Go green at home on Earth Day

(NC)—Earth Day is a reminder about the importance of respecting our environment and doing all we can to protect our planet. Every year, over six million Canadians take part in Earth Day by doing simple things such as riding their bikes to work or using candles at night. This year show how important the environment is by pledging an act of green.

Here, in your own home, are some ways to take part in the world's most celebrated environmental event. These tips are environmentally friendly and will save you money on your energy bills:

• Cool down your house with a ceiling or electric fan and open up the windows at night. Ceiling fans cost about 1 cent for two hours of use, compared to 67 cents to a dollar for central air. Use your AC only when necessary and be sure to turn it off when you're going to be away from home long periods of time.

• Invest in a programmable thermostat. It will automatically adjust the temperature in your house, saving you energy while you're away or sleeping.

• Use insulation with a high R-value, such as Roxul RockFill, which can be used to increase insulation in your attic. It will keep your house cool in the warm weather and take the stress off your air conditioning unit.

• Check the tightness of your refrigerator seal by closing the door on a piece of paper. If it's held in place, the seal is still good, if not, it's time to replace the seal or fix the door's alignment.

• Only do laundry when you have full loads. If you have smaller loads, make sure to use the correct settings and if you only have a couple of items, wait it out or wash them by hand.

Cultural Tourism and Public Art Wasaga Beach

It is no secret that I believe Wasaga Beach would benefit greatly from more public art, multi-purpose gardens and a cultural tourism strategy. (I still think our 'Marketplace' would have been more successful thus far if it had of been named 'Farmer's Market'....but that's a whole other topic!)

This morning I watched a segment on CBC about the newly unveiled lights on the Bay Bridge in San Francisco. It will bring 50 million visitors to the area in the next 2 years! The lights = 50 million tourists!

Yes, we are much, much (MUCH) smaller than this city. Yes, we don't have the budget or population base they do. BUT! We have what they don't!

The world's longest freshwater beach!

What are some of the simple things we could do - solar lights on the blue bridges, Nancy Island? There are many ideas!

Let's urge our local council to make cultural tourism and priority. Let's create a Wasaga Beach Tourism campaign as good as or better than Newfoundland and Labrador!

Let's BOOST our public spaces and attractions!

Skinny Dipping In Wasaga Beach

Not only do I want (dream) more public art, more trees, yards + yards filled with victory gardens and a centre for the arts in Wasaga Beach, I also long for a skinny dipping pier similar to the one in Denmark! We could do it. Read all about how this project impacted their economy in an extremely positive way.

"Six years ago, the shoreline in Kastrup, Denmark was practically inaccessible, not that anyone wanted to go there: It was nothing but industrial buildings and rocky beaches. The parklike Copenhagen waterfront to the north was the envy of Kastrup residents, so in 2003, the city hired Swedish design firm White Arkitekter to clean up its coast. The result: the Kastrup Sea Bath. What was once considered the wrong side of the harbor is now a bustling hub of activity, a result of the recent extension of the Copenhagen Metro through Kastrup, the replacement of the beach’s rocks and stones with white sand, and the completion of the sea bath in 2005. Teenagers swarm the structure in the summer, jumping off the diving platforms. Even in the winter, when temperatures dip down to the 30s (Fahrenheit), hardy bathers still stop by for a quick dip or, more frequently, to soak up the sun on the built-in benches. From the beach, the bath’s 328-foot pier extends into the Øresund Strait toward Sweden and culminates in the 9,365-square-foot swimming, bathing, and diving structure." - Dwell

Cross Country Skiing Blueberry Trails

I walked into the silence of the forest this past weekend. It was so still, so quiet. The fluffs of white branches and gathered poofs of snowflakes slowly floated to the ground; wisps of wind moved it in dancing swirls in front of me. Magical. You need to do this here soon. PFXO

Wasaga Beach offers some of the most exciting nordic ski terrain in Central Ontario with 30 kilometres of trails. Expert skiers are challenged on the groomed and track set "High Dunes Trail", or you may choose a more leisurely ski on the "Blueberry Trail".

The Wasaga Nordic Centre offers modern equipment rentals, light refreshments, warm-up shelter and outback ski shelters to warm up a lunch on a crisp winters day. A quiet skier will be rewarded with wildlife viewing as white-tailed deer and winter birds are abundant. Call the Trail Centre at (705)429-0943 for trail conditions, rental and ski rates and general winter program information.

We need a 'food truck alley' or a 'food truck festival/weekend' - we NEED to open the doors to more creative economic developments - public art - buskers - EAT Street! - Food Board Walk - whatever you want to call it - how about 'sunset events' every week?

It is proven that food trucks increase traffic and revenue for existing restaurants! So have no fear. In fact, many owners enter into the food truck market which helps them market their existing locations!

Our council must look to other successful communities. We can't stay in the stone age.

'Snow Battle' Yukigassen Wasaga Beach 2013

Yukigassen, Japanese for "Snow Battle", is a truly Canadian sport, perfect for all ages and skill levels. The sport has been around for nearly 25 years in Japan, but it is just hitting Canada and I think it would be a perfect winter event (Snowman Mania?) for Wasaga Beach.

Jasper has signed on to host the Canadian National tournament for the next five years, with the winning team earning a place at the World Championships in Japan.

After 20 years in Japan, this energetic, competitive sport
has finally crossed the ocean and made it to the winter tundra of Canada!

Yukigassen, Japanese for "Snow Battle" is a sport for all ages and skill levels which, could not be more perfectly defined as "truly Canadian in nature".

This dynamic game is played on a snow court 40 meters long by 10 metres wide. Each team of seven battles the opposing team with 90 snowballs per period attempting to eliminate the opposing team with the snowballs or capturing their flag. All snowballs are made to specific standards in the machines provided so the game is fair and safe. Please see RULES for a complete set of rules and regulations in Canada.

It has become the perfect sport for co-workers and businesses to put teams together – embracing the community spirit while raising camaraderie in the workplace. It's ideal for friends, classmates and teammates from other sports to get together to compete and enjoy the winter. It is a sport where the entire community comes together to have fun, compete and experience the outdoor spirit of Canadian winters. Yukigassen Canada Inc. is the governing body for the sport in Canada and will be launching a series of events across Canada. National Championships will be held annually to determine one women’s and one men’s team who will have the opportunity to represent Canada at the World Championships in Japan. This game is very serious business. An official international federation exists with a strong sponsorship backing. A few of the sponsors are the major media outlets NHK, HBC, Yomiuri, Mainichi, Asahi Shimbun Presses, Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, Japan Airlines, and Sapporo Beer(!). There are many Japanese men who dedicate their lives to this sport, training themselves everyday for the big games that only occur for a couple days out of the year. Some even forgo having spouses and raising a family due to all the time required to dedicate themselves to perfecting the throwing strike or volley.

The sport isn’t limited to inside the borders of Japan. Many countries participate in the games, many of which have their own leagues and tournaments: Finland,Norway, Sweden, Canada, and the USA.

The idea came about in 1987 by a small, sub-3,000 population Hokkaido town called Sobetsu. At the time, Sobetsu’s claim to fame was a summer tourist town. Nearby is Mt. Showa-Shinzan, the main attraction for many visitors.

During the long, snow-filled winters, tourism halted to a stand-still. The town’s young, aspiring population saw a need to improve Sobetsu’s economy during the long winters. Forming an ideas committee, they began brainstorming methods of luring in tourists. They already knew that their idea had to be unique and not have been implemented elsewhere in order to fully realize their goal. Days went by with no home-run idea in sight. What began to be an optimistic search to improve their town slowly spiraled into the thought that in reality they might have to settle to just being a summer town. Then the fateful day finally came.

Members of the committee took noticed that tourists were having playful sessions of snowball fighting around town. The flashing light bulb appeared in the minds of the committee, and the rest was history. The first Yukigassen tournament was held the following winter, which brought in 7,000 visitors and 70 teams for the event. Twenty-three Showa-Shinzan Yukigassen tournaments later, the event is now drawing in an annual average of 25,000 visitors, with a set 128 coed and 24 female participating teams.

As mentioned earlier, a game of Yukigassen is played out with two teams of seven on-field players each. Each team can have two additional back-up players and a captain, making it a total of ten players.

In a tournament style setting, three teams are grouped together and pitted against each other round-robin style. Games are played best two out of three, where each game’s length is a maximum of three minutes. Victor is decided when either

The enemies flag is in possession of the opposing team
All players on the opposing team are knocked out (one hit from a snowball is considered out; doesn’t matter where the source of the snowball came from, either the enemy, your teammate, or even yourself), or
The time runs out one team has more remaining players than the other team.

The team with the best record moves on to face the other victors. This continues until one team comes out on top.
