I need a lot of dental work done, which is going to cost a few thousand dollars. I am a military dependent (spouse) and have dental insurance. However, the insurance only covers about $1,000 per year (or so I was told). I need to have my teeth fixed this year. So I was wondering if you have insurance, will dentists still allow you to be part of the sliding scale program?

Thanks.

Suggestion:

They may. That changes from dentist to dentist. And dentists set the prices, so just talk with them, and they may be willing to allow you on their given the situation.

Another option is adding a dental discount plan to your current insurance. Those do not have a maximum, and cost very little to purchase. What you could do with that is use your insurance first on one day, that way you get the full benefit of that plan, and then on another day, use the discount plan for any proceedure after that. The best one in my opinion is one called the Careington 500 Series Plan. You can purchase it for $6.95 a month, and the start up fee is $20 but it does start right away. There are some other ones out there, but most of the others don't save as much or offer it on a monthly payment. You can get that plan at 1Dental.com.

Just make sure that the dentist takes both, whatever plan you decide. But again before doing that talk to the dentist, sometimes they are more willing to work with you whenever you ask them about other options.

Hope that helps.

Dude, i just had my 4 wisdom teeth pulled out 2 days ago.
Im not in too much pain anymore, just swelling on my cheek. Plus the thread bothers me at times. And i have to take these gross antibacterial pills, and keep an ice pack on my face.
It is less of a feeling of pain then it is just annoying.

(the teeth in my mouth werent bothering me at all, its more of a hastle to have them out, that seems to be the real problem!)

Suggestion:

a moderate amount of pain is still to be expected 2 days after. Any longer than that and you could have an infection or a dry socket.

Our university has this dental clinique that as we have paid our insurance they charge us like $10 now for dental cleaning. They told us that only Flouride process is not included. I am afraid that my tooth get more sensitive after cleaning.

Does it make make the tooth more sensitive? and is it required really to remove the plaques and cavities from tooth?

Suggestion:

If you want to keep your teeth, dental cleanings are absolutely necessary.
If you haven't had a teeth cleaning in a few years, then there may be a lot of tatar buildup (hardened plaque). If there is a lot of buildup under the gums, then yes it can be a little sensitive. But if you dont have your teeth cleaned and the tartar just stays there, it will buildup more and more and you will get whats called gum disease. This causes the gums to be inflamed and recede and even bone loss, and will result in tooth loss, but this happens over years.

Having a cleaning will remove the buildup and plaque, which is required if you dont want cavities and gum disease. And if cavities are left untreated they will just become bigger and reach the nerve of the tooth and then you will need a root canal. These major problems can be avoided with regular cleanings. And dont forget to always take care of your teeth at home inbetween cleanings. Brush and floss.

Suggestion:

Not at all. In fact, many of the dental procedures referred to as "cosmetic" are actually beneficial to the function of the entire mouth. The removal of wisdom teeth, correcting chips or cracks or replacing poor teeth is important to a healthy mouth. Although it may improve the look of your teeth, it often helps the functionality.

i am a student from Nepal. i want to study dental science in USA. so is it possible for me to get there?
and if it is then how?

Suggestion:

The tuition charges vary a lot among dental colleges. Some schools are privately operated, and those are very expensive. Others are publicly run, and while they are not free or even cheap, they are much, much less than privately run schools.

But all dental schools–public and private–have Web sites and admissions offices that can help you understand what it will take to get admitted. There are exams and lots of paperwork that you would need to do, but they can explain all that. So find some dental schools in areas of the United States where you might want to go, and find those schools' Web sites. Contact the admissions office and start from there. Good luck!!

went for a cleaning and found out i have 6 cavities. i made an apt. to have them filled but i need to know one thing. i am under 21 and receive medicaid. i need them filled and need to know does south carolina covered cavity fill-ins and wisdom teeth removal too.

Suggestion:

as long as ur under 21 they cover it. i haven't had real dental coverage since i was 22…i had a 10% discount when i was pregnant last year thanks to the crappy coverage my employer gave me..but it still cost an arm and a leg just for them to tell me i had a cavity and for them to give me a hard time about not coming in regularly. i didn't have enough money to pay to get a cavity fixed even with a skimpy %10 off something that costs 300$ or more.. now i have medicaid because i got laid off..and im pregnant again..but they dont cover any dental at all if u are over 21. they would cover me if i was a drug addict who need treatment..but they will not fix my teeth..how stupid is that? i thought it was really important to have good teeth while u are pregnant..but i guess the medicaid people disagree.. if ur over 21 ur on ur own…

Do full bony impacted wisdom teeth need to be removed?
If all four are bony impacted, is it really necessary to be removed?
4 minutes ago – 4 days left to answer.
Additional Details
they dont cause any pain now but im only 16
8 seconds ago

Suggestion:

Impacted wisdom teeth typically are removed. Just ask you dentist or oral surgeon (if you have one), they can tell you whether or not they should be removed.

i know they give you pain killers and where i work its not relly a good idea to be all doped up while carry heavy packeges so how long ?

Suggestion:

It depends what kind of extraction you had. If it is a simple extraction, you could be back at work that same day. If it's surgical extraction, you will likely want to take 3 or 4 days off. Not everyone needs heavy painkillers for days.

I need some serious, serious advice on what to do.
I am going to be a senior in High school in about a month. I really want/need to get into a community college so I can get my pre-req's done before I can get into dental hygiene school. There is one problem, and that is MONEY.
I don't have a job, because I have no transportation to a job. The closest place is a two hour walk. I live with my mom who is a single parent. She is constantly at work, trying to pay the bills. My dad is dead beat and doesn't drop a dime for anything.
My mom is a bartender, she makes horrible money. She also is an alcoholic and a heavy gambler, which makes all the excess money disappear.

I'm freaking out hardcore, because I won't have enough money to get into community college. I don't even know what classes i'm supposed to take >.<

I'm willing to work in school as hard as I can, but that won't pay for anything!
I have a plan, but I need money to do it.

I'd want to go to a community college in maryland, and then a dental hygiene program. I'd have to pay rent in that time, and I heard that there is a lot of work in dental hygiene school, making it very hard to maintain a job.

I refuse to wait to go to college, I need to make this possible. !!
Any experiences shared or any advice or ANYTHING at all, please please please let me know!!

Suggestion:

I'm sorry about your situation. It is good that you have the determination to become what you want. However, there are ways that you can invest more economically. First off, start looking into scholarships right away. go on www.fastweb.com. That is great. You don't have to be a super star athlete or a genius to get these. There are small scholarships out there that can really be of help. Secondly, try to get Financial Aid. Many students get it in order to be able to study. If worse comes to worse, get a student loan. Yes, you will have to pay it eventually, but you can pay it when you have your career. At that time, you will probably have a good job and solid pay. Also, can you ask a relative for help? If not, maybe go to your community college and ask them for help. There are people there willing to help you.

good luck and I really hope that you do become a dental hygenist.
