We will run a slide show of old photos in the hospitality room throughout the weekend.

We need pictures of club events and people from as far back as you can go. Please scan them at full size, attach* them to an email, and send them to editor@teae.org

If you can’t scan them, send the photos and we’ll scan and return them to you.

Tech Sessions

Tech sessions are an important part of the United events. We know that there are many folks in the club with significant knowledge and many who wish they had that knowledge. Please share what you know! You don’t have to be a big expert. Just talk about something you’ve discovered or figured out.

Your session could be a few minutes or a half hour. We’ll have a projector and screen if you want to show pictures. You could also do a hands-on thing at your car. Here are some suggestions to help jog your memory:  https://www.teae.org/tech-session-ideas/

We’ve been thinking that “lightning rounds” of short topics, maybe just 5 minutes, would be a great addition to the program.  We do still want to have some more lengthy sessions that might include pictures and / or hands on demos.

To help spark some ideas, we’ve come up with a list of potential topics and a few sample sub-topics to get you thinking of how you might be able to put a presentation together. Check the list below.

Joe reports that memberships have dropped by 20 in the past year, but Forum Participants are up. 

Newsletter Selections

• The Newsletter Selections, printed versus electronic percentages are essentially the same as last year. 
• Slides 9 and 10 show where and how large the regions are with Chesapeake being the largest down to one At Large member who is not in a region.

Editor/Webmaster Report from Kerch

• Slide #12 is a reminder to please use the form to get your events on the calendar and give a brief description of why someone should go to the event.
• There is a Discount Code for new members for $5 off their first year for their electronic membership if they use the code teae2023-25.  This offer has been extended through 2028   Share this code with new members to encourage them to join.

Rootes Review 2025

• Issue sizes tend to be smaller for the first half of the year.

Facebook from Jim Lindner

• Slide 14 shows that Facebook memberships go up by about 100 every 6 months.  Jim can see activity for only the last 60 days.  When people post, it gets a lot of responses.
• It was again noted by Jim and Kerch that we are unable to link the Facebook page to our website. 
• It was also suggested to post more photos from our events to the Facebook page.

Kerch asks what is the purpose of the Facebook page?

• A motion was made and approved to promote the discount code (teae2023-25) for new members from the Facebook page.
• Jim will write up a note to present to the board before posting it on the Facebook page to be sure things are stated well.

Visitors to the Website for the last 12 months

• There have been some issues with the website that Kerch has been working on.
• 4.5% of visitors log in to the site and they spend some time on the site. (This means they are members)
• About 95% of visitors to the site do not log in when they first go there. (This does not mean they are not members, just that they didn’t login)

Autocross dates were not available until late February and by then we were unable to find hotels to  accommodate those dates

What We Like About Camelback

• Location, lots of restaurants and lots of activities for the entire family
• All the event rooms are on the 4th floor
• The Parts Room will become the Banquet Room, so Parts Room needs to be completely      cleared out by 5:30. 

United Team So Far

• Sumra Manning will be chairman for the event, but is not available before
• Gary Schotland will also be responsible for the Banquet
• In an initial request for help from members in the area, several said they would help when the general location of the event was announced.  They will be contacted to help with areas that still need help.

Guest Room Blocks

It was suggested that the club apply cash to the total event cost instead of the comp rooms if possible.
Gary will ask and try to do that.

Meeting Room Rental Fees

Gary Schotland noted that 120 participants for the Banquet is too many so reaching the $6000 minimum for food might need to be watched

Tom Ehrhart made a motion for the president to sign the contract for Camelback so we can build a United.  Motion was seconded by Barb Geschke and the motion passed.

Tom wants to arrange a team site visit to Camelback as soon as possible to figure out the program

This month, we made some good progress with the engine. We started by taking it completely apart. We took off all the parts that weren’t the engine itself such as the water pump. The harmonic balancer required a special tool called a puller/installer. It bolted to the balancer and pressed against the crankshaft with a large bolt, slowly and carefully pulling it off the shaft without causing damage. Then we took out the valves, cam shaft, cams, pistons, and the many caps and covers that we encountered.

After we got everything apart, we were careful to organize things. We kept the lifters in the exact order we found them in. We also labeled the pistons one through eight and kept bearing caps in the same orientation. With all the new parts we took out, we of course had to reorganize our barn to fit them nicely as well.

Then we took the block, heads, crankshaft, and flywheel to Automotive Machine in Dayton. Doug Jennings recommended them, and Tim there was super nice. The coolest thing about the shop was seeing all of the specialized machines and the technicians who were hard at work bringing old engines back to life. From the smoke-filled lobby to the smell of old oil, it felt like stepping back in time. I wish I could be there when they work on our engine. I’d especially like to see how they make the cylinder bores so perfect.

I really want to build an engine that is about identical to stock, but maybe with a little more power. I don’t want any hot spots or any other engine issues because we made it too powerful — 250 horsepower is just fine with me. I also want it to sound nice, but with a Ford V8 that really shouldn’t be a problem. Though we might add a nice exhaust to it to give the Tiger a good rumbling sound and make it sound more alive. We’re also thinking about a better carburetor. Tim suggested a nice cam that would “shake the fenders a little.” If you have any suggestions for the build, I’d love to hear from you.

We also got a new sandblaster this month. The one we had was very old and it hardly blew any rust or corrosion from any surface we put in it. It was also nearly impossible to see the part that you were trying to sandblast. That’s pretty annoying. The new one is much more powerful which will allow us to sandblast our parts much faster and get them to the powder coating oven.

Overall, I feel like this month was very productive. Just exploring the inside of an engine for the first time was just such a cool experience. From the new equipment to the massive progress on the engine, I hope next month goes just as smoothly. I’d also love to thank Mr. [Rick] McCurdy for giving me some welding advice, we’ll put it to great use!

Recently I asked on Facebook for a source for replacement brushes for the wiper motor. I found a solution and wanted to share it here in case it helps others.

Our local electric motor repair shop had a high-carbon 1/4 x 1/4” brush for $10. I was able to cut that in half to make two.

I wrapped the brush in painter’s tape to help with making a clean cut. I then cut it in half with a Dremel and thin cutting wheel on medium-low speed. I was worried about chipping, but it cut very clean.

Then I wrapped flexible sandpaper around the rotor where the brushes ride and “pre-ground” the profile into one end so that they would make good contact right away.

And it works!

This month, we worked on getting the car ready for the dipper. We pulled the last few remaining parts off the body including the boot hinges and miscellaneous brackets. We also melted lead off the car. In the process we found about ten pounds of sand in the car that had accumulated over 60 years. The lead would prevent some 
of the dipper fluid from getting into certain areas. It was mostly in small discrete spots mainly where seams and welds in the car were located. In addition, we also cut out the rocker panels since they were almost completely rusted away. Lastly, we took the doors off the car to prevent them from slamming to the ground when we flip the car on the rotisserie.

We also worked on restoring the high beam switch in the driver side footwell. We only had to clean it up and powder coat it. We also restored the steering column. To do this we put most of the components on a steel wire wheel or in rust remover to get rid of all the rust. To replace the bearings, we took them completely apart and made our own new felt seal to replace the old one.

Then we just put some new oil on the completed bearings. Lastly, we restored the motor mounts clutch slave cylinder bracket, brake calipers and fully rebuilt the windscreen wiper motor and transmission. That was a bit of 
an adventure because we had to make our own replacement motor brushes.

My favorite part of our work over the last month was melting the lead off the body and visiting Doug Jennings to purchase some parts. Melting lead off the body was very satisfying while not being extremely tiring and very straight forward. Seeing Mr. Jennings’ garage was the other big highlight. He has many Tiger parts, and it seems as if you are walking through a Tiger-themed museum. I had attempted to pet his cat, but it didn’t take a genius to figure out that the cat had hated me from the moment I entered the garage. Maybe we’ll become friends eventually.

I’m looking forward to starting on the rear axle and taking apart the engine. I’m also looking forward to rebuilding the engine and learning how it works. Lastly, I’m looking forward to seeing the car when it gets back from the dipper in late March.

Fun with Welding

Old car restoration is sort of a family affair in the Gipe house.   My dad and I worked on a 1973 Triumph GT6 for about four years.  We started just after the COVID shutdowns, when I was about the same age as Pierce is now. We finished the restoration, got it into showroom shape, and won best in class at the Dayton Concours d’Elegance show 2024.

So the new family obsession is Pierce’s Tiger MkI

Since he first saw and heard a Tiger, Pierce has been completely sure that’s the car he wanted to restore. We were getting discouraged in our search for the right car in our price range. We had even started to look at other options. But be it by stubbornness or just dumb luck, we found Mike Mooney’s car in North Carolina. The look on his face was priceless!  I can hardly describe how great it has been to watch Pierce dive headfirst into this project. It’s like reliving the start of my own project car.

We’ve pretty much wrapped up stripping all the trim pieces and extras from the body. Our next project has been welding together a frame so that we can roll the car to reach tricky areas for panel repairs.

This has been a bit of a trial by fire as none of us have any experience whatsoever with welding. Granted, I use the term loosely. Some of our welds look like we did them with the wrong hand and our eyes closed while on illicit substances, but I digress. It just has to hold; it doesn’t have to look pretty and it definitely doesn’t! If you have advice or tips for welding, we’d love to have your help!
