG21 is 3.1-inches X 3 inches X 5.4 inches and it weighs 17.6 ounces.

There have been few alterations in the design of HG21.  One of the most noticeable ones is the dial that is used to switch from video/still record to video/still playback is placed on the back of the device.  In case of the HF11, it is on the left side.  It has controls that are easy to operate and large.

It sports a 2.7-inch LCD screen.  The frequently used settings sit on a five-way joystick and Function button; the two rest on the LCD bezel.  This placement may not be very comfortable, as it is difficult to concurrently change the settings and hold the camcorder in a steady position.  Few of the functions assigned to the joystick are difficult to use, E.g. manually focusing with the joystick despite of the zoom-view focus assist.

It records AVCHD video at a max bit rate of 24Mbps.  It holds up to 45 hours and 15 minutes of video at the lowest bit rate of 5Mbps.  It has five quality settings.  The higher bit rate supports full 1920×1080 capture.  Best quality video can record to SDHC cards provided it is a Class 4 or better SDHC card.  A Class 6 card would provide the best result.

The SD card slot provided by Canon is quite useful.  However, you have to connect the power adapter to the camcorder to transfer video from the HG21 to your PC.  This may pose a challenge in case you are shooting outdoors and do not have a power outlet nearby.  Nevertheless, you can shoot to an SD card and then transferring the video using an SD card reader.

It sports an f1.8-3.0, 12x optically stabilized zoom lens; it has a longer reach than a 10x lens, which is available in almost all the camcorders of this class.  Its other features include aperture and shutter priority exposure modes, three fixed/one variable zoom speed options, a video light, Instant AF and a windscreen filter.  For recording options, you may want to record either in progressive 30 or 24 fps, or in 60i.  The options available for still photos include metering, exposure and burst bracketing, and flash.  One of the other things included in the package is a complete set of ports and connectors; these include component or mini-HDMI out for direct-to-TV playback, mini headphone and mic jacks, and USB for downloading to computer.

Although good, the 1920×1080 still photos taken from the HG21, you would not want to take a print from them.

If you want, your video to have a movie theatre like look you may want to use the 24p Cinema mode.  This is also good for most of your recordings.  Although it is a good thing, that Canon also included the 30p support.

The lens performs very well.  It features a Super Range optical image stabilizer that is quite pleasing.  The lens focuses quickly and performs well in both, low and bright light conditions.  The images look sharp and have vivid and life-like colors.  Images that have high contrasts have a kind of halo effect.  The stereo microphone sits beneath the lens; it delivers decent quality audio.  In all the recent camcorders, Canon has changed the wind-filter option from a forced-on to automatic, which doesn’t seem to be very effective.

It has a 1/3.2-inch, 3.3-megapixel CMOS sensor, but even this small sensor performs well.  The footage recorded exposes properly, has good saturation and is sharp, too.  The low light videos are detailed and are as good as the others in its class.  The video shows a good deal of noise and a compressed tonal range in low light conditions.

It is difficult to distinguish the 24Mbps video from the 17Mbps, except in low light.  When you view this on a large-screen plasma television, the higher bit rate video showed considerably higher luminance noise than the video with a lower bit rate.  The video with lower bit rates looks soft.  The 24Mbps is the highest bandwidth available for an AVCHD camcorder, which not all the camcorders on the market support.

HG21’s user interface is a little technical but easy to use once you get a hang of it.  It has three menu systems, which all show on the LCD screen.  The navigation works with a small joystick, which requires a practice to master it since it is sensitive; it’s smooth to operate once you get a hang of it.  The manual controls that boot by pressing the joystick are difficult to understand at first.  You have to pay very close attention to the tiny arrows on the screen to make sure where exactly you are in the interface. Canon Vixia’s HV20, HV30 and HV40 all had an analogue wheel to navigate through the menu.  The set of manual controls was compromised on in the HG21 as compared to the previous models.  The near to flawless interface suffers due to the lack of ability to fine-tune the most important controls because you use a joystick rather than a wheel.

It definitely is a brilliant choice for hard disk based high definition recording.  When compared to Sony’s HDR-SR11, the HG21 seems to be a better choice, especially because Sony features a touch-screen interface.  Although a few mistakes, it is one of the better consumer high definition camcorders available on the market.  It has all the features that you may want out of a hard-drive camcorder.  Some of its positives are its high image quality, features and usability.  What Canon could have worked on- the manual features.  Over and above, it’s a good device to have in your possession.

Like the other Samsung camcorders, the HMX-H105 is an easy-to-use device.  It has a responsive touch screen and an intuitive menu structure.  Any person new to Samsung products will have no problem in finding the options and try out the manual controls.  The biggest plus point is that if you do not want to inconvenient yourself with manual controls, you may opt for the EasyQ mode and let the automatic adjustments do the task for you.  The H105 has an elegant and simple user interface.

The camcorder fits comfortably in your hand.  The buttons are well laid out and labeled clearly.  It has a swivel grip that adds to the comfort and ease of use.  You can hold the camcorder in either a pistol grip or a flashlight grip.  This makes it easy to shoot from difficult angles.  The device offers better stability, especially due to the zoom toggle and record buttons sitting on the LCD panel, which facilitate easy two-handed recording.  It is a portable device measuring at 59mm x 60.9mm x 128.6mm and weighing just 380g.  When compared to the R10 it may not seem very robust but still is resistant to dust, scratches, and breakage.  Its touch screen is a fingerprint magnet, but that is true for any touch screen model.  Since it has 32GB of memory, you may not want to carry extra media or be bothered about transferring the footage.  The battery sits in a cavity on the bottom of the camcorder, not giving you the option of upgrading to a larger size.  Battery life on SSD camcorder tends to be much longer than on hard drive, tape, or DVD camcorders.  It sports a standard 2.7-inch LCD that flips out at 90 degrees from the body and rotates up to 270 degrees.

The HMX-H105 has an auto mode, but no other special features come with it.  You may want to shoot with or without manual image adjustments.  It offers a few low light modes like Super C. Nite mode, off, normal, and super.  It also has a Night option in iScene.  Like others, the H105 also comes with an array of scene modes, called iScene; these include Auto, Night, Sports, Portrait, Spotlight, Beach and Snow, and Candlelight.  The zoom toggle on the copy is an exact copy of last year’s SC-HMX20.  A rather flimsy toggle does not allow for variable zoom speeds.  There is a secondary zoom option located on the LCD panel that you may use with the thumb of your left hand.

There are three focus methods – the automatic focus, which is usually sufficient, you may do a manual focus by using the touch screen scale, or use Samsung’s TouchPoint system.  This feature lets you touch the object that you want to focus on and the camcorder will automatically set focus on that object.  The best is the manual focus where you can use a joystick or lens ring to achieve the perfect focus.  The touch screen focus is not too good as it fills the screen with icons that block the image you want to focus.

Samsung camcorders are not the best choice for audio flexibility, and the H105 is no exception to this.  It has a stereo microphone situated on the bottom of the camcorder.  It does not have any headphone or microphone jacks.  The only other thing that the H105 has to offer is the Wind Cut feature.

Even if the H105 does not have a whole lot of connections, it definitely has the ports that most users may want to use.  A single connection takes care of both the Composite and Component video.  USB, HDMI, and DC power all sit in the same compartments.  It has a traditional system of thumbnail views that you select via the touch screen.  Play/pause, forward, rewind, etc. have touch screen controls, too.  For still photos, there is a separate playback screen.

When compared to HMX-R10, the H105 does not offer a large array of manual features and resolution options.  It offers separate modes for video and still modes, which you control by a button on the back of the camcorder.

The options of manual image adjustments available for videographers exist for still photography.  It has options like a 10-second self-timer and continuous shot, which are quite few as compared to once available on the R10.

Samsung offers an exclusive capability to do time lapse recording.  If you connect your camcorder to a power outlet, you could capture footage of over a few hours.  The camcorder offers Optical as well as digital image stabilization; the OIS is better than digital stabilization.  There are a good number of digital effects accommodated, they include black and white, sepia, negative, and art.  They will really help you give a nice touch to your videos.  You may also apply Faders to your video clips.  The ones available are black or white fade-ins and fade-outs.

The stand out point of the HMX-H105 is the SSD.  Finally, a Samsung camcorder that includes optical image stabilization and this addition may prove to work in their favor.  However, you cannot rely on this camcorder for still photography.  It also fails in the department of manual controls and audio features.  On the positive side, it is a sleek and easy-to-use device.  Going by the standards set by the previous camcorders, it is sure to deliver an excellent video quality.

It shows good color accuracy in bright light.  The accuracy is good enough to compare to JVC’s regular consumer camcorders like GZ-HD300 or the GZ-X900.  The saturation levels are good and the colors are strong and vibrant.  The camcorder has no options for color mode, so you cannot adjust the saturation and colors.  The noise levels appear to be on the higher side. Although, not all that bad either.

The GC-FM1 has limited manual controls, which include zoom, video/photo size options and a normal/macro focus switch.  What it does not have is scene modes or low light modes.  Its auto controls perform well, especially the auto white balance.  Most of the “very good” camcorders have trouble adjusting under a variety of lights, but not the Picsio.  It also does a good job with auto exposure by rendering smooth and even adjustments between various levels of light.  It lacks an optical zoom and has 4x digital zoom.  You control the digital zoom by the up and down arrow keys on the d-pad of the device, and therefore there is no variable speed control for the zoom.  These buttons do not function very smoothly, especially when compared to the ones found on the Flip UltraHD.

It has a fixed focus, which means that there is no autofocus mechanism on the camcorder.  There is a slider on the left side of the camcorder that can switch between normal and macro focus settings.  Missing are also low light modes and automatic slow shutter speeds.  However, since it performs well in low light conditions it may not need any low light modes.

Although, small it still is very comfortable to hold the camcorder in the hands.  It is an easy-to-use machine unless you want to change the video recording mode or access the setup menu.  Most of its functions, like recording, entering playback mode, are all very simple.  It has a digital image stabilization system, which ultra compact camcorders do not normally have, but I’m not sure of how effective it really is.  The internal battery has average life.  The other gripe with the GC-FM1 is that it charges only via an USB.

It has built-in software that is easy to use.  The camcorder connects easily to the computer via USB.  Since there are a limited set of buttons the camcorder can be very easy to use.  When compared to other consumer camcorders it has fewer buttons and therefore a simple menu.  The Picsio is not too big and neither is it too big.  It feels more like taking pictures with a cell phone, because you have to hold it vertically in your hand.  Its record button sits in the middle of a four-way switch, a little lower on the body than it should have been.  This position of the record button makes it difficult to hold the camera still while pressing the record button.

The GC-FM1 is a portable device, predominantly due to its small size.  It also records to SD/SDHC cards making at all the more “carry anywhere.”  However, there is a catch here: as said earlier it is has an average battery life, 75 minutes to be precise, and it charges via a USB cable connected to a computer.  In case you run out of battery, you will have to be close to a computer to charge the toy again.  You may want to buy an adapter that allows you to plug a USB connector into a wall-power outlet.

It features a 2-inch LCD screen, that is the largest that the LCDs on an ultra compact camcorder can get.  It is a stationary screen situated on the back of the camcorder.  It does not feature a viewfinder.

The CG-FM1 records audio via a built-in stereo microphone.  Like all other ultra compact camcorders, its sound quality is not great.  The Flip Ultra and most of the other competitors record mono audio; the Picsio captures stereo audio.  The Piscio audio has a constant buzz and muffled sound.  If you are particular about the sound quality produced by a camcorder, you may want to go in for a higher-end, more expensive camcorder.

Other than capturing still photos with a few different size options, the CG-FM1 does not have any other still feature.  You have to press the shutter button down to capture a picture, but there is no shutter sound when you click a snap, and therefore you find yourself wondering if you have actually captured a photo or not.  Where the Picsio score high on the video color test, it scores low on the still picture color test.  Nevertheless, this is a problem faced by many ultra compact camcorders; their white balance does not function as well in still pictures as it does in the video mode.  In all the stills captured have poor saturation and color and are not very sharp.

Overall, JVC’s CG-FM1 Picsio produces amazing videos, mostly due to its high-resolution sensor and an impressive automatic white balance, but is still not a very satisfying product.  This is because it fails in various other departments.  It has a very flimsy body and its looks, too are not very pleasing.  It has a number of uncovered ports making it a little disagreeable.  Nevertheless, it is an easy-to-use camcorder with very good picture quality.

Although very impressively designed, it lags behind in the area of performance; one of the top most reasons for a person to buy a camcorder.  JVC usually does a good job in the area of color accuracy; for example, the GZ-HD300.  However, the GZ-X900 only has average color accuracy.  Images taken in bright light are dark.  Its results are more like the ones achieved from Sanyo VPC-HD2000 and Panasonic HDC-TM300. On an average, it does well with skin tones and a few bright colors. The colors are strong, deep and vivid.

Most of JVC’s camcorders are easy to use, but the GX900 is an exception.  Since it has an array of features and functions, the camcorder is difficult to use.  It has a number of options, buttons, and settings. It has multiple shooting modes and hybrid video/photo setup, which is confusing.  To add to the problem, its user’s manual does not help!  You will have to learn to use the laser-touch operating system, and this learning is going to be difficult!  However, once you learn how to use this, you will be able to scroll through the menu and make large-scale adjustments in a moment.  The laser-touch on the GZ-X900 has a better design than the other JVC camcorders.  Its construction is flat, more responsive and easier to use.

The GZ-X900 is a little different to handle from the traditional camcorders.  It does not have a hand strap, and you can hold it in any manner you wish.  You may either hold it with your fingers wrapped around its top or with your fingers underneath it and the thumb resting on the top. However, due to the lack of a hand strap it is also prone to drops. It has a wrist strap that attaches to a metal loop on the back of the device. Since it has a thin and rectangular body without any parts jetting out, it fits in the palm of the hand, not needing any strap.

The camcorder does not have any external mic or headphone jack, which puts it behind the other camcorders in its league.  The GZ-X900 has limited audio features; rather it only has the wind cut option for reducing the wind-noise that the microphone may pick up.  JVC placed the built-in mic has in an inept position on the top-back of the LCD panel.  Therefore, whenever you change the position of the LCD, the mic’s position changes, so it doesn’t capture sound well.

One of the biggest let-downs of the GZ-X900 is its low light performance; one may rather say that it has the worst low light sensitivity.  The images taken in the dark or in the not-so-bright situations have a slightly green tinge and the color accuracy is terrible. The noise levels are extremely high, too.  Overall, the camcorder gives a solid bright light performance and does a poor job at low light.

The automatic controls on the GZ X900 are good; it has a mode dial on the back of the camcorder, which has many options.  Through the dial, you may switch between photo and video modes, manual and automatic control, and choose high-speed shooting modes for video, or scene modes for photos. You can set the focus, shutter speed, white balance and exposure manually.

The camcorder has a standard zoom toggle, which sits on the top of the device.  The toggle feels comfortable, whichever way you hold the camcorder.  It has 5x optical zoom, which isn’t much as compared to the zoom offered by others in the league.  It has an alternate zoom control on the LCD panel; you adjust this zoom using the laser-touch system.  However, this zoom system does not work very well and is a little cumbersome to use. For an example, the zoom buttons do not appear unless you press the upper portion of the laser-touch.  You may adjust the variable speed control by applying more or less pressure to the toggle. There is no numerical display to show you where you are on the zoom range. However, there is a bar display to show you that.

One of the best attributes of the GZ-X900 is its motion smoothness. One may rather say that it is the smoothest that a camcorder shooting 1080/60i, delivers. Its fun tools include high speed shooting modes for shooting low quality, slow motion videos.  Its bright-light results are excellent; it delivers crisp, detailed and clear results in bright light conditions. One of the highlights of the GZ-X900 is the awesome, sharp picture quality.

It uses the AVCHD codes to capture video at a maximum bit rate of 24Mbps.  The device records to an external SD/SDHC memory card; there is no internal memory on the camcorder, but it does not ship with the memory card.  The position of the memory card slot is a little unusual but it offers good protection and it will not interfere with camcorder operation; it is located on the back of the camcorder, behind a big door that slides out to the right.  This door, although it protects the memory card, it seems to be flimsy and feels like it may break at any moment.

You get Everio Media Browser HD software with the camcorder.  This software is very easy to use but it is not Mac compatible.  So if you are using the GZ-X900 with a Mac, make sure that you have iMovies or other editing software available to import your clips.

Overall, JVC’s GZ-X900 is a good camcorder. Its positives include its bright light results, its array of manual controls and its unique design to make it possible to hold it in a number of positions.  These positives are some of the most exceptional features that a consumer camcorder has ever offered. On the other hand, its low light performance is absolutely awful; and I can’t recommend the camcorder to someone who plans to take footage in low light.  Overall, this is a good camcorder with better than average performance, except in low light.
