Not everyone can rock a string bikini two-piece

Summer is on its way, which means it’s time for swimsuit season. While this particular shopping trip is dreaded and feared by many, buying a swimsuit with the right fit will avoid embarrassing and unflattering comments at the beach or pool.

The most important thing for a swimsuit is for it to fit. For the top, go for a halter, which can tie in the back for a more customized fit, and an underwire to give you the best support. When in the dressing room, turn to the side and move around to ensure that your side and bottom bust is totally covered.

Bottoms have to fit tightly around the waist, especially if you plan to do some actual swimming. Just be careful that the waist isn’t so tight that you have the oh-so-attractive muffin top. Whether you decide to go for a one or two piece, here are a few things to keep in mind.

Two-piece swimsuits
The bikini is the most popular two-piece swimsuit. However, a bikini should be worn by those with an athletic physique. A halter that ties in the back with substantial straps (and closures) is slimming and will keep you all in. For this reason, avoid the triangle-shaped bikini tops because they rarely give enough support or coverage. This gives the appearance that you are sagging out of the swimsuit. For those who like two-piece suits but find that the shorter styles are not flattering to your physique, try a tankini. As the name suggests it is a two piece swimsuit but with a cami-like tank rather than a bra-like top.

Instead of a pantie-like bottom, try the boy short style. This style is flattering because it covers all of the tush, but adds a hint of playful flirtation to your swimsuit look. Don’t mix this style with a tankini – this two-piece look covers so much that a one-piece suit would be a better choice. Keep in mind that the bottom of your swimsuit shouldn’t ride up into a wedgie or give the illusion that it is disappearing.

One-piece swimsuits
Fashion sometimes favors those with less than perfect figures. While one-piece swimsuits were considered unpopular for the young, they are now trendy. In this month’s “Vogue,” a seven-page spread was devoted to the new style. What is great about this swimsuit is that it can give the impression of sculpture and shape while covering the body. The neckline of this suit should be a scoop or V-neckline, with a leg rise that is not too high. If you have narrower hips, a higher leg cut will emphasis your curves. Avoid a swimsuit with too small of a printed pattern – instead try one that plays with geometric shapes in different bold colors.

The 40s-inspired one-piece suit with a sweetheart neckline and low-rise leg opening is also coming back into style. For those who want to accentuate your waist, this can be a good choice since many suits are pleated or ruched across the midriff.

Swimsuits are meant for fun times, and so shopping for one shouldn’t be feared. It’s important to look for a swimsuit that flatters the body type that you have and will make you feel confident. Trends for suits will come and go, but you will always look stylish as long as your swimsuit both fits and supports you.
