This module is entitled: Looking Back on Bathroom Design
In order to get the full benefit of designing and remodeling your bathroom you need to first understand where it came from and where it’s going:
"Summary: Bathrooms used to be very predictable and ordinary in layout and execution. A prevalent trend in bathroom design is the personalization of the space. Homeowners want a beautiful and exciting planned bathroom that is visually integrated into the design of the rest of their home."
A Brief History of Bathroom Design
So, before we actually begin the bathroom design process let’s briefly take look at how the bathroom has changed over the years and why homeowners are remodeling the room. It should come as no surprise to anyone that technology has been a major influence in the evolution of your bathing area. It started out as a convenient space for performing personal hygienic tasks and has progressed over the years to become a room of rejuvenation and relaxation but for the most part, to be realistic, the bathroom itself is still a room where privacy has always been a requirement.
That of course would all depend upon who is using the facility and is also dictated by lifestyle adaptions. Couples for example would be more willing to openly share the space whereas individual family members might be a bit more modest, so you have to take this into consideration when coming up with a layout that will work for everyone.
I believe that one of the most noticeable changes to the bathroom in the latter part of the century is the fact that lavatories used to be very predictable and ordinary in layout and execution. Nowadays, for the most part, bathrooms have developed into showcases of distinctive design ideas and have gone the route of greater individualistic expression.
We can really see this change if we look back at how the typical home was laid out. There were the characteristic entertaining areas such as the dining room or living room and then there was the bathroom, yeah that room, the room hidden away at the back of the home where people did their unmentionables. It was all hush, hush. You went in closed the door did your duty and nobody talked about it unless it backed up or broke down.
This mentality for the most part was the reason why home decorators primarily concentrated their design efforts on the more public areas such as the living room, parlour and entry to the home. As families began to cocoon their lifestyles, due to economic slowdown or political unrest around the world, other areas of the home such as the kitchen, bedrooms and family room also garnered some stylistic attention as it became chic to turn your home into a personal refuge.
The family home became a dwelling to focus and center your universe; a calm place in the midst of the ever prevalent chaotic steam of life. Family sought stability. Instead of starting the home buying process by purchasing small and selling your home every couple of years, each time buying a bigger home, families were now staying put and instead chose to expand and improve upon their present residence.
Eventually this new train of thought spilled over into the bathroom to overcome the utilitarian mindset and spur on a creative revolution of high styling and chic decorating ideas. The spurned love child now became the cherished prodigy as it came of age showing its true colors. In some bathrooms, the fine line between the bathing area and the rest of the home has all but disappeared with the inception of open concept layouts such as wet rooms.
In other cases the distinction between the bathroom and other rooms is greying, or to be more precise[...]</itunes:summary> <itunes:author>bathroomgurureview.com</itunes:author> <itunes:explicit>no</itunes:explicit> <itunes:block>no</itunes:block>

<feedburner:origEnclosureLink>http://www.bathroomgurureview.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/Looking-back-on-bathroom-design.mp3</feedburner:origEnclosureLink>

Bathroom Design Training

Bathroom Design

bath design modules

Bathroom Design Training

Bathroom Design Tutorials

Design Your Own Bathroom

training for designing a bathroom

Hi everyone this is Anthony Mclean from the Bathroomgurureview.com and I’m really thrilled to bring you some exciting news. As we all know, designing and remodeling a bathroom that is falling apart or is just plain outdated is a very personal journey. Through the years, we have seen how the before and after pictures of a bathroom renovation project has literally changed lives. At Bathroomguru review we have received several emails thanking us for the helpful content we have provided our readers and to be quite honest we are humbled by your gratitude and we thank you for the compliments but unfortunately we also found a reoccurring theme throughout some of the mail we have received.
"Summary: Get bath design training. Learn how to design your own bathroom using bathroom design modules and tutorials that take you through the bath planning and execution process."
As stated before, our community members loved the info on the site but for the most part were unsure where to begin the remodeling process or what to do next. Email after email in some way or form asked us to create a blueprint or some sort of bathroom design cheat sheet they could use. Our readers wanted us to create a step by step tutorial that would lead them through the bathroom redesign process from start to finish. Essentially by following our blueprint we could guide them on their journey to bathroom nirvana.
Now we were a little frustrated by this because we thought we had broken down our site into digestible categories where our community members could logically get the information they needed. But unfortunately as it turned out, we were not as complete as we had hoped. So our team got together and brainstormed for a while as we thought up new ways to bring greater value to our readers and we finally came up with a solution that I hope you will all like.
For the next several weeks or months, because we really don’t know how long this process is going to take we are going to be bringing to you an online course on how to design, remodel and build your bathroom. In this sequence we are going to systematically examine not only the more common problems and needs involved in upgrading your bath but also design recommendations for small bathrooms, special adaptions for the elderly and alternative floor plans to try to make your life a little easier while using the facility and much, much more.
Through audio, pictures and text, in this series you will learn how to repair and replace fixtures, tiling, lighting, storage considerations, choosing colors for your bath etc. etc. the list goes on, anyway I think you get the picture. All in all, we will teach you techniques and methodologies for taking your bathroom from where it is now to wherever you want it to be.
Studies indicate that the average adult spends roughly about 60 minutes a day in their bathroom. In this busy sometimes hectic world that we live in, no one has to tell you the importance of time. With each of these mini bath tutorials we are going to try and keep it short, sweet and to the point, probably between 5-15 minutes per training segment. Essentially our goal will be to educate you on contemporary bathroom design principles so that you can take your mundane bathing area and transform it into an exciting and inviting part of your home. Tutorials on organizing your remodeling project and construction techniques will be designed to help the beginner to intermediate renovation do-it-yourselfer. Now some of these topics have already been covered somewhere on our site. But with this course we are going to lay it out sequentially so you can easily follow along the design process.
Successful bathroom design makes resourceful use of the available space and combines the numerous bath elements into a cohesive and satisfying whole that reflects your own personal flair. Stay tuned and come back often as we provide for you weekly podcasts examining design considerations and remodeling so[...]</itunes:summary> <itunes:author>bathroomgurureview.com</itunes:author> <itunes:explicit>no</itunes:explicit> <itunes:block>no</itunes:block>

<feedburner:origEnclosureLink>http://www.bathroomgurureview.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/bathroom-design-tutorials.mp3</feedburner:origEnclosureLink>

Finding a Drain Blockage in Your Bathroom

Plumbing Design

blocked drain help

drain blockage in your bathroom

drain problems

drain snake

find drain blockage

Finding a Drain Blockage in Your Bathroom

how to clear blocked drains

pinpointing drain stoppages

pinpointing drainage problems

repairing clogged drains

solving drainage problem in your bathroom

unclog bathroom drains

unglogging a bathroom drain

You bathroom plumbing system will occasionally need repairing. Locating a drain stoppage or blockage in your washroom is not too challenging once you understand how the water circulates in your home. Your bathroom toilet drains directly into your home main stack, whereas your bathtub and sink drain foremost into one-and-a-quarter or one-and-a-half inch drain lines. This in turn empties into your main drain. Now that you understand what happens to the water in your bathroom let’s examine where a blockage is likely to occur.
"Summary: Finding and repairing a clogged drain in your bathroom may require you to use a drain snake. If your plumbing system requires more than just regular maintenance a plumber may be required to fix the drainage problem."
A p-trap is designed to hold a little bit of water so that notorious gas fumes from the sewers does not back up into your home. Because of its sideway “p” or “u”-shaped design most drain stoppages occur in the lower section of the trap connected to your fixtures. Since your pipes are joined and for the most part work in conjunction to facilitate the flow of water and waste we can summarise that if your toilet and sink both are draining properly, but your toilet empties slowly, then the tub trap or drain line is more than likely where the blockage is occurring.
On the other hand if when the water flows from your vanity sink, it backs up into your bathtub, then the problem is taking place somewhere between your sink and your toilet. Hence, based upon the previous scenario, another place this blockage could happen is between the sink and your main drain. As you can see pinpointing the drain stoppage is not an exact science but at least you will know where to start looking if the problem occurs.
This type of drain blockage is altogether not an uncommon occurrence and is usually caused if the drain between the sink and your stack angles downwards in the direction of your sink. This nature of obstruction is more common in older homes where the foundation of the house has settled over time or from natural phenomena such as earthquakes.
To resolve this blockage problem you have to first remove the trap under the sink and run a drain snake into the pipe. If you can, try to maneuver the snake in the direction of the main stack. You should be aware however, that if you have a T-fitting under your bathroom floor, you will have a fifty-fifty chance of the snake successfully going down the right path. Meaning you may have to try several times before you can get it to go in the right direction.
If this action seems fruitless and you have a basement, you might be able to go downstairs and see if you can access the stack from down there. Once there, try to insert the drain snake into the piping at a point where you can direct the snake towards the main stack.
On the off chance that your drain is on the second floor of your home, between the floor and ceiling, the only alternative is for you to keep trying from under the sink in your bathroom and attempt to get to the stack.
Sometime the plumbing from your bathtub and bathroom sink could be attached to a larger line that goes from your toilet to your main stack or drain. In a lot of upstairs baths the drum trap for your bathtub will have the top flush with your bath floor so you can access it. Once you have cleaned both your sink and tub plumbing traps and the water is still running out slowly or backed up, you may have to take more drastic action to get at the heart of the drain stoppage problem.
Removing your toilet should be your last resort if you have a drain blockage and should not be taken lightly since the bottom of your toilet trap fits snugly over a wax ring that seals it against the closet flange on the floor. It’s not removing the toilet that is the issue; it’s when you have to put it back on with a new wax ring that precision is important. So if this will be a problem for you then[...]</itunes:summary> <itunes:author>bathroomgurureview.com</itunes:author> <itunes:explicit>no</itunes:explicit> <itunes:block>no</itunes:block>

<feedburner:origEnclosureLink>http://www.bathroomgurureview.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/finding-a-drain-blockage-in-your-bathroom.mp3</feedburner:origEnclosureLink>

Steam Cleaners – A Green and Effective Way to Clean Your Bathroom

Bathroom Trend

clean your bathroom

clean your shower

cleaning your bathroom

environmentally friendly ways to clean your bathroom

green cleaning for your bathroom

shower accessories

steam clean your bath

Steam Cleaners

The bathroom can often prove to be the trickiest room of the house to clean, and increasingly more people have good reasons for turning to a steam cleaner to keep a clean and healthy environment where it most matters. Ok, I know I am going to ruffle a couple of do-it-youselfer feathers and bruise some weekend renovators ego’s with this article because to be quite honest tiling your bathroom can be done by just about anyone with a little practice. Just start off small, like a countertop or backsplash and if that turned out ok then maybe you have what it takes to tackle your walls or bathroom floors. But just because you watched a couple episodes of Home and Garden TV does not make you an expert on the subject. Experience about industry best practices, materials to use, best prices and discounts for large purchases, not to mention a warranty, can only be obtained by a seasoned tile contractor.
"Summary: Finding a qualified tiling contractor is time consuming. Networx will help you find a local contractor that has the best combination of price and satisfied customers."
Unsightly crooked grout lines or having to tear down your tile to find where the water is seeping through your shower walls is neither an easy nor inexpensive proposition, not to mention how this will affect your home insurance. Enough said about that. You are a sensible person and have decided you want your bathroom tiled or retiled by an expert. You don’t have the skill set and you want quality tiling work done because you realize that tiling your bathroom can be a sizable investment and you don’t want to screw it up.
But where do you go and who do you turn to. Who will help you take the uncertainty out of finding and hiring an expert who installs tile? Do you go to your local home depot or do you go to one of the mom and pop tile stores looking for a professional installer? At first the answer may seem obvious.
Home depot, Lowes or Rona have great inspiring commercials on tv. They may seem like the logical choice because they are after-all all about home renovations and offer superior products and helpful advice for all your home improvement needs. But if you are looking to get quality work done by someone who has been installing nothing but tile for the last 25 years, then you may have to do a little bit more digging. If you are lucky, they may be able to point you in the right direction if the customer service rep is a retired contractor and knows people in the industry.
It pays to look beyond the lowest bid when selecting a contractor. They will however try to promote one of their own internal contractors but unless that individual has been tiling for over 3-4 years (always get references) you don’t know what you’re getting. Tiling expertise takes time in order to learn the trade inside and out. Kindly thank them for the offer and keep searching.
Tile stores are a great place to get referrals about qualified tiling contractors in your area but be sure the clerk behind the counter is a seasoned employee not some student whose only purpose of being there is to make enough money to buy some drinks on the weekend and party with their friends. If the tiling store only caters to contractors they more than likely have their finger on the pulse of the industry and can give you some qualified leads if you need a competent tiling contractor.
Another great resource for hiring a professional tiling installer is the Better Business Bureau. Not only will they find accredited ceramic tile companies, which have all agreed to a set of high standards in their business practices, they also warn you of home improvement scams and give you tips to avoid potentially getting ripped off from fly by night contractors.
A good way to find a potential tile contractor is to ask someone you know and trust such as friends, co-workers and relatives for recommendations of qualified tile installers. If you can get several installers to come to your residence to evaluate the square footage of your tiling project and give estimates that would be[...]</itunes:summary> <itunes:author>bathroomgurureview.com</itunes:author> <itunes:explicit>no</itunes:explicit> <itunes:block>no</itunes:block>

<feedburner:origEnclosureLink>http://www.bathroomgurureview.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/finding-a-qualified-tile-contractor.mp3</feedburner:origEnclosureLink>

The Benefits of Ceramic Tile in Your Bath

Ceramic Tile

adding tile to your bathroom

benefits of ceramic tile in your bath

ceramic floor tile

ceramic tile benefits

ceramic tile in your bathroom

ceramic tile review

choose ceramic tile for your bathroom

durable

environmentally friendly

maintaining ceramic tile

the advantages of ceramic tile

the benefits of ceramic tile

tile

what are the benefits of ceramic tile

why ceramic tiles are a great choice

No one can argue that ceramic tile is one of the best quality flooring choices available for homeowners. Beautiful, versatile and dynamic, ceramic tile is a popular choice for bathroom walls, backsplashes, shower enclosures and decorative murals. The benefits of ceramic tile in your bath are many, from being durable and resilient to being environmentally friendly and reducing household allergens. Installing ceramic tile in your bathing area will also increase the value of your home and is essentially one of the best flooring choices because it is low maintenance and easy to clean. With a myriad of design options from tile manufacturers, it is both practical and functional for your bathroom. Ceramic tile never ceases to amaze me just how many different sizes, shapes and textures, are available for designing the perfect bathroom backsplash, floor or wall.
"Summary: Ceramic tile is a practical choice for surfacing bathroom walls, floors, backsplashes and shower enclosures. The benefit of ceramic tile in your bath is durability and increased value of your home. Another advantage of ceramic tile is low maintenance and easy to clean."
The Many Advantages of Ceramic Tile
Slip Resistant – Safety in the bathroom is very important to all family members involved. Before you buy any ceramic floor tiles it’s always a good idea to make sure they are treated to prevent slipping by adding some type of industrial grit to the glaze. Another way you can prevent slipping on your bathroom floor tiles is to add texture to the surface in the form of ribs or an lemon peel type finish.
Resists Moisture – Ceramic tiles are an excellent choice for use in your bathroom’s wet zones, whether in the shower or in the changing area. When properly installed and grouted, you won’t have to worry about moisture seeping through your ceramic tiles since some have a less than 0.5% moisture absorption rate. Washing your floors and walls will not damage your tiles. Use as much water as you like; just don’t let the water pool on the floor for an extended period of time since the water may run into the base board causing wood rot.
Durable and Abrasion Resistant – Ceramic tiles come in different durability classes. Class 3 and 4 ceramic tiles are made for moderate to heavy foot traffic areas. These tiles are scratch resistant and have a relatively longer life compared to most of the other bathroom materials used for floors or wall surfacing. This added benefit ensures that if you have a busy family bathroom or guest bath, your ceramic tile floors can withstand heavy floor traffic due to the materials resistance to abrasion and tread wear. In the bathroom your tiles are exposed to many different cleaning agents. It’s good to know that ceramic tiles are highly resistant to chemical agents as well as having the qualities of color permanence so exposure to direct sunlight will not cause you tiles to fade.
Ecologically Friendly – For the most part ceramic tiles are made from natural materials such as sand, clay and glass. Often these materials are put together with other recycled ingredients to form the ceramic tiles used in our baths. Today many of the ceramic tiles used in bathroom renovations are made from environmentally friendly recycled content collected from around the globe. Another benefit of ceramic tile in your bath is that tile has some insulating properties which can help to minutely reduce your energy bills.
Easy Maintenance – Stain fighting and easy maintenance, unlike natural stone, ceramic tile in your bath is easy to maintain. Except for the weekly cleaning schedule to keep your tiles looking pristine, there is no special upkeep involved. To get the most benefit out of your ceramic tile, you may however want to occasionally seal the grout lines to ensure water fastness. And don’t forget that a ceramic tile floor that is installed properly will not go “out of whack[...]</itunes:summary> <itunes:author>bathroomgurureview.com</itunes:author> <itunes:explicit>no</itunes:explicit> <itunes:block>no</itunes:block>

<feedburner:origEnclosureLink>http://www.bathroomgurureview.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/Ceramic-Tile-Benefits.mp3</feedburner:origEnclosureLink>

Updating Your Shower Stall

Showers / Tubs

Bath

bath design

bathroom

choosing a shower

choosing the right shower enclosure style

customizing your shower enclosure

framed shower

frameless shower enclosure

full body sprays

Install Prefabricated Shower Stall

multiple-showerheads

replace your existing shower stall

replacing your shower system

shower conversion

shower enclosure

steam showers

tub-to-shower conversion

updating your shower enclosure

updating your shower stall

upgrading a shower stall

So you have a little extra cash and you have decided to spend it on updating your shower stall to revitalise the look of your bathroom. Ok, now what? Choosing the right shower style when remodeling your bath will not only impact the aesthetics of the room but also how effectively you will be able to use the facility. Too big a shower stall will make the room seem crowded or too fancy an enclosure will just make it seem out of place. When updating your shower stall you have to take into consideration who will be using the shower, how much space you have, and how much money you are willing to spend on your shower upgrade. Time and knowledge is also important. Whether or not you should do the work yourself or get a professional bath installation company to come in and refit your shower are all valid concerns you should take into account before you make any hasty decisions you will regret later.
"Summary: Updating your shower stall can dramatically improve the usability and beauty of your bathroom. Choosing a frameless shower design when updating your shower enclosure will open up your bath space. Replace your tub with a shower stall to create space for storage."
Ok, so when updating your shower stall, what are your shower remodeling options? First decide upon the shower conversion style that you want then choose the appropriate accessories. For the most part a shower is just three or four walls and a shower head. Should you have to customize your shower enclosure, your choice of shower head design will influence the overall look and feel of your bathing area and give it a distinctive style. Fortunately, shower heads come in a variety of stylistic choices to match just about any interior scheme and bath remodeling budget.
Choosing a shower style in the process of “bringing up to date” the look of your bathroom, all boils down to space and bathroom usage patterns. If this is the only bathroom in your home then space and privacy will be very important for multiple users. To get the right “fit”, before updating your shower stall, look around your bathroom and take note of the angles and slopes in the room. Is your bathroom square or rectangular? What about the silhouettes and angles of your fixtures and vanity. Are there round corners throughout the room? To effectively integrate your new shower stall into your present bathroom design you need to make it blend in by choosing the right shower design so it doesn’t stick out like a sore thumb.
One of the most confusing decisions a bath remodeler has to make is whether to choose a framed or frameless shower stall. However, there is a trend among bath designers toward allowing more light into the shower enclosure, this in turn allows for the enhancement of the overall atmosphere in the bathing area and opens up the space. Frameless showers are however more expensive because they use thicker glass but this cost is offset by the more luxurious and elegant appearance. There is also a trend in shower design towards larger shower styles and shower stalls with seats and benches for aging homeowners so they can take a load off when cleaning up. Needless to say, multiple showerheads, full body sprayers, and steam showers are also becoming popular for those updating their shower stalls in hopes of creating a spa like atmosphere.
While replacing your shower system, repetition of colors and surface materials such as tile patterns will also help maintain consistency within the space.
