Hello friends!

Since my last post I've been to Fort Myers, Miami, Orlando, all the way up to Amelia Island, and back to St. Pete! I spent a few days in Miami with Mary organizing my pages for the 2009 Pageant Program Book and helping her with some miscellaneous work. It's neat to be on this side of the pageant - 'in the know'! Although it is strange that my year is coming to a close, I am looking forward to pageant week and am excited to start the next chapter. My adventures as Miss Florida have opened incredible doors that I can't wait to open wider and explore!

While I was in Miami I also was honored to attend the Classic Car Show put on by the Miss Broward County Scholarship Pageant in Fort Lauderdale. It was great to see the Broward County local titleholders and we had fun mingling with the guests and checking out the fabulous classic cars!! Dr. Dauer, who owned the Classic Car Museum where the event was held, allowed us to sit in the driver's seat of some of the cars and showed us the authentic parts and apholstery that makes the cars "classic".

At the conclusion of the event all of the titleholders acted as backup dancers for a Marilyn Monroe impersonator as she sang "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend". It was a blast and the crowd loved it!

After that we gave out awards for the cars that were a part of the show and thanked everyone for coming. Great job to Brenda, her Board, and all of her titleholders! They plan on making this a regular fundraiser for their pageant, so keep your ears open for their next show!

After Miami I made the 7 hour drive to Norma's house on Amelia Island. Whew! Thank goodness for iPod's! I arrived in the evening and spent a few minutes talking with Norma before I crashed! The next day I was able to spend a few hours on the beach, just taking in the beautiful atmosphere and gathering my thoughts for the speaking engagements I had while I was there. It was SO nice to have some time to just stop and relax, uninterrupted. I've realized that I didn't do that enough this past year. I was so focused on doing as much as I could, that I think sometimes I missed out on just taking in the experience. To Miss Florida 2009, and really, to all of us in life - take time to absorb, enjoy, and reflect on your incredible journey.

That evening I spoke to a group at Blackrock Baptist Church and got to see the Rodeffer family again. They are such wonderful people - so encouraging! The following morning I went to Mr. Rodeffer's sister's house for a brunch with around twenty middle/high school girls from her church. Suellen was so sweet and we had some great girl time! I spoke about my year as Miss Florida and talked to them about purity and their personal relationships with God.

We also watched my "Year in the Life" DVD so they could see my dance. I had just enough time to sign some autographs and then it was off to a "fish fry" at the home of one of Mr. Rodeffer's former teachers. We were welcomed to the beautiful property with open arms and I was super excited because I had never been to a real fish fry before! Although I'm not one for fried food, I gave the fish a try and really enjoyed the popcorn shrimp! After speaking with some of the members from the School Board who were in attendance, we headed back to Norma's so I could rest for a little while before heading off to First Baptist Church of Callahan for their Wednesday night youth group.

What a great group of young people! Their band played a few worship songs and then I spoke. Afterward I signed autographs and had the chance to talk to and pray with some of the students. It was truly a blessing for me.

The following day I made my way back to St. Pete for "Princess Night" at Chick-fil-A. It was a huge success! The 2009 Sungoddess was there as well as Jewel Ann, our Miss Florida Sunshine Princess, but we weren't the only crowns there...there were over one hundred little girls dressed as their favorite Princess!

The Chick-fil-A Cow and my favorite ride, the horse-drawn Cinderella carriage, gave free rides to the girls outside. The event benefitted the Children's Dream Fund and part of the proceeds went to a young girl named Ryleigh who has leukemia. She was precious!

A special thank you and congrats to the Management and Staff at the Chick-fil-A on 4th Street for such a wonderful evening. I know many young girls felt like real princesses and were truly inspired by the festivities.

Kids and Crowns

Hello!

Since my last post I made two very special appearances. I had the honor of visiting my elementary school for their Career Day and 5th Grade Graduation/Awards Ceremony! It was so neat to be back at Three Oaks! For Career Day I spoke to three groups of 5th grade girls about my job as Miss Florida. They were very excited and attentive and, apparently, the boys were jealous! They, however, did get a chance to meet me at the Awards Ceremony a few days later.

At the Awards Ceremony I had a very enthusiastic welcome as I spoke briefly to the students about what to expect when they go to middle school and how important it is to believe in yourself, respect others, and make good decisions. I enjoyed watching each of the students receive their awards as hundreds of memories from my own elementary years raced through my mind.

Afterward I took pictures with the students and, for the first time, signed some of the boys' foreheads!! (With their parents' permission of course!)

All in all, it was such a neat experience. It was amazing to realize how much I have done since I was at Three Oaks and to see the pending potential in these young people.

Prior to Career Day I had the opportunity to visit another elementary school in Fort Myers - Edison Park Elementary. There I shared my "V.I.P." message with the students and had a surprisingly intellectual Q & A session. The students were so bright and well-behaved. Getting to meet them and sign autographs afterward was truly a treat!

On Saturday, the 6th, I was back in St. Pete for the Walk for Lupus Now at Tropicana Field. I was joined by Dr. Morales and his daughter, Michelle, who has Lupus. I was honored to be a part of their fundraising and had a great time meeting and signing autographs for the participants.

I also helped FOX 13 anchor, Nerrisa Prest, draw tickets for the live auction. It was amazing to see all of the support and enthusiasm that filled the field. With all of the money raised, it was a very successful event!

Immediately following the Walk I got on the road to Orlando to perform in D & L Dance's end of the year Recital. I was invited by the owner, Lori Patai, whom I met through the Miss America's Outstanding Teen pageant as she was the RN on duty during the week. I was thrilled when she called! At the beginning of the show she introduced me on stage and I shared about how dance helped me earn scholarships through pageants. Backstage I was surrounded by little girls who were super excited to meet Miss Florida and were eyeing my crown with sly smiles...a few girls said they would gladly take it when I was done with it! It was hilarious!

I only have a few more appearances left before the 2009 Pageant, but am feeling really good about all that I have done this year. This last month is a strange time, but it as given me the opportunity to reflect and soak up this year, which is really necessary after such a grand adventure. In my final days, I am making sure I am taking time to stop and smell the roses (or as Miss Florida, the beach!) before it's too late.

Wrapping up the month of May

Hello!

It's hard to believe that today is June 1st! This year is just flying by...but I'm staying busy as the 2009 Miss Florida Pageant approaches!

On May 22nd I went to my favorite Chick-fil-A in Fort Myers for their first "Princess Night". The restaurant was packed with little girls dressed up like their favorite Princess. There were tiaras everywhere! I took pictures with the girls and signed autographs as I admired their adorable outfits.

The Owners, who are also friends of mine, had crafts and other fun activities set up for the girls and everyone had a great time. They sent me home with a fresh chicken sandwich and some coupons for the road!

Miss Florida loves Chick-fil-A!!

The next day I drove up to Winter Garden with Dana for Allison Krieger's (Miss FL '06) wedding! I had so much fun riding up with Dana - quality time and Starbucks... :). The wedding was absolutely beautiful! Allison looked gorgeous and it was so neat to watch her and Brian interact during the ceremony. They were precious!

The reigning "Miss"es and our fabulous Board! We have way too much fun...

On Sunday I visited Catalyst Ministries in Bonita Springs, just south of Fort Myers, and was featured as the main speaker for the service. My family and I were so blessed by the church and the genuine fellowship we found there. We had a wonderful time getting to join another ministry in worshiping our great God. He is so faithful in providing times of refreshing during this very busy year! Afterward we were treated to lunch at T.G.I.Friday's, one of my favorite restaurants!

I spent Memorial Day in Fort Myers with my family and we celebrated with dinner, by yours truly ;), and a movie. I made our favorite "Florentine" turkey meatballs (courtesy of Rachael Ray) with angel hair pasta and a new tomato-basil sauce (courtesy of Wolfgang Puck) that turned out to be delicious!! That one is going in my recipe book!

On Tuesday I did a "Right Decisions, Right Now" presentation at Gulf Middle School in Cape Coral and on Thursday I presented at two more schools in Pinellas County - Osceola Middle and Azalea Middle.

Osceola was a smaller group of around 100 students and Azalea was a lot of fun because it was just girls. We had some great "girl talk"!

On Friday night I gave the "Commencement Address" at Sonrise Christian School's graduation in Lakeland. It brought back memories of my own graduation and it was truly an honor to be a part of the ceremony. I got to spend some time with Miss Florida Citrus, Kristen Smith, and her mentor Cathy Asbridge who hosted me for the night!

On Saturday night I went to "Taste of Pinellas" at the Vinoy Park in downtown St. Pete with Miss St. Petersburg, Katie Crews. We were introduced on-stage with Mayor Baker and had the chance to promote the 2009 pageant. It was a gorgeous night and we had fun mingling with the crowd!

Afterward I went off to the Telethon at All Children's Hospital (our local CMN hospital) to present them with a check for $5,264 from the Miss Florida Pageant. It was exciting to be a part of such a dynamic group of contributors and to be able to make the service-oriented heart of our organization known!

When I first arrived I met two very cute little boys who had told their stories on-camera earlier in the day. They were both benefiting from the services at All Children's Hospital and were excited to take a picture with Miss Florida!

Today I completed my RDRN tour at Thurgood Marshall Middle School in St. Pete. I appeared on their school news and then spoke to two sixth grade classes. I had a great time visiting with the students and felt proud as I left, reflecting back over the twenty middle schools I visited all over the state this past year.

Just like my platform...Believe and Achieve!

Whew! That was a long one! Thank you for following my journey and allowing me to share this with you...one more month! This "adventure" is not over yet!

Dancing with the Stars!

Hello friends!

Last weekend was our 2009 Contestant Orientation. What a great weekend! I was so excited to meet all of the contestants and share some of my experiences from my year with them.

On Saturday morning Courtney and I took pictures with all of the girls and then each had the opportunity to speak to the contestants and their parents. I also modeled the Opening Number/On-stage Question dress for the Misses and everyone loved it!

Before we knew it it was time to get ready for the Salute - our "Dancing with the Stars" themed tribute to Miss Florida and Miss Florida's Outstanding Teen 2008. As we got our make-up done and slipped into our complimentary gold and silver gowns, we didn't know what to feel! We were excited to celebrate each of our successful years, but also felt like it was coming to an end all too quickly. But as we made our way downstairs and were greeted by our dear friends and family, we couldn't help but smile from ear-to-ear and relish in the moment.

Overall, the evening was just perfect. The contestants were introduced and Courtney and I entered, escorted by our parents, to the "Dancing with the Stars" theme song. It was so much fun! As dessert was being served we showed video/slide shows of our years and then each said our thank-yous and presented awards to our sponsors, friends, and family - those people who made this year unforgettable. Everything went as planned, including having time to get everybody on the dance floor at the end! It was a night to remember!

On Sunday morning I had another chance to speak to the contestants in a smaller setting. I am excited for this group of girls! Pageant week is going to rock!

After the day's activities ended, Mary and I went to a reception for the Japanese leaders of St. Pete's sister city, Takamatsu, at the Progress Energy Center for the Arts Mahaffey Theater (where the pageant will be!). It was an honor to meet the guests, including the mayor of Takamatsu!

The past few days I have spent running around the city securing sponsors for pageant week and taking care of some other "housekeeping". I'll keep you posted on the busy week ahead! Also, I wanted to share some photos from the B.A.B.E. 2 Boyland Event.

Busy, busy!

Hi!

Our 2009 Contestant Orientation and Miss Florida Salute is right around the corner...which means these past couple of weeks have been super busy! In addition to making my usual appearances I've been preparing for our exciting weekend ahead.

Recently I traveled to Lakeland to continue the "Right Decisions, Right Now" tour. I visited four middle schools in two days and had a blast! I owe a special thank-you to Cathy Asbridge, a former Miss Tampa, for arranging the schools and hosting me.

After my trip to Lakeland I headed down to Boynton Beach to speak at an event for women of all ages hosted by Boynton Beach Community Church. It was held at the historic Boynton Beach Women's Club and was absolutely beautiful! Two of my Princesses were able to attend and we all had a great time enjoying the fellowship and the hand-made cupcakes!

From there I went down to Mary's house in Miami to work on some details for this weekend and also to meet with our TV producers (the Miss Florida pageant is going to be televised this year!!). While I was there, Mary took me to South Beach for the first time during my reign and we enjoyed a delicious lunch on Lincoln Road. It was a perfect beach day, so it was super crowded, but tons of fun!

On my way out of town on Tuesday morning I got to go to the filming of Regis and Kelly LIVE! at the Fountain Bleu hotel on Miami Beach. It was so neat!!

Edward, one of our producers, introduced me to Regis and Kelly and they were so nice! Very down-to-earth and really excited to be in Florida. :)

I sat through the majority of the show, but then had to get on the road to West Palm Beach to sing the National Anthem at the "Women in Leadership Awards" at the Convention Center. It was a great success and I got to see a lot of familiar PBA faces!!

From West Palm I headed back to St. Pete for the 3rd Annual "Women of History Tea" at Coachman Middle School. The girls came dressed up as women in history who were the "first" in their field. I spoke to the girls about the Miss America pageant and how it empowers young women, just like the women they were dressed up as.

Can you spot Miss Florida? :)I also spoke about self-respect and respecting and supporting each other as females. The girls and moms really responded when I emphasized how valuable each of them were and how they deserve the best! I shared with them my commitment to absitence and explained the reasoning behind it - you are worth the wait!

On Saturday I teamed up with Andrea Stephens, Ayiesha Woods, and other local performers and spoke to over 500 young girls on the "Perks of Being Single" at the B.A.B.E. 2 "Boyland" Event in Fort Myers. There was so much energy and enthusiasm, it was great! The whole event flowed really well and the girls soaked up every minute of it.

Well, time marches on! Although I don't want to admit it, today starts the 2-month countdown to the 2009 Miss Florida crown! Crazy! But I am excited for all of the new girls and I just say a prayer that I will make the transition back to normal life smoothly. ;)

Tallahassee...here I come!!

Hello everyone!

This was a monumental week! On Wednesday I made my first trip to our state capital. I flew in on Tuesday and stayed with Martha and Wayne Dewitt. It was great to see them, even for such a short visit. They have a beautiful house and made me feel right at home.

On Wednesday morning I met up with Bill Fleming, Dr. Ed Moore (President of Independent Colleges and Universities of Florida), Bob Boyd (an attorney), and Bill Abare (President of Flagler College) and we made our way over to the capital building.

First, we visited Representative Rachel Burgin who was responsible for getting me recognized on the House floor. She also volunteers for the Miss Tampa pageant and came to Vegas for Miss America!

She escorted me down to the floor and the other gentlemen went to the Gallery to watch. The session began at 9:30am with an inspirational prayer by one of the Representatives and then the Pledge of Allegiance. Before I knew it Rachel and I were walking to the center of the room for my introduction by Representative Proctor. The house members cheered and made me feel very welcome.

After our visit to the House, I was bombarded by youngsters who were there on a field trip. They were so cute!

We posed for some pictures and then made our way to the Governor’s Club for lunch. Just as we were about to order we received a call that the Senate was moving at “lightning speed” and we had to get back there right away! So we hurried back to the capital and waited for my cue. Before long I was brought into the Senate and introduced by Senator Dave Aronberg, who I had previously met in Palm Beach. I met Senate President Jeff Atwater, who is also from Palm Beach, and then the most exciting part happened…he asked me if I would like to say a few words from his rostrum!! I, of course, jumped at the opportunity and took a few moments to thank the Senate, tell them about my platform and the Miss America Organization, and promote the Florida Resident Access Grant, as I am a recipient and it is currently in jeopardy for private universities. How exhilarating!

Following our visit to the Senate we spent about an hour taking pictures with Representatives who wished to do so. Then we met briefly with Governor Crist and posed for a picture. Now I have one with him that is not at a Rays game! ;)

Overall, WOW! What an incredible day. It was so neat to see the heartbeat of our state pumping in the peak of its season. From the lobbyists who crowded the hall to the white-washed walls of the original capital building and the chance to address our state’s most influential leaders, that day will live in my memory forever! (Did I mention that the House said there hadn’t been that much excitement on the floor since Tim Tebow’s visit?!) ☺

At the end of the day I took a plane back to Tampa and went straight to "Evening with the Chef's" on Sand Key Beach. It was the annual fundraiser for the Ryan Wells Foundation, which awards scholarships for young people who are in Culinary School. It was so neat! There were chefs from top restaurants, including the head chef from The Magic Kingdom! He explained his dish to me and let me give the shrimp a quick stir!

Most importantly I helped with the live auction and helped "up" the bids. Overall, the night was a great success and the students who received the scholarships were glowing!

Last weekend was the Miss Florida Sweeps Pageant in Dade City. Dana Judge picked me up on Saturday from St. Pete and we headed up to Dade City where we met the Board for dinner. It was so nice to see everyone and have some time to catch up! We ate at a fabulous restaurant called Kafe Kokopelli's and let's just say, we left our mark!

The next day started bright and early with interviews and rehearsal. I saw some familiar faces and met all of the new contestants. What a dynamic group of young women! Courtney Sexton, our Miss FLOT, was also there. It was so great to see her! I finally got to watch her dance from MAOT and she was fabulous!

Congratulations to our new winners and welcome to the journey toward Miss Florida 2009!

Now back to the present…I am sitting like a bump-on-a-log as I have caught a cold…I got antibiotics on Tuesday, but wasn’t really able to rest until yesterday…I’m hoping to shake it off before I get back on the road so please keep me in your prayers and promise to use hand-sanitizer!

RAYS, Gators, and more!

Hello!

This week the Tampa Bay RAYS kicked off their first Home game at the Trop! On Monday I attended a Street Party downtown where lots of fans came out to support the team and Mayor Baker got up and played the guitar with the band!

By the end of the afternoon I had accomplished my mission of getting a ticket for that evening's game, courtesy of Dr. Sibley and the RAYS Marketing Department. I was in a suite and had such a great time! They hooked me up with a RAYS hat and t-shirt and let me take a picture with the ALCS replica ring! They crushed the Yankees 15-5...did I mention they win every time I'm there? ;)

During the game I did some mingling and got to see Governor Crist. He is always so nice!

On Tuesday I traveled up to Gainesville with Lisa B. to visit the UF Christian Campus House. Despite the tornado warnings that morning, we made it on time! That evening I gave the message for their weekly "Meal and Message" and met the incredible students who make up that ministry. I was blessed and encouraged to see such genuine faith in my peers!

On Wednesday night I spoke to a smaller group of just girls for "Girls Night Out". We had a great time of fellowship and sharing what God is doing in our lives. Again, I was super blessed by the inner beauty these girls possess. Overall, it was a wonderful trip!

Lisa B. and I drove home late that night and had some great 'girl talk'! I had to be in Largo on
Thursday morning for the Pinellas County "State of the Family" Conference where I read the Governor's Proclamation declaring April "Child Abuse Prevention Month".

I stayed for the day-long conference and learned a lot! It was truly inspirational. There were 450 adults from all over Pinellas County who were all there with the same goal - improving the lives and futures of our young people by examining the effects that society has on our family unit.

That evening I attended an event for local foster kids at the Pinellas Park Performing Arts Center. I welcomed them and said a few words at the beginning. Then, the Feurtado brothers shared their awe-inspiring story. They are former drug king-pins who have turned their lives around and are now using their story to inspire kids and keep them off the streets, out of prison, and in school. I was honored to be able to work by their side. They have an amazing ministry!

This morning I rode in the Festival of States Day Parade and then went to Planet Beach for some Florida "sunshine". Stay tuned for more updates!!

The Grand Prix!

Gentlemen...start your engines!!

This past weekend was the Honda Grand Prix in St. Petersburg. Mary has talked about this much-anticipated event all year and now I can understand why! The City turned downtown into an IndyCar race track and the biggest names in racing came to town for some fun in the sun!

The festivities kicked off with the Illuminated Night Parade on Thursday Night. I was thrilled as I approached my ride for the evening...a Cinderella-style horsedrawn carriage!! I squealed with excitement and jumped out of the car to greet my driver and a beautiful horse named Duke.

Also in the parade was Miss St. Petersburg, Katie Crews! It was so great to see her and we had a lot of fun at the party at the Pier after the parade where we saw two of our favorite little princesses!

On Saturday I attended the Le Mans race and got a picture with two of the top finishers. I had a great time mingling with the public and getting accustomed to the event!

That afternoon I also got to ride in the ferris wheel with Mayor Baker and his lovely wife. It was a gorgeous day and we had a fabulous view of the track and the bay from our cart in the sky!

Sunday was the big day! The grounds swarmed with people from all over the world, anxious to cheer on their favorite driver. Katie and I got to ride in the Parade Lap around the track before the race started! I tried to get them to give me the car since it had my name on it, but it didn't work out... :)

Before the race started I was invited to welcome some of the visiting Veterans with Will Power, one of the drivers from Australia. It was such an honor!

Unfortunately I didn't get a picture with the winners of Sunday's race because they were swarmed with fans! However, I did get a pic with Marco Andretti (part of the great Andretti racing family) who I had a chance to hang out with later that night! :)

Overall, this was definitely one of my favorite appearances. I was exposed to a whole new "culture" as I learned a lot about racing and really enjoyed watching the drivers in action!

Special thanks to our Police escort, Bill Doniel, and all of the employees (Robert and Beth...) of the City who made it such a wonderful appearance.

Fundraisers, Schools, and Sungoddesses!

Hello!

I am finally reunited with my computer and can fill you in on my recent appearances! On March 23rd I traveled to West Palm Beach to attend a fundraiser for St. David's Episcopal Church. It was held at Binks Forest Country Club and was a well-attended event. I had a great time mingling with the guests and even had a few dances after dinner! For the evening I modeled the fabulous Badgley Mischka necklace pictured below that was a part of the live auction. Overall, the fundraiser was a great success!

The next day I did a "Right Decisions, Right Now" presentation at Palm Springs Middle School. I had a great time with the students and was interviewed for their school news.

That evening I went to Miami for the Miss University of Miami/Miss Miami Hurricane Pageant. It was great to see Miss UM '08, Emily Cook, and to meet all of the contestants. Emily and I co-emceed and I performed my dance to kick-off the Talent competition. Congratulations to Miss Miami Hurricane '09, Jamie Williams, and Miss UM '09, Jaife Calil!

The next day I traveled back to West Palm to visit "Girl Talk" at Conniston Middle School. I implemented this chapter when I first stared at PBA and it was so neat to be back there! Some of the younger girls I had mentored were still there and we had such a great time together. I spoke to the girls about how to see "singleness" as a gift and encouraged them to see beyond the constant need to have boyfriend.

On my way back to St. Pete I stopped and had dinner with Rob at P.F. Chang's in Tampa. We had a great time catching up!

On Thurday, the 26th, and Friday, the 27th, I participated in events with the 2009 Sungoddess Court. It was so much fun to get to know the girls and Taylor Traviesa, the 2008 Sungoddess. Friday night was the Festival of States/Sungoddess Coronation Ball at the Coliseum in St. Pete. I introduced the contestants as the were escorted to the stage. They all had very impressive Bios!

On Saturday morning I drove to Nordstrom's in Naples for an autograph signing.

I was greeted with a warm welcome by the employees and had a great time meeting lots of customers.

The cosmetics department gave me a very generous goodie bag with some of my favorite products as compensation for the appearance!

From Naples I drove to North Fort Myers for a fundraiser for the Lee County Horseman's Association Relief Fund where I sang "God Bless America", performed my talent, and modeled Western-wear with some local models.

I also helped with the live auction at the end of the event, which made for a very busy appearance! My parents and some friends from church came and the whole event was a great success!

Greetings!

Here's the deal...I've been without my computer for the last week! I left it at Mary's house in a state of confusion and have been trying to survive without it...therefore, this post is slightly outdated, but I wanted to put it up anyway. Imagine that it is March 22 and I just returned from the Miss Tampa pageant...

What a wonderful weekend! On Friday, Mom and I drove to Tampa for the Miss Tampa Pageant dress rehearsal. I had the pleasure of meeting all of the contestants and was super excited to see the outgoing Miss Tampa, who was my roomie at Miss Florida last summer!

On Saturday night the girls rocked it! The most thrilling part of the night was getting to co-emcee with Nicole Johnson, Miss America 1999, who was one of the judges at Miss America this year! I felt so honored to share the stage with her. She was so sweet and she made the inevitably unpredictable job of hosting so smooth and fun!

Congratulations to the new Miss Tampa, Ashley Panaggio as well as the new Miss Zephyrhills, Ashley Ramsey Baton, who was also crowned last night!

This morning mom and I followed Rob down to Lakewood Ranch where we met Dana Judge for the “Samantha’s Friends” Fundraiser Gala and Brunch. What a neat event! The inspiration for this non-profit organization is a precious young woman named Samantha Bozza. A former pageant girl herself, Samantha experienced a brain aneurism when she was 15 years-old that left her facially deformed and unable to walk. Instead of allowing her disability to stand in her way, she is using her story to as a catalyst to make a difference in the lives of disabled persons by providing selected individuals with DOGS. Meeting Samantha was truly inspirational. What an incredible, joyful, gracious, beautiful woman!

Earlier this week I visited Naples High School where I spoke to the 9th graders about my job as Miss Florida and also shared my platform presentation.

I was invited by a freshman guy named George who selected me as a "professional whose career sounds interesting" for an assignment for one of his classes. How flattering! I had such a great time and felt so honored to have been selected. Later I learned that when George had the initial idea some of his classmates were teasing him and saying that I would never come...I was glad I could prove them wrong!

I spent the following two days giving the “Right Decisions, Right Now” presentation at local middle schools in Fort Myers, one of which was my alma mater! It was so neat to be back there and receive such a warm welcome.

On the 14th I went to Homestead for the South Dade Red Cross Ball. I was accompanied by Ann Marie Griffin and we had a wonderful time!

Lissette Gonzalez, Miss Florida 1998, was the hostess for the evening’s events and we judged the “Dancing With The Stars” style competition together. The dancing couples were volunteers from the community paired with local professionals. The routines were great! The fundraiser was a great success!

My computer is on it's way to me! So I will update you with pictures when we are reunited! :) I can't wait to tell you about the Sungoddess Coronation Ball and all of the beautiful candidates I met this past week. Miss America's Homecoming!

Hello everyone!

I just got back from Miss America's Homecoming in Indiana! Last Friday I traveled to Indianapolis/Zionsville/Carmel to participate in events celebrating Katie Stam's win. The trip started out great from the start...on my plane from Tampa I made three new friends from the University of Florida who made the plane ride go by really fast! They were on their way to an Ultimate Frisbee tournament in California! Best wishes guys!

I left the three musketeers on the plane and was welcomed to Indiana with what the natives call "Hoosier Hospitality". Now I know why they are famous for it! Me and the 10 other State Titleholders were treated like royalty! That afternoon we went to Zionsville High School for the Performing Arts to rehearse for the show that night. It was such a great reunion! We got to see Katie and give her a big hug before the show got started. She was still glowing!

For the first half of the show we sat in the audience with our sashes and crowns and enjoyed the entertainment, which included performances by Miss America, Miss America's Outstanding Teen, Miss Indiana's Outstanding Teen, the 4 runners-up from Miss Indiana 2008, and some professional dancers. What a show!

After intermission we performed our talent pieces from Miss America, which was so much fun!! The audience was really receptive and I always love performing! My MAO 2009 sisters who were there include: Miss Arkansas, Miss California, Miss Illinois, Miss Iowa, Miss Kentucky, Miss Michigan, Miss New York, Miss Oklahoma, Miss Tennessee, and Miss Utah. We had a blast!

After the show were were invited to a reception at the home of a former Miss Indiana. She was a lovely host and had a beautiful house. It was a great time to mingle and of course, munch on the amazing hours d'ouvres she served! At the party I met Miss Indiana's Outstanding Teen 2006 who roomed with our very own Miss Florida's Outstanding Teen 2006, Sydney Keister, at the 2007 MAOT pageant! I also met Nicole Rash, Miss Indiana 2007, who was 1st runner-up at Miss America 2008!

The following day was full of fun appearances that the Miss Indiana Organization had planned for us. We went to a really neat boutique that the Miss Indiana Contestants always go to called "The Secret Ingredient". They had super cute stuff!

We were then treated to lunch at the Cobblestone Grill before having a 2 hour autograph session at an art gallery called "The Sanctuary". Later we were informed that around 1100 people came through and we signed at least 400 autographs! Whew! I hardly noticed until it was over and I realized how many pictures I had gone through! It sure was fun though...being there with the other girls...getting to see so many people...especially when they recognized you from TV!

One of my favorite memories from that day is of our ride back to the hotel when our fabulous host Michael (aka "TDH" - Tall, Dark, and Handsome) drove us through Wendy's in a 15 passenger van and got us all Frosties!! And they say "pageant girls don't eat"...ha! We couldn't have been happier with our cookie-dough goodness! (YES, they have cookie-dough Frosties now!)

That evening was the Gala where we had a nice dinner and were each given the chance to tell of our favorite "Katie Moment". I shared about the wonderful lunch we had in Tampa after the Super Bowl. I will never forget that day, as everything was still so fresh and it was so neat to hear about all that Katie had done and was getting ready to do as her year was getting started.

The whole evening was truly beautiful as people shared their hearts and we celebrated Katie and this great Organization. It was an honor to be a part of this very special occasion. Congratulations, again, to Katie, her family, and the Miss Indiana Scholarship Pageant. Go get 'em girl!!

Well, now that my hands official hurt, I am going to call it a night. But I did want to mention that I was able to stay in Indiana for a few days after the Homecoming and see my extended family I have there! It was a great time of fellowship and memory-making. It was neat how I was able to have that little bonus on the trip. My family was literally in the same city as the Homecoming!

Hello Everyone!!

First off all, I would like to congratulate all of our new local titleholders! This weekend I had the honor of attending the Miss Palm Beach County pageant. As you may know, that was my local title last year, so it was great to be back! The girls looked fabulous and I had a great time getting to spend time with them during rehearsal and the live show. I asked the "On-Stage" Question and also co-emcee'd the Evening Wear competition with Jamie Marineau, the reigning Miss Palm Beach County who I crowned after I won Miss Florida. Two of my beautiful princesses were there and we had so much fun!

Last Wednesday I had a very productive meeting with the Juvenile Welfare Board of Pinellas County. We discussed ways that I can be involved in working with at-risk youth in the area and began planning an event for the Contestants during Miss Florida week this summer. I am excited about our plans and can't wait to get to work!

A few days earlier I went to the University of Florida to support the "Unite" Party in their Student Government elections campaign. I gave a brief speech to "pump up" the crowd! It was so much fun to see all of the school spirit and to support the candidates.

But that's not all...I also got to meet Tim Tebow! He was there supporting Jordan, the candidate for President, and also offered some words of wisdom. We only spent a few minutes together, but it was fun to meet our "Mr. Florida"!

Earlier that day I was in Orlando for a visit to "House of Hope". It's a Christ-centered residential campus for teenagers who are overcoming adversity in their lives. What an incredible place! I was truly energized as I learned about the heart of the organization and how young people's lives are being transformed through this ministry. I had the opportunity to share my testimony with the residents and even heard some of their personal stories. It was a privilege to share the afternoon with them and I look forward to another visit!

On February 21 I participated in the "Edison Festival of Light" parade in my hometown of Fort Myers. I was outfitted by White House Black Market "from head to toe" and rode in a white Mustang convertible with two of my Princesses. We had a blast!!

I saw lots of familiar faces as we cruised through downtown and made our way to my high school where we were announced and did one lap around the track before heading back to the starting point. It was an honor to participate and I know I made my city proud!

This journey just keeps getting better! Since Miss America, I have been able to embrace my job as Miss Florida more fully and I am going to keep making the most of the rest of my reign. I am excited about the plans for Miss Florida 2009, although I can't even believe we're thinking about that already! I wish the best of luck to the ladies who have yet to compete in a local and I can't wait to see you all on the road soon!

Why I love Florida...

Greetings!

What a wonderful week it has been! Since my last post I made my first (ever) trip to the 'panhandle'! On Sunday my mom and I made the 8-hour drive to Panama City for the National At-Risk Education Network (NAREN) annual Conference. The car ride actually went by really fast because mom and I had plenty of girl talk to pass the time! We arrived just in time to see the sunset from the balcony of our condo that overlooked the Gulf. It was breathtaking! We then had a delicious dinner before calling it a night!

We spent Monday in a workshop with Dr. Jones, the President of NAREN, and learned a lot about the at-risk youth population and what we can do to help.

That evening we attended the opening reception and I gave the keynote address to welcome everyone to the conference. Educators and Administrators from all over the country came to share their experiences working in alternative learning facilities and to learn the latest trends and techniques in at-risk youth education. I am excited about the development of our partnership and can't wait to see what progress we will make regarding this pressing issue.

On Wednesday my parents and I drove to Palm Beach for the Women of Distinction Luncheon at The Breakers hotel. I assisted in greeting the women and was given the opportunity to say a few words before we ate. After lunch I performed my talent, frying pan and all! From the looks on the guests' faces and the chuckles I could hear, I think it was a hit! It actually left the president of my university, Dr. Clark, speechless as he reclaimed the stage following my performance! It was a privilege to attend this special event and honor a group of women who have made such significant and selfless contributions to their communities.

After my appearance at The Breakers I visited with some of my dear friends before going to my university for a "Homecoming" celebration! As I entered the "Caf" the song "Stand" by Rascal Flatts started playing and everyone cheered. It was really sweet and meant so much to have so much support. It felt really great to be back on campus and I am looking forward to returning in the fall!

That evening I spent the night with some of my best girlfriends and left feeling so refreshed! On Thursday morning I went to Trinity Christian School for a "Right Decisions, Right Now" presentation. I met up with a former Miss Palm Beach County, Kathy Quarles, who was my contact and chaperone.

After the first presentation we went to Starbucks for some iced coffee and then returned to Trinity in time to meet with the high school girls group "Divine Debutantes" during their lunch hour. I gave them some of the etiquette tips I've learned from pageants and spoke with them about the importance of inner beauty. This was a time of genuine 'girls-only' fellowship that I really enjoyed.

After leaving the school I headed up to Tampa and was able to see yet another one of my best girlfriends. In the morning I met up with Ms. Lynne and we drove to Claywell Elementary School to visit some students who would be participating in the Hillsborough County Special Olympics later that day. We were greeted with a bright and warm welcome!

I was then interviewed by four lovely young ladies on the school news.

After meeting a few classes of precious little ones we headed over to Gaither High School to watch the Games!

It was so much fun to see the participants in their various events. They walked, ran, played basketball, and even threw the shot-put! I visited with the athletes and visited the booths at the "Olympic Village" run by the high school students. It was cold outside, but seeing the smiles on the students faces truly warmed my heart. What an incredible event to be a part of!! This was definitely one of my favorite appearances this year.

As you can see, it was one packed week! But it was very rewarding - the busier, the better! I am continuing to learn more about this job everyday and I know my journey is far from over!

Valentines and Veterans

Happy Valentine's Day!

I have been in the Valentine's spirit this whole week as the Veterans Hospitals I visited were lavishly decorated with all sorts of Valentines goodies! On Monday morning I visited the Gainesville VA Hospital and then traveled to visit the VA Hospital in Lake City to celebrate National Hospitalized Veterans week. It was both a privilege and an honor to say thank you to the men, and even some women, who have served our country with such commitment and courage.

Today I visited the VA Hospital in Miami and was accompanied by a group of young soldiers who are currently stationed in South Florida. The most memorable part of this trip was when I met a gentleman named Jack. He was very excited to meet Miss Florida and was full of questions. Before we said goodbye I said thank you for his service and he looked me in the eyes and said "You are the reason we did what we did". Wow...The depth of the heart of service of our Veterans really hit me. I feel so incredibly blessed to live in the country. God bless America!

Last Friday I had the opportunity to meet NFL superstar Tony Dungy! He was signing his brand new book "Uncommon" at a bookstore in Tampa, so my host mom, Barbie, and I made the trip. It was such an honor to meet a man with such integrity and talent who has literally redefined the job of "coaching" a sports team. His profound character and commitment to faith is such an inspiration to me.

The next morning Barbie and I toured a local antique show before I got on the road. We met some very talented artists and I bought a "Florida" pin in the shape of our state. The vendor also gave me the super appropriate license plate in the picture below. I can always count on Barbie for a little bit of culture!

After the show I drove to Orlando and met up with Mary and Rob to attend the Miss University of Central Florida pageant. What a fun night! It was my first time attending a local this year and I was so proud! The production was upbeat and showcased the contestants beautifully. It was so great to see Audra Martin, Miss UCF 2008, in her much-deserved spotlight as she emceed, performed, and passed on her title. Seeing a recap of her year was a perfect example of what this program does for young women. Congratulations to all of the contestants and our new Miss UCF, Dasha Gonzalez!

On Tuesday night I traveled to my hometown of Fort Myers and performed my talent for the "Singles Club" at Lake Fairways retirement community. It was a very special appearance because I performed in conjunction with my little sister's a capella group from Fort Myers High School, which also happens to be my alma mater! What a talented bunch!

The next morning I had an interview on our local WINK TV affiliate. I glad to be back, but couldn't believe it had been six months since I was interviewed as the "new" Miss Florida!

After WINK I headed over to my favorite radio station, WAYFM! They have been closely following my journey as Miss Florida and I was glad to do another interview. It's always great to see Jeff and Steve and have the oportunity to talk about how God working in my life through this experience. Thanks guys!

Playing Catch-Up!

Greetings!

Obviously it has been far too long since I've written! Sorry about that. I've been taking so many pictures I can't seem to keep up! Allow me to share some of the highlights of the past month...

On November 22nd I traveled to my hometown of Fort Myers and partnered with Bobbi Brown Cosmetics for an event at a local Saks Fifth Avenue. I was greeted with warm smiles and open arms as I was escorted into the "spa" to get my make-up done. I then signed autographs as customers had the opportunity to get their make-up done at the various stations the Bobbi Brown artists had set up. I saw a lot of people that I knew, which was a pleasant surprise! This beauty-licious appearance ended with a very generous gift bag full of all sorts of Bobbi Brown products. Special thanks to Jackie Lopez, Andrea, and all of the beautiful Bobbi Brown ladies!

On the following Monday I accompanied my dear friend and mentor, Andrea Stephens, to the Lee County Department of Juvenile Justice...aka the Juvenile Jail. Once inside we met with 11 girls who were currently incarcerated. I spoke about how we all tend to wear "masks" from time to time, especially when we feel insecure about who we are. I gave the girls some tips to identifying and uncovering their masks and they really responded! It was a neat experience and I feel truly blessed to have been able to interact with the girls.

That evening I went to Andrea's youth group and gave my testimony to a small and attentive audience. Some of the students performed a skit that was absolutely hilarious! We all had a wonderful time!

While I was home for Thanksgiving I was interviewed by our local Christian radio station - WAY FM. We talked about my journey as Miss Florida and highlighted the upcoming "Poinsettias and the Princess" event at my church. Jeff and Steve were so much fun and truly made me feel like a celebrity!

After Thanksgiving mom and I hopped on a plane to NYC! While we were there I had three sessions with Shea to fine tune my dance. During one of our rehearsals the subject of getting "LaDuca" character heels came up...and it pretty much became necessary for me to get them. (Now you must realize that these are genuine Italian leather and what everyone on Broadway wears - the best!!) So...we called Mary and she agreed that they could be my birthday present from the Board! I can't even tell you how excited I was!!! Immediately after rehearsal we went to LaDuca and (after about 45 minutes of making sure I had the perfect fit) bought the beauties!!

We returned from NYC via the Tampa airport and met my dad, sister, uncle, cousin, grandma, and host family for dinner to celebrate my birthday!! (It wasn't my actual birthday, but close enough!) We had a delicious dinner at an authentic Italian restaurant and I was really blessed to spend some quality time with my fam.

On Saturday, December 6th, (my real b-day) two of my Sunshine Princesses, Shelby and Madison, came over to St. Pete and we were in the Santa Parade together. It was an absolutely gorgeous day and we got to ride in a BMW convertible! The girls looked beautiful in their red dresses, but I think they got tired of waving! :) It's tough work being a princess!

After the parade we had a delicious lunch at Panera (one of my favorite places!) with Bill and Kim Doniel. Then the girls, Dawn (Madison's mom), and I spent the afternoon at the park, which overlooks the Bay. It couldn't have been more perfect! That evening I had dinner with my host family and I opened gifts during halftime of the Florida/Alabama game (which was quite a privilege!). My host mom had silly birthday hats and had even shown up at the parade with a huge sign and noise-makers! They made the whole day really special.

Days go by...

Greetings!

The past few weeks have been very busy and this past week was no different! Last Thursday I traveled to my school, Palm Beach Atlantic University, to sing the National Anthem at American Free Enterprise Day. I had such a wonderful time. It was so much fun to be back on campus and feel the amazing support from administrators, professors, and classmates. I was able to see a lot of my friends who I have been missing terribly! It was so refreshing to spend time with people who really know me as Sierra and accompanied me on the journey to Miss Florida. It was also fun to feel like a college kid again! Although I've only been absent for a matter of months, it feels like forever since I was a student!

On my way to West Palm I was able to stop and meet up with two of my Princesses at the Wellington Mall. It was so nice to see their beautiful, smiling faces and spend some quality time with them. They showed me their new sashes that Shelby's grandmother made. They are adorable and compliment my sash very nicely! I can't wait to wear them together!

On Saturday I traveled to New Smyrna Beach for the "Boyland" event at First Baptist Church of New Smyrna. I teamed up with Andrea Stephens for the third time and spoke to around 200 middle and high school girls about how to celebrate being "single"! I refered to our single years as a "gift" and encouraged them to allow God to lead their love lives and make sure they take advantage of their years of singleness by pursuing their unique passions and goals.

I used the fact that I am "Miss" Florida as an example of the neat way God has been able to use me while I wait for the guy He has for me.

In addition to my talk, Andrea spoke on the differences between guys and girls, gave dating tips, and taught the girls about self-respect and purity. To conclude the conference the beautiful and talented Jeni Varnadeau, a recording artist from Nashville, performed a concert. The girls really responded...after all, what girl doesn't like talking about guys?

Did I mention my mom and little sis came? We had some great girl time together!

The following day I drove to Orlando to meet up with Mary and go to Becky Bangert's house to discuss some changes on my talent costume. It was great to see Becky and it didn't take us long to work out the kinks! Then Mary and I checked into a hotel downtown and met up with David Gilbert and some of his co-workers for dinner at Houston's. I really enjoyed spending time with David and meeting his lovely girl friends.

The next day we met Chris at Copperhead for a hair cut/color. It was about time! It is always great to see Chris and his new wife, Jen. We had a wonderful time and my hair turned out magnificent as always! Then it was off to Deanna Meredith's for a photo shoot. We borrowed some dresses from Regalia and had a ball! Leslie Ann did my hair and make-up and I really liked it. I can't wait to see the proofs!

That evening I dropped Mary off at the Tampa airport and I headed home to St. Pete. I am so thankful for my host family and how wonderful it has been to live in their home. Tuesday was an "off" day, which basically means no official appearances, but let's face it...no day is an "off"day! I always have plenty to do: work out, practice my dance, tan, keep up with my email, and tie up any loose ends that have accumulated. I am growing so much as I continue to absorb all that it means to be Miss Florida.

On Wednesday afternoon I participated in the Great American Teach-In, a county-wide event where professionals from all sorts of careers visit public schools and share about their job/hobby. I went to John Hopkins Middle School and told them about the Miss America Organization and what the job of Miss Florida entails. Part of me thinks it went over their heads (especially the boys!), but I did notice a lot of girls who were really listening and I incorporated some fun activities to help the students stay engaged. I showed a slideshow of pictures of various appearances, used volunteers to simulate the On-Stage Question competition, and sang a song to demonstrate the Talent competition.

My visit to JHMS was a clear confirmation of my passion for middle schoolers. I was so excited just to be there and have the opportunity to interact with the students. It is obvious that a lot of them hide behind very thick walls, but watching even the tiniest crack form makes it all worth the while. :)

As we move into the Holiday season I look forward to more appearances and continued preparation for January. I am going to Miss America! I can hardly stand the anticipation, but am savoring every moment because I know it is once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Greetings!

It's Tuesday night and Mary and I just finished looking over my swimsuit options for Miss America! One step closer to January...!

Last Wednesday night Mary, Lynne Dalton, and I spent the evening at an event for "Visit St. Pete/Clearwater" where they distributed latest travel magazine with my picture on the cover! They used a picture from the photo shoot on Caledesi Island in August and placed really neat graphics of area landmarks inside the lenses of my sunglasses, like a reflection. It was fun to see the finished product and have the opportunity to sign the magazines for the guests!

Immediately after the event Mary and I headed to the Tampa airport to catch a flight to Miami because I had to be at my first Right Decisions, Right Now school at 9am on Thursday morning! Although we didn't get home until almost midnight, I was really thankful we didn't have to drive! On Thursday morning we went to Hammocks Middle School where I ended up presenting to two groups of about 200 students each. What a thrill! I really enjoyed the opportunity to speak on a subject that I am passionate about and to an age group that I really have a heart for. At this school I had the chance to interact with some of the students in between presentations and grew especially fond of a group of girls from the dance department. I was even able to go to their class and they performed for me! The highlight of this school was getting to talk about the promise ring I wear on my ring finger to symbolize my commitment to save sex until marriage. (Some of the girls were wondering why I was wearing a ring on that finger when they learned that I don't have a boyfriend!) I saw some surprised reactions, but then a round of applause! Praise God!

On Friday night I attended the Pineapple Gala hospital fundraiser in Homestead. I was accompanied by Ann Marie Griffin and her friend Terri. Miss Homestead, Janae DeLeon, was there as well and sang three beautiful songs! It was fun to see her and enjoy her talent. My job was to model a necklace from Mayors Jewelers that was being raffled off as a fundraiser. It was over 1k in diamonds, set in 18k white gold, valued at $4900! It was beautiful and definitely the most expensive thing I've ever worn! At the end of the night I had to give it up, but I helped raise $10,000 for Homestead Hospital through the selling of the raffle tickets!

On Monday I was back on the RDRN trail as Mary and I headed to Ammons Middle School. I was greeted with a warm welcome and proceeded to the cafeteria to set up for my presentation. The schedule at this school was a little bit tighter, so I didn't have as much time to chat casually with the students, but a few of them came up to thank me at the end. That really meant a lot because I knew that I reached at least a few students!

Overall I feel like my first two schools were a success! I always find it interesting to watch how the students react to different parts of my message, but I think my personal stories make the biggest impression by far. I am so thankful for the opportunity to use my experiences to teach and inspire youth to recognize their value and do the right thing.

Happy November!

It is the 'eve' of the most anticipated day in America. I'm excited to be a part of this election and am proud to say that I voted for the first time! As the candidates have been busy traveling, so have I. The past couple of weeks have been filled with some really neat appearances that I am happy to share with you!

On October 23 I attended the "Hollywood Welcomes the Stars" event in Hollywood, FL. It was a fundraiser for the Boys and Girls Clubs in Broward County hosted by Wayne and Marti Huizenga. What a fun party! I was truly honored to attended such a prestigious event and be in the great company of such celebrities as Channing Crowder (Miami Dolphins linebacker), Jerry Mathers (Leave It To Beaver), Tina Louise ("Ginger" from Gilligan's Island), and Lesley Visser (Renowned female sportscaster). The highlight of the night was meeting and dancing on stage with former Monkee, Davy Jones! It was inspiring to see so many "big names" who care about the youth in our country and offer very generous support. I enjoyed learning about the Boys and Girls Club and how perfectly it ties into my personal platform!

After my trip to Hollywood it was back to the West Coast for the "Doorways" Scholarship Celebration in St. Petersburg. It was exciting to be a part of an event that awarded 144 6th grade students with "Florida Pre-paid" scholarships to attend a four-year university upon graduation from high school. I had the opportunity to address the students, parents, and Pinellas County school faculty and sing "I Have A Dream" from Mamma Mia.

My next stop was at Summit Christian School in my hometown of Fort Myers. I was invited to speak to a group of young girls at the kick-off of their new group G.E.M.S. (Girls Everywhere Meeting their Savior). What a special event! I was told that the girls were very excited that Miss Florida was coming and it was apparent when they arrived - some were super shy and others marched right up to greet me! They were so precious and were very attentive as I shared how they, too, are Princesses because they are daughters of the King. I was surprised to receive a beautiful frame and two bouquets of flowers at the end of the evening - one was real and the other consisted of homemade flowers from the girls! As I said goodbye to their beautiful faces I was truly reminded of how priceless this experience and this position really is.

After my visit to Fort Myers I returned to St. Pete and attended an exciting rally for the Rays! The Bay area is SO proud of the team and it was a great opportunity to celebrate their success. I must admit I was a little 'star-struck' to meet some of the players like Carlos Pena and the team manager and football great, Joe Maddon! They were so down-to-earth and very gracious to all of the fans who came out to show their support. We are all looking forward to next year! Go Rays!

And that brings me to today! I spent this absolutely beautiful day at the Red Cross Golf Scramble at the Renaissance Vinoy Golf Club. I assisted with the Putting Contest and soaked up some Florida sunshine! I had a wonderful time meeting the golfers and helping raise money for the Tampa Bay Chapter of the Red Cross. They are called upon DAILY to provide relief to the citizens in the Bay area and are hard at work to ensure they fulfill that calling.

This week I start my Right Decision, Right Now tour. This 20-school tour will educate middle school students about making healthy choices in regards to peer pressure and tobacco use. I can't wait to meet students from all over the state!

The Big Apple!

Hi there!

This post is long over due, but I must share my incredible trip to New York City! Exactly one week after I returned from LA, Mary and I hopped on a plane to NYC and arrived just in time for my first private lesson with Shea. With the new 90 second time limit for Miss America, my dance had to be shortened about 20 seconds. We also had to have a completely original recording made for TV purposes. Between Lea Delaria's (played the role on Broadway) interpretation of the song and Shea's amazing eye for choreography, we came up with some really neat changes and I feel really good about the dance!

Right after my first lesson with Shea, Mary and I quickly got ready to go see Legally Blonde, The Musical! It was so fun! And of course we were especially excited because Kate Shindle, Miss America 1998, played Vivienne Kensington! We met her at the Stage Door after the show and she gave us a tour of the Palace Theatre, including her dressing room! She also gave me a Legally Blonde poster signed by the entire cast! It was such a great night and reminded me of why I love Theatre so much!

When we left the Theatre Mary and I decided to get something to eat at a little Irish pub around the corner where they were airing the Rays/Red Sox game. We had some delicious soup and watched the game, rooting for the Rays! (Unfortunately they lost...but then won to qualify for the World Series!! Go Rays!)

The next morning we woke up and geared up for a day of shopping! I followed Mary's lead as she navigated through big department stores and fun little shops. And what's a shopping trip in NYC without a stop on Canal Street? Well, it was my first time going down there and it was quite an experience! There were so many people and so much stuff, I didn't even know where to begin! Before long it was time to get back to midtown for one last session with Shea.

On our final day in the City we had brunch with Shauna Pender, Miss Florida 2003, along with her boyfriend, her sister, and her sister's fiance. We had a wonderful time and it was so nice to see Shauna! The quality of her character and her heart for others shined so brightly as we enjoyed our brunch together.

Mary and I returned to Miami just in time to watch the Rays qualify for the World Series! It was so exciting! Since our return I have been busy with appearances, which I will share with you in my next entry!

Hello everyone!

I have returned to the Sunshine State having survived my first Reality TV experience!

The night before I left we celebrated with dinner at"Two Chefs"! I had my first espresso hoping that it would help me stay awake to finish packing! Franz, the Sullivan's resident waiter, posed for the picture. :)

Although I cannot say much about the content of the show, I can say that I have faith that it will be a series you won't want to miss! The production company was fabulous and commented that we "pageant girls" were not what they expected. Imagine that! They treated us with respect and admiration. MAO was alert 24/7 making sure that we were well taken care of and it was a great chance to spend some time the MAO staff. I had a wonderful time getting to know the other contestants and I think you will be quite impressed in January!

One of my first duties upon my return was attending the MFO Franchise Meeting in St. Petersburg. It was wonderful to see the entire Miss Florida Board as well as many Local ED's. We are all very excited to welcome several NEW local franchises to the Miss Florida family!! Be sure to check if there is a new local in your area!

Hello friends!

What a wonderful weekend I had at Shands Hospital in Gainesville. On Friday I participated in the last day of the Children's Miracle Network Radiothon and was able to visit some of the children. I learned a lot about CMN and its impact on the lives of children and families all over the state. Seeing the personal testimonies made me very proud of the partnership between MAO and CMN. In total, the Radiothon raised over $240,000!!

On Sunday me, Courtney, and six local "Miss" titleholders were back at Shands for the CMN Art Day. It was so nice to see my fellow Miss Florida sisters! We mingled with the children and helped them paint their blues away! Once again, it was a great opportunity to interact with the children and families on a personal level. The art will be auctioned off on October 30th as another fundraiser for CMN. What a neat idea! I painted the "sun" on a big wooden puzzle and then autographed the back in hopes to attract a higher bidder!

On Monday night I met Mary in St. Petersburg for the 2009 Miss America Contestant Placement Lottery. I wasn't really nervous about it until "Florida" was the 42nd state called!! That means that I was the 42nd contestant to pick my group (order of competition) and placement within that group. Needless to say, most of the spots that I had picked out as favorites were taken by then. I ended up sticking with my first choice for group which is Sigma (the other two are Mu and Alpha) and then chose spot #3. Therefore I will have Interview on Tuesday morning, Swimsuit/Evening Wear Tuesday night, Talent on Wednesday night, and On-stage Question on Thursday night. Now we're just one step closer to January!

Yesterday I had an interview on the Studio 10 Morning Show in St. Pete. It was my first "Talk Show" experience and it was a lot of fun! I was accompanied by Bill and Kim Doniel who then took me to Gold's Gym to take pictures with the owners and thank them for their sponsorship. Next we went to Pepin for lunch - a delicious authentic Spanish restaurant! It was a busy morning, but I wouldn't have it any other way!

As of tonight, L.A. is less than two weeks away! I'm excited and know I'm in for quite an adventure! I wish I could tell you more, but I don't even know where we're staying when we get there! Everything is going to be a surprise...you'll just have to tune in in January!
