(Photo: REUTERS/Eric Thayer)

If you desire to help those who have been impacted by the tornado in Joplin, Missouri, there will be several ways to participate with us over the next few days and in the upcoming weeks. We are coordinating with other Acts 29 churches in the affected area to determine when and how to most effectively meet the longer term needs as the situation continues to develop.

There are currently two immediate opportunities to help:

	1. Physical donations

A family from Austin Stone is heading to Joplin this weekend to help the community they called home during their college years. They will be driving their truck along with a trailer to deliver supplies to several local churches.

We will be collecting supplies on Wednesday and Thursday (5/25-5/26) from 9am to 5pm at the For the City Center. Please drop off these items inside the front entrance of the center.

For a list of items, please click here: Joplin Donation List

Please do not bring any items that are not mentioned on this list as space is limited and these have been designated the most important items.

If you cannot deliver your items during the times listed above, please contact Rex Stanley at 512-537-3292 to make other arrangements.

	2. Financial donations

One of the most efficient ways to help during this time is by donating financially. Donating financially allows those who are currently on the ground to quickly and efficiently meet the wide variety of needs they encounter during this initial phase of recovery.

The Acts 29 Network is coordinating relief efforts through local churches in the area. You can learn more about how our network of churches is responding by reading this post: Donate to Joplin Tornado Relief

The Journey, a fellow Acts 29 church in St. Louis, has set up a special Joplin relief fund to assist in the recovery. You can donate to the Joplin relief fund by visiting this page: https://journeyon.onthecity.org/give/login

Finally, please continue to pray for the many who are grieving and for those who are striving to serve their neighbors in the name of Christ.

One Year Anniversary of India Stabbing [Make Disciples]

Today is the one year anniversary of our mugging and my stabbing in India. Last year, I wrote this paper reflecting on what God had taught me through the whole incident. A couple months later, I preached this sermon further explaining what God has done in me since the attack.

I've moved on from the attack in India. I'm pressing on in ministry. But I have learned a few more things in the past year that I hope will sharpen you and prepare you for your day of suffering.

Physical trauma is always linked to emotional trauma. I've learned through this attack as well as the arthritis in my foot that daily plagues me that physical pain leads to emotional pain and emotional pain often leads to physical pain. The emotional pain of suffering is often more lasting than physical pain. By far, most of my temptation to unbelief in God since the attack has been due to emotional trauma and not physical trauma. My face feels fine now... my spirit is often racked with temptation to fear. Fear tempts me every day. The temptation is subtle and deep, but it is there. The fear is mostly for my family. Fear is squarely grounded in unbelief, as is all sin. I'm thankful for emotional and physical trauma for revealing layers of unbelief of which I must daily repent. I repent and cling to the cross of Jesus. I cling to promises like Josh. 1:9: "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go." Amazingly, Josh. 1:9 was the 'life verse' that my parents have prayed for me since I was born.

I've learned that God uses broken people to lead broken people. As I shared with thousands of people what happened to us in India, I began to notice that the most encouraging thing that I could share with them was the stories of my weakness and struggles and God's grace and power in helping me overcome those struggles. People are encouraged when they hear and follow leaders that are weak in themselves, but strong in Christ. It was said of the Messiah, "a smoldering wick he will not quench" (Matthew 12:20). While Jesus does not quench the wick, he blows his life giving breath on the smoldering flame so that it bursts into a conflagration!

Suffering really is, ultimately, good for us. It is good for our joy as we are forced to embrace God over and above the hollow and evanescent thrills that come from earthly activity. It is good for our prayer life because we remember that, let's face it, prayer is the most strategic and transformative activity in the world. It is good for our humility because we are desperately and dependently thrust into the mercies of God for all our needs. It is good for sharpening our focus on the few things in this world that really matter. It is good for our love of the Bible, because we learn that nothing - absolutely no other spoken or written word - encourages us so deeply and so lastingly as the written Word of God. It is good for our relationships with others, because our the memory of suffering becomes our source of compassion for others. It is good for our heart, because suffering is a sharp mirror into the heart. It is good for our families, because the stories of our sufferings and God's faithfulness build a lineage of faith in our children upon which they may build their own faith. It is good for evangelism, because our response to suffering testifies to the world what or who is on the throne of our hearts. Lastly, it is good for worship, because we learn to leap into the protective and comforting arms of our Savior.

On Sunday, Matt taught from Genesis chapter 18, continuing the series Faith Is: Laughing at the Promises of God. We learned through Abraham and Sarah that no matter what you are going through, God is bigger and, as Luke 1:37 says, “Nothing is impossible with God.”

	Consider these things:

-Think of a circumstance in your life where you felt as if that situation was bigger than God.

-How did you try to deal with that situation without God? What was the result?

-How did you try to deal with the situation through studying scripture passages and prayer? What was the result?

-Matt showed how Jesus talked to God in an impossible situation in Mark 14:36 where Jesus said, “Abba, Father, all things are possible for you.” How does the attitude of Jesus differ from yours in that difficult moment?

-What circumstances from your past do look back on now and laugh in wonder at how God came through in an impossible way?

Pray: God we know that nothing is impossible for You and You follow through on Your promises. We pray that You grow our faith.

On Sunday Jeff taught from Genesis chapters 16 and 17 on what faith is in seeing the unseen. We learned that at times, God must bring us to a place of nothing, so that the world can look at us and say, “Only God could do that.”

	Consider these things…

	1. Think of a situation in your life where you became frustrated because you thought God owed you something.

	2. How could you have reacted differently?

	3. In light of this, what character do you relate with most in Genesis 16? Why?

	4. In Genesis 16v13, Hagar makes a declaration saying, “You are a God of seeing.” The idea of a God seeing in the Old Testament is identical to God caring. Can you remember a time that God pursued you with care even though you were running from him?

Pray: God open our eyes and let us see! That we may be unwavering in our devotion to Him!

America is fat with people who speak of peacemaking, but barren of peacemaking practitioners. One glaring exception within the religious mix is Bob Roberts. Bob is an exceptional Texas pastor with a passion for multi-faith reconciliation through relationship building. I’m excited that he is inviting others to benefit from his nation shifting reconciliation work through the upcoming Global Faith Forum.

I think one of the simplest solutions to global tensions between faith systems and ethnicities is to get people in the same room and make them rub shoulders with each other. A February 2009 National Association of Evangelicals survey of evangelical leaders reported that almost three quarters of evangelical leaders have had no close contact with Islamic institutions or individual Muslims. Relational distance between Muslims and Christians in America is a tragedy in the making. We need to ensure that all evangelical Christians in our time are relationally connected with people of other faiths!

The simplest method of peacemaking between people of different faiths is friendship building! True friendship requires active and humble listening. This means that we should care what people of other faiths think, what they feel, and what they do. The natural way to understand others is in the context of a relationship.

After humble listening, we should process what we have heard with wisdom. This wisdom must be shaped by God’s love for all people demonstrated in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, not by our ethnicity or politics. Wisdom that flows from the river of God’s love is, “first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere” (James 3:17). Unfortunately, I’m afraid that the actions of Christians towards people of other faiths, especially Muslims, are not characterized by purity, peace, gentleness, reason, mercy, good fruits, impartiality, and sincerity.

Jesus said, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God” (Matthew 5:9). I want to be blessed. I want God to call me His son. I want to be a peacemaker. Therefore, I’m going to the Global Faith Forum and I invite you to join me.

Join us this Sunday, September 5th, at either 9:15am or 11:15am for one of our preview services at the St. John Campus. We'll be working out the kinks in our new facility by having worship services to learn from. We'll be running our full programming (including childcare), but in learning mode - so you can expect things to not be perfect yet. Even if you are planning to worship normally at Austin High, we invite you to check out the St. John campus now, before our grand opening on September 12th.

The St. John campus is nearing completion. This past Sunday, volunteers went through orientation and on-site training, video streaming from Austin High School was tested, and chairs were set out for the first time.

This Wednesday, TeenRock will start their Wednesday night high school gatherings in the worship space. If you're a high school student, check it out.

As the pictures below show, we're getting really close to the grand opening on September 12. It's going to be awesome!

We are looking for a handful of volunteers to serve international students every Wednesday afternoon for a couple of hours in an English conversation club. The class will start Sept. 1, every Wed. from 2:45 - 4:15 at the Baptist Student Ministry. The volunteers are asked to help set up the room, facilitate discussion on a variety of topics including Christian holidays, beliefs, marriage and dating, education, movies and entertainment, etc., and basically and most importantly show the love of Christ to these students. This is a really "low bar" opportunity to get engaged with the nations here in Austin! If you are interested, please let us know by emailing makedisciples@austinstone.org!

TeenRock (High School) will officially launch the Fall Semester on Wednesday, August 25, 2010.

As an added bonus, this official launch will happen at the new St. John Campus in the Worship Center. TeenRock will be meeting there from now on.

For those of you who are hearing about this for the first time, the St. John Campus is located at 500 E. St. John Street (at the corner of Duval and St. John on the West side of I35). Students should arrive between 6PM and 7PM for food and fellowship. Students from Reagan High School needing transportation can meet at Reagan where TeenRock volunteers and leaders will be available to transport.

TeenRock will begin a little after 7PM and conclude before 9PM.

Please help us in spreading the word and telling friends and families about this momentous occasion in Student Ministry at The Austin Stone Community Church.

This week is KidStuff Recruitment Week! The goal of this week is to get the word out about KidStuff, and get enough new leaders to have two fully-staffed KidStuff teams by the Grand Opening of our new St John campus. We are excited about having two different locations of KidStuff on Sundays - that means more opportunities to share the gospel with kids!

You can help with this KidStuff recruitment event in three ways:

Sign up to serve. There are a lot of different ways to get involved. To check out the many opportunities and sign up, click here.

Spread the word. Let others know about KidStuff Recruitment Week through Twitter, Facebook, email, or good-old-fashioned word of mouth. Here is a tweet-friendly link: http://austinstone.org/s/3217

Pray. We are asking God to bring the exact right people to our team, we would love for you to join us in that.

Thanks for your help in bringing the gospel to children and families all over Austin.

On Sunday, Jeff taught from Hebrews 1 about how our God is a God who speaks. He explained that, in the Old Testament, God spoke through the prophets, but in the last days (today), God has spoken through Jesus who is more powerful, more intimate, and more faithful.

Here are a few things to consider:

Think of a few times in life when you didn't understand what God was doing (a job that you didn't get, a death in the family, etc).

Did you ever wish that God would just speak to you and explain what was going on? Why?

In light of your response above, do you think that your life reflects that Jesus is a better way for God to have spoken, as the scripture says?

Pray that God would change your heart so that the Holy Spirit would point you to Jesus, instead of you hoping for God to speak.

Here's what your Junior Detectives learned this week in Don Dangerfield's KidStuff Detective Academy. Don knows that God has all the answers. And even though he knows that we will never know as much as God does, He has given us ways that we can learn the answers to a lot of things from Him. All summer long, your children will be learning ways to seek God to the answers to life's questions.

Casey Clue joined us again in our Preschool Department, asking your children to use the skills they have learned in the first five weeks of the Detective Academy to solve a mystery. Casey and our preschoolers worked together this week to solve the mystery: How did Jesus show love to the world? We looked at John 3:16-18 to help us solve this great mystery.

Check out the Big Talk card for our memory verse and an activity to do with your children to build off of this lesson.

In Grade School, we taught the same basic lesson as Preschool, but more in depth. Our Grade School Junior Detectives worked together to solve the mystery: Why did Jesus have to die? They were asked to come up with their own Bottom Line and present it in the large group time, and they came up with some pretty great answers! They looked at Genesis 3 and Romans 3:23, 5:8, 6:23, and 10:9-13 to get them starting to think about why Jesus had to die.

Don wrote a letter to your Junior Detective this week letting them know about their upcoming graduation from the KidStuff Detective Academy at a special KidStuff FX graduation ceremony this Sunday in the PAC in between the 9AM and 11:15AM services. He also encouraged them as Junior Detectives to pass along their new detective skills and training to anyone else they know.

On Sunday, Afshin Ziafat spoke on Matthew 16 stating that the most important thing about us is how we answer the question: Who do we say Jesus is? He explained through his testimony that the answer to this question can be dangerous and can reveal the great cost of following Jesus.

	Answer the following questions honestly:

Make a list of times in your life where you were at a crossroads--you could either follow Jesus at a great cost or turn your back on Him.

How did you respond in those times? Did you press into Jesus or did you run away from Him?

Based on your responses, what does your life say about who you say Jesus is?

Pray that God would grant you the grace to honestly believe that Jesus is the Christ.

Camp Olive Grove: An Acts 2 Community + A Matthew 28 Mission [Make Disciples]

[The following is a post from Michelle Slape, after her return from a short term trip serving the unreached in Central Asia this summer]

After just 2 days at Camp Olive Grove I found myself thinking, man, I really want to come back next year…but made myself wait to verbalize it until after I’d been there at least a week! When talking with one of my co-counselors, Jeremy, about my love for camp and how much I enjoyed every minute at Olive Grove he said something profound. “It’s because we’re living in community like the Bible talks about.” WOW. He hit the nail on the head. For 2.5 weeks I got to eat, work, play, sleep, pray, worship and study the Bible with other believers daily. Basically in our own small way, we were a living example of the Acts 2 church:

They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common. Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved. – Acts 2:42-47

Not only that, but we had all come to camp on “mission” for Christ. To serve the kids at camp with everything we had.

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." – Matt 28:19-20

	And God honored our/His mission!

One story I want to share is about a girl named Suzan. Suzan is 15 and has been going to Olive Grove for several years. Two years ago she wanted to accept Christ and profess her faith by Baptism, but was too afraid of what her father would say/do, so she suppressed these desires. One night at camp we were sitting at dinner talking about another camper who was to get baptized when Suzan told me that she had wanted to get baptized for a while. We started talking about the importance of public profession of faith and why she wanted to do it and I could tell she was certain. The one thing holding her back was her father who is Muslim.

Her mom is Christian and is supportive of Suzan, but she required Suzan to get her father’s blessing. It is a camp policy to call the parents to get their consent before baptizing, so we knew we’d need to call Suzan’s father. She was super nervous about this and we just started praying right at that moment for God to work in her father’s life to give him understanding towards her decision. We couldn’t reach the parent’s that night, so we prayed for 24 hours. The next evening we got word that by God’s favor he had said YES! And Suzan would finally be baptized along with 6 others from camp [pictured below]! Praise the Lord!!! This situation really opened my eyes to the freedoms we have in America to choose our faith. And how real oppression is in other parts of the world!

The verse God most used to change my life during this trip is Matt 10:39, Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. For the first time in my life I was faced with the question, “What does it look like for me to ‘lose’ my life?” I’m still asking myself this question every day. It’s a really hard concept for me to grasp, but Lord willing, I understand it more and more each time I come before Him for guidance. This trip was truly life changing for the kids and for me. I had no idea I had so much to learn about God’s character, my sin, and His design for our lives and the church.

	[View Blog Series]

The second avenue The Austin Stone has taken with refugee ministry is the Village Community Center. The Village Apartments on Lamar have a relatively large population of refugees as it is one of several complexes where refugees are resettled by Refugee Service of Texas (RST) in Austin.

In contrast to refugee family adoption, the Community Center enables us to impact the lives of many refugee families as opposed to one.The Austin Stone, along with Westover Hills Church of Christ and Hope in the City, have rented out an apartment in the Villages, known as the Village Community Center.

The front room has been transformed into a multi-purpose room of sorts with whiteboards, sewing machines and computer access. From here, refugee children get help with their homework, ESL classes are taught, and Burmese women learn to use sewing machines.

The back room has become a children’s area, furnished with a blackboard and chalk, TV/VCR and videos, various toys and games, and lots of books. Here children can play after they are finished with homework or while their parents are learning in the front room. There are approximately 10 refugee children who regularly take advantage of this opportunity and receive help with their homework.

The Village Community Center, maybe most importantly, serves as a safe and loving place for refugees, a place where they are met with friendly faces and loving conversation.

Through partnerships with other churches, hundreds of refugees have experienced American Culture through two Christmas parties, one Halloween party, and an Independence Day party.

The Austin Stone has also assisted RST by hosting two orientations for new refugees. These have been held in the church offices with approximately 110 total refugees being welcomed to Austin.

On Sunday, Darrin Patrick from The Journey in St. Louis taught on how we, as Christians, often times find our contentment in material things instead of God. Instead of seeking contentment in Him, we seek it in our life situations, our families, technology, etc, when we should really be seeking contentment in the only thing that can satisfy--God.

Here are a few things to consider:

Rate your contentment on a scale from 1-10. Why do you think you feel this way?

What are some things outside of God that you try to find contentment in? What do you believe will really make you happy outside of Him?

Knowing what these things are, pray that God would grant you the grace to not find contentment in them, but in Him instead.

Pray that God would be your strength and would be in control in your life.

On Sunday, Pastor J.D. Greear from the Summit Church in North Carolina taught from John 12 on God’s heart for unreached people groups. He explained that God desires believers to lay down their lives for the sake of the Gospel and preach His message to all peoples.

Here are a few things to ponder:

How would your heart change if you viewed people who don't know Jesus as individuals and not just a statistic?

How can you best use your giftings to help reach the lost?

Pray that God would change your heart towards unreached people groups.

Pray that God would show you the best way to leverage your talents in reaching those who don't know Jesus.

Last Thursday afternoon, during one of Austin's finest thunderstorms, our staff and elders and the For the City Network's staff met up at the St. John Campus to spend some time in prayer over the new and renovated space.

It was a surreal experience for many who have spent hours dreaming and thinking and praying and working towards the opening of this second campus to see it so close to completion.

Matt and Dave talked about what God's done to bring this new tool to fruition and previewed the months ahead. We then broke up in smaller groups and spread out through the different wings of the building to pray specifically for the Non-Profit Center and its initial tenants, for the children's area and the next generation of believers who will grow up there, and for our equipping space and the people who will be trained for mission.

Finally, we reconvened in the auditorium and took time writing prayers and scripture on the bare concrete stage. Our writing will be covered up with a fresh coat of paint before the campus opens, but we wanted to add these hopes and truths to the very foundation of the spot where many will hear the name of Jesus, and encounter the good news of the gospel.

We can't wait for the construction to finish and to be able to open this space. It will be a tool, not a cathedral, but it's a tool we pray will be used for God's glory long after us.

On Sunday, Ronnie taught from Hebrews 11 on the difference between saving faith and “shameful” faith. Saving faith is a faith that realizes that we are sojourners on this earth, the earth is not our home, and that all of God’s promises will not be fulfilled in this life. “Shameful” faith finds satisfaction in the things of this world and security in salvation through what they know about God (facts alone), instead of actually knowing Him.

Write down a few instances where it was difficult to have faith in God’s	promises (sufferings, trials, tribulations, etc).

What was your response to those times? Did you press further into God or draw away from Him?

How	would someone with saving faith respond in those times? How would someone with “shameful” faith respond?

Pray that God would grant you saving faith

Matt taught us that faith is believing what God has said and trusting our lives into it. Here are some questions to help you process through the sermon:

What are some symptoms in your life that might indicate that you are not trusting what God has said? Look for sources of anxiety, frustration, jealousy, or discontentment.

What are some specific things God says in His word that would provide you comfort if you believed them to be true?

Pick a couple of verses that provide you with truth and memorize them, praying and thinking on them throughout your week and asking God to build faith in you through them.

Here's what your Junior Detectives learned this week in Don Dangerfield's KidStuff Detective Academy. Don knows that God has all the answers. And even though he knows that we will never know as much as God does, He has given us ways that we can learn the answers to a lot of things from Him. All summer long, your children will be learning ways to seek God for the answers to life's questions.

Casey Clue joined us again in our Preschool Department, asking your children for help finding the clues that Don left behind. These clues tell us ways that God gives us to learn the answers from Him. Casey and our preschoolers learned this week that God gives us the Holy Spirit, which guides us and teaches us and reminds us what God says in the Bible. We can trust that the Holy Spirit is our Helper. We learned from John 14:15-17, 15:26, and 16:8-15.

Check out the Big Talk card for our memory verse and an activity to do with your children to build off of this lesson.

In Grade School, we taught the same basic lesson as Preschool, but more in depth. Our Grade School Junior Detectives learned that God has all the answers and that He gives us the Holy Spirit to find some. We learned from John 14:26 that the Holy Spirit lives in us when we believe in Jesus, and He is our guide who teaches us and helps us remember all that Jesus has said.

The God Time Cards link will take you to a week-long REAP excercise (read, examine, apply, pray) that your children can do on their own, or that you can do with them. You can learn more about the REAP method yourself here. The Bulletin Board page is a summary of what we taught, including the memory verse passage your grade school children will be learning all summer long.

Here are some recent photos from the St. John Campus. As you can see, things are progressing at a rapid pace. The "store fronts" for the non-profit tenants are mostly completed with plenty of glass doors and windows, lots of painting has been happening recently, and air conditioning work is well underway.
