Page Titles

Same title for all pages: The title is very vital. Help the world know which of your pages they want to see.

Non-descriptive titles: The page title is the headline for your link in search results. Not to mention an important factor in determining those results. Instead of Toms Page try something like Cartoons by Tom or World of Cartoons.

Meta Tags

Duplicate Meta information on all pages: The keywords and description Meta tags in the head of your webpage help all search engines to classify your page. If you duplicate the tags across all WebPages of your website, they will look similar to searchers. Customize the keywords and descriptions for each page or dont use them at all.

Site Structure

No index.html in the root directory: By default the index.html or index.htm, index.php, default.htm, etc. is displayed when you visit http://www.yourdomain.com. If you dont incorporate it, users will get an error message.

Disorganized file structure: How you arrange your website files wont influence what the website looks like but lack of organization can make your life hell when youre trying to update or redesign the site. Use directories (folders) to help organize your pages and images.

Uploading non-web files: Unintentionally uploading a few Photoshop files can eat up your disk space speedily. Store your resource files such as Photoshop images, Word files, etc. in a separate folder outside your local web folder.

Pages

Under Construction pages: If a page isnt ready to post then dont post it. Keep in mind Under Construction is believed to be a temporary condition file and, after a month or, so it starts to seem permanent.

Frames: There are good reasons why you may want to use frames but there are no good reasons to actually use them.

Horizontal scrolling: The smallest amount common denominator for monitor width is currently 800 pixels. People need to leave space for scroll bars and page margins etc. so 760 pixels is a good standard width for your web pages. Wider may be satisfactory depending upon your target viewers.

Worthless content: If you dont have anything to say, please then dont say it.

Out-of date content: If your content is no longer appropriate, delete it and upload new one, if youre going to incorporate a copyright notice, update it each year.

Overly long pages: Differing to popular belief, theres nothing wrong with long web pages if the content deserves it. But, if it can be done rationally, its usually a good idea to have several shorter pages instead of long pages. If you have long pages then do offer additional navigation to make it easy for readers to move within the pages.

Unnecessarily short pages: In an attempt to make the content fit the design, most of designers regularly resort to a series of short pages when one long one would be more user-friendly.

Orphan pages: Pages you fail to remember to supply links that dont exist as far as the rest of the world is concerned.

Alien pages: Pages that totally disregard the look and feel of the rest of your website leave users feeling like theyve been suddenly transported to a website far, far away.

Following are most common web design mistakes while you are developing your site.

Navigation

Pages without navigation: If you dont suggest them an option, visitors are more probable to close your page than to hit the browsers Back button.

Broken links: Take care of it.

Hidden links: Make links easily recognized by using a contrasting color; underline them, and using button images or changing the rollover state.

False links: Underlined text and rollover images scream link. Use them carefully.

Menus that move: Launch reliable navigation zones and glue with them.

Unpredictable navigation: Once the user learns how to use your websites navigation, dont modify it on him.

Headlines

Restyling text instead of using heading tags: <h1> is not the same as big paragraph text.

Using heading tags for design: Headings are structural elements and should be used to define the reason or point of the text they encircle. Dont use them just because you want big bold text.

Body Text

Using images for text: Text in images cant be read by search engines.

Justified type: Its hard enough to make justified text look respectable on a static printed page. On a dynamic web page its nearly unfeasible.

Using <br /><br /> instead of <p>: It will make formatting tricky.

Using <br /> to control line breaks within paragraphs: Let the browser choose where your lines break within paragraphs. If you compel the issue you may get odd results as not all browsers size type exactly the same.

Typos and grammatical errors: Use your spell checker and check out 10 blatant grammar mistakes that make you look unintelligent.

Type too small: Really, 9 point type on a printed page isnt contented for most people. On screen its illegible for anyone over 30. Except for the small type youre trying to make unreadable 12 points or even 14 should be your minimum.

Too little contrast between text and background: Its really hard to read for anyone.

Using non-breaking spaces to align type: For tabular data always use tables. To give position type as a design element use CSS styles.

Ransom note styling: Using too many fonts, styles, weights, sizes and colors is purely too much.

Images

Images without the alt attribute: Search engines, screen readers and that little text box that from time to time pops up while your mouse is over an image all use the alt attribute. You should too use the same.

Jigsaw puzzle graphics: Dont piece images more than required. Each slice needs an extra call to the server.

Resizing images in the browser: Resize your images in your image editing program previous to placing them on your pages. Images that are gust up in the browser lose superiority and images that are reduced in the browser boost the loading time of a page.

Improper image format: JPEGs are best for photos and incessant tone images. GIFs are best for images with large areas of flat color. Also, see-through GIFs are prone to ghosting if used wrongly.

Use of transparent PNGs without Explorer fix: PNGs offer true clearness but it doesnt work properly in Explorer 6 without a JavaScript fix.

Animations

Unreasonable Flash: No matter how unbelievable your Flash splash page is, nobody actually wants to watch it more than once. If you must Flash yourself, at least give a skip animation or skip intro link.

Non-stop animations: Let your animation cycle move around for few times and then stop it before it gets overly bothersome.

Too many animations: More than one animation on a web page is just irritating.

Use of the <blink> tag: Thankfully most of the browsers ignore it.

Philosophy

Sheet of paper pages: Your screen is not so wide, that things dont unavoidably stay where you put them and, when you get to the bottom, you can scroll. Take advantage of the design potential those attributes and others offer.

Puzzling content and design: HTML tags such as P, H1, H2, etc. are structural elements; they show your page appearance. Organize your content using HTML and generate the design of your pages with CSS.

Miscellaneous

No contact information: The purpose of a website is communication. Make sure people can contact you if theyre interested in your work, product or service.

Dependence on email links: E-mail links only work if the user has an email program available and correctly configured. And you can just hyperlink your email address. Use it.

Failure to act in response to contacts: It is good to ignore spam but, when a rightful visitor takes the time to contact you, a quick reply is just good manners.

Auto-play sounds: Unexpected sounds are frustrating particularly in an office or classroom.

Opening too many windows: confusing user with too many new pages on screen every time they click on a link is just not good.

Failure to check for cross-browser inconsistencies: Your website should work on Macs and Windows, in Explorer, Firefox and Safari. If it doesnt work then youll drive visitors away.

Designing websites isn’t only about creating something tempting. There must to have thought supporting all design related choices. Selection of colors can be conflicting between the success and failure of a website.

So you have to set up a good grouping of graphics and content on your website, but have you ever thought about the colors? Google Docs has been a tool that many bloggers have used to edit their posts before they publish them on Wordpress or Blogger. They do this because of many of Google Doc’s great features: the spell check tool, the synonym tool, and much more. Now for those bloggers that use Google Docs before they post, they can make posts in both English, or any other language with the new translate feature.

All of those junk e-mails that clutter up your inbox aren’t just a massive annoyance but a colossal waste of energy

According to a report released in April 2009 by computer security company McAfee, spammers last years generated a whopping 62 trillion junk e-mails.

That is a lot of emails sent. Do you know the cost in terms of energy wasted to send this messages which are advertisements of Viagra ? Well, these emails -mails could have powered 2.4 million homes for a year or driven a car around the planet 1.6 times, according to the report.

See when we send junk email we really don’t know what we are causing the environment. Not only are we wasting energy but the emails we send every day are polluting the environment. Each junk mail produces 0.3 grams of greenhouse gas, Carbon Dioxide (CO2). That may not sound like much, but when you consider the volume of emails or spam sent, it all adds up.

Now, the question comes in. Do you have to stop sending emails? Really no. You can send emails but there should be, firstly a limit to the number of emails spent. Secondly, stop sending spam emails. Thirdly, use power-saving monitors/LCD’s so that power consumption is low.

So, you had bought a high-end system, packed up with the latest processor and graphics card, several months/years ago, but now, its great for most tasks except for when you want to play newer games. Now, there are games such as Crysis, F.E.A.R, Mirrors Edge and Far Cry among the others that push the envelop of PC gaming and youre starting to feel left far behind?

In the last four to five years, the quality and complexity of 3D game graphics have significantly evolved, surpassing the capabilities even of decent cards such as the GeForce4 6800 or the Radeon X800 which were once, more than adequate components. These days, mainstream performance graphics cards are fairly pricey and may not suit the budget of many PC gamers.

So, the question arises what do you do when you want to play newer, more juice demanding games with your existing system configuration?

This is where utilities like 3D-Analyze come into play. 3D-Analyse is a GPU performance-logging tools with software functions that emulate certain features of graphic cards.

Getting Started

Firstly download the 3D-Analyze. To begin, browse to the folder containing 3D-Analyze and run the executable. When the application launches, click the SELECT buttons, navigator to the games folder and select the executable file that stats the games.

Setting it up

The slew of options and features touted by 3D-Analyze is largely overwhelming, but configuring the application is not a daunting task at all. There are a few basic options to check that will work with most, if not all games. Go ahead and check the following options:

• emulate HW TnL caps
• emulate other DX8.1 caps
• emulate pixel shader caps
• force high precision pixel shader

Enabling these options will provide you a starting point from which to configure 3D-Analyze to run any particular game. If these setting works for you go ahead and create a batch file and save it on your desktop so next time you run the game you dont have to go around and mess the settings.

Many of the bloggers around the world think they are blogging for free, if you are one of them you are clearly mistaken. Unless you are one who’s father earns a million dollars monthly or freeloader who get his weekly allowance, one way or the other you are paying for your blogging activities.

Blogging does have it costs. Sometimes these costs are payed by you or the burden is transferred to someone else. Thinking wisely, one could come up with several costs attached to the blogging activity. Here are a few of my costs that I incur while blogging for last couple of years.

Software Costs Wordpress is a free open-source CMS. But when you are blogging you may need many other softwares. For like example I need a php software editor so I can manage my themes better. It costs me $69 one time fee. I have recently acquired Windows Vista $319. If I divide these costs by 2 years time, it is costing me $16 monthly.

Equipment Costs You may not consider the PC or the laptop you use as a part of the blogging expense. You should. If you need to upgrade your PC or fix something in your laptop the costs of that would come out of your pockets. It cost me about $500 to upgrade my PC to Core2Duo. Then there is servicing of hardware every couple of months costing $50 per visit. Dividing the costs, it is costing me almost $23 monthly.

Hosting & Unrealized Costs You might be or might not be incurring this cost. If you use a free server then these costs might not be incurred by you. When talking about me I pay about $20 monthly.

Utility Bills Your PC runs on electricity, mine does too . Well there are utility bills and unrealized costs like you were feeling a little thirsty so instead of water you drank some soft-drinks. Then there is the internet costs. My average monthly payment of bills is $80 and if talking about unrealized costs I can satisfactory say I am using $30 monthly so that is $110 monthly.

Opportunity Cost Then comes in the opportunity costs. If you are spending about an hour every day on your blog and earning $100 monthly, you could instead use this time to earn $500. So the opportunity costs here would be $400 loss for you. These costs can not be applied in your monthly costs of blogging but these costs could help you realise that your could earn even more.

I guess computing for your monthly blogging or other Internet-related expenses could help you determine how much net you are earning, particularly if youre running an online business like blogging, design, consultancy, and the like.

In all, my monthly blogging activities would cost me about $169.67 per month

Having problems with your blog posts? Did you expect a lot from your last blog post? Did you want a lot of comments and social media exposure and you got nothing at all? Does it seem that the blog post you wrote doesn’t even exists?

Never Assume
Dont assume because you thought this was one of your very best blog posts that your readers will think the same. The blog post should speak for itself. Dont assume that their enthusiasm will match yours on every blog post. Give them facts and important information along with some teasers so they read the whole thing.

Connect With Your Readers
Remember that you are writing for your loyal readers and not those 15 second visitors. If you write what the readers want they will value your hard work if not your work will go down the drain. So you must connect with your loyal readers.

Conversations
Traffic doesn’t really determine the value or the performance of a blog post. The comments do, so in order to get conversations going you must either choose a topic that gets widespread attention or you must indulge your readers by asking them questions so that they do take part in a conversation.

To the Point
Stay to the point. Don’t go rambling about some other stuff in your blog post. Stay on the topic of your blog and keep it to the point. Don’t add too much text nor too many images. For the most part, disconnected content loses interest for visitors and readers, thus fails as a blog post.

Keywords Matter
Keywords are an important aspect or factor of your blog posts success. Choosing the right keywords is important. You should spend some time researching for keywords. Remember if the keywords are not there or not researched for it is eligible that your blog post might never be read hence it would never exsist.

Worthy Title
A title as accepted by many bloggers is the most important part of the blog post. Keeping the title short and to the point at the same time interesting for readers and visitors to click through is an ability every blogger should have.

Linking
While a blog posts success is measured by the amount of traffic and content, the number or incoming links -also called trackbacks – do have accountability. If your blog posts gets linked you have made a successful blog post.

Summary
The summary of a blog post is of great importance. Your blog post should have a summary of what you have written in short words or points. Also the authors word is of real importance. Meaning after the summary you direct towards the readers asking them a question or telling something.

I was researching my way when I found this blog post written by Darren Rowse and i think the questions summed up by him are of great importance in deciding whether a blog post has failed or not.

Is it me or does the world say that Twitter is hacked? I was just surfing some channels around when got the headline that Twitter.com was attacked. The news slide said that Microsoft has said that Twitter.com has been hacked. I tried loading the site many times but no response. Tried a few proxies and nothing.

The site allows users to post 140-character messages, and many of Twitter’s users have complained about feeling disconnected from the news of the day while the site is shut down.

In a blog post, Twitter says it will update the public with more information as it becomes available.

This time it is big. I have been reading the news and it hit me many a times that user accounts were hacked.Twitter’s site went down around 9:30 a.m. ET on Thursday. A message posted on Twitter’s status blog said the site was active again by 11:30 a.m., but that the site remained under attack.

The service is backup again and running.

When you have successfully followed your desired time-table and achieved your set targets, reward your self with little treats. This would differ from one person to another, of course, but the idea is to let positive reinforcement work for you. I was recently going through some of my favorite blogs when noticed, too many comments and no threading. I simply went to the contact form and asked them to thread their comments.

One of the most important aspects of comments is conversation flow. There are many ways to break the flow, but there are also many ways to keep it. Readers who comment on an article usually read existing comments and often comment not only on the particular content in article but also reply to other readers. And in those cases it might be difficult to follow the flow.

Most blogs such as Net.TutsPlus use a threaded comment view. The great thing about the threaded view is that it is very customized and no plugin or any such thing is used. But not everyone can afford high-costing web developers. There are many other ways of using threaded comments. For like I use a plugin called, “WP Comment Remix” not only does it give kike awesome features like Reply but it has great administrative features as well.

Some other blogs, which receive less comments don’t feel the need to use threaded comments. Usually these are blogs sharing vital information such as a programming code or something like that. These blogs have comments that are usually focused on the authors reply, thus they are customized so that the comment by the author has a different background, which makes the comment a bit easier to scan for.

Also, bloggers these days tend to keep the Comments and Trackback sections different. I too wanted to do that but haven’t been getting the time. Separating the two things can make your blog look much more professional.

Then there is use of gravatar and no gravatar. This is totally upto you. If you again receive less comments you should use gravatars to fill up your pages else don’t bother using them.

You may have heard many times before going on a job or to meet someone, First Impression Is The Last One. This is a true saying to some extent. here are times when first impressions are false and perceptions change through time, thought talking about blogs and readers, many of the users are attracted by the overall design of the blog, while some are attracted with the content of the blog.

So, what do you think about your blog? Is it appealing enough to attract new readers stay longer or does it the content you think. What impression does it give off? If you cannot answer that objectively, you might want to take on the help of other people who would be able to give you constructive criticism.

When doing so, try to look at a few important points.

Does your layout look messy?
Does it seem like the elements were put together hastily? Try to determine whether this is what other people see and if so, do something about. Trim your blog, clean it up do whatever you need to get a tight look.

Does your blog look spammy?
Messy I can still take. But at the first signs of spamminess, I pack my bags and hit the high road and I bet a lot of other people do so as well. Choose your ads tastefully and place them in strategic locations without sacrificing the essence of your blog.

Does your blog look too plain?
This might be a matter of preference but I think that there are a lot of readers out there who would like to have some visual aids complementing the text. If you find your blog looking like a 1000-page novel, it might be prudent to consider adding splashes of color and photos here and there.

These may seem trivial to some but they can make a difference as to whether or not someone decides to return and pay you another visit.

Many people and bloggers, even me, say that content is king. Many people don’t really know how to power the content into traffic. I might add something to my recent sayings. Yes, Content is King, but using images with content can bring you a great amount of traffic and exposure.

Traffic on blogs is greatly emphasized by use of proper keywords. Bloggers like me and some others know how to exploit keywords to it’s fullest use. My other blogs receive upto 5% of traffic from Google Images, while this blog get a 2% share as less images are used.

Did you know that the Nokia 1100 is one if the best-selling phones with around 200 million units spread throughout the world? It is not strange for an inexpensive phone to be popular among the masses. However, a Dutch company called Ultrascan Advanced Global Investigations recently discovered the Nokia 1100 mobile phone sets were being sold for 32,000 dollars in some underground forums. Shocked.. I was too. Apparently, hackers had discovered a security flaw in a particular batch of Nokia phones, which could be exploited to steal valuable and private information. Suddenly, the Nokia 1100 had become a hot community in the hacking world. Such is the extent of mobile phone vulnerability in todays world.

What most of us dont realize these days is that a mobile phone can serve as a portable bugging device. Few phones are safe from mobile hacking. It can happen to just about anyone at anytime. Although phone manufacturers try their best to immunize their phones against malware, it is quite easy to infect a phone via a simple SMS, or a Multimedia message also called MMS. According to TMC News, invoking simple Java script commands can be a cause of spywares, just a multimedia message followed by a SMS and you phone is officially been infected. Most of these commands are programmed in such a way a user does not realize that their phone books and messages are at the hand of others. In certain cases hackers can turn on a victims mobile camera and from a remote location spy on their activities. It was on the day that the American television talk show host, Opera Winfrey joined it, that Twitter became mainstream. Suddenly, releasing ones thought ejaculations or following someone elses 140 characters became popular, albeit, uncool for those early Twitter adopters. Before you knew it celebrities, reputable news organizations, business and even Dalai Lama were addicted to this application.

For those of you living under a rock, Twitter is a free micro-messaging service and social networking website that allows users to send and read short updates (known as tweets) of people on their list. It was created in 2006 by Jack Dorsey and is referred to as the Internet SMS.

Although the company itself has not released data regarding the number of active accounts, Forrester Research estimated around four to five million users in November 2008, by February 2009, Twitter had become the third most used social network. Tight now, it seems as if Twitters unprecedented growth and popularity might give Facebook a run for its money in a few months.

The only thing holding Twitter back is the users lack of loyalty. Although a large number of people rush in to join Twitter due to heavy celebrity endorsements, most of them abandon their accounts in a few months. Furthermore, allegiances on Twitter can also be broken by a click of a button. If you are not interested in your neighbors musing, then you can simply drop him as your followee. Overall, tweets follow a one to all formula like the radio.

A lot of people are confused about the business model of Twitter. One cannot help wondering how it is even making money if the service isnt charging users or serving advertisements. Currently, Twitter itself claims that is spending more money than actually what is makes. Its focus is not on making money but to create a compelling service and a great user experience for people around the world. I noticed quite a few days ago that google updated techuse’s backlinks. I expected the blog to reach a pagerank of 3. Today, while surfing DP(DigitalPoint Forum) for new posts, I saw a thread that said that pagerank had updated. I quickly jumped to http://checkpagerank.us and typed in techuse.net and saw the pagerank updated to 3. However, the backlinks dropped, I am not sure why but I am so happy that I am caring less about the backlinks for now, as a few days back they were showing as 44 backlinks and now only 10. Well, no worries I be working on the pagerank after my exams.

In many parts of the world, mobile phones have become such a part of everyday life one wonders how we ever managed without them. For world travelers, mobile phones can offer some incredible benefits. However, they also present certain challenges, not the least of which is whether they will even work when traveling from one place to another.

Why Mobile Phones are helpful

Along with the obvious convenience and quick access to help in emergencies big and small, mobile phones can be both economical and essential for travelers trying to stay connected. An example: it’s not uncommon for mobile calls to be cheaper than local calls made from some hotel rooms. European hotels in particular are known for excessive phone tariffs — three days of connecting locally at a five-star hotel in Amsterdam once cost me more than $100! However, Europeans have no lock on this practice — at a hotel in Quito, Ecuador local calls cost USD$.50 a minute! In contrast, many mobile providers offer exceptional plans that include generous amounts of air time, no long distance charges, and in some cases very reasonable international roaming rates.

In other situations, a mobile phone may simply be the only way to get online. This was the case when I stayed at a lovely historic hotel in Krakow’s old town — unfortunately, the ancient phone lines were too noisy to allow a modem connection at any speed. However, thanks to a GSM phone and modem, I could connect with ease.

Why Mobile Phones can be a challenge

Mobile phone usage for the traveler can sometimes be a bewildering affair. This is due to the preponderance of various differing — and incompatible — mobile systems, often delineating entire continents or regions. The main systems in use are outlined below. The purpose of this discussion is not to delve much into the technical aspects of each system — that sort of thing can easily be found elsewhere on the web. Rather, here we’ll focus more on where these systems are used and factors important to travelers.
GSM – Global System for Mobiletelephones One of the few mobile phone standards with a self-explanatory name that is actually more or less accurate. It’s the closest thing there is to an “international” standard — GSM systems are used in nearly 200 countries (with 600 million subscribers) worldwide, from Europe (where the standard originated) throughout Africa, Asia and Australasia.
Coverage in these areas is for the most part excellent; in some cities the use of picocells even makes it possible to use phones on moving subway trains. Though a latecomer to North America, GSM is now making some substantial gains there, though with a different flavor than used elsewhere. Originally utilizing the 900 Mhz spectrum, GSM providers in parts of Europe, Africa, and Asia later added additional capacity at 1800 Mhz. In North America, however, GSM service operates at 850 Mhz or 1900 Mhz. The good news for world travelers is that most cell phone manufacturers offer dual-band (900 and 1900 Mhz), tri-band (900, 1800 and 1900 Mhz) and a growing number of quad-band (800, 900, 1800 and 1900 Mhz) phones that will work practically anywhere GSM systems are found.
While growing rapidly, in the US and Canada GSM service can be scarce outside of larger urban areas. In Latin America, coverage continues to grow in many countries after it was introduced in Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, El Salvador, Paraguay and Peru (all at GSM 1900) along with Venezuela (GSM 900) and Brazil (GSM 1800). Notable non-GSM countries include South Korea and Japan.

GSM is a feature-rich technology that includes fax capability and SMS (short messaging service). Most providers offer e-mail to SMS gateways, making it possible to receive flight updates and breaking news alerts over the phone. Many providers also offer quick connect data services through ISDN lines, and the latest generation GPRS (Global Packet Radio Service) promises high-speed “always on” data connections much faster than the traditional 9600 bps. If you can’t tell, I’m a big fan of GSM and hope that it soon is available everywhere. My principal mobile phone is a tri-band “world” phone with service from T-Mobile, one of the largest GSM providers in the US with roaming agreements with GSM carriers worldwide .

AMPS – Advanced Mobile Phone System At one time, this system might well have been “advanced” compared to earlier methods. The original 800 Mhz analog cellular system introduced in North America in the early 1980s, now it’s pretty much technically obsolete. However, even though it’s been replaced by newer digital technology, in some rural areas, it still might be the only mobile signal to be had. I often carry a pre-paid AMPS phone as a backup for non GSM-areas. An enhanced version called N-AMPS (Narrowband AMPS) offers some digital phone-like features such as text messaging. Most of the US now uses E-AMPS, for enhanced AMPS. Every country in the Western Hemisphere has 800 AMPS service, as well as American Samoa, Angola, China, South Korea, Lebanon, Nauru, Northern Mariana Islands, Solomon Islands, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Western Samoa.

D-AMPS – The first digital version of AMPS, also using the 800 Mhz spectrum. Still used (though not widely) in certain countries including Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, El Salvador, Israel, Malaysia, Myanmar, Panama, Russia, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam.

TACS – Total Access Communications Service The original European 900 Mhz analog system launched in 1985 by Vodafone. Still used in Austria, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Cambodia, China, Democratic Republic of Congo, Gambia, Ghana, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Kenya, Kuwait, Malaysia, Mauritius, Nigeria, the Philippines, Singapore, Spain, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, and Yemen. Uses a protocol known as Frequency Division Multiple Access (FDMA). Variations include ETACS (Extended TACS), ITACS (International TACS), IETACS (International Extended TACS, NTACS (Narrowband TACS and JTACS (Japan TACS).

NMT - An analog rival to AMPS and TACS that uses 450 and 900 Mhz spectrum. Still used in parts of Europe and Asia, including Algeria, Andorra, Bangladesh, Belarus, Bulgaria, Cambodia, Croatia, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, the Faeroes, Finland, France, Greenland, Hungary, Indonesia, Latvia, Lithuania, Malaysia, Morocco, Norway, Oman, Poland, Romania, Russia, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Swaziland, Sweden, Thailand, Tunisia, Turkey, Ukraine and Uzbekistan. Now that GSM is so widespread, some countries have halted NMT service in the past few years.

TDMA – Time Division Multiple Access The first digital network widely used in the Americas, this is the system which at one time was and still is largely the core of major US wireless networks like AT&T and Cingular. (Of these, however, AT&T and Cingular are now converting some US bandwidth to GSM 1900. They may also use the newer GSM 800, which operates at 850Mhz). Outside the US, TDMA networks can be found in Argentina, Aruba, Bahamas, Belize, Bermuda, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Cayman Islands, Chile, China (including Hong Kong), Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guam, Indonesia, Israel, Malaysia, Mexico, Panama, Peru, Russia, St. Maarten, Suriname, Uzbekistan and Venezuela. Some industry analysts are forecasting that the increasing growth of GSM and CDMA will eventually signal the end of TDMA. Indeed, it is being phased out so rapidly it may have already have been discontinued in many of the nations mentioned here.

CDMA – Code Division Multiple Access A rival to TDMA in the Americas, this standard was developed by QualComm, from which providers must license its use. CDMA carriers in the US include Sprint PCS (which oddly enough started as a GSM carrier), Alltel, and Verizon. There are now CDMA networks elsewhere in the world, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Chile, Hong Kong, El Salvador, Guatemala, Israel, South Korea, Peru, Russia, Venezuela and Zambia. This offers some international roaming capability, though nothing like the near-global coverage available from GSM carriers. In the purest technical sense, CDMA is more efficient than GSM. In actual application, GSM has such widespread following and rich features to keep CDMA from being much of a threat. However, it’s entirely possible that CDMA will contribute to the eventual demise of TDMA in the Americas, though that time is likely to be many years away for the US and Canada, and much longer for Latin America.

iDEN – (Integrated Dispatch Enhanced Network) iDEN is essentially a hybrid of TDMA digital cell phone and two-way radio. Providers are limited (examples are NEXTEL in the US and Amigo in Israel). Phone equipment is produced exclusively by Motorola, the company that created the standard by blending their historic experience with handheld radios with the expertise in cellular technology. Certain iDEN phones offer GSM 900 compatibility, making global roaming possible in many countries without iDEN networks.

PDC – Personal Digital Cellular Behind GSM and D-AMPS, the world’s mostly widely used digital system, though its use is limited to Japan.

PHS – Personal Handyphone System A newer Japanese standard especially designed for high-speed data transmission up to 32 Kbps. Some installations may also be found in parts of China, Thailand and Taiwan.

• Everytime you save a new post or pages, wordpress creates a revision of that post or page. If you edit a post 6 times you might have 5 copy of that post as revisions. Imagine if your post or pages are long and big. It is a huge number of bytes thats on your MySQL overhead. Now WP-Optimize allows you to optimize and shrink your posts table by removing not necessary post revisions from the database. As example, if you have a post which is approximately 100KB data and you have 5 revisions of that post, the total space wasted is about 500KB. And if you have 100 posts similar to it, you have 50MB database space wasted.

Sometime Plugins Don’t Help

Sometime plugins slow your blog. If you use excess of plugins, even those which are not needed then it slows down your Wordpress blog. Plugins which use java scripts usually slow down your blogs, so try and not use them.

Some Tips

• Optimize Your Images before posting them.
• Try and not use many plugins.
• Use a less graphic-oriented theme.
• Don’t do excessive advertising.

Today, I’d like to review my favourite site for technology tips, guides and tweaks. Yes, Raymond.cc is my favorite place to visit. I am one of the 67000 feed subscribers and I am proud of it. This person is a real helper. His blog shares with you unique tips every other day and in 95% of the cases these tweaks do come in handy.

Well, this is not enough, not only he shares with us free stuff but also is giving free live computer support, ones which people charge more than $100. Also, he runs a forum on his site, so if you have any troubles go ahead and ask him. I am sure you won’t be dissapointed with him.

Recently, Techuse was updated to a premium wordpress theme by WooThemes. It cost me some bucks but it was worth it. I have posted many a times about wordpress themes, how to select them, what to do and what not to? Thus today, I decided to tell you on how to make a theme unique in its own way by changing the style.css and other pages.

1. Style.css

The style.css is the main stylesheet which is worth editing. Now, you’ll ask what were the changes I did? Well, first of all I changed the font from Arial to Georgia, increased font size, changed the blockquote color etcetera. You too can do this. Simply make a backup of the style.css and work your way around it, changing colors, text and what not.

2.Adding custom pages

I have added a custom Archive Page. I too have added a Gallery Page, but I didnot edit it. It comes pre-included with my WooTheme.

3. 404 Page

I edited my 404 page in such a way, that if a reader gets lost, he is able to find his way. I added a search bar as well as the archives page

With my recent post “How Page Rank Can Help Blogging” I got many emails saying how to build up pagerank, what is pagerank and some questions like these, so I promised a few people that this month I will write something on Google Pagerank.

What is Pagerank?

Google Describes pagerank as;

PageRank relies on the uniquely democratic nature of the web by using its vast link structure as an indicator of an individual page’s value. In essence, Google interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote, by page A, for page B. But, Google looks at more than the sheer volume of votes, or links a page receives; it also analyzes the page that casts the vote. Votes cast by pages that are themselves “important” weigh more heavily and help to make other pages “important”.

To me pagerank is simply a ranking given by Google for having the most amount pages indexed in their search engine. I won’t be detailing all about pagerank as it is a vast and never ending topic. To find out more refer here.

Links Indexation

Speaking of links getting indexed, you might ask how can you get these links indexed and how many links you need before you gain a pagerank. To answer your questions in a simple way; These links are popularly known as “Backlinks” and the more backlinks you have the better and higher pagerank you gain. Offcourese, pagerank depends on the amount and the quality of the backlinks, I have a graph with me which shows approximately how many links are needed before you gain a pagerank. However, the table below is not appropriate and is in no way approved by Google. It is just an assumption by few SEO experts.

How To Gain Backlinks

Again, as said before backlinks are essential for pagerank. So the question now comes, how to gain pagerank?

Well, there are many ways to gain backlinks, namely; Article Submission, Social Bookmarking, Blog Commenting, Directory Submission, Forum Posting, Link Exchange and many other popular ways. Feedburner is a tool which allows your blogs feed to be syndicated and subscribed to more easily to your readers. It really is a fantastic tool and I have no doubt you will already know about the site already since so many large blogs use it.

Basically, when you sign up to feedburner, your feed url goes to an easy to read page where readers can add your feed to their chosen rss reader.

As well as tracking stats and giving you other monitoring tools, the feature most blog owners use is displaying a feedburner tool called FeedCount which displays the number of readers you have. It also acts as a link which goes to your feed page.

At the time of writing this post my feedcount stands at 89. I am really impress with it as my blog is still new and emerging on daily bases.

However it raises the question – When should you publicly display your feedcount on your blog?

Clearly, when you have 0 readers it isnt advisable to display it. As a zero count gives the impression that your site isnt worth subscribing to. Sad but true bu we are much more likely to subscribe to a feed that is popular and has a lot of readers than one that doesnt.

Its common sense isnt it. If hundreds of people are subscribing to a blog then the blogger clearly writes good articles and updates pretty frequently. We know a zero count doesnt look good so at what point should you display your count.

I am a lazy guy, so i reallydon’t have time to go and check the readers to this blog everyday. I just decided to go with the FeedCount as soon as it reached 50.

Do you think blogs should til they have more readers or even broadcast it from the very start? I wait for your answers.

Well, it does not depend on what type of blogger are you? You want to keep your readers a.k.a visitors on your blog for longer periods. If your readers stay longer on your blog, you will have motivation to write more and share more. Thus I have compiled a few tricks to keep your readers motivated towards your blog.

Great Design

Like great food is the way to reach a man’s heart, a good theme is the way to attract and reach your readers heart. Try to go for a unique design or if you can not go for a unique design try to find a very good free theme.

Freebies

People like free stuff. Give them something that they can take away for free. In general, a product that ensures they will be branded with a good impression of your site, returning to see if youve updated or added new products.

Sharing is Caring

Add options for them to share your content with other people. Use Wordpress plugins as well as try Offline Promotion by making your friends come to your blog etcetera.

Post Good

It does matter on how you write your posts, but do try to make a conclusion after your post. Try to make bulleted posts.

Faster Blog

I will soon share with you ways to make your blog run faster. The faster your blog the more people visit. But for now, make sure you optimize your images, as well as keep your database updated.

Conclusion

Enable Multi Google Talk

Often we always have 2 email accounts. One for business and official purposes and one for family friends and personal needs and managing both is one hell of a task. You dont need to login an logout every time you switch your Google accounts. A very simple command line parameter in Google Talk shortcut can do the job for you.

To enable the Multi Google Talk tweak just do the following steps:

1. Create an easy shortcut to Google Talk on your Windows Desktop
2. Right click on the shortcut and click properties. The Target box will show you the path of the EXE for Google Talk – something like C:Program FilesGoogleGoogle Talkgoogletalk.exe
3. Just change this to: C:Program FilesGoogleGoogle Talkgoogletalk.exe /nomutex
4. Now Relax and Enjoy

p.s. the /nomutex can be used in front of any Google Talk shortcut.

So, building more quality backlinks by doing the following steps, it’s not 100% working but you could be able to increase your traffic, and perhaps higher Pagerank, no harm at all.There are 6 useful tips on how to get more backlinks to your blog :

1) Commenting in blogs
Commenting in blogs could be a great way to build up one-way backlinks, try to comment in dofollow blogs will be a plus. In this way, you could be able to get tonnes of one-way link if your article is attractive and useful.

5) Social media marketing
Create strong profile on social media sites like Digg, propeller, Reddit, Newsvine and submit your favorite stories there. You could be able to get some traffics from there, essentially you could be able to get one-way link too.

6) Triangle Link Exchange
This will be great if you have 2 or more blogs which have same niche, says MMO niche. When you look for MMO niche blog to exchange link, ask them whether they’re comfortable to do a triangle link exchange. Example, Blog A & Blog B are your blog, BLog C is others’ blog, so you suggest him to link to your Blog A from his Blog C, and your Blog B link to his Blog C. You may notice some Advertisements on the top and the bottom of posts. Yes, I am trying to monetize the site as I am in need of some cash. So while monetizing I encountered many articles on Wordpress plugins, so I thought why not sum them up and share some plugins with you.

1.Adsense-Deluxe

If your site makes use of Googles Adsense advertising, Adsense-Deluxe is the perfect plugin to help you manage things easily. 4.WP-OpenAds

OpenAds is a great tool to help you manage private ad sales entirely on your own. It provides many of the tools made available by large advertising companies and is completely free to download and install. In addition, its also really easy to start using right away. If you figured out how to get Wordpress running, you can figure out how to install OpenAds. Although Bookmark Bliss is not currently using OpenAds to manage our private ads, Ive used OpenAds (aka phpAdsNew) dozens of times for both clients and personal projects and I highly recommend it. Wp-OpenAds is a great little plugin that Ive tested a few times that allows you to easily configure your blog to run ads generated by the OpenAds system

5.WP Affiliate Elite

This is a great plugin for all of those “Lazy” bloggers and affiliate marketers out there. This plugin makes it easy as heck to add your affiliate links to any keywords or keyword phrases in your posts and pages automatically. Imagine being able to just write up a quick blog post on a product youre promoting, add a few keywords and publish, and knowing that the keywords you added are automatically linked to your affiliate link.

6.Buy Sell Ads

This simple plugin helps you easily integrate your Buy Sell Ads zones and includes anti-AdBlock measures to prevent AdBlock (and similar software) from blocking the advertisement.

7.WP125 Ad Management
If you publish 125×125 ads on your blog, then you might be interested in the WP125 Ad Management plugin that makes it extremely easy to upload, change, deactivate and maintain ads on your blog.

8.Smart Ads
A great plugin that makes advertising on your blog less intrusive to your regular readers but also allows you to monetize your blog’s archives. With the Smart Ads Wordpress plugin, you can automatically place ads before and after your blog posts but with a time delay. In other words, you can choose to have ads appear only with posts older than 10 days, 30 days, and so on. It’s up to you.

9.Ad Rotator

This is a great plugin for people who want to maximize the ad space on their blogs. Using text files that you create, the plugin automatically rotates between the ads you specify to appear in a particular space on your blog.

After the recent April Pagerank update, Techuse got a Pagerank of 2, which was too low according to my expectations. So, after thsi update an idea kinda come up in my mind of how pagerank effects your blogging experience. I have tried to compile a few advantages the owner of the blog gets when he/she gains a pagerank.

Advertising

Advertisers prefer to put their advertisements of blogs that have a good pagerank. You can easily get 3~4 month ad spots for around $20 ~ 30. So, these advertisement spots are a plus for the average blogger.

Sponsored-Posts

These posts are like paid-to-post advantages that a blogger receives. Advertisers send a certain amount of cash -depends upon pagerank- to you for writing a certain article for them describing their services. Sites like Sponsoredposts can be a great way to find these types of sponsored posts.

If you have Top-Commenter installed, link hungry people come to your blog and comment, however these comments can be discouraging, yet comments are comments. How comments effect a bloggers are discussed here.

Guest Posts

Again, link hungry people come in and make a guest post on your blog, inturn you gain a good article and they get themselves some traffic as well as solid backlinks. The advantages of guest posts are shared here and tips to write a guest post shared here.

I have been using Gmail for as long as i know. GMail is owned by Google, so you can expect to see great new features, that never have been seen before. GMail tell its 10 reasons to use it, here.

Now, there are countless number of GMail functions that I have come across with, but i’d like to tell you about some of the latest functions introduced this month or so.

The best feature i like it “Undo Send“. Yes, now with Gmail you can reverse an email sent, however the time span to undo the email is little, to me count 3~5 secs, but this is a feature never seen before. I think a great addition to this feature would be users entering their own time or selecting from a range of times before the could undo the sent messages.

Another observable feature is “Task Manager“. So as soon as you open your GMail, you will be shown a list of Tasks that you have to complete. This is a very good feature for me, as i tend to keep forgeting what i have to do. So instead of writing down all the task in my notepad, i use GMail Tasks.

Many rookie bloggers, and even some seasoned ones, do not take the time to plan their blogs before just going ahead and registering onto a blog host and lapping some text on it. There is way too much content out there on the Web for anyone to bother to pay attention to just another awful looking webpage on the internet. Keep the cardinal rule in mind; if it doesnt attract, it detracts.

There are indeed six habits which can effectively get a blog (and its author) the distinction of being annoying.

Weird Color Schemes
You read here on what are the different mistakes that blogger make, so as a rule of thumb, if you think your color scheme is not upto mark, simple choose one from a selection of pre-designed templates available on most blog hosting websites. Unformatted entries
There is nothing more irritating than a post without any paragraphs. It is bad enough that the post seems to go on and on, but if it is not paragraphed, it makes the process even more. Some entries also seem to be entirely written in informal language or SMS shorthand. An occasional b/c or w/o is fine. However, entire blog entries in this form of text can put off the readers completely. Bloggers should paragraph sentences, and try and punctuate sentences, and try and write in the accepted standard English , limiting spelling and grammatical errors to a minimum. Most blog hosting sites have a spell-check feature on their text editors. Use it!

No link to comments
Comments are probably the most important part of any successful blog. If your readers cannot give you feedback, they will probably not see any point in returning to your blog in the future. Some blogs offer no option for readers comments at all or the comment section is hid under stickers and banners. So, try to choose a template with less stickers and all to give way to comments.

Last update, last year
Simply, put, outdated blog bore readers and will eventually cause them to be disinterested. Quite a few bloggers maintain an excellent blog for a few months, and then forget all about it. Regular visitors only find that it has not been updated at all for a while.

Try and update at least once a week or, at the very least, post a few lines about your intended absence and return. The latter will ensure that regular do not waste any minutes of their life visiting a dormant blog.

Who is blogging?
Some bloggers never reveal their real identity opting, instead to employ pseudonyms. This is, of course, a sensible approach. However, there are some who do neither. To top it off, their blog titles are also quite unimaginative.

Your fans might not have a problem with this if they are reading your blog on regular basis. First-time visitors, however, are naturally able to remember your blog if they see a catchy pseudonym or an interesting blog title. If you have neither feature, then do no expect your blog to be memorable to passers-by. This issue also comes up when someone is trying to link to your blog. What would they refer to it as?

• What you are going through is really a bloggers block and that you are not using the black as an excuse to cover up for your laziness.

• Visit other peoples blogs and read their posts carefully. You might come across an entry which simulates you to post your opinion on the topic.

• Come up with interesting and interactive ideas interactive in the sense that maybe you can post up a small entry and then invite others to express their view points. The resulting comments can then help you write follow-up posts.

• You can even write about having a bloggers block and how it is making your feel. It is quite possible that you may work out a solution yourself by writing about it repeatedly. However, make sure your posts are not whiny in nature.

Well, when a blogger or writer doesnt get any ideas of what to write it is called the Bloggers Block. Imagine this, you are coming back from school and in get caught up in the traffic. You are eager to go home and update your blog, once your reach your home you open your pc, all charged up, you open your browser and just before you start to write you go blank. You are at a complete loss as to where to begin and where to end it.

If this situation sounds familiar to you, then you are suffering from what is refrained to as a Bloggers Block. This has nothing to do with being a good blogger or an average one; a famous blogger or somebody unknown; an expert or a novice. It can happen to anyone but the symptoms are way too familiar. Suddenly, you find yourself starting at the screen at a loss for words. Soon, the panic takes over and you start contemplating whether or not you should commit blogicide.

Bloggers usually suffer from a block not because they have run out of things to write about. It is simply a matter of thinking of stuff to write about and to express it adequately. As a blogger, the appeal of your blog posts depends on how vivid a picture you are able to sketch for your readers, through your writing irrespective of the overall theme of your blog. If something is hampering your descriptive writing abilities, it means you need to recharge your blogging batteries. Interestingly, bloggers seem to differ in what causes them to suffer from a bloggers block.

There are no cast-iron reasons for a bloggers block. It just happens and annoyingly persists. However, if you are going through this phase, then maybe you will experience some solace from the fact that such a block exists and many good bloggers suffer from it. It is not an abnormality of any kind in fact, it is just a phase.

They are something which a normal blogger cannot live without. Even though they may present aplenty, they can also make him/her grit the teeth in frustration. Yes, the reference here is to the comments which come from blog readers, both regulars as well as first-timers.

Comments are something which can keep a blogger going. There is very little motivation to sit down day after day to type out a thoughtful and interesting blog post when you know that no one is going to stop by and bother reading the whole of it, let alone write anything in response.

On the other hand, you can also have a bunch of people frequently visiting your blog and posting in comments to your posts. Amongst, these most of the comments do not make sense, are a clever disguise of spam or are simply opposing what you wrote in a manner that is rude, crude and hurtful.

This basically gives rise to a catch-22 situation. Are no comments better than bad comments? Both can equally dissuade a blogger from blogging regularly and on specific topics both can be a source of major discouragement, especially for a novice blogger.

However all things considered, the fact that comments are actually coming is a positive sign. How to make them positive is something you can not really do on your own. As one blogger aptly wrote, If you cannot stand criticism, stop blogging and go make your fan club instead. In other words, the minute you start going public (read blogging) you should have this thought at the back of your mind that some people will like it and others will not. If they are indeed posting negative comments, there is a little you can do.

The key of course is without losing your patience; come down to level of whoever is messing up your comment box. Just reply calmly and if the commenter gets overly obscene, you can always block him/her out and delete the comments. Yes, it is actually as simple as that.

For few gaming is just a time pass whereas for many is a passion in the machine that helps you escape the real world. Here are some tips to keep your video game consoles in good working condition.

If you encounter video jerks or disk not found messages randomly while using your gaming console, then it is time for some instant action. The chances of the occurrence of such problems are rare, if the device is not mishandled. Few precautionary steps and care can give your machine a longer life. Here is an overview about areas that need care and attention.

Lens:
Like the CD ROM devices, your game console also contains a sensitive lens that needs some scheduled cleaning for optimum results. You can use lens cleaners that are easily available in the market. However, beware of substandard lens cleansers.

Positioning:
Place the console on a smooth surface. Improper placement can lead to data loss and make it difficult for the lens to read data efficiently.

Scratches:
Make sure to use scratch free optical data disks, otherwise the lens will be at risk.

Dust:
Keep the gaming console completely covered when they are not in use. Protect them from dust particles because these can be a real killer for your machines.

Ports:
Attach joy pads, memory sticks and power connection carefully and gently. Avoid removing them when your machine is in use.

Do not wrestle with your joy pads or any other accessory attached to the console. Usually players tend to press the buttons with a lot of force, thinking that the impact will be transferred to the game play. So, be cool and calm.

Cooling:
The more you play, the hotter your machine will become. So, if you play for long durations, say over 3 hours (I like play over 5 hours ) then you need to place it in a cool environment. For I keep a fan next to the console for cooling. Remember, the spinning of the CD or DVD inside the console generates a lot of heat, hence it is not recommended to run the device for long sessions.

Storage:
You may also try storing your favorite games on memory sticks. It will give you better experience as compared to playing them via DVD or CD.

Now if your looking for a Page Rank jump the next update I really suggest you give sponsoring a shot.

2. Traffic Boost

When, you sponsor a contest, yourblog is listed on the contest holders page, and inturn people visit your blog to see what the heck it is. Also, this traffic is most cases turn out to be loyal readers.

3. Stand Out

When readers see your blog at a couple of contests, it makes them think that your blog has grown up, and won’t let you down. This will help you gain loyal readers.

1. Include Images

Use services like flicker and Google Images to find you the image that corresponds to your guest post. For example, my guest post was related to questions, so using Google I sniffed out an image that corresponded. This image should go at the very start of your blog post.

2. Include Examples

When writing your guest post, pick out a blog post from the blog you are writing on, and include it. This will make the blog owner happy and will definitely use your guest post in his/her blog.

3. Use Proper English

By this I mean to say is that you should write your blog post in Ms Word or any of your favorite editing software. This will help you not make typing mistakes, also if you feel that a certain word should not be used it could be replace by a synonym.

4. Dont Write Too Much

Dont write too much text. Keep it short and to the point. I as a reader hate it when there is too much text to read. There are many other who also hate reading too much text,

5. Try using Pointers

I really love those posts, in which the content is well paragraphed and pointers are given. I have seen posts like them gain traffic a lot. The more traffic they gain the much better for you.

6. Good Endings

Always try to write in a conclusion of your blog post in the very end summing up all the key facts that you have covered in your post.

Why writing this post? Well, I recently wrote two guest posts on two different blogs. It was fun writing and I wanted to know what the experience was like? The first at bloggingtips and second at blogussion.

Publishing guest posts on popular blogs is a tried and tested way to get inbound links and traffic. Also, if youre looking to increase the exposure of your blog and gain new readers, consider submitting articles to be posted on other blogs. This article will cover the reasons for writing for other blogs as well as the steps required for a beneficial experience.

So are these the only two reasons for guest posting? These two reasons mentioned above are too are very brief. Worry not! There are more than two reasons for guest posting on a popular blog and furthermore Ill be explaining you the above reasons in full details.

Why Write Guest Posts for Other Blogs?

1 – Its one of the fastest ways to reach a new audience.
When you write a post for another blog you are getting the opportunity to showcase your knowledge and ability in front of targeted readers. If your blog is on a similar topic as the blog in which your post is published, you stand to gain a lot of new visitors.
Obviously, the amount of exposure you get will depend on which blog publishes your article. The number of subscribers isnt the only significant factor. Some blogs have smaller audiences, but their readers are much targeted and very loyal.

2 – Potential new subscribers.
If the readers like your post they may be inclined to subscribe to your RSS feed. In this way guest posting can be a very productive source of free advertising. Who doesnt want more subscribers?

Ok, so your primary motivation is not to help other blogs, but this can have big benefits down the road. If you help another blogger, they are likely to remember you and theyll be more likely to repay the favor or to link to you in the future. Even if they dont, its still nice to know that you can make an impact for others.

You can find a trillion blogs on the internet, such type in “blog” on Google and be amazed. So what are the ways in which your blog could stand out from others?

1. Find the domain name.

If you already have a Web site, find a way to attach your blog to your business site. The next best thing is might seem that of owning the domain name (dot com preferably) that is descriptive of your niche. In fact, the next best thing might be using your own name for your blog. People already know that.

So go ahead and buy it on GoDaddy.com, mydomain.com, Register.com

2. Figure out what blogging tool would work best for you.

Many bloggers prefer WordPress – Marketing 2.0 was built on a WordPress theme. For expert advice on this platform I recommend Lorelle VanFossen, who has literally written the book on WordPress. Of course, you can always go with a free tool – Blogger.

3. Tell your readers about you.

Use the about function of your blog template wisely to capture the essence of what you help people do and your experience. Because this is for a blog, strike a good balance between business speak and human voice, it will serve you well.

4. Register your blog to begin spreading the word.

I would wait to iron the kinks out and get comfortable with it, especially to know if blogging is for you. You might also wait until you write a few posts and build content before you publicize it. It will help people subscribe to your feed if they have a small selection of posts to read.

Register the blog at FeedBurner to provide RSS and email feeds for people to pull your content. Although less popular than it used to be, Technorati is also used to search for content (tags are important for this service). The more important registrations are with the search engines, especially Google and Yahoo, but also MSN search and Dmoz.org. Your submissions to those sites are free. Make sure you are indexed so you can be found.

5.Create a blogroll or a resource section.

If you have blogs you read regularly and utilize in your content, or think your customers would enjoy learning from, list them on your blog. A blogroll is generous in two ways – it allows the people you link to to find your blog, and it allows your readers to expand their knowledge by finding other blogs you recommend.

6. Link out from your blog as much as needed/possible.

Take for example this post. There are a lot of smart people in my network who have written great posts on some of these topics. Bookmark their great posts and refer to them when you write about that topic. This is also good blogging etiquette and you do want to be a good neighbor online.

7. Comment on other blogs and sites.

This is not only an opportunity for exposure and link placement, it’s also a way to be generous and participate in the business community. Leaving comments is akin to networking actively in the off line world. This will lead to gaining backlinks. (Tips to Link building to promote your blog)

8.Give people ways to share your content.

Use tools like Share This, it helps in social networking. All of my posts have this plugin.You can become an active promoter of other people’s ideas, and in turn receive visibility, on Stumble Upon, Digg, and Reddit.

9. Give people ways to engage with you.

The most obvious one is to open the comments function. If you decide to moderate comments, which is perfectly understandable, make sure you stay on top of it. People will come back to see their comment posted. In the rare event that you decide not to post a comment for some reason, make sure you reach out to the person who left it by email (required to comment) first. Also, write a comments policy and post it on the site.

For a good example of a comments policy see the one on the sidebar at Jeremy Pepper’s blog. Customize the content to fit your purpose, style, etc.

10.Use a robust search function on your blog.

I use the wordpress default search funtion, it works like a charm for me. Google search button (javascript) is also good, as well as other custom search buttons. The point is to allow people to search for a topic directly on your blog instead of coming to it from an outside search engine, where you registered.

11. Sign up for an RSS aggregation service.

This is so you can stay on top of the blogs and online publications you read by syndication. I use Google Homepage. Many prefer Google Reader, or use Delicious, Bloglines, and even FriedFeed (instead of individual RSS you add individual accounts here, which include more than just the blog RSS).

12. Listen to what people are saying about you.

There are many tools you can use to monitor the conversation. I use Google Alerts with my name, the name of my blog, and also topics that are of interest to me.

13. Publicize your blog to your network by printing the URL on your business cards, posting it on LinkedIn, Facebook, your Twitter account, including it in your email signature, in your newsletter – you get the idea.

14. Install analytic software to track traffic sources.

I use Google Analytics, which is free. Another great free tool is Quantcast, which boasts 10M of directly measured web properties. This specific tool will also help you in case you decide to sell advertising on your site as it allows people to define an audience and measure your site on that basis.

15. Create timely and useful content.

This is worth a mention. As business-savvy professionals, you already know that newsletters and articles help you grow your business because they allow you to show your expertise. Blogs are no different. Take this post, for example, you can bookmark it and refer to it as you are building your social media presence, you can share it with colleagues and business associates. The same rings true for your own great content.

Consider the search engine optimization (SEO) value of your content as well. To learn more about SEO, I recommend the work of Jon Wuebben. There are entire blogs and sites dedicates to SEO.

16. Consider using audio, video and rich media. Different people learn and respond to media differently. If you’d like to start your own radio show, check out BlogTalkRadio, for example. It’s free and it will allow you to interact with your audience by way of comments.

17. Create opportunities to meet face to face.

Blogging can lead to many more opportunities to meet professionals face to face. Whenever you travel, you should be able to reach out to people you have met online at that destination. Think about opportunities at events you attend or speak at. Publicize that event on your blog and invite people from that area to contact you so you can meet at the venue.

18. Make it easy for people to contact you.

I am still amazed at how in this day and age many sites, blogs included, do not have information on how to contact someone. Include your email, phone number, office location, anything that will make it easy for people to find you.

19. Post consistently and regularly.

You do not need to post every day to make an impression. However, you will want to set expectations for your readers that there will be a consistent flow of content for them to read. Decide how frequently you will be able to post, then stick to it. This is a promise you make and it will be easier to keep if you announce it openly. It will also help you be disciplined about writing.

20. Keep a scrap book for ideas.

One of the concerns many business owners have, aside from the learning curve on technology, is their ability to come up with content ideas. Keep a file, or a notebook, where you jot down thoughts after business conversations. Write down the questions people ask you and post about your thoughts to share with your readers. Ask questions yourself. Talk about how you solve problems.

21. Run polls and surveys at your blog.

Also contests, games – these are all great ways to engage your readers and learn more about what they think or worry about. I use Poll Daddy, a free survey and poll tool. Free Blog Poll and Blog Poll are also good tools. For surveys, you may use Zoomerag or Survey Monkey, for example.

22. Use graphics and photographs that add to the content.

There are some sites that offer free charts with data and research like eMarketer, Marketing Charts, Compete, and of course analyst blogs and sites often provide great charts and research. For photographs, browse Flickr (consider creating your own account there as well) for images licensed under a Creative Commons license. You can also buy great images for a few dollars at iStockphoto.

When properly tagged and indexed, these images will also drive traffic to your blog. Of course, you can have your own graphics and charts. In that case, I would add the URL of your blog in small type right in the chart or graphic so that people who use or share it will find it easier to attribute it back to you. A great example of visual imagery are the illustrations by Critical Mass agency VP and blogger David Armano.

23. Write compelling titles that will make people want to read. Take a look at your feed reader and see what attracts you. That would be a good gage of what looks interesting. All the same rules of apply here as they do for articles. Lists are always catchy. Revealing secrets, lessons, reasons why. Teaching “how to” do something, explaining why are all good ideas.

24. Include a call to action.

If you want people to take an action, go ahead and ask. Be honest and transparent and if you provide value, people will not have a problem referring you or taking the next step. Just make sure you balance that with great content and engagement.

25. Have fun!

This should go without saying, but as business professionals, we can get too caught up with the professional side and spend less time showing our human side. People buy from people they like and a blog is an excellent medium to let others get to know you in a more informal way.

In an ever changing approach by bloggers to keep up with the Google SERP algorithms, many of us get carried away with our SEO Techniques. Its not a surprise nor a shame, because without this experimentation, we are bound to hit a plateau in progress.

I would just like to outline tips that will help you build quality back-links to your site, with minimal to no costs!

Quality back-links serve two main purposes. Firstly, it helps crawlers find and locate your site. Once this is accomplished, the search engine crawler goes about indexing your site. The next purpose; back-links help crawlers identify how important your blog really is.

The first purpose obviously only applies to new blogs, but the second one will still be valid even 10 years down the track. These back-links also help the Google Crawler to assign your pages with a Google PageRank. Simply to put, the more authoritative websites that are linked to your site, the more important it is perceived to be.

1. Write content that is useful – Writing resourceful content will always attract links, hands down. If you write an article that is overflowing with useful and resourceful information – people will link to it.

2. Dont forget trackbacks – This handy feature for Wordpress can be great way of returning the compliment for a dedicated link.

3. Remind your readers to link to you – After each posts, just throw in a quick reminder that your article can be socially bookmarked or linked to.

4. Spread the Love – Dedicate a post or two per week to link to other bloggers posts that you found useful. More often than not, they will tell their readers Mr.X linked to my post, how cool!

5. Trade articles with webmasters – Similar to guest posting, just swap articles with a fellow webmaster.

6. Release a Press Release – This guide shows you how to write + submit a good Press Release. See i linked someone

7. Hold a contest with an incentive. Contests are great for link-baiting because when people talk about it, there will always be Check it out here tagged along with it.

8. Release a free design. If you can make/buy a custom WP-Theme then release it for free to your guests, you can really kick off on a viral market. Just dont forget the Designed by [YOUR LINK]

9. Release a free plugin. This serves a similar purpose as a design, but not so much with a direct back-link. Instead, if your plugin is useful, the incoming links will just grow exponentially.

10. Become active and post on relevant forums

12. Try not to forget your signature on forums, otherwise the whole thing is an epic fail.

13. When commenting on blogs, try to use post URLs instead of just your Blog URL – This can help regulate your links evenly amongst your blog, and not just solely to your front page.

14. DONT spam communities with your links to your site, offer a reason for them to visit and contribute with a purpose.

15. Submit your blog to directories – These are still helpful when it comes to getting indexed, especially these directories listed here.

16. Search up DoFollow Blogs/Forums – These will carry the most significant back-links.

17. Browse Craigslists and they can provide you with a free or cheap link.

18. Build on your Technorati Profile

19. Become a Sponsor – Whether it be a theme, whole website or a small project; the sponsors always get mentioned.

20. Run for Charity, and request others to help spread the word.

21. DONT spam. This tip cannot be reinforced enough. A deleted comment will server no purpose.

22. Write content for Article directories – Publish content for directories such as eZineArticles, GoArticles or iSnare. In the About Authors area, you can leave a link to your website.

23. Build a Squidoo Page – Its easy and if you have the time to develop it, it can be very authoritative. If you dont theres heaps of services out there to help you out.

24. Join Discussions over at Yahoo! Answers – Providing useful answers, along with a link is an easy way to earn a back-link.

25. Theres also Google Groups – Its almost the same as Yahoo! Answers, but owned by Google.

26. Submit your voice on Digg – First build a solid profile, where you have a network of loyal diggers. If you can hit the Digg front page, you are likely to get linked to by a lot of web-masters.

26. Build on your Twitter profile then link to your site using your Bio Area.

27. Tweet about your posts using Twitter, then request retweets from your followers.

28. Offer a Tweet This Post link on every post your write, this will make Tweeters easier to tweet about your article.

29. Contact your fellow bloggers with a personalized email – asking for an reciprocal link exchange. However, keep this to a minimal and be very selective in who you choose to trade with.

30. Post around on forums asking for reciprocal link exchanges, but yet again be warned on your selection.

31. If you are a part of organizations, clubs or schools – Ask them if they can link to you, because these types of websites are more often than not; authoritative.

32. DONT ask Darren Rowse, ShoeMoney, Matt Cutts or Yahoo, MSN and Google for back-links. Its just a waste of time, especially the last three contacts

Men with screwdrivers and wrenches arent the only people who can embark on do-it-yourself projects. If youre the indoors type with a passion for writing, then why not publish and sell your own books. Given the general attitude toward independent writers, getting a publisher to even look at your work in the first place can be an uphill task on its own. So what do you do with those 400 pages of text you labored over the past year and a half if no one will even look at it? Publish and market it yourself of course! Thats the option of online services such as LuLu, CafePress.com, CreateSpace, Wordclay and many others offer enterprising authors.

The aforementioned sites offer a wide range of services such as editing, illustration and layout design, marketing and distribution and much of the time for free or at very affordable rates, though many offer premium professional services as well. Before registering or signing up for a particular service, be sure to read out the guidelines, terms and the FAQ section very carefully. Some websites, such as LuLu, many deduct a 20 per cent commission on royalties for books sold while other may charge a fixed rate of printing. CreateSpace, as an Amazon.com company, will provide your published paperback with a unique ISBN and market it on Amazon.com as well.

Personal Touch

Most services will guide authors through the process of preparing their manuscripts for digital or paperback formats. On the whole, authors may have to do quite a bit work, in terms of editing, design choices and promotion material, themselves. It is a tedious process, but necessary if you opt for the free package. Fortunately, these sites wont leave you in the lurch. Wordclay, for example, will provide authors with a step-by-step guideline throughout the lifecycle of the publishing process; these sites will also provide template for book design, even offer basic cover artwork for free ( or a professional artist for a fixed amount). Assisted by the features available on the sites, authors will literally go through every process of publishing a book, short of actually printing and distributing copies, and such as, the sole control of the book remains with the authors.

Begin with compelling some basic information and a brief introduction about your book. If you havent already come up with a title, this will steer you towards that. Additionally, it will help you visualize a cover and a layout design and decide the overall appearance of your paperback. Include information such as the books genre, a chapters or contents list, an ISBN if you have one, keywords that will help make your book easier to search for by content and interest to readers, and target market or readership.

Once youve submitted your manuscript, you may need to proofread and edit and make any necessary formatting changes. This step usually includes deciding on the size of margins, page numbering, index, font styles and the sizes for headings, body, and etcetera. You may also have to choose the binding type of the book. It may be necessary to obtain intellectual property copyrights for your works from the appropriate authority in your country. Indeed many of these services advocate the benefit of such a step and they provide the assurance of your intellectual property.

Epilogue

When much of the book is ready and all thats left is to get it out to the public, it will become necessary to decide on the various distribution methods and the prices at which to sell them.
The option may vary but generally, most services will allow authors to distribute their books in paperback form, as CDs or even downloadable digital formats. Authors may even be allowed to set their own payment methods for buyers. Many sites offer the authors to trackback the sales of their books.

In nine out of ten cases, the thought of changing a blogs template or redesigning the overall layout of a blog is easily dismissed. This is not surprising as many blog hosts make a set of pre-designing templates available to their users, that is, the bloggers. These templates, designed by professionals, are often more than enough to suit he purpose of many everyday bloggers. So, why is it, that when it comes to blogs, there are many design issues that constantly arise? And most importantly, why does it seem like a herculean task to load and read many different blogs in the cyberspace?

Before analyzing the aforementioned questions it would be useful to reiterate the different sources of blog templates. First and foremost, while bloggers opt of templates that are available free from their blog hosts; quite a few prefer to tinker with the source code of the template to tweak it to their liking.

Moreover, many websites, such as BlogSkins and Blogger Templates, offer numerous templates that can be downloaded for free. Many freelance designers also maintain blogs featuring different designs with carious themes. Bloggers need only to browse and copy the code of the one they find appealing.

The problem comes up when pre-designed templates are edited by bloggers who have little or no knowledge of HTML code (I also call them noobs). This can have a detrimental effect on the blog layout. Not only do bloggers need to know how to code but they also must have some design sense to be able to change the blogs layout to keep it appearing slightly unappealing to downright garish.

The design and layout of a blog, like any other website in cyberspace, has to be carefully considered. There is no point in choosing a template, modifying colours and column positions and assuming that you have an original and appealing layout on your hands. Veteran bloggers understand this but novices still ignore basic design principle when it comes to designing their blogs.

The following are a few common mistakes that some self-proclaimed blog designers make.

too many widgets

A major problem with a lot of blogs is that bloggers add too many widgets. Granted, there are many interesting blogs and titbits available on the internet and it is indeed extremely hard to resist the temptation of adding them in your blog. It is not necessary when they add no practical functionality and make it harder to load. Widgets are useful when limited to a specific number. The number of widgets needed on a blog depends on its content.

too much text

The extreme opposite of a blog with too many widgets is one that doesnt offer anything other than text entries. A few interesting widgets will live up a blog and keep it from becoming too drab for some readers. Adding a few interactive features is also a good idea, but try not to overdo it. The key is to strike a balance between too much text and too little text.

two sidebars

Very few bloggers have a three-column layout on their blogs and still manage to make it look neat. Two sidebars, filled with widgets, give an extremely cluttered impression and distract readers from the content. Your readers will simple click on the widget and start adding them to their own blogs instead of reading and commenting on what you have posted. Stick to one sidebar it will kelp limit widgets and make your blog seem tidier.

content concerns

Many blogs have entries that are a trial to read. Sometime, the font is extremely minuscule. At other times, the colour scheme leaves a lot to be desired. Ling font colour on a light background or vice versa is very common nuisance. Try testing your blog with a few readers and get their feedback, you will know it is time to revamp your blogs template.

If you quickly need to send a file to a particular folder, drive or program in Windows XP wothout having to click though a series of steps to get there, you can do so by providing more locations to the “Send To ” sub-menu item that appears whenever you right-click on a particular file.

First, click the ‘Start” button and then ‘Run’. Now, type in ’sendto’ and click ‘OK’ button. the ‘Sendto’ folder for your particular username will open. Next, delete any shortcuts that you don’t need and create additional ones as required.
