Apple’s green data centers show that it has made real progress in its commitment to lead the way to a clean energy future. Apple’s increased level of disclosure about its energy sources helps customers know that their iCloud is powered by clean energy sources, not coal. As it keeps growing the cloud, Apple still has major roadblocks to meeting its 100 per cent clean energy commitment in North Carolina, where renewable energy policies are under siege and electric utility Duke Energy is intent on blocking wind and solar energy from entering the grid.

How Apple’s 100% Green Data Centers Work?

In its annual report Apple has described in detail how their data centers, the centers in charge of Apple’s online services, can claim to operate exclusively with renewable energy. The project consists of the main data center in Maiden, North Carolina, which includes the completion of an expanse of solar panels by 20 megawatts by the end of the year. However, Data centers require the so called basic energy which is a minimum amount of energy to ensure at any time and emergency reserves in the event of failure of the mains supply.

“Our investments are paying off. We’ve already achieved 100 percent renewable energy at all of our data centers, at our facilities in Austin, Elk Grove, Cork, and Munich, and at our Infinite Loop campus in Cupertino,” Apple states.

Fuel Cells and Bio-gas

To obtain these resources Apple has installed a set of 10 megawatt fuel cells, the largest central not associated with an electric company. Bloom Energy’s fuel cells convert natural gas into electricity. Since Apple is buying into biogas credits from another company, it can be argued that data centers operate with renewable sources. Biogas is the gas that is captured from landfills or from animal wastes. So in a sense you could say Apple Data Center does the Fuel Cell Industry a huge favor.

Similarly, Apple is buying renewable energy from markets located in the vicinity of its other data centers, such as wind network in Oregon and California. According to its environmental report the priority is to generate renewable energy on site but where this is not possible the company provides to purchase from other suppliers.

Use of Eco-friendly Technology

Noteworthy is the mix of energy sources provided at the Apple data center in Reno, Nevada. The center makes extensive use of solar energy but Apple also plans to exploit geothermal resources in Nevada which could constitute the basic energy. This combination could lead to a data center car powered by renewable energy.

As the Eco-friendliness of renewable energy has secured the bulk of their attention, it should be noted that Apple has invested approximately the same amount of resources to ensure the best possible energy efficiency of their relays. The complex of Maiden, for example, is equipped with massive tanks of cold water installed to allow the system to reduce the use of chillers during the peak demand and thus reduce the energy consumption of the center. The complex also boasts an impressive management system of ventilation to minimize energy consumption at times when you cannot use natural ventilation. In a data center cooling is usually half of the total energy consumption.

These efforts are a direct response to critics brought forth by Greenpeace last year when the nonprofit accused Apple of using non-renewable energy sources to power its data centers.

In an interview with Bloomberg, the chief financial officer of Apple, Peter Oppenheimer said that these efforts will lead to concepts from which other businesses and communities will benefit.

Many gamers surely remember the PS3’s monstrous $599 price tag, and while the console has had many top selling video games and features, the role out of software and development of features was slow to begin. Currently, there’s no official word on how much gamers are going to have to drop on a brand new PS4 come this fall, but according to Japan’s Asahi News, the price of PlayStation 4 (PS4) might run about $400 USD — which, while more affordable than its predecessor, is still a big investment for even the most avid of gamers. PS4 Hardware

Technically-speaking, Sony hasn’t shown the world too much about the PS4’s hardware, but we do know that these things apply:

The console itself has not been shown, but based on the information that Sony has released, it’s apparent that the architecture of the console is PC-like, which will make it much easier to develop games for the system.

PS4 Controller

What Sony has shown us in physical form is the PS4 controller. The DuelShock 4 controller, while it is visually a descendent of its predecessors, is a totally new animal—in a good way. The PS4 controller offers a host of features not available in previous iterations, including a “Share” button and a touch pad. The “Share” button is Sony’s way of integrating social media into the new console. One push of the “Share” button and players can upload gameplay footage and more via PS4’s new social interactions feature. The new touch pad allows players to interact with the console in a similar fashion to how the PS Vita works.

PS4 Online Features

There are a few leaps and bounds in terms of online features from the PS3 to the PS4, and some are very, very intriguing. Sony’s gone on record saying that they’ve teamed with Ustream to create a feature that will give players multicasting capabilities. This means that players will be able to schedule a set time for the PS4 to live stream their gameplay to anyone they invite to watch. Another interesting feature that’s been talked about is the integration of cloud-based technology. If successful, cloud tech could potentially allow software from PS1-PS3 to be played on just about any device, which would more than make up for PS4’s lack of backwards compatibility.

The Verdict

Just the idea of the cloud-based backwards compatibility should be enough to sell any potential buyer (since it’ll open up Sony’s entire game library to generations of gamers), but if that’s not enough, a couple of awesome new controller features and vastly upgrade tech specs should win over even the starkest of naysayers. It’s clear that PlayStation 4 will definitely be an improvement on the already-fantastic PS3—and the best part is, we don’t even know the half of it yet. At, potentially, $400, the PS4 is a steal.

For instance, the climax of the movie “Argo” takes place at the airport in Tehran. Six Americans, having hidden in Iran for three months, are taking this one chance to get out of a country that’s embroiled in revolution and anger. Their cover is that they’re part of a science-fiction film crew; their guide is Tony Mendez, a C.I.A. operative. Is it true to the real-life story?

Firstly, you have to understand that Argo isn’t trying to be a documentary. It’s entertainment (good entertainment, at that) and works primarily as a political thriller about rescuing unfortunate American diplomats from a rather unsavory situation in Iran. The British and Canadian governments have issued statements detailing their displeasure at the changes made to the story in the film. In the film, one of the characters claims that they were ‘turned away’ by the British embassy. This is partly true – the Brits warned them that the Iranian soldiers were en route to look for them there – but in the film, this is made out as if the Brits just shooed them away.

The Canadian government has gripes with the film because it undermines the amount of effort the Canadian ambassador went through to hide them there, instead lauding the CIA (and Hollywood) with being the good guys who masterminded everything.

Does any of this really matter?

Yes and no. Whether it matters or not is disputed. It doesn’t matter if you see it as just a Hollywood thriller that was made purely for entertainment. However, it does matter in the sense that this will be the most widely watched version of the events that transpired.

It also matters because most of the Iranians portrayed in the movie are done so unfairly. Some would argue that the Iranian people are portrayed in a rather worrying light, with implications that might be quite damaging, given relations between the two countries right now.

Should you watch it?

Absolutely. Historical inaccuracies notwithstanding, it’s a solid thriller with some great performances, particularly from Mr Affleck himself. It’s very suspenseful from start to finish (even though you know how it‘s going to end). If anything, it’ll give you an excuse to find out more about the 1979 hostage crisis, and read up about a part of history you didn’t know about before.

However, at the end of the day, sticking closer to the facts might have resulted in an Argo movie that’s less accessible and watchable for your average moviegoer; though, on the hand, also one more thoughtful and even-handed than your average cinematic sermon from Hollywood. The path Affleck took played to his strengths as a storyteller, more so than a different strategy would have. Maybe somewhere down the road, as Affleck continues to gain confidence (not to mention, credibility) as a director, he will strive to break further away from convention than he has so far.

Accidental Deletion: This is the most realistic scenario and whether it’s caused by your own screw up or someone else’s, it can wreak havoc for your data unless you have the proper data back-up plan.
Hard Drive Crash/Virus: I hope you’ve never had to go through the pain of recovering important data from a crashed hard drive, but I have and it’s no fun.
Theft: What happens if someone takes your computer, and that nice looking backup drive that’s attached to it? With data thieves becoming smarter day by day, today, they don’t even need physical access to your computer to steal your data. All they will  need is your computer connected to the internet and they can sabotage whatever information they needed.
Fire: Fire spells total loss to pretty much everything in your home; will your data survive?
Water Damage/Flooding: Between water and fire I’m not sure what’s more likely to happen, but around here we get hail and definitely have the potential for flooding

Data Security Contingency Plan

Your company’s data contingency plan should start with securing its data. In modern society all companies maintain critical information on computers. As such, some of the below security tips are a prerequisite prior to storing any data on a hard drive.

1. Identify what sensitive information you have, what you use it for and where it resides. Translation: inventory your company’s potentially sensitive information (e.g., customer credit card information) and document on which computers, servers and laptops it’s stored.

2. Isolate/segregate sensitive data. Keep sensitive information on the fewest number of computers or servers, and be sure to segregate it from the rest of your data and network if possible. “The fewer copies of data you have, the easier it is to protect,” said Jon Heimerl, the director of strategic security for Solutionary, a security services company that helps companies of all sizes design and manage better security programs and detect and prevent security events.

3. Encrypt sensitive data. According to Heimerl, encryption becomes even more important when your data is mobile. “There are many options to encrypt data via applications, databases or via security suites that can run, for instance, on a laptop. If you can encrypt the data, chances are good that, even in the event of a breach, the information will be safe from ultimate compromise. The HITECH Act, for instance, says you must report breaches of unsecured data. Encrypted data is considered secure.”

4. Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) or a similarly secure connection for receiving or transmitting credit card information and other sensitive financial data. Using a secure, encrypted connection such as SSL protects sensitive data while it is in transit across the Internet.

Data Recovery Contingency Plan

The second, if not just as important and critical as data security is the back-up plan to support the recovery of lost data. Because the actions you take upon experiencing a hard drive failure is critical to the recovery and salvaging of your company’s’ data:

DO NOT…

- DO NOT open your hard drive and expose the media!!! There is nothing inside that needs the attention of a common user or do-it-yourselfer. Only a qualified hard drive data recovery engineer in a certified clean room environment should ever open a drive.
- DO NOT try to swap circuit boards on modern drives. There may be firmware/system area conflict issues that may cause major problems.
- DO NOT put your drive in the freezer and then try to spin it up. It is possible that moisture has condensed on the media surfaces. This WILL cause head contact if it has and will destroy the drive.
- DO NOT listen to your friends or continue to look for home remedies on the net such as the one mentioned above, seek professional help if you value the lost data.
- DO NOT continue to power cycle a clicking or non-responsive drive; it’s not going work for you and may make the drive unrecoverable. If it should come “ready” by some chance, the possibility of it loading the OS for you, “just one more time”, is a million to one.
- DO NOT install recovery software on the same drive/partition that you’re lost files are on, you will overwrite them with the installation.
- DO NOT run the recovery CD/DVD furnished with your PC. Most OEM helpdesk techs don’t care about your data; they only want the hardware back on line.

As long as you adhere to the above do not’s, the folks at Salvage data suggest you do the following prior to contacting the tech doctors:

DO…

- DO try to slave your drive into a working system to check for readiness and file system integrity. You may be able to copy your data with no problem if only the OS is corrupt or if there is a hardware issue with the original host computer.
- DO try an undelete demo from the net to see if what you’re looking for is available for recovery, if so, purchase the tool.
- DO seek professional help if you’re not 110% sure of what you’re doing. You can learn basic recovery procedures on an expendable system.
- DO back up your data early and often. It’s not if, it’s when.
