Samsung Galaxy S III Complete Features, Specs and Design

Move over smartphones, the superphone is here. Launched with pomp, the Galaxy S III is miles ahead of the current crop of smartphones with its truly innovative features. Samsung projects the Galaxy S III as a smart and intuitively simple phone designed for humans and inspired by nature.

Samsung Galaxy S III Looks

The new Samsung Galaxy S III, looks-wise, seems to be a morphed version of all earlier Galaxy phones released last year, resembling the Nexus in shape and contour. A thin bezel and a relatively slim, 8.6mm thick design makes the large, 4.8 inch sized S III relatively easy to hold. It is light in weight at 133 grams. As for the finish, the phone has a glossy plastic coat on the front face and the rear battery cover. The Pebble Blue variant has an edge over the Marble White kin. The edge of the device is made up of a glossy plastic rim to give it a distinctive look. Though plasticky, it feels solid and exudes quality.

There is a home button as usual but slightly toned down in looks. Capacitive buttons sit on both sides of the home button, lighting up and then disappearing. The rear portion is made up of a camera, flash and loudspeaker. The 8MP rear camera does not seem to be any different than that on the Galaxy S II and Galaxy Note but it does have enhanced software support in the form of dual still and video capture, face tagging, face identification and tracking.

Samsung Galaxy S III Display Screen

The display is a huge 4.8 inch HD super AMOLED display but without the plus indicating that despite the 306 ppi density, pixelation is visible but not so much as to distract. Gorilla Glass 2 protects the panel and the display has comfortable viewing angles. One cannot fault Samsung on the display front.

Samsung Galaxy S III Processor

The Samsung Galaxy S III carries the 1.4 GHz quad-core Exynos processor working in tandem with a GPU claimed to be 65 percent faster than the Mali400 found on the S II. SunSpider browser score is a little less than 1500 ms which means it is better than HTC’s. Switching between apps and surfing is a breeze and the pinch to zoom feature works effortlessly.

Samsung Galaxy S III Battery and Connections

A nice thing is that this Smartphone comes with a 2100 mAh battery with a wireless charging option soon to be made available in the form of an accessory. A micro SD slot is available paving the way for memory expansion. Right out of the box the S III offers variants with 16 GB, 32 GB and 64 GB of internal storage. There is Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi Direct, DLNA and MHL compatible micro USB ports plus a headphone socket. The S III sports an NFC chip connected to the battery unit.

Samsung Galaxy S III Software

This is the crux of the S III as Samsung has put in special efforts on the software front. The TouchWiz user interface overlays Android 4.0 ICS, incorporating new gesture functionalities and specific apps. At the base of the screen users will find five icons besides the app drawer. The home screen is all of four inches width. Liquid nature is the theme with a water ripple animation effect as a user swipes the screen to unlock it and listens to the unique water droplet sound. Users also have access to wallpapers with the seasons as the theme and a new background news feed smart wallpaper.

Samsung Galaxy S III Keyboard

A larger screen means more real estate and the built in keyboard is simply perfect and ergonomic with larger keys. Menus and icons follow Samsung’s proprietary TouchWiz styling and there is a lock screen app shortcut. Enable it through settings and then tap and hold the screen or rotate it horizontally and the camera is activated through accelerometers and sensors in the device.

The same new sensors and accelerometers enable a new calling function. Suppose a user is texting someone and wants to phone him, all he has to do is raise the phone to his ear and presto, that number is dialed. Contextual intelligence also works the Samsung way through the Smart Stay feature. The front camera detects if the user is reading the screen, detecting eye movements. If he is, the display stays on. A small eye icon appears on the notification bar when the camera is observing your face. Smart Alert displays missed calls and notifications when the user picks up the phone, activated by the in-built accelerometer.

Your Command is My Wish: Voice Commands

Samsung has introduced S Voice that enables user’s voice commands on the phone. Voice recognition needs a data connection since authentication is processed online.

NFC & WiFi—S Beam

Samsung’s S Beam feature makes use of the NFC chip and WiFi to help users share even large sized files between two such devices in a jiffy, doing away with the need for data connection. The NFC data transfer rate is 400 KBps for smaller files while with WiFi Direct enabled, the speed rocketed to 300 MBps for fast transfer of larger media files. It takes only an instant to transfer a 10 Mb video file.

AllShare Play is a new feature on the S III permitting users to display the phone’s content on a large screen TV. AllShare Cast goes in a slightly different direction, allowing users to replicate the phone’s display on the large screen for gaming and similar purposes. The linkage is through WiFi Direct to a compatible TV.

Pop-Up Play

Pop up Play is another new and revolutionary feature on smartphones that has debuted on the S III, making full use of the powerful processor. Users can play a video file in a small pop up window while working on other apps or browsing. The pop-up window is one-sixth the normal screen size and can be moved around anywhere on the display.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 is already popular with gamers. Activision is now all set to build on its popularity and release the next in the Call of Duty title during the latter half of 2012. Cyberspace is full of leaks and one of the leak whispers with substance in it that the next version is definitely around the corner. For instance, two pre-order cards have surfaced at Target, at least confirming that the latest iteration will be entitled Call of duty: Black Ops 2. The same source reveals the release likely to be on 13 November 2012 if we go by the pre-order cards. This follows on the heels of a trailer released by Activision stating that a new release of Call of duty is on its way. The release was slated to take place during the NBA Playoffs on 1st May and that more information would be forthcoming the next day. One can even say with a certain degree of certainty that the title will be Call of duty: Black Ops 2.

Call of Duty series has proved to be a gold mine for Activision and a source of never ending gameplay for gamers. Activision was naturally expected to release an enhanced version to meet gamers’ demands and cash in on its huge popularity. Black Ops 2 is expected to maintain the time tested formula of the Call of Duty Series.

How can we effectively keep are desktop clean? Here are six methods you may want to consider:

-First, you can always use a specified desktop-cleaning program:

1. Deskcretery. This free application can be run manually or automatically whenever your desktop starts getting too cluttered. It goes through all the items on the desktop and creates archived (and searchable) databases that stay out of your way yet are easy to access. The program allows users to exclude key files from the archive process. The result? Your desktop includes only excluded files and one Deskcretery archive folder.

2. Clean Desktop. This app, created for Vista and Windows 7, looks for desktop items that have not been used in the previous month. It then provides the user a list of these items with the options of deleting them, cleaning them, or restoring them.

3. Zum. A highly-reviewed application launcher, Zum can create a database of your videos, games, web browser, and much more. For our purposes, however, it is especially useful for its ability to move items from your desktop to its database. This insures that your desktop is cleaner and that, in the future, your applications remain more organized.

-But if you don’t want to go through the effort of downloading new software, here are a few other tips and tricks for insuring that your desktop stays clean:

4. Create a junk folder. You can create your own version of Deskcretery by putting a generic folder on your desktop that can contain anything you don’t want openly displayed. Title this folder “Desktop II” or “Other Items” or something of that nature, and then drag any icon to it when you’re looking to cut down on clutter.

5. Take advantage of useful gadgets and widgets. Many of us have gadgets on our desktops that display the weather, the news, or a snippet view of our email. Such gadgets, when useful, keep us from neglecting our desktops by forcing us to regularly return to the screen. When we do, we are more likely to clean up the desktop on a routine basis.

6. Make your background exciting. On a similar note, using interesting, exciting, and rotating desktop background pictures can compel you to return to the desktop on a consistent basis. On doing so you will hopefully tidy things up in the process.

These are six of the best ways through which you can make a concerted effort to keep your desktop clean. While a cluttered desktop certainly isn’t the end of the world, our computing experience can ultimately be a more organized and more appealing one when our home screen can be kept under control.
