Gosh it's been while since I struck my keyboard to blog. But unfortunately, or fortunately depending upon your view, my ego will keep getting jobs! It's very tiresome in some respects which means there's not much time or space, for blogging, poetry or digital art.

I suppose I coming to the time when I have to make a decision do I keep my alter-ego, my nome de plume which has seen me through some exceedingly dark times; and not so long ago. Or do I merge the two and step through the mirror into full broad day light. It still doesn't solve the problem of time.

Ego or Alter ego, there never seems to be enough time and what time there is just goes so quickly.

I like what I was able to become via Gwei Mui so I think I'll hang onto her for a little while yet -

As my Grandmother said to me. "You keep all that's true, all that's yorn, in here (the heart) and in here (the head). No one can take that away. Everything else (face, body) it's all nonsense.

Long Time No Blog!

Yes I know I have been extremely tardy! But my alter-ego has been very busy. So blogging has been pushed onto the back-burner.

But it's a sunny Sunday morning the flat is quiet and I have a few peaceful moments before the family stirs - what else was I going to do?

There is nothing so bizarre as life. Eighteen months ago I had been thrown on the disused pile. Struggling to get by on state benefits, sending off CV after CV to try and get a normal 9-5 job and then I had my Damascus moment. A friend of mine puts me up for a theatre show, I audition, I get the part, I sign off and I have never looked back. Yes it was scary after an eight year gap. But what a rush. From there I took part in two other theatre productions and am just about to do my fourth. Or should I say my alter ego is about to participate in a fourth production.

I and my alter-ego have written a one woman play. And yes - gulp - it's being produced in a very limited run as part of a bigger program at a central London fringe venue. I'm also making an independent documentary and have three other writing projects in the very early embryonic stages of development. Oh yes I was taken on as a freelancer by a new media company so I now have the equivalent of a day job

Money was tight, still is but money ain't everything. I'm doing what I trained to do I'm learning new skills, I'm writing, I'm producing and I am living!

So if my blogging drops of you'll know that I am busy, but I will always come back to blog.

The News Of The World having survivied 168 years will cease to be on Sunday 10th 2011. Finally brought down by the Hacking scandal that refused to be buried try as they might. A botched Police investigation, was not as they had hoped the end.

Rebekah Brooks still in power whilst Clive Goodman and Andy Coulson are arrested - that doesn't seem fair to me. Hundreds of workers made redundant (the majority of which were not working at the NOTW when the hacking was taking place) put onto the unemployment line - yet the "captain" of the ship who should take responsibility for the actions of her staff claims ignorance and the fact that she was not at work when some of these hacks were put in place. Doesn't see fair to me, but hey what do I know I'm just your average person.

Does this herald the end of the Murdoch Empire as we know it? We shall have to wait and see. Will this mean that the press will be more forcefully regulated; again we will have to wait and see

How will the Cameron administration weather this storm - having enjoyed the reverse situation when Labour were incumbent and watched a variety of politicians walking the plank for lot less what will the PM do? He's already, reluctantly had to concede to a Judge led inquiry - the show goes on and this is by no means the end.

So I received my first invite as a blogger to go and see a theatre show and write a review. How exciting!
I went, I saw, my jaw dropped to the floor, I went home. I felt angry, insulted, depressed, deflated, defeated and worthless!

With all that has been going on here in the UK; especially recently with some shameful racist and prejudiced presentations of the Chinese, you'd think that a theatre - the theatre that was responsible for Joan Littlewood's famous eastend company, with the immigrant populations inhabitting this part of London, the theatre would have produced a work that was free of blatant stereotypical racist characterisations.

The show rums for a numb-buming three hours. The songs are way to long; on one occasion an audience member was able to get up leave the auditorium go to the loo, return and the same song was still being sung. Actors who can't be heard are an anathema to me. It's a contradiction in terms. Actors should know how to ennnciate and project, basic techinical requirements. Adding insult to injury if you can't be heard and you're using a mic or radio mic - appalling!

Repeatious and unecesary physical actions such as cast members pulling their eyes back to "make them appear Chinese" even the Chinese members of cast doing this, shuffling feet, saying Chink and Ching Chong. I found unnecesary and offensive. I know that it wasn't meant to be. It was meant to be ironic. However the work itself, the production just was not strong enough to be able to accomplish that feet.The central character Eddi Wu, is a confused twenty something. Eddi doesn't know, who or what he is sexually, socially or culturally. The one thing that he is sure about is his passion for Tom Jones. The music, the life, all that is Tom Jones. Problem is that Eddi Wu is not likeable as a character. I just didn't care one way or the other whether he failed or succeeded. His ambivilence towards his sexuality, was only matched by my ambivilence to the character.

When I go to a musical I want to see slick musical numbers, strong musical contents, memorable lyrics and committment to those big numbers. Sadly I got none of that. Here was a musical that had somehow slipped through the net. It needed more development, some judicious prunning and a longer and deeper conversation about using such inflamatory, derogatory and racist terms like Chink and Ching Chong. And why is that still in this day and age many people across all ethnic sectors don't consider such language as either offenisve or racist. Well let me tell you I was offended. In the same way the an Afro-Caribbean would be offened if you labelled them a N**ger, or South Asian would be offend if you called them a P*i. Take it from the mouth of a British-Chinese person I find it deeply offensive.

Yes the audience laughed. They found certain bits hysterical. Such as when two cast member performed China Man's Chance, shuffling across the stage, hands held toghether singing Ching, Chong. The thing was the audience were not laughing with, they were laughing at the Chinese. They were laughing at me.

I felt extrmely uncomfortable and even more invisible than usually. Black, South Asians and Caucasiuans laughing at the Chinese acccent and the inference that we are stupid, laughing at the idea that the Chinese only work in Takeaways or sell dodgly DVDs.
This was not what I had been expecting. Yet another opportunity squandered.

Deadlines, Admin, New Ventures & A Scoial Life?

If anyone had sat me down and said, "Hey, this is the way your life is going to go for the next few months," I would have guffawed in their face and walked away, chuckling to myself like an inmate from St.Clemments (a now defunct local mental institution).

Having gone from unemployed, seemingly unemployable in the conventional sector, completely forgotten about in the creative and artistic sector (is it any wonder after an absence of eight years) heading for the social and waged scrap heap looking at an endless minimum wage 9-5 to scrape by; I go back into acting, appear in three different theatre productions on the trot. I'm now seriously, I mean seriously writing my one woman play which will get some kind of an airing all being well in November. To top that all am now working closely with the co-artistic director of a British-Chinese theatre company eager and hungry to produce and perform high quality drama content. But yes I can top that, I'm now the official negotiator for that company with regarding the possible production in some shape or form of a or a couple of lays by an award winning American playwright!

Plus, plus I've actually started to have a social life! Been to see more theatre in the last month than I have inliterally ages, if it wasn't baby-sitting issues, it was financial issues, or time off work just didn't square with the evnt we wnated to go to. I've seen four plays in as many weeks - how amazing is that. Managed to have dinner out too!

What's going on?

Where did this all come from and more to the point why has it taken so bl**dy long - lol!

Seriously the time was right, I'd grown up, I was lucky and past experience is not going to waste and is being utilised.

To all those who have supported me, put up [with me, encouraged me and just been there for me I thank you.

To all the people who have ridiculed, blocked, passed negative judgement, who have thwarted, who have scuppered, who have presented biased, prejudicial or racist attitude towards me - I'm still here, in spite of everything, I'm still working, still trying, still "shouting" and getting stronger and more confident with every new and exciting connection I forge.

I hang my head in shame...

Greetings Takeaway aficionados - yes I'm still here.Just about to finish he theatres job. Then I will have space to breath, write, draw and generally relax for a wee while. I have missed blogging and must really investigate the apps available to do mobile blogging.

I'm also really aware of my lack of poetic content - but there just haven't been the hours in the day! I know, I've said it before, I tweeted, I've posted. I should aim to write at least one new piece per month. So it's a date then... here we go

Another Drs. waiting room. Another medical appointment to discuss the last round of medical tests. Life at the moment seems to be one long round of Hospital appointments, blood tests, MRIs, scans and x-rays! In between which I have to fit in my life. Is this what they mean by getting old?

Well if it is I don't much care for it. My ankles are crumbling away, my arthritis is getting worse (I could have told the medics that!)

My thyroid is now playing with me and has decided to over produce so my dosage levels of medical thyroxin have to be jiggled about with...

In between hospital and GP surgery, life goes on. Oh roll on the proper summer time

Deja Vu but not in a good way

Yesterday I took the journey to St Thomas hospital. Almost seven years ago, to the month, I made that journey to resus to find my husband in a "poorly" state. Then followed a nightmare ten weeks of limbo not knowing whether death would greet as I returned to the ICU. Never having been one to like hospitals I now actively loath the environment. Yet I seem to be spending much time in these institutions. The one sure sign that I am getting older. Though my mind refuses to accept this, my body cannot escape the ravages of natural time and age as bones disintegrates and age lays it's hand firmly on my shoulder.

Yesterday it was me as the principal having to have MRIs on both ankles to determine the extent of the avascular necrosis in my right ankle, the onset in my left and arthritis in both.

Moving forward the options are surgery, surgery or surgery.

Full Circle

Last Tuesday I was sitting as a customer on one of the comfy sofas in the Artisan coffee come Italian Pizza place that I used to be a manager of before they made me redundant back in Novermber 2008.

I'm a customer now and taking full advantege of the updated decore, free WiFi and still excellently made and knocked back cappucino.

I'm was wiating for my partner in collaboration - another adult Hong Kong adoptee who I met about twelve days ago. We hit it off immediately and are now in full swing kicking ideas about looking for the one that will land us some funding.

We entered a competion looking for "new talent" from the Asian community particiularly "East Asian's as we are so under-represented

I feel both optimistic and pessemistic at the same time as I suspect that the usual suspects will end up with the funding - we shall see....

Collaboration

Surfing the net I came across an old worn out black and white photgraph taken by a dutch photographer in the twenties of a small Chinese boy lighting a small firecracker.

Ten days ago I met up with a fellow HK adoptee, rom the same orphange in Hong Kong. To a cut a long story short we are now collaborating on a short film project. We've just sumitted an idea for a scheme that awards funding.

So fingers crossed we will hear in eight days whether we have been short-listed. And then the dance begins, further short-listing, development workshop and then up to six projects could receive funding... watch this space

I have two weeks to learn my lines for the next theatre show I'm going to be in, before rehearsals start. A little inususal but as we only have two weeks then being "off book" is a necessity. I personally don't like doing things this way, but it's a two hander and time is precious.

I still can't over how my life has turned around. It means that I can't blog as often as I'd like and my writing is firmly being focuseed towards prose. But I'm not complaining :)
