Last month we told you that you shouldn’t be taking your propane tanks to one of those propane exchange places. It is beleived that by doing that you could be getting a propane tank that is not 100% filled. (If you want the full details check out our post: Don’t Get Cheated! Refill Instead of Exchanging Propane Tanks)

Now I just learned there could be a possible class action lawsuit against propane suppliers like Blue Rhino and Amerigas for potentially “short filling” propane tanks. What’s short filling? See the video below.

The Law Offices of Girard Gibbs is currently conducting an investigation involving “short-fill” propane tank refills. According to the Associated Press, propane suppliers like Blue Rhino and Amerigas have quietly reduced the amount of propane included in refilled tanks while charging the same price. Consumers have complained that they were unaware that they were receiving less propane for the same price.

If you believe that you purchased a “short-filled” propane refill, or if you would like to learn more about the propane refill investigation, fill out the form on Girard Gibbs Web site or call toll-free (866) 981-4800.

When you think of concert tailgating, what musical artists do you think of? For me, Jimmy Buffett and Kenny Chesney immediately leap to mind as the gold standard artists who encourage pre-concert tailgating. But what about Brooks & Dunn? Tailgating? Really?

Apparently the folks at Toyota think that country music fans are big tailgaters and have come out with The Midnight Rider Tundra Tailgater by Brooks & Dunn. The truck is a tribute to the legendary country music duo’s career that has spanned over 20 years.

No matter what you opinion on the inspiration, when parked the truck converts into a killer tailgating machine. By sliding out the tailgate which exposes a Grill N Chill cooking area, the pull-out Grill N Chill features a cooking space with counter tops, infrared barbecue, beverage tap and ice chest. An electronically operated tonneau cover lifts to reveal a bed-installed 42-inch flat screen TV and sound system by Kicker. The sound system features a dual subwoofer system and a separate amp, four two-way speakers with tweeters and deparate crossovers and dual two-channel amps with separate equalizers and speaker control units. (They fail to mention if the sound system can only play Brooks & Dunn music.) There are more details on the truck including the types of wheels, custom door handles, leather seats, etc. Instead of listing them all here, you can check out Toyota’s Pressroom web page and check them out for yourself if interested.

Conveniently Toyota fails to mention a price for this fully customized Midnight Rider Tundra Tailgater which leads me to assume that it will be quite pricey. Then again, when it comes to price, if you have to ask you probably can’t afford it.

The family was great in allowing Dad and I to have our Thanksgiving day dinner in the parking lot with our buddies. This year it will be home with the family for the holiday, but that won’t stop us from having a post-Thanksgiving day feast the following Sunday (November 29).

Below are some recipes we tried last year (each member of our tailgating group brought a dish), ones we will be experimenting with this year, and some random others I came across on the Internet. As you can see the common theme is cooking with some booze!

- Turbaconducken: A chicken stuffed in duck stuffed in a turkey, all wrapped in bacon. I’ve never tried it, but it sounds damn tasty (well, if your body can take all the fat!).

- Beer-Can Chicken: It’s an oldie, but still a goodie. We actually went with this recipe in place of turkey last year since it was easier to be prepare and transport to the parking lot.

- Bake Beans with Bourbon: I am sure there is a more elaborate recipe for this side dish, but we went with a simple can of Bush Baked Beans mixed with 1/2 cup of Bourbon.

- Rum-Glazed Carrots: To make this one easier go with the pre-cut or baby carrots. If you don’t like raisins, well just skip them!

- Margarita Wings: Something a little different to do with your wings. Makes you think of summer even if you are all bundled up on a cold November afternoon. My friend’s wife will be bringing this to this year’s tailgate.

- Tipsy Sweet Potatoes: This is a family favorite that we have been serving at the Thanksgiving Day table for years. The name of the recipe is dead-on!

- Irish Cream Mousse Pie: When this fan thinks dessert and alcohol it has to be Bailey’s Irish Cream. And what Thanksgiving feast would be complete without a pie!

Hopefully one of these recipes makes its way to your tailgating or dinner table. But too many of these items could result in you missing the “Black Friday” early morning sales! Happy Thanksgiving…2+ weeks early!

I came across a video that is more of a testimonial on how well the advertising campaign has been going for Bud Light. The thing that really caught my eye was at around the 0:58 second mark. I think you may recognize something rather familiar in there.

Today I came across a video which appears to be an attempt at promoting a new type of beer pong table. The tables are called “Super Beer Pong Tables” (I know, how original) and the main difference is that the rack of cups spins and moves back and forth along the table. To see it in action you have to sit through this 6 minute video. There are strippers from DeJa Vu in bikinis in the video so it is not a complete waste of your time. If you want to see how the tables operate, feel free to skip to the 3:00 minute mark .

I took the liberty to head over to their website, superbeerpongtable.com to see if there was more information on these things. Here is what I was able to gather.

The tables can be played while adhering to standard tournament beer pong rules where the cups are placed in the provided rack and placed on the back edge of the table. With the flick of an electric switch the table becomes ready to play “SUPER beer pong”. That is where the cups will spin and move back and forth along a center line in the middle of the table. You will use a standard 10 cup rack like the traditional tables utilize but the cups themselves will rotate in place and move closer and further away.

When assembled, the tables are 8′ x 2′ which is the standardized size requirements for tournament style beer pong tables. As you saw in the video, the tables are foldable and collapsable for ease of transport. Super Beer Pong Tables come equipped with an A/C adapter (A/C power outlet not included) in order to power the “Cup Mover”. Dimensions and specs of the tables are:

• Approximately 38 pounds
• 4 ft. x 2 ft. x 1 ft. (collapsed)
• 8 ft. x 2 ft. x 30 in. (expanded and ready for play)

The major drawback to Super Beer Pong Tables while tailgating would have to be the need for electrical power to make the “Cup Mover” rotate and slide back and forth. The website failed to mention how many watts the motors that make the cups move pull on the website but I would assume it can’t be too much. If you have an electric generator it should not be an issue to bring these tables tailgating. Depending on how much juice they pull, maybe a 12-volt power inverter might do the trick.

Another drawback I saw was the price. Because these aren’t your average folding beer pong tables and have a few more bells and whistles, you would imagine the price would be higher. The top of the line Super Beer Pong Table that includes rotation and linear motion will run you $800. The website does not say if that price includes shipping or they will tack that on at the end. If you wanted the low end table, the Electric Blue themed table which just rotates the cups on both sides will cost you $299.99. Again, no mention of shipping charges on that product.

If your tailgate has a form of electricity and a way to power up one of these, Super Beer Pong Tables might put a new spin on the old game of beer pong. Get more information from their official website, superbeerpongtable.com.

I’ve snuck candy and drinks into a movie theater. But any sense of shame is gone the moment the lights go out and I hear sounds every where of ziplock bags, cans of soda, and bags of chips opening. Everyone else is doing it so why not follow, enjoy the fun, and save a few bucks. (yes if everyone else jumped off the bridge I would too…cause there has to be a good reason for jumping!)

Carrying over the “sneaky” theme to the stadium, on occasion I have even taken a bottle of water or two into the stadium in my sock. Again, no big deal, just saving myself a few bucks for an extra beer.

Last weekend I took the logical next step…OK, my wife took the next step for us. As a joke-type birthday gift my wife’s co-workers bought her the Winerack. Despite the joke aspect of the gift it really wasn’t a bad idea. She likes to drink, and on occasion she will go to a Phillies or Eagles game with me.

With the recent success of the home teams we were in a good mood so we thought let’s add to the excitement and bring some Jack into the game with us. And go figure the silly thing actually worked! Brilliant!

Because the Winerack looked natural it easily passed the security frisk. The wife said it was comfortable to wear, feeling similar to a sports bra. And once inside the stadium the liquor was still good and we avoided the eye of the ushers. And to the fans around us my wife was the coolest of the cool.

So if your signigicant other is a tailgater I highly recommend the Winerack (and this recommendation is without any compensation, but if the company wants to send me a free Beerbelly I am all for it!). And if you are a follower of Seinfeld it can even be used as a Bro or Manssiere for us guys.

Randomness:

For all you Philadelphia fans who suffered through the transit strike this week there is good news from the city’s failures. A strike means additional time to tailgate this weekend for the Cowboys game…gates are opening early!

Editors Note: There is an alternative to the Beer Belly mentioned above. It is called the Booze Belly and is much more affordable and is basically the same thing. You can get one directly from TailgatingIdeas.com HERE.

When it comes to playing corhole while tailgating there isn’t much difference in the actual game play other than the distances you choose to play from and the quality and craftsmanship of the equipment you play on. Most cornhole boards are 2′ x 4′ and have a hole 6 inches in diameter. Pretty standard operating equipment for cornhole and because of that uniformity, some tailgaters might be looking for something a little more unique. Enter Bag Toss 2 made by Vorticy Sports, Inc. and available via BagToss.com

As you can see in the above photo, Bag Toss makes two kinds of cornhole boards. The classic cornhole board is just as you might expect it to be; a single hole, corhole board. Bag Toss 2 is just like a regular corhole board however the slot at the top makes this corhole board unique.

As you can see, the slot is located above the corhole and is 6 inches wide. In order to make scoring that zone more challenging, it is only 2 1/2 inches high. Since it is smaller and more challenging to score into the slot, it is valued at 5 points. In addition to the smaller size another factor that makes it more challenging to score on the slot is the location placed above the cornhole. Players known as “sliders” who use the smooth surface of the cornhole board to hit first and then slide the bag into the hole will find the slot more of a challenge. The distance between the cornhole and the slot does not allow for sliding, hence, scoring on the slot will need to be an “air mail” shot.

Cornhole boards made by Bag Toss come in two types of finishes, Heritage and Natural. The Natural finish is several clear coats over the bare wood. A Heritage finish involves staining the wood and then applying clear coats. The Heritage finish costs a bit more due to the extra step of staining. The stain work is not furniture quality, but it still looks really good. Each finish can be painted on for those that want to customize their own cornhole board.

In addition to the two types of finishes, you can also choose the right size for your cornholing needs. Bag Toss cornhole boards come in two different sizes, Traditional and Tailgate. The traditional is your standard, regulation tournament size cornhole board measuring 4′ x 2′. The Tailgate size measures 3′ x 2′ for easier portability and storage to and from the tailgating lot. Both sizes of Bag Toss cornhole boards are made with high quality 1/2″ birch plywood. That stuff is not cheap and the edges of the boards are finger joints that allow for bi-directional fastening which adds strength. A full grown man can stand on these boards without breaking them. A center stiffener is added to minimize deck bounce (actually there are three center stiffeners on the tournament series). The stand is cool because it stows into the board for easy storage and transportation. It also holds the bags and is a nice place to put stuff when playing.

Any set of cornhole boards from Bag Toss comes with eight bags made with high quality and durable duck cloth. The insides consist of primarily recycled plastic pellets. These pellets are truly remarkable as they have the right feel of natural corn but are nearly indestructible. Best of all, you can wash these bags and they won’t rot like corn-filled bags.

Depending on the finish you choose, cornhole boards from Bag Toss will run you in the neighborhood of $139 to $159 depending on if you choose the tailgate size or the traditional size. If you prefer the darker stained Heritage look, you’ll need to add $19 to the previously mentioned prices. Also, those prices are consistent no matter if you choose the Bag Toss Classic or the Bag Toss 2 which includes the 5 point slot above the cornhole.

A few days ago I asked for tailgaters to help me out with an upcoming article I am writing for Tailgater Monthly Magazine. I am still looking for a few tailgaters to weigh in and give their opinions on the new tailgating rules and restrictions that seem to be popping up more and more these days.

In response to my request I received an email from Chris, a loyal TailgatingIdeas.com reader, who offered to help out. Unfortunately for the purposes of the article, he tailgates regularly at places that have not yet implemented any new rules or tailgating restrictions. (Lucky for him) Just because I can’t really use his comments for the purpose of the upcoming article did not mean he did not have anything valuable to contribute.

His email expressed the way I feel tailgaters should behave and I am hopeful you agree. Take a look at what Chris wrote and see if you don’t concur.

Dave,

I currently tailgate for Georgia Tech on Saturdays and the Atlanta Falcons on Sundays. Although neither teams have imposed restrictions to tailgating efforts or times, I do feel strongly about the negative light tailgating has been given over the past few years. I feel as if I am the bad guy.

I begin planning each tailgate days in advanced, pack the car the night before, prepare breakfast, lunch, and sometimes dinners to be grilled/smoked days before, etc. The effort I put in is to not only celebrate the act of friendship and tailgating, but also in honor of my teams. While drinks are of course served, my gate patrons never cause problems in or out of the games. We clean up after ourselves, carry first aid kits and fire extinguishers in case of emergency, and always have a DD. It usually takes us about an hour to set up and hour to take down each tailgate (being in a downtown scenario this has to happen before the game begins or we won’t have anything left to tailgate with).

To remove this experience from the game or hinder the time we spend doing it would absolutely kill my love for football and my desire to even attend games. It is a part of football. Without tailgating, I would stay at home and watch football on TV. We show up each Saturday at 7 am to ensure that we get our spot. We drink responsibly throughout the day and always have a great, responsible time. Feel free to email me if you want to ask me an questions or discuss.

I think we need more tailgaters out there like Chris. Thanks for the email and the insight Chris. You are one of the many tailgaters that do it right because you “get it”.
