None of that means a deal is imminent. No destination was named. Knecht remains the cleaner roster answer on most ledgers. But once an executive says “definitely interest” on the record through an insider, every Lakers preseason minute becomes audition tape for outsiders as much as for the coaching staff.

For Bronny, that is a strange kind of respect. The noise used to be about his last name. This latest wave is about whether his game has enough standalone value to fetch picks. For the Lakers, it is leverage and a headache at the same time.

According to MMA Fighting’s Damon Martin, the promoter feud escalated again after the Fury-Joshua deal locked in. Hearn has insisted White will have nothing to do with the fight. White has kept saying his people are running the Netflix production, the same way they did for Canelo-Crawford.

Hearn is not whispering about it. At a Saturday press conference he laughed off the idea that UFC would run the December show and said of White, “I think he’s completely cooked.” Hearn claimed White’s line about doing the TV production is prohibited in the contract, then said he almost felt bad before dropping a receipt video of White’s past comments anyway.

It got sharper from there. Hearn told IFL.tv he went to SELA, the Saudi-backed company funding the card, and that they confirmed White’s claim was “absolute bollocks” in writing. Hearn’s version: White cannot do what he is publicly claiming, and instead of admitting Hearn has him boxed in, White just keeps talking.

White, speaking at the UFC 332 post-fight press conference, did not back down. He said he will be in Wales, that Craig Borsari and his team are producing the show, and that he will promote it with “my little phone on the table” the same way he does every other broadcast he produces. “I’ll be there. I’m producing it. I’m promoting it. I’ll see you in Wales,” White said.

So the fight is not just Fury-Joshua anymore. It is a credibility war between the loudest promoter in combat sports and the Matchroom boss who says the paperwork already settled the argument.

If White shows up and his crew is actually running Netflix cameras, Hearn’s “cooked” line ages poorly in public. If SELA and the contract really freeze UFC out of production, White spent weeks advertising a role he cannot legally hold. Either outcome is gossip gold two months before the bell.

For now, Fury and Joshua are training for December. White and Hearn are training for press-conference warfare. And the rest of the fight world is keeping score on who blinks first.

Adam Schefter reported Sunday that Baker Mayfield’s dislocated right thumb is expected to sideline the Buccaneers quarterback anywhere from three to six weeks, depending on how quickly he can grip a football again. Todd Bowles had already framed three weeks as the minimum. Schefter’s sourcing makes clear the private fear inside Tampa Bay has stretched toward five or six.

Jiri Kulich punched the air, pounded the glass, and let the building know what the wait felt like. With 6:40 left Saturday night, the Sabres forward buried the go-ahead goal in a 4-3 comeback win over the Chicago Blackhawks in Buffalo’s home opener. It was his first regular-season goal in almost a calendar year.

Florida’s injury curse woke up early. The Panthers placed captain Aleksander Barkov on long-term injured reserve Saturday with a lower-body issue, only two games into his comeback from missing the entire 2025-26 season.

Barkov went down Thursday in San Jose during a 4-3 overtime loss to the Sharks. On a power play at 8:07 of the second period, he battled awkwardly for the puck in the right corner, got up, asked for the Zamboni doors, and tossed his gloves while walking off. That was enough for Florida to make the LTIR call. He must miss at least 10 games and 24 days. A doctor visit Monday will try to pin down how bad it really is.

The timing is brutal. Barkov, 31, sat out all of last season after tearing his MCL and ACL on the first day of training camp and having surgery the next day. He finally returned Tuesday in a 1-0 overtime win over Carolina, logging 20:32. Game two was the Sharks night. Then the stretcher-door walk. For a three-time Selke winner who captained Florida to back-to-back Cups in 2024 and 2025, two games of rust-busting was not the script anyone wanted.

Coach Paul Maurice tried to draw a hard line between this scare and last year’s nightmare. “We don’t even know the extent of it yet, so it doesn’t feel anything like last year,” Maurice said. “Last year, we were playing on a quarter tank of gas, and we had other guys that were going to leave our lineup in the next week after. So, this one, we’ve got good depth. Everybody’s going to make it.”

Depth is the buzzword. Lars Eller slides up to center Brady Tkachuk and Sam Reinhart on the top line, starting Sunday in Anaheim. Eller is not pretending to be Barkov. “No one’s going to be able replace Sasha Barkov, and I’m not trying to,” he said. “I’m just trying to play to my own identity and complement my linemates.”

Brad Marchand is still out after offseason lower-body surgery. Gustav Forsling missed Thursday with an upper-body issue and is a game-time decision Sunday. Florida recalled forward Sam Lafferty and defenseman Alexander Petrovic from AHL Charlotte on Saturday to fill the holes.

Barkov did get one bright chapter between the knee and this latest scare. He captained Finland to gold at the 2026 IIHF World Championship in Switzerland with 11 points in 10 games. Career-wise he sits at 782 points in 806 regular-season games plus 81 playoff points, numbers that make every LTIR day feel heavy.

Maurice keeps saying the room feels different than a year ago because the supporting cast is thicker. That may be true. It does not make watching the captain limp out of a corner battle any easier. Timeline unknown. Monday’s doctor visit first. Until then, Florida plays without its heartbeat.

Las Vegas got a bombshell on Saturday that had nothing to do with green-flag laps. Sheldon Creed, the guy currently sitting atop the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series standings, confirmed he is walking away from Haas Factory Team’s No. 00 after this season for a multi-year deal with Sam Hunt Racing.

The California native will drive the No. 26 Toyota starting in 2027. Dean Thompson, who has been in that SHR seat, flips the other way and heads to Haas as the organization expands to three cars. Crew chief Kris Bowen is staying put at Sam Hunt Racing for a fifth season, which means Creed inherits a pit box that already knows how the Toyota program works.

Here is the part that makes this feel like a soap opera more than a press release. Creed just turned 29. He has three wins this year, all of them in a breakout O’Reilly season after years of being the league’s most famous bridesmaid. He leads Justin Allgaier by about 11 points heading into Saturday night’s Focused Health 302 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. And he still said leaving Haas was not his first choice.

“I have zero complaints, and I wouldn’t say it was my first choice to move on,” Creed told reporters at the 1.5-mile track. “But unfortunately, business has to make sense and that overrules results and performance on track sometimes.”

That is driver-speak for the money and the long-term picture did not line up, even while the No. 00 group is winning races and leading the Chase. Haas issued a polite thank-you note and said 2027 driver announcements are still TBD. Sam Mayer is already gone from the No. 41 to JR Motorsports, so neither of Haas’s current O’Reilly drivers is coming back.

Creed’s resume tour has been loud. Richard Childress Racing, Joe Gibbs Racing, then Haas since 2025. Before that, a 2020 Truck Series championship and an ARCA title. He has chased Cup forever and still wants that call. But he also painted a Plan B that sounds a lot like settling into a real home.

“Looking down the road, obviously, haven’t gotten a Cup opportunity, and obviously, that’s still my end goal,” he said. “But if I don’t ever get that call, I felt like Sam’s is somewhere I can race for the next 15 years and make a good living and be able to raise my family.”

Sam Hunt called landing Creed “huge” and framed it as the next big step for a team that has grown the scrappy way since late 2019. SHR still has more driver and sponsor news coming for 2027. Creed, meanwhile, insists the championship chase with Haas comes first. Win the title in the No. 00, then start the next chapter in Toyota blue.

For a points leader with three wins and a Cup dream still on the whiteboard, packing up after Saturday’s announcement is a reminder that in NASCAR, the standings and the contracts do not always vote the same way.

Retirement did not stick. Kasey Kahne is coming back to race for wins again.

The Athletic’s Jordan Bianchi reported Friday night that Kahne, 46, is expected to sign with Spire Motorsports for a full-time NASCAR FedEx Freight Truck Series season in 2027. The deal is in progress and not official yet, which is racing speak for “the ink is close enough that people are already talking like it is done.”

Kahne’s Cup career ran 2004 through 2018 with 18 wins, including crown jewels that still show up in highlight packages whenever NASCAR needs nostalgia. He stepped away late in 2018 for health reasons tied to excessive dehydration on the longer Cup races. That was not a soft fade. It was an abrupt stop for a driver who still looked like he belonged in the conversation.

Spire and Chevrolet wanted a proven winner who can contend for race wins and a championship. Kahne’s Truck resume is short and loud: five wins in only six career Truck starts. That is the kind of efficiency that makes an organization stop shopping and start drafting the press release.

The health angle matters. Truck races are shorter than Cup. The report frames that as a real mitigator for the dehydration issues that ended his full-time Cup run. Nobody is pretending he is 28 again. They are saying the format fits the body he has now.

Spire already bought the Kyle Busch Motorsports Truck infrastructure in 2023. Pairing that shop with a hungry veteran who knows how to win on short notice is not a charity ride. It is a statement that Spire wants trophies, not just starts.

If the paperwork lands, Kahne walks out of retirement into a Chevrolet seat with a team built to chase. Fans who watched him dominate and then disappear get a second act. Rivals get a reminder that experience still sells in the Truck Series.

Deal not done. Expectation already is. That is how NASCAR gossip works on a Saturday.

Kahne was never a filler driver. When he was right, he won the races people remember. The NFL trade market is not roaring yet. Jonathan Jones of The Athletic just handed every general manager a Saturday watch list anyway.

Bleacher Report’s Mike Chiari flagged Jones’ latest report on Oct. 3, and the names are the kind of gossip fuel that keeps draft Twitter awake: Steelers linebacker Alex Highsmith, Commanders defensive tackle Daron Payne, Colts defensive tackle Grover Stewart, Giants linebacker Kayvon Thibodeaux, Browns wideout Jerry Jeudy, and Jaguars wideout Brian Thomas Jr.

Jones says the market is quiet for now. Quiet does not mean empty. The window already cracked open this week when Pittsburgh moved corner Joey Porter Jr. to Dallas. That deal is context, not the story. The story is who else might follow before the Nov. 10 deadline.

Thibodeaux is the name that makes New York fans twitch. He was the 2022 No. 5 overall pick and hits free agency after this season. The Giants already have Brian Burns (torn ACL, done for the year) and Abdul Carter on the edge. If there is no plan to re-sign Thibodeaux, shopping him before November starts looking like cold math instead of betrayal. Career-high 11.5 sacks in 2023. Only eight since. Contenders love a pass rusher with a pedigree and a ticking contract clock.

Brian Thomas Jr. is the other spicy one. Jacksonville’s 2024 first-rounder made the Pro Bowl as a rookie with 87 catches, 1,282 yards, and 10 touchdowns. Last year it dropped to 48/707/2. This year through three games: seven catches, 88 yards, zero scores, and he is looking up at Parker Washington and Jakobi Meyers on the depth chart. The team option for 2028 is a next-offseason decision. That is a lot of smoke for a player who was supposed to be the franchise’s young star.

Highsmith, Payne, Stewart, and Jeudy fill out the board as classic midseason shoppers: proven, expensive enough to move, useful enough that someone will call.

Nobody is saying these six are packing bags tomorrow. Jones is saying keep them on the board while the league pretends nothing is happening. The Porter deal already proved the quiet can break. These are the names sitting next to the mute button.

Deadline season always starts with denial. Teams say they are not shopping anyone. Agents say the phone is not ringing. Leave it to Dwayne Johnson to turn a heartfelt tribute into a boardroom side-eye.

Earlier this week The Rock posted an Instagram tribute to PAC, and the wording was not the usual polite wrestling-world nod. He called AEW “growing into this phenomenal wrestling company,” referred to Tony Khan as his friend, talked about wrestling as a tight-knit group, and sent condolences to the AEW locker room plus WWE colleagues who knew PAC. Condolences are fine. Friendship is fine. The public stamp of approval for the rival brand is where the temperature changed.

On Friday Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer said some people inside WWE were “very surprised” by how Rock framed it. Not shocked that Rock would honor a wrestler. Surprised by the business language. Rock sits on the TKO board of directors. When a board member says the other company is phenomenal and growing into something special, that is not a casual fan tweet. That is a message.

Meltzer also noted Rock and Nick Khan are still close. Nick may or may not have gotten a heads-up ahead of the post. Nobody was mad about the tribute itself. The issue was the praise, the endorsement vibe, the stamp of approval wording. That is not the message WWE wants floating around while AEW keeps selling itself as the rising alternative.

The gossip angle writes itself. TKO board member. Public Instagram. Rival promotion called phenomenal. Friend of Tony Khan. Condolences that crossed company lines. You can feel why some offices got quiet for a second.

Rock has always lived in both worlds: Hollywood megastar, WWE icon, TKO insider. Fans love when he speaks freely. Corporate wrestling prefers when the free speech stays on brand. This time the tribute landed right on the brand line and jumped over it.

Whether Nick Khan nodded along or found out with everyone else, the post is already out there. AEW gets a free highlight reel soundbite from one of the biggest names in entertainment history. WWE gets an internal shrug and a reminder that The Rock still says what The Rock wants to say.

PAC’s tribute deserved the soft landing. The AEW praise is what made the room look around.

Wrestling politics run on optics. A tribute can be warm. A public endorsement of the other company is something else when you help oversee the parent that owns Monday night. Meltzer’s read is that the room cared about the wording more than the sentiment. That distinction is the whole story.

LIV Golf used to buy stars with guaranteed money. Now it wants those same stars to buy the league with the money they are still owed.

Court coverage of the Chapter 11 filing lays out a brutal balance sheet. After the Saudi Public Investment Fund cut funding in April, the league entered bankruptcy with roughly $15 million in cash against a secured debt facility of about $495 million. Gibson Dunn and Crutcher collected more than $7.1 million in legal fees in the 90 days before the filing, even after a reported 20 percent discount. That is not a cash-flow hiccup. That is a reboot with the lights already flickering.

The restructuring deal involving BC Partners Advisors LP is the survival pitch. Players must convert at least 50 percent of unpaid compensation into equity. If the deal closes, those golfers would own 52.5 percent of the common equity in the reorganized company, with about $300 million in new investment contemplated. Court language frames it as “LIV 2.0” and a team holding company underneath. Refuse, and the fallback is liquidation. The player deadline to sign on is October 13.

That is a wild inversion of the original sales pitch. LIV was built to peel talent from the PGA Tour with fat contracts and team golf theater. PIF poured billions into the experiment. Then geopolitics and funding cuts arrived, layoffs hit in August, and in-house legal staff stayed through October while the rest of the workforce thinned out. The golfers who once cashed Saudi-backed guarantees are now being asked to swap unpaid paychecks for a majority stake in a wounded product.

Not everyone is lining up to become an owner of the mess. Sergio Garcia filed to terminate his LIV deal, arguing the uncertainty makes it impossible to plan a competitive career and that sponsors and tournaments may hesitate while contracts conflict. Bryson DeChambeau, Cameron Smith, and others have retained counsel. Players such as An Byeong-hun, Cameron Tringale, and Matthew Wolff are also represented outside the league’s empty coffers. Their legal bills come from their own pockets.

Gibson Dunn’s Scott Greenberg and Richard Birns are leading the legal work with Michael Sirota of Cole Schotz. Filings say negotiations on LIV 2.0 continue, with “further clarity” expected soon. Clarity is doing a lot of work in that sentence. The league still talks about a 14-event season and 57 contracted golfers while asking the talent to finance the rescue.

The plan also contemplates cancelling PIF debt and equity in exchange for releases. If the BC Partners package and player equity swap do not close inside the DIP timeline, liquidation is the listed alternative. Five years of disruption to pro golf, and the epilogue is a court docket where unpaid stars are told ownership is the new paycheck.

For the gossip economy, the punchline is almost too clean. The tour that paid players to leave traditional golf is now asking those players to own the rubble. October 13 is the date on the calendar. Equity or exit. LIV 2.0 or the end of the experiment in open court.
