The Wagner link

In 2007, Transcendental Creations released a split 7" with us alongside Norway's Audiopain.

Our song on this split was titled 'The Enemy Abroad'. It's simple and catchy but it also offers a structure which is a little unusual for us. The song is cut in two parts, with a middle section playing a lot with dynamics; something we weren't known for back then. The end section also features a bass solo and some tasty toms rolls courtesy of Zvord, our drummer.

What a lot of you who already heard the song might ignore is that the middle section of this song was an adaptation we did of a segment of one of Wagner's Opera: Das Rheingold.

Context: Wotan has hired two giants - Fasolt and Fafner - to build him a fortress. He promised goddess Freya to the giants as their payment. Freya is fleeing towards Wotan as the giants appear. The fortress is completed and they want their payment.

The segment we borrowed depicts the arrival of the giants. Watch the first 30 seconds of it:

As the song dealt with the idea that we all can be someone else's 'enemy abroad', I felt it was mandatory to have an image dealing with both politics, war and ideology to be linked to it. Replacing the bible with the earth was my way of commenting of the global nature of modern conflicts.

To this day, it remains one of my favorite Thesyre song!

I have no idea if the split is still available anywhere else (it was limited to 500 copies) but I still have 3 left. Get in touch if you're interested.

2010 recap

2010 will soon be over. It's been a quiet year for me and Thesyre. It's time for a short recap:

We are still writing material for Thesyre's next album. We will record, produce and release it ourselves when we are ready. I am looking forward to some limited physical formats as well as sharing it for free online, as usual.

Speaking of online material, I am glad to report we had an average of 6 people a day downloading from our archive in the last year. Those numbers are tiny, of course, when compared to bigger bands but I think it's good enough for a band like us with no promotion, no touring, no presence in the press in the last 18 months. There's no way we could sell 6 CDs or LPs a day on our own and on a steady basis, so those numbers please me enough to keep the archive thing going in 2011.

Artwork-wise I had very little time to work on covers and logos. Yet, I managed to come up with a logo for Atavism Records and I am completing the artwork and layout for the upcoming NKVD album. I also got a request from a merch company to come up with a design for a Motorhead tshirt; not sure if they'll use it or not. More on this soon... If you'd like me to work on something for you, keep in mind that I need some time to come up with anything. Go ahead and contact me.

Akitsa released "Au crepuscule de l'esperance" in 2010. The album received good reviews and made it on the top lists of a few writers and fans. There is also a 7" coming up on which I played the drums.

I just uploaded Thesyre's cover of Motorhead's "(Don't need) Religion".

This cover song was featured on the LP version of our second album "Duality". It was released by Blasphemous Underground in 2005. This is the only format this cover song was released on, so enjoy it now as a free MP3!

We decided to record this song because I used to play the main riff to set-up my sound while rehearsing with the band prior to the recordings of "Duality". On a side-note, we also recorded Sodom's "Outbreak Of Evil" for the CD version of the album.

For all of you Motorhead neophytes, you can hear the original on their 1982 album "Iron Fist".

Thanks to a friend, I got back the 2002-2003 Aufkrema rehearsals and 2 unreleased demo tracks we were working on which have never been completed and, obviously, released.

Loudness war: now over?

When we released the latest Thesyre album "Resistance", we also sent to the press a statement claiming we avoided getting into the loudness war which simply made most rock and metal album sound like a wall of bricks. Instead of pushing up the levels and compressing it like mad, we opted for a simple volume boost of the mix and sent it pretty 'unmastered' to the label, Osmose Productions. I am glad we did that as the album kept its original dynamics and the LP version of it comes out even better than the CD for this very reason.

It seems we were not the only ones thinking like that. Many bands did so in the last years and the reawakening of the vynil format might hint at music lovers' desire to go back to something 'real', something a lot more natural sound-wise. An organization like Turn Me Up! proves my point: we need more dynamic records!

There should be only one person with the control of the volume when you listen to music: you!

The end of november will mark a year since we decided to share Thesyre's music as free downloads. Ever since the first files got uploaded, we've been experiencing steady flow of downloads and even up to this day, we're still having people downloading. It seems the idea was a good one!

I would like to get your feedback on this:
Shall we keep posting new music for free and still release it on a physical format or are you all willing to keep downloading exclusively? What are you file format preferences; MP3, FLAC, OGG? Would you buy a CD or a LP? Would you prefer limited or unlimited pressings? Shirts, beanies, posters? You get the idea...
