I can’t post much yet but I thought I’d show a few behind the scenes of a recent TV commercial  I directed and it’s companion print ads on location in Puerto Rico.  It’s for an American consumer product (with non disclosure agreements, I can’t reveal any details until the pieces come out.  But I promise to update when I can).  I was there for two weeks casting first in Miami, then Puerto Rico.  The weather turned out fantastic.  We had scenes in cars, rain scenes with some great water effects, and did a studio set with a set build.  For you tech heads, we shot with the Red Epic in normal speed and slo mo. The local crew was top notch.  I felt like I was shooting in New York or LA with the level of skill I was seeing.  The agency and clients were a pleasure to work with (I mean that; I didn’t have to type it, you know).  It was a fun warm location shoot after dealing with our rather cool spring in New York.  Stay tuned.  I’ve seen the rough cut and I’m looking forward to showing it all  (Photos by Francisco Ferrer).

This hotel is a pleasure to shoot. I love to wander the halls with my camera looking for details and angles to make an image. I usually do a scout that way then come back and re-light or re-dress if needed. I find that many times my initial reactions to the room are the right ones. But it’s important to make note of that; the many options that later present themselves may dull your “gut” feeling from the first day. Initial impressions are everything.

I got a chance to visit and include a wonderful couple in my Artist Series, Ivan Navarro and Courtney Smith. They have their own small building in Brooklyn where they are able to manufacture and design their art.  Ivan has a loft above Courtney’s space so that can work seperately but they periodlically get together to critique each others work.

Over the weekend, I shot a music video for Late Cambrian‘s Song “Ryan Gosling.”  I did the cover of their new EP, Social Season and we got into a discussion about doing another music video.  Within weeks we are off and running.  We shot this one at St. Vitus in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, a heavy metal bar/performance space.  Ideal location.  We had a great group of dancers and extras for this one as well.  Hectic shooting schedule but that’s the norm with music videos. Special thanks to Yang Jiang who did the production stills and my great camera crew:  Dallas, Caty and Callan.

Here’s some more from the artist series. I was upstate photographing painter Lisa Sanditz. She works out of a studio building that is behind her house. She paints these beautiful color pieces.  I also shot her in the house with her partner, Tim Davis.  They are into their cats. There is a giant paper mache cat on her porch, leftovers from a party.

I had the pleasure of capturing Fine Art Photographer/Filmmaker/Artist and Teacher Tim Davis on the prowl in the woods in upstate New York for my artists book project. It is always interesting photographing another photographer as they are very aware of what you are shooting. In this situation, Tim was very into this area of woods and roams deep into looking for areas of interest.  He projects his imagery on the wall of his house to inspect it at a large size.

Had the pleasure of shooting the band Late Cambrian for their new EP, Social Season.  Here’s some shots from the shoot.  Shot on Location at the Trash Bar in Brooklyn.

As I continue my Artist Series, I visited the studio of Adam Cvijanovic.  He was working a large mural for a show in Europe.  The work was a progression of scenes.  The master mural was the base, then he was adding a second, third, and fourth layer to the piece over time.  With my interest in video as well, I think it would make an interesting time lapse sequence when finished.  Here’s the link to his page at his gallery.
