Royal Dutch Shell said it would not tie executives' bonuses in 2011 to a benchmark index after its expulsion from that index over its Nigerian operations scuppered its 2010 sustainability-linked bonuses. Shell was dropped from the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) in September 2010 by the index's design committee, partly because of concerns about oil spills in Nigeria, according to Allie Boyer, a spokeswoman for Sustainable Asset Management which compiles the data for the index.

Jonathon Porritt speaks out about the latest UK government white paper on the future of sustainable development.
The verdict is pretty bad from his point of view. The UK government has lost its legitimacy and is killing Sustainable Development. He therefore chose the title: "SD RIP".

This is how the blog post on his blog starts:
First they killed the SDC. Now they are trying to kill off Sustainable Development itself.

Board Diversity: British Government Wants More Women on Top

Not enough women on top. That's the reality that is driving Britain's latest appeal to the private and public sectors: Increase female participation on boards to promote business development. In a government-commissioned report, new guidelines urge the country's largest companies to aim for a minimum of 25 percent female representation on their boards. But the report, according to the New York Times, stops short of recommending a Norway-like quota system.

The ‘green jobs’ market continues to enjoy positive growth despite the turbulent global economy, with salaries of ‘green collar’ workers increasing by 4% since 2009, according to the results of a industry study. The results of this year’s Carbon Salary Survey indicate a prospering and expanding sector, with the overall average annual global salary standing at $79,000, an increase of over $3000 on last year’s results.

It is no longer enough just to develop a corporate social responsibility report to meet the expectations of stakeholders: companies now have to improve the quality and accuracy of the data they provide, according to a PricewaterhouseCoopers report in the U.S..

The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) formally launched its US Focal Point at the New York Stock Exchange yesterday.

The office will allow it to work in close partnership with US businesses whose uptake of CSR reporting has not mirrored the EU.

Speakers at the event included representatives from Ceres, UPS and Avon as well as GRI and NYSE.
