Accessing Blocked Gmail from your School or Office

GMail access blocked by your school or office administration?This is the problem many encounter-GMail Blocked.Here is a guide with various tricks to unblock your favorite GMail and enjoy the full mail access at your organization.

1. Using Different URLs

This trick might seem silly,but might work at times.Instead of using the URL gmail.com try using different URLs like mail.google.com,google.com/mail to access your GMail account when GMail is blocked at your school or office. This trick works only if your network/IT administrator has blocked gmail.com alone and left the rest of the domains open (unblocked) as they are not widely known to people. Here is the list of alternative URLs to access GMail

* http://m.gmail.com
* https://gmail.com
* http://google.com/mail
* http://mail.google.com or https://mail.google.com
* http://googlemail.com
2. Access Blocked GMail Using iGoogle

GMail is available as a gadget to iGoogle and you can use this gadget to access GMail. When you access GMail through iGoogle all the communication with the GMail servers is routed through iGoogle servers. So this defeats all the restriction and filters applied by IT administrators in blocking gmail.com domain.

To access GMail through iGoogle,

1. Login to iGoogle using your Google Account
2. Add GMail gadget to iGoogle by clicking this link or by using Add Stuff on screen
3. That’s all. Start accessing your GMail inside iGoogle.

3. Access GMail Using Opera Mini Simulator

Use Opera Mini Browser Online Simulator application to access GMail in a small screen window. Opera Mini is a popular web browser for mobile phones. It allows users to work with live demo of Opera Mini that functions exactly like it would when installed on a handset.

Point your browser to http://www.operamini.com/demo/ and start accessing blocked GMail using the URL m.gmail.com.Reading mails on mobile simulator is definitely not convenient as reading them on a full screen browser computer. But when you need to access your GMail urgently, this trick might be helpful to you.

4. Use Microsoft Outlook Or Other Mail Programs To Access GMail

Using POP3/IMAP Configure your mail clients like Outlook, Live Mail, Lotus Notes to
access GMail using POP3 or IMAP protocol. This trick of accessing GMail when blocked is mostly useful for working professionals as they should be definitely using some mail client for official mail access.

5. Launch GMail from Google Talk

In few organizations only Gmail is blocked but not Google Chat . If that is the case with your organization we can use it to our advantage. Then you can launch GMail from Google Talk application. Sign in to GTalk and click on the envelope icon to launch GMail.

6. Use Your Smart Phones

If you have internet connection on your mobile, you can make use of your mobile phone to access GMail.GMail has an excellent native application for most of the mobiles like iPhone, Nokia, Android, Windows Mobile, etc. The ease at which
you can read and reply to mails through GMail for Mobile is
amazing. It is my favorite mobile application.

7. Use Proxy Web Site To Bypass

Using proxy website to beat censorship is one of the popular ways for unblocking any kind of websites. When we try to access GMail using a web proxy, the web proxy hides our IP address and uses it’s own IP address to load the page.

8. Nothing Working? Then Bribe Your IT Administrator

If none of the above methods worked for you then take help of someone at IT department and get access to GMail. Bribe them Offer small gifts, drinks or something else they like.

Either you can ask them to grant access for your PC or get details of internal proxy server that allow GMail access.

Majority of us reading this article live in a democratic society. Even if you do not, for sure you can realize that monopolies are not a healthy thing for society. A monopoly has a lot of power in business and can stifle its competitors very easily. This is bad for competition and for consumers who find themselves with little choice. Usually, when a monopoly is present, the government tries to step in and open up the market to others.

Microsoft controls 90% of computers around the world. This figure is astonishing and should alarm everyone. How can one company be so dominant? If you look at computers you can see that almost everyone is running Windows. It comes pre-installed on desktops, laptops, netbooks and gadgets. A monopoly destroys competition and stifles innovation. This results in poor products for consumers and higher prices. Bill Gates is one of the richest man in the world and it is amazing to see that his company is able to charge such ridiculous amount of money for his software. The problem is that majority of people are not aware that there are alternatives available. Mac OS and Linux are alternatives to Microsoft Windows.

Mac OS has been gaining market share. It has around 9% of the computer market. It is nice to see that someone else other than Microsoft is becoming wide spread. However, Mac is even a bigger monopoly than Windows. The reasoning behind this is that Mac not only creates its own operating system and software but also the hardware, whereas Windows runs on PCs but the hardware is from various different manufacturers. The rise of Mac computers is nice but also a little alarming. Mac computers are very expensive and the company owns the hardware and the software.

Linux is another great alternative to Windows and Mac OS. A lot of people have not heard about Linux. This is because Linux does not have a lot of money to advertise. Gnu/Linux is a free and amazing operating system. There isn't one specific company or individual who is in control of the whole project. It is developed by individuals, groups and companies. When you explain the concept of Gnu/Linux and that it is completely free, people usually do not believe it. They wonder if this is true or they are looking for some kind of catch. Gnu/Linux comes in variety of flavors. You can choose a free operating system that fits your needs the most. You can do almost anything you would on your Windows or Mac machine. There are thousands of free applications for you to install. If you are an amateur or a professional, Gnu/Linux is right for you.

Wikipedia,the world's best free online knowledge portal now turned into book by Rob Matthews a 22 year old graphic design student from Brighton, Sussex.What is even more interesting is that he compiled it in just 2 weeks!

This book contains hundreds of featured articles,you might wonder if you know the size of the book..it stands 1 ft 7 inches(48cm 28mm)and features as many as 5000 pages.

"I'm comparing the internet Wikipedia to a traditional encyclopedia by putting it in the same format. I wanted to make a comment on how everyone goes to the internet these days for information, yet it is very unreliable compared to what it has replaced," said the 22-year-old student.

As of now this book is not for sale,but they are hoping to put it on the market later.

USB 3.0 support to arrive first on Linux

USB 3.0 specifications were announced in November by Intel and Intel developer Sarah Sharp has been busy coding the linux drivers ever since. The drivers have been ready and have been scheduled to be merged with the Linux mainstream kernel in the version 2.6.31. Traditionally it has always been that Windows is the first OS to get the hardware drivers and the linux geeks tend to reverse engineer or design it based on the specification but this time around tables have been turned over.

The support of Intel to mainstream linux and to the development of open hardware drivers does seem to be a road of change on the part of the hardware manufacturers who have traditionally been windows centric.

The USB 3.0 hardwares have not made to the market yet although NEC is producing 1 million xHCI PCI-Express add-in cards for september release.

Sarah is also working to ensure that these drivers make it to mainstream distributions like Redhat and Ubuntu, according to the post on her blog.

Microsoft Bing search engine a killer attempt on Google is really doing well and attracting users with new features, in the way now Bing has introduced a new feature "enhanced view" with which a binger(is the one who uses bing) can read Wikipedia articles on bing .

Bing.com has now included Wikipedia content directly into its index.Bing search engine not only shows the relevant wikipedia article links but also provides an option "enhanced view" which shows the content of wikipedia articles directly on bing web page. This is really cool feature is it not?

Bing also shows the relevant images with the complete content of wikipedia articles. So, move on to bing and read the articles directly instead of opening wikipedia in new tab :)

So, if you are interested to make Bing as default search engine in Firefox or Chrome then follow the below steps.

FireFox users:
You can do this by installing a small Firefox addon Bing 20090531, add this addon to firefox and you are done.

Chrome users:
Open Chrome and goto Settings > Options. Now navigate to Basics > Default search and click manage button. In the new window click add button and enter: Name - Bing, Keyword - Bing, URL - http://www.bing.com/search?q=%s Then click OK and set Bing as default search engine.

How To Skip Login Screen In Windows Vista

It is very annoying for a lone or single user of a computer to be asked for his/her password every time he/she switches on PC. Even worse is the fact that this is an issue that all windows vista users face. While a lot of people know how to tackle this problem, here’s the solution for those who don’t.

Steps to Disable log in screen in Windows Vista:

1. Open the Start Menu

2. Search for netplwiz, open it by giving permission

3. Once you have opened it uncheck (click on the box with the tick in the middle) the box, next to which ‘Users must give username and password to use this computer‘ will be written.

4. Now click ‘Apply‘, you will be asked for default username and password to which the computer should login. Enter the required username and password.

That’s it, now just restart your computer and you will see that it logs into Windows Vista automatically without any delay!

In order to get started with conversion of text to audio, you need to follow the steps below

1.) Point your browser to Zamzar.

2.) Next follow the guided screen to select your files to convert, choose the format for the converted file. Here you need to select mp3.

3.) Enter your email address and press Convert.

Zamzar doesnt require any download or installation.

Google Wave to "redefine" E-mail communication

As Google promised to reveal something interesting on the second day of the Google I/O conference, and they announced Google Wave- the next evolution of email.Google wave a new in-browser communication and collaboration tool which was created by the two programmers jens and Lars Rasmussen who were behind Google maps.

Jens and Lars with his team of five people of sydney, Australia a prototype.They started this project two years ago and they are ready to show their product later this year.

Google new real time communication platform Google Wave is a next generation hybrid mailing and IM service.The interesting feature is that the ability to replay conversations because it records the entire sequence of communication, character by character. Because of this, discussions are also live in Google Wave, you will see your friends type character-by-character.

You can drag and drop your attachments from your desktop and it loads the file and immediately to anyone who are in conversation with.Google Wave is also embeddable, so you can embed Google Wave conversations on any blog.

It looks like normal Gmail Inbox service but more focused on your Contacts and User interface which will make users more convenient.As for conversations ,Well! its a bit different that usual as you can add thoughts to your conversations and the communication is really shared ,you can even go for conference too.

The features don't stop here are few more:

* Real-time: In most instances, you can see what someone else is typing, character-by-character.

* Embeddability: Waves can be embedded on any blog or website.

* Applications and Extensions: Just like a Facebook (Facebook reviews) application or an iGoogle gadget, developers can build their own apps within waves. They can be anything from bots to complex real-time games.

* Wiki functionality: Anything written within a Google Wave can be edited by anyone else, because all conversations within the platform are shared. Thus, you can correct information, append information, or add your own commentary within a developing conversation.

* Open source: The Google Wave code will be open source, to foster innovation and adoption amongst developers.

* Playback: You can playback any part of the wave to see what was said.

* Natural language: Google Wave can autocorrect your spelling, even going as far as knowing the difference between similar words, like “been” and “bean.” It can also auto-translate on-the-fly.

* Drag-and-drop file sharing: No attachments; just drag your file and drop it inside Google Wave and everyone will have access.

It’s also important to note Wave is very much a web app, built entirely in JavaScript and with several HTML 5 elements for modern browsers which support the nascent spec.

There were several other great extensions and robots that were demonstrated at google I/o. Here’s just a few of the coolest ones:

* Debuggy: A robot that responds with debugging information about each event on a wave

* Stocky: Automatically detects stock quotes and provides real-time stock information

* Bloggy: Pushes wave content to a blog

* Maps: Allows for collaboration on a Google map to plan events

* Bidder: You can turn a Wave into your own eBay

* Ratings: All Wave participants can rate and review items - then it will show you a tally of the results.

Play online games in Gtalk ( gmail based)

Now you have fun by playing online games while chatting with your friends in Gtlak(Gmail based).Currently this application is only available for web based Google Talk sandbox application and will soon be available in Gtalk application installed on your computer.

Here is the simple procedure to activate this cool feature :

1. Open Google Talk Sandbox (use Firefox, nogo in IE!).
2. Click on any friend name in your Gtalk buddy list.
3. Click Options > Start Applications
4. Then enter URL of game gadget and start playing.

Rock, Paper, Scissors

This is a simple application to let you play rochambeau with your friends. This demonstrates a very simple use of the gadgets.sharedstate API.

Yahoo 360 is no more available says Yahoo

There were rumors around closing of Yahoo 360( social networking site run by Yahoo, more over is a blogging kind of service ) down from nov 2007 but its now going to be truly official.They've set a date - July 13 is the day that Yahoo 360 will be no more.

Earlier this year yahoo announced closing of Yahoo Briefcase service and yahoo geocities and now its yahoo 360 's turn.Now yahoo is requesting its users to switch to their new profiles on or before july 13th.

I got a mail from yahoo team which says

Dear Yahoo! 360° customer,

To read this in Vietnamese, please use the link at the bottom of the message.

We will be officially closing Yahoo! 360° on July 13, 2009, to focus our efforts on making your new profile on Yahoo! the place where you connect with the people who matter to you most. As a result, you will need to move your 360° information to your new profile before this date. After July 12, 2009, your content on Yahoo! 360° will no longer be accessible. Here are some details to guide you through this transition.

What you need to move to your new profile
Your 360° information will not be automatically transferred to your new profile on Yahoo!. To move your profile photo, nickname, and any personal status messages, you'll need to first save or download them before July 13, 2009. Once you've saved this information, you can later upload it to your new profile. Be sure to head over to your new profile soon so you can make it look just the way you want.
