Abrams, the preeminent publisher of art and illustrated books, launched Appleseed, a beautiful list of books for babies, toddlers, and preschoolers (ages birth to 5 years), in spring 2012. Appleseed features board books, novelty books, and young picture books, all artfully conceived and developmentally appropriate. By pairing the comfort of familiar objects with the introduction of something new or unexpected, each book serves to expand on what the child already knows and will transform his or her perception of the world. Last week I mentioned that CreativeMornings is now on 6 continents, which caused a bit of confusion over how many continents there are.

What I’ve since learned is that there are in fact different models being taught around the world. The seven-continent model is usually taught in China, India and most English-speaking countries. The six-continent combined-Eurasia model is sometimes preferred in the former states of the USSR and Japan. The six-continent combined-America model is taught in Latin America and in some parts of Europe including Greece, Portugal and Spain. I can somewhat understand that we can’t seem to get all of our outlets to be the same, but count of continents? Really?

I had the huge honor to kick off the TYPO conference in San Francisco a few weeks back, and this is my talk. I am speaking on the importance of taking your side projects seriously and share 8 lessons I am going to teach my children.

TYPO conferences take place in Berlin, London and San Francisco. I highly recommend attending one.

Love this bamboo Wall Caddy, which includes a weekly planner. (not sure about that typeface though)

While I obviously don’t have the space for a Bedroom in a Box, I must say, I’d be intrigued to put this in a big giant loft, if I had one. I love furniture that challenges our usual perception of what they are supposed to look like or function. It was designed by Latvia based designer Rolands Landsbergs of Boxetti.

These two kids saw the GOTYE music video SOMEBODY THAT I USED TO KNOW and fell in love with it. They started requesting the song every time they’d be riding in the car, singing along, of course. One day, their parents set up a go camera behind their seat and taped them over a few car rides. Awesome.

At last Friday’s 99% Conference, I had the pleasure to experience the magic of old Tintype Portrait Photography. Michael Shindler brought his tintype studio set up all the way from SF to the 99% conference and set up shop.

In this Cool Hunting video they talk to Michael, co-founder of Photobooth. If you are in SF, make sure to go by and have one of these Tintype Portraits taken. Nothing really compares.
