The End of Bilerico-Indiana

It's been a good run, but we've decided to shut down our state-level Bilerico sites in favor of expanding and improving the Bilerico Project. We haven't had the time to develop and manage these smaller satellite sites like we should and the traffic and design reflect the neglect.

We'll be re-launching the main site within the next two weeks with an all new design and vibe that will continue our commitment to highlighting the work on LGBT issues done around the country. The content of the state sites will be absorbed into the archives of Bilerico Project.

Thanks for giving us the opportunity to provide local LGBT news and opinion. We look forward to seeing you in the conversations on Bilerico Project. You're not losing a blog, you're gaining a whole family of contributors covering all aspects of the LGBT community!

Man who Killed Professor Don Belton Convicted of Murder

In late December 2009 I posted about an Indiana University professor, Don Belton, who was killed by a Marine, Michael Griffin. The trial was this week and the jury returned a conviction of murder, which carries a 45 to 65 year sentence.

Belton was black, gay, and middle-aged; Griffin is white, straight, and young. As I posted in 2009, Griffin's defense was that he was sexually assaulted on Christmas went to confront Belton and ended up stabbing him 22 times. Griffin's defense was "sudden heat," but not because of the alleged sexual assault (since two days later isn't "sudden") but because Griffin says Belton put his hand on him and that was a sign of aggression. The goal of the defense was to reduce the charge to voluntary manslaughter, not to set Griffin free.

According to a group of people who attended the trial and blogged about it, his attorney closed with "The [Marines] training just kicks in. You just react. That's what happened Dec 27. And that's what Michael is trying to tell you." If anything, that sounds to me like a great argument to lock Griffin up - if he really is a ticking time bomb just waiting to go off and stab people then he shouldn't be free.

Tipper Gore & the Accidental Activist

On Sunday night Jerame and I attended a GetEqual fundraiser with Jillian Weiss. During the speeches it was announced that Tipper Gore was in attendance. Mrs. Gore smiled and waved brightly to the assembled guests and according to the Washington Blade donated $100.

After the event, Jerame and I went out to dinner at a nearby restaurant with a couple of colleagues. A mutual friend stopped by our table to chat briefly and we noticed that he was dining with Mrs. Gore. As we were leaving, we stopped by their table to say our goodbyes.

Our friend introduced us to his companions and, to my delight, Mrs. Gore asked me if we'd met before. Seizing the opportunity (and fortified by a couple of glasses of wine), I proceeded to tell her exactly how we'd met, how mortified I'd been, and how it gave me my start in activism.

Stop Disagreeing With Us or Else!

You won't believe this e-mail that Indiana Senate Majority Leader Connie Lawson (R) sent to a leader of the Indiana Libertarian Party from her official senate e-mail account about a proposed marriage discrimination amendment. The Libertarians have loudly opposed the amendment and Lawson would like them to quiet down - or else!

Roughly translated, the e-mail says, "Hey, Libertarians! Long time no talk! Please shut the fuck up about the marriage amendment, m'kay? I'd hate to have to kick your ass, cuz no one wants to see all that."

I have come to realize that you have helped drive the Libertarian Party of Indiana's most recent views against HJR-6 and SJR-13. While you do understand that I appreciate and respect your views on this issue, I do request that you keep these posts to a minimum. The Republican Party of Indiana does not wish to cause issue with the Libertarian Party of Indiana in any way, but should these oppositions continue to occur, we may have to make some structural adjustments.

What structural adjustments? Why, ballot access, of course. Connie Lawson doesn't mess around; she'll either screw gays and lesbians or she'll screw you if you get in her way. That's just one paragraph of a longer patronizingly threatening letter. The sheer stupidity and pomposity of Lawson's e-mail will shock you. The entire thing is after the jump.

UPDATE: It appears this is a hoax e-mail. The Libertarian Party put out a new press release late last night after I'd gone to bed (and set this post to autopublish). It's after the jump too.

Indiana Senate Committee Passes Marriage Discrimination Amendment

An Indiana state senate committee passed a marriage discrimination amendment this morning, moving the proposal one step forward to passage. The legislation now goes to the full senate for passage.

The measure passed on a 7-3 vote. After every Fortune 500 company based in Indiana opposed the proposed amendment, prominent Republican and Democrat politicians expressed reservations, the majority of newspapers in the state expressed disdain for it, and public polling showed that most Hoosiers oppose the amendment, Republican legislators still decided to push the measure through.

Similar to Republican actions nationwide, Indiana Republicans won election by claiming they would focus on fiscal and economic issues. Instead, they have focused almost exclusively on social issues like union busting, abortion, and marriage equality. A poll released yesterday showed that the majority of Hoosiers have other priorities than same-sex marriage.

Several years ago, then (and current) Speaker of the House Brian Bosma (R) called a marriage amendment "the most important part of the people's business." Apparently, these hidebound politicians still believe it.

Woman Prosecuted After Failed Suicide Attempt

An Indianapolis woman is being prosecuted for murder after an attempted suicide caused a miscarriage:

David Rimstidt, chief deputy to Marion County Prosecutor Terry Curry, said the case was unique but the charges were appropriate given the facts.

Shuai admitted to ingesting rat poison during the late stages of her pregnancy in December. Friends took her to a hospital to get help.

Shuai gave birth to a daughter, Angel, who was put on life support but eventually was removed because doctors determined they couldn't help her. Angel died Jan. 3.

Shuai was arrested Monday and is being held without bond.

There's so much wrong with this, but this is the logical result of a regime that sees the life of a fetus as more valuable than that of a woman and suicide as a choice people make because they're either stupid or selfish.

Lobbying Against Indiana's Marriage Discrimination Amendment: Newbie Report

A couple of weeks ago I attended a lobbying workshop presented by Indiana Equality Action, in which we learned how to address our legislators on the upcoming vote to embed marriage discrimination in the Indiana constitution. On Tuesday I drove down to the Statehouse to talk to my legislators, Rep. Brian Bosma (R), Speaker of the House, and Senator Scott Schneider (R).

Once clear of the security scan at the entrance, I couldn't tell which way to go ("upstairs," according to previous instruction). The place was packed with people dressed in black suits, so I stood out somewhat. My puzzled look caught an employee's eye and she guided me to the information desk on the main floor. The woman at the desk gave me very clear instructions on how to reach both legislators.

On the third floor, I walked to the desk on the east side of the building. I asked the gentleman at the desk to speak to Brian Bosma. He handed me a plain notepad and asked me to write my name and whom I represent. Since I don't represent anyone, he said my name would do. He explained that Mr. Bosma might not be available and took my note back.

About five minutes later, a well-dressed woman about my own age appeared. She was Bosma's personal assistant, and she told me that he was not in. I told her why I was there. She seemed sympathetic to my cause and encouraged me to contact Bosma by email. We shook hands and I went to the desk on the west side of the building.

Indianapolis Tea Party Mayor Opposes Marriage Amendment

It looks like just about everyone but the religious right and shameful politicians hoping to score points off the backs of a minority are lining up to oppose Indiana's marriage discrimination amendment. The amendment would not only ban same-sex marriage, it would also ban domestic partner benefits and civil union ceremonies.

At this week's Senate committee hearings, the legislators heard from representatives of every Fortune 500 company based in Indiana; all of the corporations oppose the amendment. The most unexpected opposition though came from Indy's Mayor, Greg Ballard; Ballard was the original "Tea Party" candidate - complete with big tea bags dunked into the White River.

CEOs of many of Indiana's largest employers, including WellPoint, Emmis Communications and Simon Property Group, as well as Cummins and Lilly, have come out against the amendment, as has Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard, saying that he wants to stand with the business community.

The city does not offer domestic partner benefits, but some fear the law would preclude it from ever doing so. Indianapolis Fire Department Capt. Ruth Morrison, who is gay, testified that the lack of such benefits has caused the department to lose two model employees to other states in the past year.

Thanks to the business concerns, Republicans decided to shelve the amendment and didn't vote on the measure. If it doesn't pass the Senate, it will be historic; the amendment - in one version or another - has passed the heavily Republican-controlled state senate every year since it was first introduced.

Equality Is My Dream

Yesterday I showed you the complete "Rally for Equality" on the Indiana Statehouse steps to oppose HJR-6, the state's proposed constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage, civil unions, and domestic partnerships. One of the speakers on stage was teen Dorothy Vanore; she represented the Indiana Youth Group.

Vanore was one of the most engaging and fiery orators - especially for someone who doesn't have a lot of experience with public speaking. She created a video about her moment in the spotlight that will leave you with a grin from ear to ear.

In related news, an Indiana state senate committee is currently debating the marriage discrimination amendment. (You can watch a livestream here.) They are expected to vote soon. I'll update the post with the results, but the measure is expected to easily pass.

UPDATE: The motion was tabled without a vote. They will set a later time to vote. Consider this a small victory. The amendment's not dead - and probably will come up for a vote - but it's a postponement.

Indiana LGBT Folk Rally at Statehouse Against Marriage Amendment

About 500 Hoosier LGBT people rallied against a proposed constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage, civil unions and domestic partner benefits yesterday. While Fox 59 has done an admirable job of leading the way for accurate LGBT reporting, I was disappointed to see "Gay Marriage Rally" in the reporting. While they still had to find someone to speak negatively about LGBT people, I did get a small giggle out of the moronic state senator who thinks that "one man and one woman" has been the standard since Biblical times. Uh, no. That would be one man and several women (plus concubines!). Doh!

Complete video of the entire rally after the jump. A state senate subcommittee is supposed to "debate" the amendment tomorrow, but it will likely pass easily.

Clarification in New York Marriage Rules for Transgender People

One of the most understated barriers to equality for trans people isn't animus - it's ambiguity. Some of our biggest steps of progress come from the clarification of rules regarding gendered institutions like marriage. Take TLDEF's latest victory regarding policies for transgender marriage applicants in New York:

Jane and John are both transgender. They are an opposite-sex couple who have been in a relationship for over a decade. In Dec. 2009, they attempted to marry in the Bronx. They fulfilled all of the requirements for receiving a marriage license in New York City and presented their government-issued photo identification - the only identification required by the City Clerk's office. Rather than issuing the marriage license, the City Clerk refused and instead demanded that Jane and John produce their birth certificates before they could be married - something not required of other marriage license applicants.

Under the terms of the new policy, issued on Feb. 7, 2011, once a marriage license applicant produces the required photo ID, the City Clerk may not request additional proof of sex. Moreover, City Clerk employees are forbidden from considering the applicant's appearance or preconceived notions related to gender expression when deciding whether to issue a marriage license.

This PFLAG Parent Is Angry!

In response to the proposed marriage discrimination amendment (HJR-6) in Indiana, there is going to be a Rally for Equality on Monday, March 14th from 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m. at the Indiana Statehouse in Indianapolis.

I'm helping to work on this event. I am doing this because, as a PFLAG parent, I am very angry and disgusted with our state legislators. They have no compassion and don't care what can potentially happen to our GLBT children.

We know that this bill will be bad for business and education in Indiana. Bright and talented individuals will not want to enter a state that officially says "You're not wanted."

We also know that this bill will threaten families who could lose the rights and protections available to them. But I wonder what these legislators who are voting for the bill would say if confronted by a parent who says, "You're going to ruin my child's life - why is my child any less than yours?"

Indicted: Remember Indiana's Charlie White?

Do you remember back in September when I blogged about Indiana's Republican Secretary of State candidate, Charlie White? White won the election even though I asked, "Did IN Republican Secretary of State Candidate Commit Voter Fraud?"

According to a grand jury finding yesterday, he did. Indiana's top election official has been indicted on seven felony counts including a C felony for fraud against a financial institution, 3 voter fraud charges, 2 written perjury charges and a theft charge for getting paid by the Fishers city council even though he didn't live in the district anymore.

The case is being prosecuted by two special prosecutors - Dan Sigler, a Democrat and former Adams County prosecutor, and John Dowd, a Republican and former Warren County prosecutor.

White, a Republican, took office in January under a cloud of allegations he voted in a precinct in which he did not live. Even though the allegations were known at the time of the election, White handily defeated the Democratic nominee for the post, taking almost 1 million votes in 88 counties.

According to D. J. Sigler, White surrendered to the Hamilton County Sheriff's Department on Thursday.

Just another hypocritical Indiana Republican politician, folks. Nothing to see here - but you can smell the aroma of cooked goose nicely.

Christians Preserve Right to Bully Suicidal Kids

Check out this bit of "pro-family" crowing from the Indiana Family Institute's newsletter listing all of their accomplishments in the Indiana legislature this session:

Anti-Free Speech homosexual "bullying" bill dies in Senate committee. The homosexual lobby was pushing SB 538, a seemingly innocuous "anti-bullying" bill. Homosexual advocates around the country and here in Indiana are attempting to use the tragic suicides of several allegedly homosexual high school students to thrust their agenda on the public schools. This bill would have given homosexual advocates in schools a weapon to silence completely appropriate discussions by students who oppose the homosexual political agenda by opening up the definition of bullying beyond that which the average Hoosier would recognize. The far Left homosexual lobby believes any opposition to homosexuality, even peaceful and appropriate civil discussion, can be a form of bullying. The bill was voted on and defeated in committee and died.

What a horrid piece of legislation! Oh, those radical homosexual activists! Somehow, I'm doubtful that the IFI's description is apt since the legislation was sponsored by a Republican. Oh, wait. That's right. It's not accurate at all.

Indiana's Jud McMillin: A Tale of Glass Houses & Rocks

Indiana Republican state representative Judson (Jud) McMillin is a man with a secret past.

The young freshmen legislator, who represents a southern Indiana district on the Ohio border, grew up in the area and when he's not climbing on his moral high horse to vilify gay and lesbian relationships, he represents businesses at his family law practice - a firm that has more than once helped hide his many brushes with the law.

While it's easy for small town lawyers to sweep secrets under the rug, you can't keep everything hidden forever - especially when the past includes petty theft allegations, vehicular homicide, and resigning from a job after a sex scandal.
