First-time home buyers and investors waded into the housing market looking for deals in May, pushing sales of existing homes higher again in South Hampton Roads, according to a report released Monday.

Real Estate Information Network Inc. released data showing that 963 homes sold last month, up 14.5 percent from April but 3.6 percent below the number sold in May 2008.

The number of homes sold last month was down by its narrowest margin in more than year, offering a glimmer of hope that the local housing market might be reaching a bottom.

The “Mermaids on Parade” consists of several mermaid statues placed all around the city of Norfolk. The mermaid project started with the generosity and creativity of Peter and Bess Decker, conceptualizing the mermaid project in order to bring light to the artistic talent in the region.

In Norfolk you can find a plethora of uniquely designed mermaids, including “Hope,” who is a bandaged mermaid featuring Norfolk’s city skyline on her tail. “Hope” had been damaged by vandals at her previous home by the Norfolk Airport, and she was ultimately redesigned with band-aids and a cast and relocated to the Lake Taylor Hospital, also in Norfolk. There are also more abstract mermaids, such as a mirror mosaic mermaid and a Norfolk Admirals hockey team themed mermaid.

The Norfolk “Mermaids on Parade” can be a fun activity for both young and old. Maps are provided on the Norfolk “Mermaids on Parade” website and include two versions. The first version you can walk the streets of downtown Norfolk and locate up to 16 mermaids, each mermaid conveniently marked on the map. The second map includes ranges throughout the entire city of Norfolk indicating where possible mermaids can be located.

Sometimes the reward is smaller. A seller was giving everyone who viewed a condo a Starbuck's gift card.
