New Year, time to refocus

I've made a promise to myself to post more than I have in the past. I'm thankful for the encouragement from my close friends and family members who push me to be better. I spend much time helping others and never taking the time to make sure that "Sweetlocs" gets taken care of. I have allowed for my special place here to take abuse and not post as I had envisioned. But there is no time to cry over spilled milk. Just wipe it up and keep it moving.

I've been going over the direction of where I would like to take the site. From SweetlocsTV to Sweetlocs merchandise and so much more.

Playing "Tomorrow" by Tevin Campbell this morning to encourage myself. And hopefully it inspires the hearts of others out there as well.

One of my favorite comedians Richard Pryor was born today in 1940. He would have been 70 years old. My favorite movies are Brewster's Millions and The Toy. Sadly we lost Mr. Pryor in December 2005 from a heart attack. For many years, he battled multiple sclerosis (MS). Thankful for the comedy he has left for us to cherish.

Here was one of the highlights of the evening with Kelly Price, Marsha Ambrosius, Jill Scott and Ledisi covering Nina Simone's "Four Women." I'm a fan of Nina Simone's and was truly impressed with the performance at the first televised Black Girls Rock awards on BET. I commend BET for partnering up with the foundation to televise the awards. I hope that a future generation was inspired and realize their potential.

It still feels as if the news spread of Michael Jackson's passing. I still can't believe he's gone. I'm thankful for all of the love he gave us through his music. He continues to live on in our hearts. I read that the Jackson family will all be together on today. I know the hurt and pain we fans feel is in no comparison to what his relatives and close friends are dealing with. Deaths can be somber at times, but we must remember to smile, rejoice and give thanks to the Creator for allowing us to have these people in our lives. So I say that to ask you to "get your Michael Jackson" as Eric Roberson stated in his song "Celebrate." Celebrate positively. You will forever be missed. "Gone too soon"

Tupac Shakur

Today marks what would have been the 39th birthday of the late Tupac Amaru Shakur. Rapper, songwriter, actor, record producer, poet, screenwriter, activist. From starting with Digital Underground to landing acting roles to his solo career, Tupac was a hot commodity of the 90's. I know I had a crush on him (yes I admit it, loved those long eyelashes hehehe). And I know I'm wasn't alone when rushing to the movie theater to see Poetic Justice which starred Tupac, Janet Jackson, Regina King and Joe Torry. Men rushed to see Ms. Jackson and women rushed to see Tupac...ahhhh "back in the days when I was I'm not a kid anymore but some days I sit and wish I was a kid again..."

I was a freshman at Alabama State University Fall of 1996 and I will never forget when news of his death spread around campus. People in my dorm were crying all over the place. I still think the same thoughts as I did around that time. Wondering what other works could have come from his life. Would he have changed some of his lyrical content?

Many songs caught my attention, but "Brenda's Got A Baby" still tugs at my heart strings. Because it still rings true even in today's society yet it was recorded early 90's. Many like to quote the wild side of Tupac with the raunchy lyrics (which don't get me wrong I danced to in my youth lol).

In 2009, his mother Afeni Shakur organized a benefit event on his birthday. This year the benefit will be held in Atlanta, GA with comedian Mike Epps as host.

Happy Otis Redding. Gone too soon. I often wonder what music he would have created, and the impact it would have had on our musical society. Otis passed away at the age of 26 in 1967. For the music trivia lovers out there, did you know the Bee Gees wrote "To Love Somebody" originally for Otis Redding. But unfortunately he passed away before he could record it. I know that track would have be amazing! Thank you Otis for the gift of music you gave the world in your short time on this Earth.

Truly has been a minute since I've logged an entry here. Many different reasons on why too. But that will stop as of now. No longer can I make excuses for not taking care of my own business. I'm currently working on the construction of www.sweetlocs.com to be more informative for everyone. I choose not to reveal everything that I have in store, because people are watching and you can't tell all of your secrets just yet, right? Right!

But there will be more content that I know everyone will enjoy and of course information on business services I offer. Prayerfully all will be completed by this summer on what I would like to have accomplished.

I have so many ideas birthed inside of me and staying still and silent to make sure I present it correctly for everyone.

I must give thanks to SoulCulture out in the UK for this amazing tribute to Aaliyah. Growing up in the 90's I was definitely influenced by her music and I still jam to it. This year she would have been 30 years old, which reminded how young she was when she left us.

Yesterday, June 25th, 2009 we lost a true Legend in music history Michael Jackson. Growing up MJ was my first musical muse and still is to this day. We all know that at one day we must leave this Earth, just didn't think MJ would leave so soon. As he sang "Gone Too Soon." I'm not even going into the details of his death, but will continue celebrate his legacy. I promise to teach future generations all about his music.

Thank you Michael for giving me songs I could dance until I sweated out my press, to giving me songs I could shed a tear over and for songs that have allowed me to be conscience of the world issues and environment. You will never be forgotten.

Leave you all with a fave song of mines....wait as a matter of fact I think and know the celebration of his life will continue throughout the rest of this year. There are so many songs to choose from.

R.I.P MJ we love you!!!

I've been a music fan lover of the group Boyz II Men since 1991, and still support every concert when it's in my local area. Last night was no different at B.B. King's. There were various clips that I captured for memories which you can find on my Youtube Channel (see links above). But the highlight came after they left the stage and Wayna Morris came back on stage to deliver these view words.

For those that are readers/followers of my blog, and to those who know me personally understand how much I miss RICH, PURPOSEFUL music for my spirit. And I can't help to touch and agree on what he's saying here.

I pray that you music lovers feel the same after seeing this clip....

They Don't Want Music........Angela Bofill

Apologies to everyone waiting for the next installment in the THEY DON'T WANT MUSIC series.....today's entry is focused on Angela Bofill....enjoy and please take to heart what I mention regarding health insurance.

Angela Bofill was born in 1954 to a Cuban father and Puerto Rican mother and raised in Harlem, NY. Which ranks her as one of the first Latin women to be in the R&B arena. There is no wonder that Angela was destined for a musical career with her god-father being Tito Puente. By the age of 18, she had become to be recognized as a great songwriter and singer working with the likes of and Herbie Hancock, Dizzy Gillespie to name a few.

Before recording her own music Angela performed with Ricardo Morrero and the Group & Dance Theater of Harlem chorus. She is classically trained in Opera with a degree from Manhattan School of Music. Some of her many fans include Denzel Washington, Mary J. Blige, Lenny Kravitz, Prince and Santana.

In 1978, she released her first album simply entitled "Angie". One of her hits from that album was "I Try." A personal favorite of mines is "I'm On Your Side," which comes from her 1983 album "Teaser". That song was also remade by Jennifer Holliday of Dreamgirls fame in 1991. Other hits for Angela include: "Angel of the Night," "Something About You," "Holding Out for Love" and "Too Tough."

In 2006, Angela suffered a stroke which left her paralyzed on the left side of her body. Sadly Angela doesn't have any health insurance to cover her medical expenses. Her managment joined together with top jazz stations in Los Angeles, Detroit and New York and held benefit concerts to raise funds for her.

I can't stress enough the importance of having health insurance, especially for my indie friends out there. Don't play with your health please! And for those looking to be "signed" to make them rich and take care of everything.....please please think again. Not to say you're not talented but know that the "industry" will have you sign over your HEART and SOUL and not pay you ANY of what it's WORTH!!! And that's the truth. So again I urge those without insurance to research and find out about some low cost insurance for yourselves. Think about it, if your VOICE, your FINGERS, your LIPS are part of what makes you that cashflow, what happens if you INJURE something or need MEDS to treat something. Please take care of yourselves......now with that said back to Angela..

In July 2007, Angela suffered yet another stroke. She is currently at a nursing home receiving rehabilitation services.
