TattooNOW: Nick Baxter Art show in NYC May 26th

NEW YORK, NY (May 26th, 2012)- Last Rites Gallery presents The Apostasy, new works by Nick Baxter, in what will be his second solo show at the gallery.

Nick Baxter's technically demanding painting style dwells somewhere in between traditional sharp-focus still life and modern photorealist styles, while bringing in elements of symbolism and surrealism. His subject matter tends to center around close-ups of skin and visceral, bloody macro-scapes, in exploration of what it means to be human- to have a unique consciousness inhabiting a vessel of flesh and blood.

“These images represent an inquiry into the medicalization of modern society. In our time, the specialized knowledge of an elite group has been canonized and made gospel, resulting in the learned helplessness of an increasingly ill populace. Surgeons and scientists alike have become the new priests of a material-industrial age, in which living organisms seem to be regarded as no more than an assemblage of mechanical parts.

Cultural edicts handed down have portrayed our bodies as flawed, as if still soiled by original sin and in need of salvation. So we prostrate before possessors of a seemingly divine knowledge, an authority built on the upturned ruins of the common sense that modern man has forgotten. With nature gutted and wild instinct thwarted, a remaining paper-thin veil of scientific belief is all that divides story and reality. It is mere faith that separates benevolence from malevolence.

Shrouded in mystery, alien hands descend from the darkness. Otherworldly appendages of the vicars of the corporal levy power upon trembling flesh. Sworn to heal, but with the ability to harm, they are like iron fists in latex gloves.

Science is the new religion, Big Pharma is the church, the doctors are priests, pills our Holy Communion, and sickness is our only hope of salvation when diseases are dollar signs that fortify the edifice.

So this is my apostasy, my leap for sovereignty from the dungeon of a castle made of glass and steel sterility. A journey back towards wholeness in The Garden that made me. A breach of faith in hopes that I may rejoin the wild world and be healed in its immeasurable and immutable wisdom.”

Tattoo Fact of the Day:
A tattoo is a form of body modification, made by inserting indelible ink into the dermis layer of the skin to change the pigment. The first written reference to the word, "tattoo" (or Samoan "Tatau") appears in the journal of Joseph Banks, the naturalist aboard Captain Cook's ship the HMS Endeavour: "I shall now mention the way they mark themselves indelibly, each of them is so marked by their humor or disposition".
Tattooing has been practiced for centuries in many cultures spread throughout the world. The Ainu, an indigenous people of Japan, traditionally had facial tattoos. Today, one can find Berbers of Tamazgha (North Africa), Maori of New Zealand, Hausa people of Northern Nigeria, Arabic people in East-Turkey and Atayal of Taiwan with facial tattoos. Tattooing was widespread among Polynesians and among certain tribal groups in Taiwan, Philippines, Borneo, Mentawai Islands, Africa, North America, South America, Mesoamerica, Europe, Japan, Cambodia, New Zealand and Micronesia. Indeed, the island of Great Britain takes its name from tattooing, with Britons translating as 'people of the designs' and the Picts, who originally inhabited the northern part of Britain, which literally means 'the painted people'. British people remain the most tattooed in Europe. Despite some taboos surrounding tattooing, the art continues to be popular in many parts of the world

So we have an exciting announcement to make-- Shane will be joining the PowerLine crew full time come July! He's been with us since October doing two days a week, but come July he'll be much more available for your tattoo needs ;) Check out his portfolio here, or stop by the shop! Our apprentice NATE ZAP is almost ready . he has put in lots of time and i can assure you his apprenticeship was not easy. he is well trained and a great addition to the team.

Lifes been a non stop whirlwind or drawing and tattoos since I got home from Ausrtralia. Ive been extemely busy at the shop and started a few new large scale projects Im haveing alot of fun with. I still have one opening left at the Ink n Iron tattoo Conventiob in Long Beach CA. for the afternoon/evening of Friday June 8th. After Ink n Iron my next show will be the Pacific Ink & Art Expo in Honalulu Hawaii August 3rd 4th and 5th. I am excepting appointments for the Pacific Ink & Art Expo now, email me if your interested. I thought Id share a few in progress tattoos I started in the last couple weeks just for the hell of it.....

Hi everyone!

so it's been a couple of weeks since my last post... many apologies... so here's the update! HELL CITY KILLUMBUS WAS AN ABSOLUTE BLAST!!!! I was given the huge honor of being able to tattoo literally inbetween two of the most influencial artists for my career, CAESAR THE HUN AND JEFF F$*%ING GOGUE!!! it was truly a humbling and insightful experience. Since being back i've started and continued a few new projects that i can't wait to post!

Travis Litke Tattoos: My Very Earnest Mother Just Served Us Nachos,...Pluto Tattoo

Here we see Travis Litke in his natural habitat. Doing a science-based Tattoo! It brings me great joy everytime I think about the demotion of the planet Pluto and what caused it; the discovery of the planetoid Eris. Eris is the Greek Goddess of Chaos, and what she caused by the discovery of Her Planet sent a Chaotic shockwave through the scientific community and kindergarden classes everywhere! If Eris cant be considered a planet, then neither can Pluto! ..... beautiful if you ask me! In this solar system tattoo we kept with the nine planet theory, and I call it; "My Very Earnest Mother Just Served Us Nachos,...Pluto". It Begins at the shoulder cap with the Sun, then proceeds just past her elbow until we reach Pluto. We can only hope that my client will eventually concede and have Planet Eris added later! (relevant: Eris is the patron goddess of Sacred Chao Tattooing And Piercing. Travis has the words "HAIL ERIS" tattooed across his knucks.
