Dwelling of Duels, hosted by VGMix is a community wide compo where the main instrument must be played live. This attracts a variety of talent and often produces amazing results. Every month, a theme is chosen which must be followed. Participants have one month to complete their tracks, songs are voted for on the last day of every month.

This month is Ninja Gaiden month part deux. This includes all Ninja Gaiden games: the NES trilogy, the arcade/other system versions, and the new/Sigma games. Incoming injury/starla album?

I've decided to finally release an album. Now it's not done yet, but I have suffered long enough from the it's-not-done-itis. I figure I can grab between 10 and 16 tracks, mostly from my recent compos, and others from songs that have never been released.

I need you guys to bug me and make sure that I don't give up on this, and that I don't dawdle on other things too much. Since most of the composing part is complete and all that is left is rerecording and finishing up the backing tracks, it is certainly possible to see something completed come Magfest. Thank you for all your continued support!

Green Jester Needs Space Badly

So, ladies and gents, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but this is an issue that needs to be addressed.

As I found out from Richter a week or so ago, OverLooked ReMiX has become too large for him to host any longer. He's pretty much paying out of his own pocket too, as we aren't a large enough site to garner a consistent traffic flow, and I'm pretty sure the revenue off of ads is miniscule at best.

Thus, I don't know how much longer we'll be around. The only option Richter and I could think of is to release songs on YouTube, and then host a torrent of all of the songs for people who want individual copies of them. Richter did also move the songs to another hosting, but that's only saved them; we can't post new remixes, and we have at least one new site project to release that can't be hosted on the server. This is why we haven't had a new remix in about a month.

If anyone would like to lend a hand with anything (even if it comes to torrenting, just having some seeds), it would be greatly appreciated. Obviously I'm not looking for someone to just take and host the site, but even some alternative options than what Richter and myself have thought of would help us. Although if you would consider hosting, contact Richter at richtaur at gmail dot com, and/or myself at xenonodyssey at hotmail dot com.

OverClocked ReMix Increases Maximum File Size Limit to 8MB

Effective immediately, the judges panel has voted to raise the maximum submission size to 8MiB, or 8,388,608 bytes.

The max bitrate REMAINS 192Kbps; if you want to visit my house and prove you can pass a blind test differentiating between 192Kbps and 256Kbps, be my guest. If you win, the bitrate will be raised. If you lose, you owe OC ReMix $300 for my time

This decision was reached by vote of the judges panel on a thread I posted; our mirrors are handling MP3 bandwidth admirably and, combined with torrents, have proven that this increase should be sustainable, so I posed the question and the judges responded.
If you already have a piece queued up you think would benefit from a higher quality encode, please get in touch with a judge, BUT please note that any such changes may delay the evaluation of your track. I'd recommend against it unless it's a 6-7 minute track where the encode really brutalized things.
As to the logical follow up question of "OMFG WHY NOT 10MB?! OR EVEN... 100MB!!!?", well, to be honest 6MiB has been serving us quite well for a long time. There are logistics involved at OCR that are fairly unique, and specifically when you factor in the (necessarily) manual evaluation of both arrangement and production PLUS the general deterrence towards mega-medleys, etc., we feel it makes a lot of sense.
We are considering going back and soliciting higher quality encodes of mixes ALREADY posted, but have not formalized any plans. Please don't ask to update any existing tracks you may have had posted on the site, as we won't do it - in other words, don't call us, we'll call you.

That's it, pretty much. While I'm sure someone can manage to put a negative spin on this by complaining that it took us too long, that it should be raised higher still, or that Larry smells (only one of which is true), I see it as a "good thing" that represents our steady, stable, persistent improvement of the site over time.

You might have heard, but OCReMixer bLiNd's wife has started a serious shake down for her Wild ARMs ReMix project tentatively named: Overture of the Vigilante Wild. I had over-heard via Facebook that she had manage to net AmIEvil, a name I hadn't seen mention in QUITE some time, and today while browsing the Artists' Updates tab, I saw they she has managed to get McVaffe on board as well!
While most people are already excited about the upcoming DKC2 Project, the Wild ARMs project is quickly ramping up to be just as exciting.

VGM Spotlight � Game rips worth your time

Quite a few games never got a soundtrack release but have been brought to the mighty internet in form of game rips, either from the ROM or direct audio recordings. Here I’m gonna mention a few that’s worth looking into. From Software’s extremely overlooked Lost Kingdoms II (known as Rune II in Japan) has some quirky music.

From Software head composer Kota Hoshino is joined by From Software regular Yuji Kanda and Takeshi Yanagawa of Culdcept fame for the soundtrack, never released in stores, and it certainly has it’s moments. A strange blend of ethnic, electronica and classic RPG music that makes up for the lack of sample quality with unique compositions. Highlights include Battle, Gromtull Desert and Kendarie Fortress. A must if you’ve played the game.
Whoopee Camp’s PS1 cult hit Ore! Tomba also has some fantastic music. Happy-go-lucky music based mainly around mallet-type sounds and percussion with really strong melodies. This soundtrack went great with the crazy art style of Ore! Tomba, the pink-haired little boy battling against evil pigs, solving mysteries and helping people. Highlights include Dwarf Forest, Village of all Beginnings and Phoenix Mountain. Harumi Fujita (Pulstar, Blazing Star) and Nao Hatsutani really made a memorable soundtrack and it’s a shame it goes unreleased. Since Ore! Tombe (or Tomba! or Tombi! as it’s also known) is such a rare game many people will miss out on this so hunt down that game rip NOW!

Future Tactics: the Uprising might have been a bad game, I don’t know, but goddamn the music is groovy. Tim Follin, one of the best NES/SNES composers out there, finally got his hands on some real samples and made some fantastic tunes. The soundtrack is a groovy, funk-inspired blend of jazz flute infested jam sessions, extremely atmospheric semi-ambient pieces, folkmusic and balls-to-the-wall rock. The instruments sound authentic, the riffs are strong and Follin really showed why he was one of the greats (he’s now retired from game music). Find it, enjoy it and beg to a god of your choice that Tim Follin gets back into game music.

Long story short, there’s a LOT of good VGM out there that never got a soundtrack release. That doesn’t mean all hope is lost, game rips is fan effort at it’s best and will give you hours of listening pleasure. It’s probably not legal in SOME way but damnit, I fail to see anyhting wrong with it if the game never got a soundtrack release. Anyway, if you have any personal favorites be sure to let me know and I’ll check them out.

Freshly Baked ReMixer Challenge Listening Party

This year's Freshly Baked ReMixer challenge, and we're holding a listening party tomorrow at 6PM PST/ 9PM EST so everyone can have a chance to listen to the songs everyone has been working on over the past 2 months. The listening party will be held in #thasauce on irc.enterthegame.com.

Way back in 2002 a forum user name "I Like Cookies!" (now just Jeff), ran a 1-shot competition called the Freshly Baked ReMixer challenge. In the thread artists signed up and were assigned challenges posted by other forum users. This is how artists like myself, Suzumebachi, and GLL all got our starts. There were also some other impressive tracks by Disco Dan and a few others.

Some time later the same user did the Second Annual FBRC which, while not as popular as the first one, still saw some solid success.

Since the competition has long been forgotten by most, and seeing all the talent that's on OCReMix today, I think it's time we try a revival.

The idea was born this time last year, when we embarked on the first Megatainment tour - basically they kept hassling us about not planning to do the MM1 soundtrack, so we said "write and record all the music and we'll do vocals..." and that's exactly what happened!

We're really excited about how this turned out - Entertainment System brings a different, heavier sound than what we play, so it was a fun challenge to come up with melodies and lyrics! Story-wise, this fits in as a nice prequel to Get Equipped.

Nekofrog presents: The Agony of Man ALBUM PREVIEW

My debut album is nearing completion, but for a few reasons that cannot be revealed here, it will be some months before it finally sees an official release. Until then, I figured I'd throw up a preview of what's to come. This preview consists of two fully completed (length-wise) songs, and one abbreviated song.

Entitled "The Agony of Man", this album features a trilogy of songs depicting the birth, life, and death of a man, detailing the major events that define his tragic life. It also spans various different genres of metal, including thrash metal, progressive metal, death metal, melo-death, and many others.

Track 1: This song is entitled "Overdose", and is unrelated to the trilogy. Some of the other musicians that I've shown the project to have described this song as progressive/melodic death metal, however it lacks any type of vocals. So if you're one of those types who likes the guitar of melodic or progressive death metal but can't get past the cookie monster vocals, this is probably right up your ally.

Track 2: This song is entitled "The Funeral", and is the middle part of the aforementioned trilogy. It details the death and laying to rest of the man's wife, and his regret at having ever met her and inadvertently causing her death. EMO FAGGOT. Vocals (yes, this song has vocals) were recorded by DrumUltima of, derp, OCR fame.

Track 3: This song is entitled "Descent", and is unrelated to the trilogy. This song takes elements from thrash metal more than anything, with some fast riffing near the fadeout. This track is going to be a doozy when the full thing is unleashed :)

In the coming months, a few more tunes might be "leaked" up until the album's final release. Thanks for listening, I'd appreciate some comments if you enjoyed it, or otherwise.

Yes, tomorrow night, at precisely 10pm, Radio ThaSauce Live makes it return after six week hiatus due to moving, adjustments, and Otakon! I'll be bringing the phat beats, so strap yourself in, and hang on tight!

A lot has happened since the last time I did the show, and hopefully I'll be able to cover it all, but we'll see. It features music by Schaffer the Darklord, performance clips from The Grammar Club, The Megas, MCs Frontalot and Lars, and some great interview snippets with the fans, performers and organizers. Bad Dudes - Chronotorious album available for preview and pre-order

Watch out! The Bad Dudes are back! And badder than ever! No that's ridiculous, they are already the baddest dudes. Anyway, they have very recently announced that their upcoming tribute to the amazing classic Chrono Trigger, awesomely titles Chronotorious is available for pre-order.

Not only that, but if you click on "albums/eps" and then click on the Chronotorious album, then hit tracks, you can preview all the songs from the album! But you can only get five of those tracks on the official pressed album release. Danimal cannon of the Bad Dudes and Armcannon fame personally describes these songs as "bad-fucking-ass" and you don't argue with a bad dude who's last name is Cannon.

Also if you pre-order the album now, the album will only cost you $10, this will rise to $12 come August 18th, not to mention that the album also comes with a sweet poster. Oh, and did I mention they are only making 1000 albums! So don't drag your feet, I already pre-ordered my copy, so realistically there are only 999 left at most!

We're probably going to be referring to this as "Two" or "Pizzor" for the sake of brevity.

In February of this year, we entered Watchmen Studios for a few weeks to churn out this slice of delicious terror and we're quite pleased with the results.   Watchmen Studios recently put out the newest (and previous) Psyopus record, along with the new Brutal Truth.   With engineer Doug White at the helm we cranked out 11 new Armcannon glory anthems to celebrate our roots.

I happened to come across this video through the Zelda Universe. This is (what I think) a fantastic version of Lost Woods/Saria's Song from the Ocarina of Time. For the musically minded the video also contains what bars are being played, which is a nice addition for those concerned. If you have fond memories of OoT please have a look at this, it sounds fantastic and you won't regret it.

In the last few days the writer of these has done a few versions of the Song of Storms which are very much worth a look as well.

Weezer - The 8 bit Album compilation release

For most folks growing up with the NES, SNES, gameboy, and other classic consoles of the current chiptune era, another staple in our lives was good old 90's rock. One such band was the ever amazing and often nerdy Weezer. In this vein, Pterodactyl Squad has organized, and finally released Weezer - The 8 bit Album compilation...

...which as the title states, is an album "created using original videogame hardware running home-brew software, and vary radically in style, from minimal 'one man and his Game Boy' compositions to 8-bit inspired full band performances.". The album is 14 covers by no less than the finest in chiptune music today.
I along with many others have been really looking forward to this tribute album, and very excited to have it released. The album is great even if you aren't familiar with every Weezer song on the album, or if you don't recognize the chippy artists paying tribute to them! Nerdapalooza reminded me of something that I've wanted to do for a long time, but have never been able to do much of: PROMOTE. We got 1 run of shirts made, I got some cheap flyers and DVD cases to make stuff happen, but the funds just weren't there to make any serious promotion.

So this year, if at all possible, I want to be as ready for MAGFest as possible, and while adsense really isn't going to get us all the way where we want to be, it'll certainly help a bit. BUT WHAT'S IN IT FOR YOU?

And so it is, that after many months of arranging music and watching professional Starcraft, we've now ended up with about two releases worth of songs. We would probably hemorrhage with pure glory if we tried to just record them all at once, so we're going to split this batch into two albums.

The first one will be all of the tv, cartoon and movie themes that we grew up with, smelted into shimmering metal. The Pokemon theme song is on this one as some of you know, along with This is Halloween from The Nightmare before Christmas (one of several Danny Elfman songs we're doing on this one, a favorite composer for sure), The Flintstones, The Real Adventures of Johnny Quest (if you haven't heard that one look it up, it's awesome), and a song that for the moment I'm calling In the Hall of Inspector Gadget. Also, we have this psychotic arrangement of Under the Sea from The Little Mermaid with 220bpm shredding and steel drums that will make you pass out from laughing and headbanging at the same time. In the next few weeks we'll reveal some more about it as we get started with the recording. As to the amount of songs, I honestly don't know yet how many we want to put on this release. It could be an EP, it could be an album, only time will tell.

And the second one is back to video game music! We've got most of the core material done for that one as well, so we'll have plenty of time to kick it around and refine it. I'll save revealing those tracks for later, but I recently did an arrangement of Snake Man from Mega Man 3 that I can't wait to hear live, should it make the cut. I'd love to have the first one come out later this year, and the second one in 2010, but we'll see how that works out with touring etc.

We just got all of our new gear together and we'll be setting it up and getting our tones starting this weekend. Our drum and bass sounds are already way better than Metal Kombat, and Saturday the never ending quest for the perfect recorded guitar tone begins anew.

I can't really generalize on the sound for this album, but there are definitely more dark moments than Metal Kombat, and the gleeful moments of cheer are more intense and ecstatic. It is also heavier and shreddyer, but every band says that. So don't take our word for it now, you see when the time comes.

This is apparently kind of old, but I hadn't heard of it until today. I came across this today when one friend of mine posted it on another friend's Facebook wall. The album, as you could probably guess, is an collection of mash-ups of rap artists like Aesop Rock, Busta Rhymes, and MF DOOM with the soundtrack from Ocarina of Time.
You can stream the whole album from here, and you can also download the whole thing. When you click to download, you're prompted to make an optional donation (you can choose to donate $0) to download higher quality files (320kbps CBR MP3, FLAC, AAC, OGG, etc., etc.) or download a free version for 128kbps CBR.

During the summer, AmigaRemix.com will be completely reworked and will be based on a new engine instead of the current one. This gives the obvious opportunity to not only change the background system, but also the frontend into something new and fresh. Because I'm a coder and no designer, I'd like some help in making it look kickass as well as I'll make it have a proper engine to run it on.

What is needed is a nice and clean design, focusing on the Amiga in a retro or futuristic way. The site will still be quite 'shallow' since it'll only be a listing of what tracks are available - apart from the submission system - which means it shouldn't be too hard to do this. I'm very fluent in CSS + XHTML, so that won't give any fuzz, but if any of you feel up for helping out with the new design, please contact me here or via the contact form on the site itself.

There really are no guidelines other than the above mentioned so the design can pretty much be in any way you create it. Just think of it as a big listing of remixes + some additional links and info and it'll be just fine. Also, make sure it's doable without TOO much graphics involved, since we want it to be lightweight as well as good looking.

...and yes, I plan to make the site skinnable (which it actually is right now as well, but I don't use it) so more than one design can 'win' this.

When I get hold of something good as a prize, I'll make sure to give that to the winning entry.

I'm not that comfortable with shameless plugs, but I told people who have asked me through the years that as soon as I was able to put together a new site of my new and old work, that I would do so. And so I have, so here it is:

So far the site contains the vast majority of my work, much of it which was created in the late '90s and early 2000's when I joined the site and began submitting remixes. It's no coincidence that my discovery of Overclocked led to what was one of my greatest periods of regular output.

The fact that I owed such a huge debt of gratitude to OCRemix and to its community members through the years for supporting, inspiring, and shaping the way I developed my sound led me to post about the site here. I searched for all of the old original remix WAVs I could find, and uploaded them in higher bitrates than I originally submitted here. As well, there are some remixes there that either didn't fit the guidelines of OCR, or ones I never quite felt polished enough to submit.

For any Youtube fans, I spent over a week creating original game captures and editing videos to some of my remixes, which to me increases the nostalgia factor tenfold. It was a ton of work but it was a great experience playing the games again and seeing Sonic snowboard down a mountain, or Mario chase a giant eel. It reminded me so much of why I loved games and game music in the first place. Link is below:

Finally, I wanted to share part of a new project I'm working on with a close friend and artist. It may somewhat be considered an original album, but the presentation will be revealed once we figure out how we will put everything together. Short version: It's a personal project of original music based on the inspiration of the amazing composers who originally got me into game music composing and remixing. It's simple, sweet, and hopefully will remind listeners of the good old days of Super NES and PS1 RPGs from which I've drawn so much inspiration through the years. A little about the kits...

---
"Superfreak" (Milkboy Studios, Ardmore, PA) - As the name suggests, most of this 60s Ludwig 'Silver Comet' kit is rumored to have originally belonged to a certain funk music icon. The drums were recorded using high-end ribbon mics into an all-analog signal path, most notably a 70s Neve console with a few busted channels and lots of character. Outboard processors in the chain included gear by Empirical Labs, Tube-Tech, and Anthony DeMaria Labs. The saturation present on the higher velocities of some of the sounds, like the kick and snare, came solely from high gain running through all the tubes; no overdrive, distortion, or compressor saturation was applied!

"Tape" (The Audio Lab, Milville, NJ) - This one was a real hybrid, the centerpiece being a 30s Ludwig Pioneer Black Beauty snare. The kicks and toms were Tamburo original series, along with an extra 22" Tama kick. Our hats, cymbals and rides were a mishmash of faded, junked up old metal… just what we wanted. Everything in the kit was recorded through an analog signal path then finally to an authentic, 24-track Otari tape machine before being dumped into Pro Tools. Mics used for this kit ranged in age and manufacturer. Various workhorse mics from EV, Sennheiser, Shure and Audix were used throughout, and to get the trashy, crunchy room sound, we used a trashy 70s General Electric cassette recorder mic along with an RCA SK-30.

"Herodotus" (Real Music Media, Minneapolis, MN)) - John Gump (a.k.a. KVRAudio member Herodotus) recorded this drum set, which is the same make and model as Cream drummer Ginger Baker's drums! Mics used were a pair of Neumann KM-184s and Sennheiser 441s plus a Royer R-121. Radio ThaSauce Live -- On Hiatus for Now

It's with regret that I must announce that Radio ThaSauce Live is on hiatus for the next two to three weeks. I'm going through a huge phase in my life right now, I'm moving out of the house I've called home for the last 8 years of my life. Thus, I'm in the midst of packing up my belongings, throwing out what I don't need, and trying to get organized for this move. Therefore, I will not have much, if any time, to actually sit down and do the show. However, I do have some VERY exciting news for you!

When I return in mid to late June, my shows will be longer, though continuing on saturdays, they will be at least 4 hours long. I will also be looking for a few good co-hosts at that time. The next planned time off will be Otakon 2009 since I will be in attendance, and of course, at the OverClocked Remix Panel and of course JamSpace/Club Otaku.
What can you expect in June? Longer shows for one. A live video feed! Also, I'm planning on purchasing some DJing gear in the near future, so keep it locked to Radio ThaSauce Live, as I may very well be doing a live mix show at some point!

Thanks to everyone who's been listening in faithfully since the beginning. What's coming up promises to be fantastic!

OverClocked ReMix StarCraft Tournament

Ok guys! I was saying the other day on IRC that we should have a small-potatoes SC tournament, and even offered to donate 20 dollars for a prize (either cash or whatever you guys would deem appropriate)! I was hearing that there is already some interest (most notably Nekofrog, Tensei-san, and Battousai) and wanted to see if there were other folks who'd want to get in on something like this.

I was figuring that we could even record the replays with commentary if people were comfortable having other folks watch their games... even though I doubt many of us here are really "good enough" to warrant actually having a VOD, it'd be nice to see our own flaws and compare strats.

What do you guys think? You can message me on IRC or Steam (add me: https://steamcommunity.com/id/garianse) but please not here because I hardly ever check my messages or email.

Update May 22:
It seems most people want to have two tourneys, a 1v1 series and a 2v2 series pairing people by their skill. Each round of the tournament will be decided by a best of 3 matches. I'm thinking that we should maybe aim for a mid-to-late June date to begin playing, but I don't want that to be set in stone until we've got some more of the details hammered out. If you're wanting to "sign up," go ahead and make a post with the race you play and the name you'll be playing under. Check this post for future updates!

Nerdapalooza; Summer MAGFest? Well kinda...

Most people know by now that I've been a resident of Florida all my life, and that I moved to Orlando a few years ago to attend Full Sail University's Computer Animation Bachelors of Science Degree problem. Since I didn't have a car I lived pretty close to campus, and I got pretty familiar with the surrounding area in the Comic Shop down the street. It was through this comic shop that I got to meet one of my favorite musicians, as well as learned about Nerdapalooza where myf (aka Mythril Nazgul) would be performing just a few days later.

I planned to walk the 8 miles it'd take to get there if I couldn't find a ride, and luckily I did find a ride, because 8 miles is a lot longer than it seems on MapQuest. When I got there I was greeted by myf himself, along with DJ Snyder of the Grammar Club, who happened to be sitting with MC Frontalot and Schaffer the Darklord. Kind of intense stuff, really. Until then I'd only heard/seen MC Frontalot through Penny Arcade and G4, but now he's sitting in front of me. Inside I saw ytcracker going through songs on his laptop and I met artists like Random and Zealous1 and was completely blown away. I had no idea that Orlando was so rich with nerd culture (though I suppose I should) and I was told by quite a few people that it was getting bigger every day.

Well now Nerdapalooza 2009 is coming up, and it's bigger than ever. So big that mc chris has already been confirmed as a guest, as well as Beefy and Shael Riley of the Grammar Club in their first ever live performance. Suzu and starla are making serious attempts to come join the awesome, rumor has it AE might be making an appearance, and I've recently heard via twitter that OCR may be cooking something up as well. You can bet ThaSauce'll be out in full force, but what about you?

Nerdapalooza is the closest thing to a summer MAGFest we have going right now. A mid-year nerd gathering with more music than you can handle.

Weezer - The 8-bit Album announced

For fans of the band, or 8-bit music, or both, a tribute album to Weezer has just been announced, featuring many of the leading musicians of the 8-bit scene.

The compilation is set to be released on Pterodactyl Squad, and will feature contributions from 14 different artists, including Bit Shifter, Anamanaguchi, arcadecoma., I Fight Dragons, PDF Format, seal of quality and Videogame Orchestra.

Head on over to the official blog to view the artwork for the compilation, drawn by David Mauro and modelled on Weezer's iconic 'Blue Album' cover. You can also preview PDF Format's cover of You Won't Get With Me Tonight, which will be featured on the compilation.

Radio Free Gamer, the new podcast featuring free VGM, will start on 8bitx.com in June. Until then, please email radiofreegamer@gmail.com with free original VGM, covers, arrangements, remixes, or music related to video games. Stay tuned for more details!

8-Bit Extravaganza will host a new podcast dedicated to free video game music, be it original soundtracks, arrangements, remixes, or simply music related to video games. The goal of this show is to be a source for listeners to learn about the many and varied VGM artists.
To that end, sources of free VGM are needed! Please send links with free VGM as described above to radiofreegamer@gmail.com. As many sources as possible are needed, so please send what you have. If you are a VGM artist yourself and would like to be featured or interviewed on the show, please email us.
