I recently was working on a website for a client, and needed to make sure that the site works in Internet Explorer 6. Yes, that’s right there are still people out there using version 6. Cross-browser compatibility is a big issue that really wasn’t addressed in IE6. Instead, Microsoft released IE7 and tried to force the Windows XP users to upgrade. Most people did without knowing via Windows Update. Under normal circumstances I would have just uninstalled IE7, and ran IE6, but with Windows SP3 it has disallowed uninstalling IE7. It was very simple to do the following.

Anyway, I came across a IE6 standalone package that runs even when IE7 is installed. It lets you have both IE6 and IE7 open simultaneously. This has been very handy in my line of work. You can download the IE6 Standalone file from here:

I recently came across this plugin for Firefox that lets you have the facebook status feed on the left of your web browser, as well as a toolbar in the top of the browser. It is great for keeping an eye on your Facebook notifications without being distracted by being on the entire website. Here is an example of my Firefox window with the Facebook sidebar that shows the status of my friends.

The Facebook Toolbar for Firefox is a free extension for Firefox that lets you extend your Facebook experience into your everyday browsing.

Note: Firefox pop-up blocker might prevent the download box from opening. To fix this, follow the directions below:

Look at the message at the top of your browser that says “Firefox has prevented this site from asking to install software…” At the far right corner there is an “Options” button.

Click on the “Options” button to see the “Allow Sites” pop-up.

Click “Allow” on the site developers.facebook.com and close the popup.

Click the download button again to install the toolbar.

Written by award-winning author Keir Thomas, Ubuntu Pocket Guide and Reference is a totally unique and concise guide for everyday Ubuntu use. It’s the world’s most popular Ubuntu book, with over half a million readers (and rising!).

Ubuntu is an Open Source operating system. That means that it is Free to download and use. The latest version of Ubuntu is very impressive. Linux for the average home desktop users has come a long way in the last couple of years. You can now do most tasks on the computer completely independent from Microsoft Windows, and still have files that are compatible. Ex: Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc. Anyways, without praising Ubuntu too much more in this post I suggest you check out the Official Ubuntu website to find out more info.

Jing lets you capture your screen then edit the images. You can add text, arrows, etc. directly to the image. You can also record your screen and save as an flash file. This application has come in very handy for me when creating short tutorials on how do use different computer programs. I mainly use the screen capture feature, but have also tested out the recording software.

I came across Jing while attending the SXSW 2009 Tradeshow in Austin, Tx and have loved using it ever since!

TechSmith has created other well know applications, and services. Such as Snagit,Camtasia, Screencast.com, and much more. I recommend that you try out Jing. It is a great product. You can download it from the official Jing Website. Use their free service and if you need to you can go pro for only 14.95 per year. A great price! The pro version lets you record in premium video format (MPEG-4 AVC), upload to more video sharing sites and removes the Jing logo from your screen captures.

I wanted to take the time to talk about a service that I have been using for the past year or two that lets you remotely access several computers via a secure tunnel using logmein.com. It works by installing a small software package on the client’s computer that you are wanting to remotely access. Then you can login to that computer from the web interface at logmein.com. This is a secure service, and you are not hacking anything because the computer owner would need to install the software before the connection can be authenticated. Even after the software is installed the person connecting would need to know the user name and password for the local machine that is being remotely accessed.

Click Here To Check out the Official Logmein.com

I have used this free remote connection service to troubleshoot problems for friends and family. It has also come in handy to check on my desktop computer activities while at the office. As long as the computer that you are trying to login to is powered on and the logmein software is running in the background then you can access it remotely.

You do have the option of upgrading your service if you need more abilities, however I can tell you that for remote access in general this service has been great for me.

Nero has released a free version of their software that enables Windows users to burn CDs and DVDs. I know you are asking what the catch is, so let me clear that up. This version(9.4.12.3) is limited to burning data onto CDs and DVDs.

So, yes there are limits, but I remember the days before open source availability where you had to buy even programs to burn data discs. These days you can also burn data discs directly from your operating system which makes it even easier to get data onto your media of choice.

However, it is great that companies are seeing the advantage of offering certain things for free as well as paid services.

I you are looking for a solid web hosting service I strongly recommend using Media Temple. I have been working with Media Temple servers for years. They have always provided me and my clients with a stable environment to host websites. I have experience with using their Grid Servers, as well as the Dedicated-Virtual Servers. Both have been proven to be equally solid services.

For the average user with a handful of websites I would recommend that you use the (gs) Grid-Service. It is cheap, and also scalable if your needs grow in the future. (gs) is a cluster-based, hosting platform wher there are hundreds of individual servers that work to power your websites, email, etc. It works well because you use what you need when you need it, from the machines that are available. You are pull from as many servers as you need the resources from within your given plan.

The (gs) Grid-Service is 20.00 per month. That might seem a bit steep in today’s economy with cheap hosting around every corner. Let me reassure you that Media Temple is a quality hosting company with solid service, and support.

I also like their iphone application that lets you perform important tasks straight from your iphone. You can restart the server, add/remove email accounts, buy domain names, etc. Directly from you phone.

Like most web hosting companies these days you can also easily install applications onto your domains. There is a one click installer that lets you install things like Wordpress, Drupal, Zencart, and Magento.

I am not getting a referral or commission from this post. I encourage you to check out Media Temple and their services. Wherever you get your hosting from I wish you the best.

I have come to love hulu.com over the past year and a half. For those of you who have not heard of Hulu, it is a website that brings you TV and Movies online. They bring you shows from the major television and networks.

Hulu has recently launched a free desktop application that lets you watch the video content through a application on your desktop. You may be asking yourself why this is beneficial? The best answer to that is that you can use a remote control device to navigate easily through all of the video content of the website. The Hulu Desktop interface is very similar to Apple TV.

I personally use my MacBook Pro, and apple remote to watch via Hulu Desktop. It works great for relaxing and watching tv shows. I have included two screen shots of my Hulu desktop so that you can see it in action.
