MMO Champion is a huge site with a lot of WoW-related resources, but we’re looking at a very specific one today, the Raid Composition tool.  Using this can help you understand your raid group’s strengths and weaknesses, as well as possibly make changes to improve it.

The mechanics are simple: drag a class/spec into the raid groups, and the chart on the right will tell you exactly which buffs you do and don’t have.  Green checkmarks represent “assured” buffs (Ret pallies with replenishment, for example) while a yellow squiggly line indicates that a buff could be present, but won’t always be.  Kings, Might, BoW are all yellow for the same ret pally, since he can only provide one.  Another often-overlooked aspect of raid composition is at the bottom right, which tells you how many potential disease, magic, curse, and poison removers are in the group, as well as a few other useful bits of info.

This can also be a valuable tool for potential or current raid leaders, since a good raid leader knows what buffs each class can or should provide, and can use that knowledge to maximize the group’s potential (or to identify lazy players who forget to buff).  As a l33t hunter, for example, I don’t speak the language of Faceroll, so I need to research the abilities of the lesser classes (i.e. everyone else).

To see this in action, let’s take a look at my guild’s regular 10M, which looks something like this:

…and is lacking comprehensive caster buffs.  As such, the physical dps in our group really shines. This usually isn’t a problem, but we do have casters that sub in every now and then, and their dps suffers because of this.  25M raids should never have such problems, but maximizing a 10M can be hard if certain buffs are not present.  And this can help you identify those inadequacies, or just play around with groups to see how buffed they are.  I have yet to find a 10M that can cover every single buff, even counting drums/scrolls for things like Kings, Gift, Fort, etc.  Extra points if anyone else can.

The passion you all showed as fans kept us going and helped grow Project Lore to be a place for World of Warcraft players to enjoy the camaraderie of each other outside of the game. We’ve gone through a lot of changes in our time working on Project Lore. From the first crazy run through Hellfire Ramparts to our adventure through Naxxramas, from iZ3D to Squarespace, we’ve had a blast on this journey together. The optional zone buff in the Icecrown Citadel is now available and will make the instance easier for whoever wants to use it. The buff currently increases total health, healing done and damage dealt by 5% but higher versions are in-game and will probably be activated later. 5%-30%

On a sidenote, the amount of limited attempts for end-wing bosses has been increased to 35.
Note: talking to faction leader removes it.. if you remove it you can’t get it back for that run (unless you reset if you haven’t been saved)

• In the Lord Marrowgar encounters, the boss will no longer reset threat after a bone storm and will now wait a small amount of time before attacking at the end of a bone storm.
• In the Deathbringer Saurfang encounters, the boss is now less likely to cast Blood Nova on targets affected by Mark of the Fallen Champion.
• In both normal and heroic versions of the 10 player Rotface encounter, the mutated infection ability will not be cast as quickly while the fight progresses.
• In the 10- and 25-player heroic Festergut encounters, the malleable goo ability should no longer target pets.
• In the Valithria Dreamwalker encounters, the duration of Emerald Vigor and Twisted Nightmares were slightly increased.
  In the Sindragosa encounters, the duration of the instability debuff was slightly reduced.

Right before Blizzard gave us a big update on Cataclysm stats and system changes, we were thinking about the expansion as we took part in the weekly Shared Topic. Rilandune from Heroically Random! had suggested we talk about our personal plans for Cataclysm and Pheadra from DI the Tank had proposed discussing the changes to the game we’d like to see.

I’m going to start my stint here with an add-on that has had a profound impact on my recent gaming.  Our game lags for one of two primary reasons.  One is graphics: our system can’t handle the load, be it in a populated city, 25M raid, or massive AoE zerg (I’m looking at you, Phase 2 Onyxia).  There’s no easy fix for this, provided your in-game graphics settings are suitably low.  You’re computer just needs an upgrade, be it RAM, processing speed, graphics card, etc.  The second reason for lag is latency, which is either a slow response time from your computer, the server, or both.  And this we CAN fix, unless of course you’re just using lag as an excuse:

Basically many computers are like your guild’s DK: functioning well enough to play, but still doing their job wrong.  The site itself puts the process sufficiently into layman’s terms, with an amusing dialogue in which your PC is played by what I can only assume is a loyal but stupid clone of the golden retriever from the movie Up.  But in a nutshell, it changes the way your PC sends and receives information so that it is more conducive to gaming.  This is not a WoW-exclusive addon, affects your entire computer, and does not need to go in your WoW addon folder.

That isn’t to say it changes other aspects of your computing; I have yet to notice any difference with my regular internet connection, but have seen huge strides in WoW.  What once used to be an excellent latency rate for me (100-ish, spiking to well into the thousands if I was unlucky) is now just a myth.  I have yet to see my latency above 100 in the couple months I’ve had it installed, it’s routinely between 20 and 50, and the infamous "lag spike" is a thing of the past.

So if your latency is regularly colored red, do yourself a favor and try this out.  The worst I’ve heard from friends and guildies who use it is that they see no change in gameplay.  But for some, myself included, it’s been a godsend.

Be sure to keep tuning in, either to continue standing in awe of my writing prowess, or to cry as someone less hunter-ish takes over full-time.

We’ve had the new Dungeon Finder for about two months now and there are plenty of horror stories floating around. There’s tanks and healers feeling abused, not queuing, people feeling generally disenchanted about the whole thing and a whole lot of mean nasties flying around in the dungeon system.

Where’s the love? I know there have to be good positive warm and fuzzy experiences going on in the random dungeons as well. Have you helped or been helped by a total stranger in the random dungeon systems? How did you help? Let’s share some stories of those positive, feel good, experiences. Don’t have any stories? Cataclysm Prologue – Gnomeregan and the Echo Isles
Patch 3.3.3 introduced a lot of data for the prologue, or at least a part of it. If you checked the site when the patch was first release you already know that players will be able to recapture Gnomeregan (Alliance) and the Echo Isles (Horde).

Quest Tracking Feature

The Quest Tracking Objectives Frame can now be widened via the Interface Options menu.
The short description for a tracked quest is now displayed on the Map in the quest pane.
Quest items in a player’s inventory which begin quests now each have an exclamation point overlaid on their icons to make them more easily identifiable.
If a players selects Track Low Level Quests, the quest objectives will no longer appear dim on the Map, nor will the exclamation points appear dim over NPC heads or on the Mini-Map.
Objectives Frame

The Objectives Frame will now list the number of quests displayed at the top. In addition, players can now click on the word “Objectives” at the top of the Objectives Frame for a list of sorting and filtering options which will determine how quests are ordered. Any quests or achievements filtered or sorted out of the Objectives Frame are still being tracked and are simply hidden in this frame.

Sorting
Sort by most difficult quests.
Sort by least difficult quests.
Sort by quests closest in proximity to the player (this will automatically update as players travel around).
Manual sorting: This allows players to Right-Click on each quest name in the Objectives Frame and determine in what order they should be placed.

Filtering

Toggle achievement tracking.
Toggle completed quest tracking.
Toggle tracking quest objectives in other zones.

Players can now Shift + Click on a quest objective or check the Track Quest box on the Map to track a quest in the Objectives Frame

Auction House

If the Auction House on a realm is unavailable for any reason, an alert will pop up informing players who attempt to access it.
Players can now Right-Click to place an item in the Auction frame.
Entire stacks of a specific item type can be placed in the Auction frame and several options have been added for choosing how to list auctions.

Stack Size: If a stack of items has been added to the Auction frame, players can select the size of the stack they wish to sell. If an invalid stack size is entered (i.e. a stack of 21 Saronite Ore), the Create Auction button will be grayed out.
Number of Stacks: In addition to selecting the size of a stack, players can select how many stacks of an item they wish to sell (i.e. if a player has a total of 43 Saronite Ore in the Auction frame, they can choose to list 2 stacks of 20, 4 stacks of 10, 8 stacks of 5, 43 stacks of 1, etc. If the number and amount of stacks listed results in a remainder, the left-over items will be placed back in the player’s bags automatically).
Stack Size and Number of Stacks are linked mathematically so that altering the variables of one may automatically calculate the amount of the other (i.e. if a player puts 20 in the Stack Size field and 43 Saronite Ore are in the Auction frame, the Number of Stacks field will change to 2 by default. If a player only wishes to sell one stack of 20 Saronite Ore, the Number of Stacks field can be manually changed to 1).
Price: Players can now choose to input the price of an item Per Stack or Per Item by selecting either option from a pull-down. If Per Item is selected and a player is selling a stack of that item, the Auction House will multiply the selected Per Item price by the amount of that item in the stack. If Per Stack is selected, the player can enter the total price he or she wishes to charge for each stack of that item being listed.
Auction Post Completion Bar: If multiple items or stacks of items are being listed at once by a player, a Posting completion bar will appear showing the total progress of each individual auction being listed once the Create Auction button is selected. The greater the number of individual listings being made in a single press of the Create Auction button, the longer this process will take. Players can still browse the Auction House while the Posting completion bar is in progress, but moving around will interrupt the progress, similar to moving while attempting to create multiple bandages with First Aid. Just as with creating bandages, auctions that were completed prior to the character moving or otherwise canceling the action will successfully be listed.

Some answers of the same questions from both ppl..

Q. The 3.3.3 PTR included some unreleased ‘event’ details (no spoilers). Should we expect to see that event in the lifetime of 3.3.3?
A. Something leaked in the patch? That never happens! The plan is for these events to go live sometime before Cataclysm ships. We don’t have an exact time yet, but we would like players to have a good month or two to play through these events to help build the back story for what is going to happen in Cataclysm.

Q. Are hunters likely to see more stable slots for their pets in the future? With the current variety of pets, the amount they have right now seems too small.
A. Arm-waving here, but a model I would love to see is dramatically expanded slots (so you can store all those Spirit Beasts) but have a smaller number of “active” pets, like 3. You could summon an active pet from anywhere in the world, when outside of combat. You would swap a pet from active to the stable at the Stable Masters.

Q. Are there any plans to implement cross-faction/cross-realm mail(for BoA gear and such)?
A. We have cross-faction mail for BoA items now; cross-realm is a work in progress, but we hope to have it done “soon.”

News: Blizzard: 70% of new WoW players don’t get past level 10 (link)
Only a third of new players to World of Warcraft make it past level 10 – the tipping point at which the majority of gamers will then go on to become dedicated players – making the title’s ongoing success in the marketplace five years after launch all the more impressive.

Blizzard expects the third expansion pack for its massively multiplayer sensation World of Warcraft to arrive in the “back half of 2010,” according to CEO Mike Morhaime.
Speaking to investors during an Activision Blizzard conference call, Morhaime added that the game has a “global subscribership of approximately 11.5M subscribers.”

The following is what we knew prior to getting the patch notes above.
There is a nice interview of Tom Chilton (Kalgan) on Gameinformer.com. We learn a couple of new things here, including an almost-confirmed upcoming single-boss raid encounter: The Ruby Sanctum in the Chamber of Aspects under the Wyrmrest Temple.

The Dungeon Finder tool might be extended “at the very least” to 10-person raids at some point in the future.
The next addition to raid content will probably be a single-boss encounter in the Ruby Sanctum of the Chamber of Aspects. “It’s a little too early to have a lot of details on that, but I wouldn’t characterize it as a huge chunk of content. [...] I think of it more as an extension of patch 3.3.”

Gear, talents, tactics, etc. If you don’t, what frustrations of your class make it such a painful challenge, and what do you do to extend your up time or make it count?

Moving on to the specific issue at hand in this thread, the discussion is the old shadow/frost spec that turned the death knight into a much more ranged caster, generating runic power quickly and then converting that runic power into Death Coils at range. It wasn’t intended for the class. They have no problem with Death Coil itself being a popular attack, as long as the death knight has to put an effort into staying in melee with its attendant disadvantages to do so.
“The DK that runs around and does nothing but Icy Touch or Howling Blast or Death Coil feels like a rogue who forgoes combo points and openers and everything just to spam Fan of Knives and nothing else.”

It turns out that good trinkets are hard to find for a reason: Blizzard like it that way. Bornakk at the official World of Warcraft forums wrote today(link):
“Trinkets are really the one item (weapons are to a lesser extent) that we use to try and capture that old slot machine feel from the classic Molten Core days. Yes, completely random loot with huge loot tables can be frustrating but we are pretty far from being completely random these days. Trinkets however are still somewhat random, they can be hard to acquire, and there is often a lot of competition for them.”

Invincible as a 25-man heroic mode reward only

Blizzard loves 10-person content guilds just as much as we love 25-person content guilds. The reason for having this mount in the 25-person Lich King encounter has to do with maintaining the proper distribution of such awesomeness. If it were available in the 10-person encounter as well, it may become too prolific and lose some of its initial unique qualities. (link)

How Limited Attempts Work:

• The limited attempts applies only to the following bosses: Professor Putricide, Blood Queen Lana’thel, Sindragosa, and the Lich King.
• The limited attempts are shared between these bosses, so if there are 15 attempts total and your group wipes 5 times on Professor Putricide, you will only have 10 attempts for the remaining encounters.
• The limited attempts has increased this week to 15 and will increase to 20 when the Frostwing Hall opens and more will be added in the weeks following that.

The Interview

Here are Beli Flinthammer’s answers. Be sure to listen to the podcast for Ringo’s take on these same questions.

Is it still true that Ringo writes most of the adventures and Beli does the artwork?

I’m not as prolific as Ringo (our motivations for writing a blog entry are different, as detailed in a later question), but I do put up something every once in a while. And yes, I do all the artwork for the same reason why husbands want wives to make their sandwiches for them, “It just tastes better when you make it!”

Which comes first, the images or the story?
——————————————-
The story mainly comes first. Images are meant to compliment or add to the story. Sometimes there will be an image with no-story attached — those are the ones that reflect a moment in time and in those situations, a picture is worth a thousand words.

What tools are you using to capture the images?
————————————————
Three tools I use:
1. WowModelViewer (www.wowmodelviewer.org) for the characters
2. The game (for background screenshots)
3. Photoshop CS (for editing)

The process:

I make the character in the Modelviewer and cycle through the standard in-game animations until I find something that could imply the character is doing something else. One example is the human male “strangulate” animation. If I pause it and angle it just right, the male could easily look like he’s adjusting a bow-tie. Or be about to rip off his shirt Superman-style.

I hit “print screen” to capture the pose, paste it into a file in Photoshop, and add a background from the game behind it. I may or may not add more props (extra characters or objects from the game to add to the story). Then I put finishing touches by adding shadows to the characters so they look like they fit in the background better. That’s basically it.

Do you lay out the image in your head and then stage it? or does it just “happen”?

I start out with an idea in my head, but rarely end with the original vision I had. This is mostly due to the limitations of the program not providing the pose I wanted, thus forcing me to find a different way to interpret the scene. The most recent example I can provide is that I originally wanted to have our dwarven son sitting on Greatfather
Winter’s lap, either asking for or being given a toy. However, the human boy model (which I edit/shrink down to dwarven proportions) did not have a sitting animation available. I was unable to create the scene I wanted, but I did see the crouching animation (where the boy is picking something off the ground) and thought I could pass that off as him looking at presents. Throughout the process, it was obvious to me the presents were going to overwhelm the kid so I set them further in the background and instead had him playing with a train toy instead.

It wasn’t the original image I had set out, but I was very pleased with the new direction it went. I didn’t intend to include the parents in the background, but I had invested all that time and background detail that it seemed a shame to not have them present either.

How long does it normally take to get the images “just right”?

I typically spend an entire afternoon or evening working on the images for a story. The most tedious part of the process is finding the right pose. Even more so, when there are multiple characters involved. I sometimes have to log on a game and my character stand next to a taller race so I can get proportions right in Photoshop. I enjoy creating art so I don’t mind setting aside a chunk of my day for this. (Just not everyday!) Ringo has told me that he felt guilty that it would not take him long to write a story when I spend way more time on the artwork alone. I wouldn’t do it if I didn’t enjoy it!

Is the story following, and in a sense, roleplaying your day-to-day gaming or do you have a whole story arc laid out?

For me, it’s about recording what I did in the game and putting a dwarven perspective on it. Nothing more. I blog so I can look back and go, “Remember when we did this? Oh, wow, look how long ago that was!”

For game purposes, yes. I have no other current blogs since Facebook is the RL blog equivalent.

What inspired you to blog about WoW? What lead you to this? As far as I know this is a unique concept for a WoW blog. How did you end up doing a RP blog?

When the game launched, we picked a roleplaying server, which was new territory for the both of us. Ringo had already played Warcraft and knew the lore pretty well, but I was basically fish out of water with my limited knowledge of the game’s background. I didn’t even know what was expected of me as a roleplayer and frankly, I really did not want to go around saying thees and thous. I did feel guilty that I wasn’t contributing to the overall ambience so when I saw several friends mention that they created an account at Blogspot specifically to post their character’s stories, I felt that I found a way to contribute in a roleplay sense.

The blog started out simple enough. If I did something in the game, I just wrote about it from a dwarf perspective. If someone said something stupid in general chat, I shared my opinion in-character. I would include screenshots as if I was taking photographs of my adventure. It was a bit awkward at first trying to find my voice on the blog.

In the meantime, Ringo was writing his longer, elaborate stories that weaved the game’s lore together with his character’s back story and wrote about how the guild came to be. Those stories were posted on the guild message board if anyone was interested in reading them. At some point, he checked out my blog and liked what I had been doing with it and asked if we could set up a joint blog. I was reluctant at first. It seemed to me that our stories would conflict, how would people know who is posting what, and so on. Eventually he talked me into it and we brainstormed a template that would allow us to share a blog yet keep us as individuals. The first layout had Ringo’s side and Beli’s side with our corresponding links to artwork, individual stories, and our own links. He asked me to help out with the images for his stories so in my spare time, I went back to his older posts and filled the holes. Over time, it really took shape and we hit our stride. It clicked for the both of us so when we revamped the site, there was no his or her side. There was simply “our story.” It became the blog of two dwarves on the same adventure.

So, to make a long story short, this blog was my way of contributing to the roleplaying community. I don’t really want to stop and chat with other people in Goldshire or Stormwind, but if they want their experience enriched by the people they meet in the game, there was a link to the our blog that was included in RPHelper mod. I have had people tell me they moused over me, saw the link, and looked at the blog and appreciated the stories.

What’s the hardest part of the blog? What takes you the longest to figure out?

There are a couple downsides that we face. The first being that Ringo churns out his stories, but he has to wait on me to do the artwork since I go at a much slower pace. He doesn’t complain, but he does give me multiple reminders that he has a story waiting to launch when I have the free time to do artwork for him. I’m sure that frustrates him.

The second downside is that I write self-contained stories. It all fits into one neat little post. I just get straight to the point and move on. Ringo has these huge arcs that he likes to write and release each chapter after a certain amount of time. Sometimes this ties up my character and prevents me from blogging about something that happened to me the night before. It is not realistic for me to brag about getting an pvp accomplishment when Ringo has my character on the other side of the world, all tied up in their travels.

We try to minimize those issues as much as possible, but it can be a minor annoyance if we’re not paying attention to what the other person is doing.

Has this worked out the way you expected it to? Is there anything you’d do differently?

It surpassed my expectations, actually. I thought we’d be at each other’s throat and the joint blog thing wouldn’t work out, but it turned out to be a lot of fun and we would seek out each other’s ideas on possible stories to write.

If you could give one piece of advice to new bloggers what would it be?

Just keep it short and sweet.

Are you an in-game roleplayer? What is your favorite aspect of the game? (alts, RP, pvp, raiding, leveling, theorycrafting, etc)

Only by action. I think about things through the perspective of my dwarf and act accordingly. For example, it didn’t make sense to me to get exalted with another race before my own. Why would I value the humans or elves more than my people? So I made sure the first race I got exalted with was with the dwarves even though there was no benefit to doing so at the time. (Back then, it was only worth getting exalted if you wanted a different racial mount.) I do /burp and /scratch emotes in-game because dwarves are not known for being delicate flowers. On a couple occasions, someone would tell me he thought I was a tailor because I was a cloth wearer. My standard response would be that my dwarven fingers were too fat to thread a needle!

My favorite aspect of the game is probably pvping. Not because I enjoy killing people, which I do, but because it’s a system that rewards me exactly for what I put into it. There is no one else for me to roll against and lose. I like raiding, but I really like the independence that pvp offers me in terms of gearing up and getting accomplishments.

Cataclysm is coming. I can image this will lead to some exciting times at Flinthammer Hall. Do you have any ideas that you’d like to share with us?What do you have on your to-do list before Cataclysm comes? What aspect of Cataclysm has you most excited?

Since I’ve been playing for 5 years, I told Ringo that I really wanted an extended break. It gets old that there’s constantly war somewhere or the other. Our characters are constantly leaving the boy with his grandparents as we march off in duty. Well, Beli’s tired of fighting a war she doesn’t care about. She wants to stay home and be with her child and enjoy the simple life for a change. Ringo has agreed with this perspective and said that this can be our new story direction. And obviously, when Cataclysm comes out, the world is going to change profoundly. There has to be something that impacts Beli directly to get her marching out the door and we have several different ideas of how that can play out.

When goblins were announced, I immediately declared Beli’s inevitable death and give Ringo permission to remarry whatever dwarf he wanted because I was going to be a goblin as I wanted all along! Ringo would not have any of it, said I wasn’t killing off anyone, and that we could pick a night a week to play goblins as our alt. Once the high wore off, I realized that it would be very hard to say goodbye to a character that had been a part of me so much for the past 7 years. So yay for Ringo, one less gravestone he has to visit.

If you could have any one thing from Blizz what would it be?

I really want them to put in more children models, especially dwarven ones. Obviously it would be easier on me so I wouldn’t have to manipulate the human boy model for our stories, but this is something that is really long overdue. There’s a dwarven child, Yarlyn Amberstill, that sells snowshoe rabbits at Amberstill Ranch — she is a dwarf adult that has been shrunken down to represent a child. At the very least, her model could be updated to look like an actual dwarven child.

What do you feel is your greatest WoW-related achievement, either indirectly or directly related to the game?

Achieving the Lieutenant Commander rank as a priest back when heals did not translate into honor points. I felt like I really earned my stripes because I worked twice as hard as everyone else to climb that horrid ladder.

Wordpress 2.9 (and 2.9.1!)

1. Global undo/”trash” feature, which means that if you accidentally delete a post or comment you can bring it back from the grave (i.e., the Trash). This also eliminates those annoying “are you sure” messages we used to have on every delete.
2. Built-in image editor allows you to crop, edit, rotate, flip, and scale your images to show them who’s boss. This is the first wave of our many planned media-handling improvements.
3. Batch plugin update and compatibility checking, which means you can update 10 plugins at once, versus having to do multiple clicks for each one, and we’re using the new compatibility data from the plugins directory to give you a better idea of whether your plugins are compatible with new releases of WordPress. This should take the fear and hassle out of upgrading.
4. Easier video embeds that allow you to just paste a URL on its own line and have it magically turn it into the proper embed code, with Oembed support for YouTube, Daily Motion, Blip.tv, Flickr, Hulu, Viddler, Qik, Revision3, Scribd, Google Video, Photobucket, PollDaddy, and WordPress.tv (and more in the next release).
