That in fact helps us, as it is also causing people to search much more to make sure they are finding the best options. People are looking for coupons, local stores, bargains. A relative newcomer, TheFind has posted remarkable growth in a short period of time. In April, for example, it grew 175 percent year over year, noted founder and CEO Siva Kumar.

Harbinger Capital Partners awarded an eight-year, $7 billion contract to Nokia Siemens Networks to provide the network design and equipment for its wholesale LTE network, which will be run by a new venture called LightSquared. LightSquared said its network will allow for terrestrial-only, satellite-only or integrated satellite-terrestrial services (via the terrestrial and MSS spectrum Harbinger scored through a merger in March with satellite operator SkyTerra)–a notable selling point in a wireless market divided between ground-based cellular networks and satellite offerings from the likes of Iridium and others. The network is going to be launched in the second half of 2011, according to the Financial Times.

Like many other Telematics application providers, I was seduced by the over-exaggerated growth projections from the market analysts during the early 2000’s. While our industry experienced moderate growth during the first half of the decade, it always needed some BIG things to happen to help it grow exponentially. This included committed participation by key market drivers such as cellular carriers, customers, device manufacturers, application providers and investors. However, until recently, many of these potential market drivers were never really confident enough to commit. I now believe that our industry is finally poised to take off and here are five reasons why:

Commitment by the cellular carriers:

It is no secret that the cellular carriers have been on the lookout for new sources of revenue. Many have been working with Telematics providers since the late 1990’s, but with our low ARPU, they never really took the industry seriously. Initiatives such as the Sprint / M2M DataSmart and AT&T / Jasper Wireless partnerships are showing that the carriers are now getting serious about this space in order to grow their revenues. They will be big proponents of the benefits of Telematics to their huge customer base, which will significantly increase adoption.

Commitment by customers:

As businesses recover from the Great Recession, they will realize that they can no longer ignore the built in inefficiencies within their operations. They will want to operate leaner and will utilize Telematics applications to streamline their processes and reduce unnecessary expenses.

Commitment by device manufacturers:

Due to the wide range of applications, device manufacturers now see the opportunity to sell hundreds of thousands of devices, which will help drive the economies of scale needed to push device costs down. This will help increase adoption since potential end users will no longer view the implementation costs as being as prohibitive as they were in the past.

Commitment by application providers:

Many new application providers are emerging with unique products that will grow the market. This includes Telematics applications designed to help insurance carriers implement pay-per-use policies. In addition, applications such as smart meter reading and remote asset monitoring will help drive growth due to the sheer number of machines throughout the world. The integration of new consumer applications such as Sync and mbrace by auto manufacturers will easily grow the market by millions of new devices. There are also many remote patient monitoring applications that will play a significant role in how healthcare services are delivered in the future.

Commitment by investors:

As we gain additional traction with the cellular carriers, customers, device manufacturers, and application providers, investors will see Telematics as a relatively low risk opportunity and will provide significant funding to our industry.
Now I believe that the market analyst projections that I and trumpeted over and over during the early 2000’s are now finally coming to fruition. This is because we finally have the commitment from the market drivers that will propel this industry forward.

Apart from that, they will also apply “M2M” (machine to machine) communication technology to the car. Last year, Changan Auto also reached a strategic cooperation agreement with China Unicom. Now, the two largest telecommunication companies in China have all joined with Changan Auto in launching the new project of combining 3G technology with cars.

Online giant Google has signed an agreement to buy ITA Software, one of the leading providers of airline travel software. The deal, for $700 million, is expected to raise more antitrust issues for competitors and the US regulators that have been scrutinizing Google’s every move lately. ITA Software provides software that organizes and compiles varying airline travel data such as flight times and fares. They provide this data to companies throughout the travel industry including airlines, travel agents, online travel portals and even Microsoft’s Bing. In other travel ventures, Google Maps became the official provider of maps to OnStar today, after forming an agreement earlier this month.

Progressive Corp. says Liberty Mutual Group has copied its idea for using an in-car monitoring system to help determine auto insurance rates. Progressive, the Mayfield based auto-insurer, filed a complaint in federal court that said two new programs from Liberty Mutual, called OnBoard Advisor Insurance Advisor and Rewind, infringe on a patent that Progressive received in 2000. Progressive’s complaint says that Liberty Mutual’s programs “include each and every feature” of its patented MyRate service. Progressive is asking the court to award the company damages for the patent infringement.

The report, “The World Market for OE In-Vehicle Telematics Systems”, forecasts that all major manufacturers will sell an increasing proportion of their vehicles with these systems during the next decade. Globally, the percentage of new vehicles fitted with telematics is forecast to grow from 9% in 2009 to 46% in 2017.

Salesforce.com Inc. filed a patent– infringement lawsuit against Microsoft Corp., escalating a fight between the two companies over the growing market for cloud-computing software. Microsoft’s products such as .Net platform and SharePoint perform in a way that violates the Salesforce.com patents, and the “risk of infringement was either known or so obvious that it should have been known by Microsoft,” Salesforce.com said in the complaint. The complaint is in response to a patent-infringement lawsuit Microsoft filed in May against Salesforce.com, which pits the world’s largest software maker against the biggest seller of Internet-based customer-management programs.

General Electric will spend $10 billion over the next five years — double its current R&D budget — on its Ecomagination brand, a cherry-picked line of the company’s best clean tech products. Products bearing the green brand have generated $70 billion in revenues since it was created five years ago. Last year, these clean tech products, which include wind turbines and solar modules, generated $18 billion in revenues, up 6 percent from the year before. GE saw a financial opportunity — and demand — for energy efficient products that reduce emissions and save money for its industrial, commercial and retail customers. And in the past five years, the label has helped two of GE’s business segments — energy and technology — boost revenues and profits considerably.

Twitter has agreed to settle Federal Trade Commission charges that it deceived consumers and put their privacy at risk by failing to safeguard users’ personal information, the FTC announced. In what was the agency’s first such case against a social networking service, the FTC charged that serious lapses in Twitter’s data security practices allowed hackers to obtain unauthorized administrative control of Twitter. The preservation of privacy is “key to any social website, even though the users share their innermost secrets with the world on them,” Washington, D.C., technology attorney Raymond Van Dyke told the E-Commerce Times. “Twitter, brought up on charges of fraud and deception in the FTC for these two intrusions, reasonably settled the matter with a government eager to set an example.”

The international market for nano and pico-satellites is set to witness about 40 percent in increase next five years, the study by the American aerospace consultants Teal group says. “We are noticing a growing trend for more nano/pico-satellites, as evident from the number of such (micro) satellites being launched during the past four years than in the previous 16 years,” Teal group senior analyst Marco Caceres told IANS at the 100th Berlin international air show. The study projects that 416 nano/pico satellites will be placed in the near-earth’s orbits on board 184 launch systems the world over by 2014. The study of the satellite transport in much lower orbits noted that medium term providers of communication services such as Globalstar, Iridium and Orbcomm will have to replace many of their orbiting satellites.

Future deals between established mobile operators and new entrants to the business have the potential to add significantly to the bottom line. And two companies in the United States are particularly set to profit in that case. One of those businesses, Clearwire has taken especially aggressive tactics. It even said it will keep unlimited data plans in order to lure customers away from other telecom companies. Clearwire has an impressive list of strategic investors, including Sprint Nextel, which owns 55%. But the list also includes Google, Comcast and Time Warner Cable. The other company, Harbinger Capital, is taking a different approach entirely. Founded by Philip Falcone, the New York-based hedge fund wants to strike deals with established mobile operators instead. It plans to build a 4G network in 2010 using satellite technology. Harbinger already owns radio spectrum suitable for a network based on exactly that.

Until a recent funding infusion and a refocus of marketing goals, the startup did business under the name “Revolution Computing.” Revolution Analytics, led by predictive-analytics expert Norman Nie, recently released an alpha version of its commercial product based on the open source language known as “R.” The company markets enhanced versions called “Revolution R” and “Revolution R Enterprise.”

China’s Huawei Technologies , the world’s second-largest mobile gear maker, is open to acquisitions but has no specific target at present, a senior executive said on Wednesday. Ken Hu, the company’s chief marketing officer, told the Reuters Global Technology Summit that Huawei will take “cross cultural” integration into consideration when making decisions, but dismissed the potential acquisition of Alcatel Lucent as a “rumor”. Unlike its peers, Huawei posted 2009 profit that more than doubled and forecast strong revenue growth in 2010, fed by an ambitious export drive and strong 3G spending in its home market.

Privacy protection is termed as the most critical issue arising out of the usage of the mobile location services. In order to know more about privacy developments in the US, TheWhereBusiness spoke to David Diggs, vice-president, Wireless Internet Development for CTIA, and Jay Malin, managing director. Both Diggs and Malin are scheduled to speak at the forthcoming, People Tracking and Location USA to be held in Chicago (22–23 June) this year.

Excerpts:

TheWhereBusiness: Can you provide an insight into privacy challenges as of today?

David Diggs: Safeguarding confidential information is one of the most important obligations that telecom providers have to their customers. It’s an integral and basic component of a telecom provider’s service. Telecom carriers have long protected the privacy of their user’s location data, as a matter of law under the Communications Act of 1934. But the current environment involves other services – including location based service providers – that handle private consumer information, but which may not be subject to the same laws. For this reason, CTIA’s “Best Practices and Guidelines for Location Based Services” apply to LBS providers, many of whom are not subject to the privacy laws that pertain to telecom carriers.

The Guidelines rely on two fundamental principles: user notice and consent.

First, LBS providers must ensure that users receive meaningful notice about how location information will be used, disclosed and protected so that users can make informed decisions whether or not to use the LBS.

Second, LBS providers must ensure that users consent to the use or disclosure of location information, and LBS providers bear the burden of demonstrating such consent.

Jay Malin: The most visible issue currently is with whom the data is shared? Location—just beyond where you are now—includes, where you are at night (live), where you are during the day (work), where you shop/eat/visit the gym (gender, age, income), thereby enabling the application provider to build a profile of you that exceeds your expectations. For the most part, this is already being done today by existing data vendors who acquire transaction data.

TheWhereBusiness: Research suggests consumers are concerned, but most services don’t tell them how or where they’ll be used. It has also been indicated that users may not think through the consequences of making their location data public. What steps do you think need to be taken to create more awareness about the consequences among the users?

David Diggs: There’s a responsibility incumbent upon all providers of LBS to educate consumers as to how the consumer’s location information is collected, stored and used.

At the same time, consumers must take the time to understand the information that’s available about LBS applications. It’s important consumers read those license agreements, because that’s where the specifics about the app can be found. Responsible LBS developers have spent the time to understand how their products/services can be misused by abusers, and go to great lengths to incorporate reasonable safeguards against such misuse.

Market growth in fleet-management systems is projected to remain flat in the short term, but should stage a return to healthy growth starting about 2012, according to recent analysis by consulting firm ABI Research. As the market dynamics shift from finding fuel savings to enhancing overall fleet efficiency and productivity, demand will strengthen for broader fleet management capabilities – with overall market revenues expected to reach $9.5 billion in 2015, according to ABI. Among the barriers to fleet management system growth are the absence of standardization, market fragmentation, and the lack of differentiation between operators.

Wall Street analysts, looking past the multiple equity-market failures that have marked the satellite industry in recent years, on March 15 gave a bullish assessment of the sector in general and of the established fixed-satellite services (FSS) industry in particular. Speaking at the Satellite 2010 conference, analysts were even sanguine about the mobile satellite services business. With the notable exception of London-based Inmarsat, mobile satellite services providers have struggled since they first entered the market more than 10 years ago. Besides Inmarsat, none has yet demonstrated an ability to sustain a profitable business model including the replenishment of their in-orbit infrastructure. Several appear to be hanging on uniquely in the hope that a wireless network provider will step in to spend several billion dollars to build out a ground-based network to assure signals are received in areas difficult to reach with satellites.

Motorola was the big mover in the market, as the company shipped 1.4 million WiMAX devices in 2009, with more than 600,000 devices shipped in the fourth quarter of 2009 alone. Chipset vendor Beceem also proved to be a major player as it shipped around 3 million chipset in 2009, roughly two-thirds of which shipped in the second half of the year. WiMAX is currently the only 4G wireless technology available in the United States.

The GSMA announced that mobile operators around the world will invest up to $72 billion in Mobile Broadband* technologies in 2010. The new operator CAPEX investment data, compiled by global investment firm Deutsche Bank, reflects the continued consumer and enterprise demand for Mobile Broadband services and the need for underlying infrastructure, and comes as global HSPA connections reach the 200 million milestone. Asia Pacific will see the greatest investment in Mobile Broadband with predicted capital expenditure of up to $34 billion. North America follows with up to $19 billion, with Europe expected to invest up to $14 billion. Mobile Broadband is set to account for 52 per cent of all operator investment in mobile infrastructure globally. Of all the regions, North America will spend the greatest percentage — 80 per cent — of its total mobile CAPEX investment on Mobile Broadband.

A constellation of satellites that gaze down on Earth will be the centrepiece of Britain’s space mission if plans being put before ministers today are adopted. The proposals from the government-appointed “Space Innovation and Growth Team” lay out a 20-year strategy that aims to expand Britain’s space industry sixfold into a £40bn a year business and create 100,000 new jobs by 2030. It urges the government to double its spending on space projects to £550m a year by 2020, a move that would lift Britain into the top 10 space-funding nations in the world. Today, the UK ranks 21st globally in terms of government support for space missions.
