London to Brighton Veteran Car Run 2009

We did our best to get everyone on the course, but the heavy weather conditions meant that it simply can't be guaranteed. Very well done to everyone who took part, and the bonus of finishing to so many of you, I hope you have dried out by now...

In what will be recorded as one of the most accurate weather forecasts for some time, the gale force winds and heavy rain duly arrived mid-morning across sussex on the day of the run 1st of November 2009. With a large swell surrounding the Brighton Pier as the weather closed in, the early finishers began to finish and witness some of the heaviest rain of the year.

Some people timed their run through the heaviest rain of the day:

The wind started to rip the banners along the walkway, so they were taken down, just in case, and meanwhile the strong Belgian contingent seemed to avoid any rain on their way down and through Sussex.

Eventually there were some bits of sunlight, and the crowds did turn out in strength to see the cars cross the finish line and the banners were put back up.

After which, a quick rest in the paddock area in Madeira Drive and recovery before preparing for the Annual Ball afterwards...

The Barns Green Half Marathon

The 27th Barns Green Half Marathon was started by Dame Vera Lynn and the organising committe presented a cheque to the Dame Vera Lynn trust for £1500.

The charity on the day, aided by your carparking donations was GRACE
and the reasearch they do.

Dame Vera kept a little bit drier than everyone else at the official start line, which has returned to the normal location next to the hall.
The rain didn't relent on what was to prove challenging conditions, the winner Toby Lambert making it back in 1:10:01 - a very good result, age graded at 85.19.

The crowds were prepared and ready to see the winners and runners come into the finish line with the ladies winner Astrid McKeown finished in 1:24:38, an age grading of 77.98%

On a sunday that we would all probably rather forget about the rain and the wind, and remember the guts, determination and the fun had by everyone it was a good turn out at Loseley Park to raise funds for the CHASE hospice care for children charity.

Very well done to everyone who a)decided to get out and do it regardless of the weather forecast and b)completing the course. Fingers crossed we'll see you at more of the AAT cross country events through their winter race series the G3's

The London To Brighton Veteran car run takes a lot longer due to the extensive cataloguing required as well as expiditing the finish line photos for the official finisher packs - just in case if you were wondering !

Judging by the technical details on the images (ISO 2000, F2.8, 1/500th) it was as dark in Billericay this morning as it was everywhere else when the heavens opened, although I think your's was the only race with a bridge across some of it !

Beachy Head Marathon

With over 14,000 to choose from - hopefully you'll find yourself if you can ! There are full instructions on how to find your pictures using the race number, or how to reduce your searching through everything on the gallery home page itself - so please have a read there to save yourself some time !

I could go on about it being the wettest race year in a long time, but you all know that, suffice to say I ended up pitching the small tent and getting right to the back of it to stop the mizzle getting on the lens. It was a challenge technically for everyone - running or watching, to stay on their game and make it through the day, which turned out ok in the end ! (although Sunday was nicer wasn't it)

The Start - the mist had fallen down the hill, later on, it would be higher up...

@Jevington, about 30 minutes into the run - it was an Ely runner who came past first - but as I mentioned to Number 1 as he went past in second - they don't have hills in Ely...

@Alfriston and the White Horse - it was so dark Mike resorted to using his flash, and then gave a large 300mm f2.8 lens a run out. He managed to somehow see through the mist and rain to see the white horse.

Birling Gap - Horseshoe Woods. After walking up to the top of the cliffs, losing all vision and sanity, we (my recently appointed wingman Julian and I) tried to find somewhere a bit more homely for the next four hours after Jevington. So we pitched the tent and settled in for the day, running as much of a double act as possible trying to cheer people on and up ! If anyone else wants to join me for a days work of cheerleeding just get in touch... There was a wonderful view of the hills behind you, it's just the mist, rain and fog kinda made it less fantastic.

At the Finish, it rained like it did everywhere else, but with less misty stuff. As usual, the main man won, and Sam won the womens race for the first time - a big step up from the half marathons and 10ks we usually see her at the front of. Great Stuff Sam !

If you're waiting for news of Beachy Head marathon - then when ready - it will be here - we have some 20,000+ images to go through, and we can prepare about 400 per hour, so we are aiming for Wednesday some time... Please check back then or keep registered for these updates to keep informed. We'll try not to go too cross-eyed in the meantime !

So, after the rain and mist, fog and gale force winds of Saturday, it was up early at 5am and off to make the best of the 25hour day that was Sunday. I used 21 of them !

First off - big thank you to Crystal Palace Tri members for the extra £1 for the parking meter, and the other chap who originally offered me £1 in the Bridge car park. As many of you will have found too - the parking meters in the carparks wouldn't take any money before 8:30am ?!? However, the ones in the road near the Diana Memorial would - so £3 of Her Majesty's' British pounds secured parking until 11.20am, plenty of time !

Having just weighed it, I wheeled my 21kg of kit (thank goodness for the trolley!) the half mile to the start, checked in with Lisa and the crew and got ready for the start.

Given more opportunity and higher mobility I would have gone over to Rotten Row for the first lap shots, but light (shady and dark in the trees - yes it was !) time and weight was against me so I stuck with the available light on the main drive before T1, and then went off over to get the cycling.

The main challenge with the cycling shots was the hard sunlight causing overexposure or face shadows when the clouds gave way - especially if you were on the wrong side of the bikes, and large amounts of backlighting on the trees, and a very straight road (you want a bit of wiggle so you can get a nice road perspective off into the distance behind the subject).

The top bend before T2 had a bit of curve which just about did the job - just as long as people didn't ease off too early before the turn (otherwise you just get the resting photos instead of the going-for-it photos)... That seemed to work, and like most spectators I was counting Priscilla's Laps so we knew when to go to the finish...

T2 down and then it was over to the finish for the final run-ins. Ideally there would be time to get to the laps, but if you went out for that shot, you'd miss either half of the cycling, or the winners finishing. What to do ?

Ideally somewhere over by the lido getting the Serpentine in the background is a possible shot but that's a half mile walk with aforementioned kit, and you are not going to get back for the prizegiving, let alone the finishers ! Also, the locals are up and about by then - making the view totally impeded - not ideal.

Sticking to the finish and getting those winning efforts from everyone was the right decision, especially if you want to get everyone...

It was a long and brilliant day - the weather was perfect (if a little chilly at the start).
As we can't really put into words the effort that goes into these events, all I can say is that it was an honour and a priveledge to be there to witness your achivements !

Wimbledon 10k photos now online

by the way - we are still working through the pictures from the Abingdon Marathon and with the volume we're working through we anticipate them being available on Wednesday morning. Keep subscribed to keep informed of progress.

Here's a little photo summary of the race:

Leaving the Start field the lead car headed out to clear a path around the streets of wimbledon.
As the Headline Sponsor http://www.wimbledonaudi.co.uk/ they have a long association with the race, providing the lead car and sponsoring it. They don't do roadsweepers, so a slightly faster vehicle was in order... They do sell them without clocks on too, if you were wondering.

Number 10, the eventual winner could be seen picking his pace early on as the start got underway...

The Race winner, Number 10 (in 32:42), Salah Hmatou Amaidane of team Sandblast Arts was promoting a fundraising race Running the Sahara http://www.sandblast-arts.org/specialfeature.php Apparently it's in the Sahara Desert - so go there if you fancy a challenge.

First lady home winning her first race was Zoe West of Epsom and Ewell Harriers, who was really running a warm down after her 4km x-country race the day before...

A competive sprint finish between James and George around the 42 min mark.

Former top 25 international tennis player Annabel Croft who is now a presenter on Sky Sports and Eurosport came home in a respectable 47:52 to finish 213th overall.

Things get busy at the finish with 3 competitors finishing in 45:12 (gun time) - but probably aiming for sub 45 on the chip time...

Beachy Head Marathon is all ready to go in two weeks on Saturday the 24th - possibly the most picturesque off road marathon in the country ? - and if you're looking for a big race to watch there's the Great south run (10k) on the next day (25th) in Southsea, but 21,000 people doing 10k = just a long queue surely ? (if you do the maths, with less than two feet space each, you would be able to cover the length of the course if they stood in a long single line.. . hmmm.) Sooo glad we're not covering that one !

We will soon have the Raw Energy Pursuits dates confirmed for 2010 and as soon as we do, we'll pass them on - same goes for F3 events - they are due out soon - they already have two at Shiplake College booked in for May and September. Go have a look - a new venue as Dorney Lake starts to get the 2012 Seb Coe Treatment. Watching to see where Human Race choose to go...

One last thing - whatever you do - book out March the 28th 2010 now for a race - you can guarantee with easter where it is (April 2nd to 5th) there will be something going on for you on that day - there's already six very popular events on that day - so don't get caught out with other commitments !

The new event on this list is the Urban Race SOD - or The Sussex Obstacle Dash.

We wern't really sure what it was all about - so we asked Dan for some more info. As it turns out - it's more sensible than a GRIM challenge (or similar sillyness) but not as *sensible* or flat as the Phoenix road races on the same day...

This is what Dan's PR men told us -
SOD The Run
Hundreds of runners are expected to descend on the South of England Centre in November for a new running race with a difference. The Sussex Obstacle Dash is a unique event at the South of England Centre in West Sussex on Sunday 8th November 2009.

The catch is competitors will be running on a cross country course made for horses. Runners will negotiate water jumps, fences and other obstacles. The event includes a 5km or 10km run race and also offers the opportunity for people to race together in teams of 2, 3 or 4.

Race Director, Dan James, said: “This tough little race is not for the faint hearted. That is why we have a 5km race as well for beginners. Athletes will meet an obstacle around every 500 metres and some of them are challenging. It’s a great low cost way for people to get fit and do something different. The team element is also proving really popular and it will need teamwork for a group to get a good time”.

The event has an association with The National Autistic Society (NAS) who hope to raise a few thousand pounds from sponsorship at the event. Steve Cheshire, NAS Director of Fundraising, said: "Autism is a serious, lifelong and disabling condition, but the right support at the right time can make an enormous difference to people’s lives. It is thanks to events like the Sussex Obstacle Dash, that we are able to provide valuable support and services to people with autism, their families and carers and raise awareness at the same time. It is great to see so many people going that extra (muddy!) mile for the NAS and we would like to thank everyone who will be taking part and wish them the very best of luck!"

The 2009 Petts Wood 10k

Congratulations to everyone on completing the third running of the Petts Wood 10k, a full turn out in good running conditions.

The rain held off for the lead man to set a new course record. Ben Louch, in a time of 35:19, apologised for not stopping at the finish - he had to rush off to his Mums Birthday !

Oxted Runners - Titsey 10k

The Oxted Runners Titsey 10k was launched for the first time ever this Sunday.

The rain held off and a very healthy "at limit" turnout for the race of 250 turned up (ably helped by the prolific signage and fantastic numbers of marshals on hand) for the 10k around the woods and lanes of the Titsey Estate and Limpsfield Common.

The starting pack, smoothly spread out by the finish-time pens at the start moved gracefully past the golfers (who were not quite as graceful) along the first path...

Having been caught in an accident road closure the last time I drove over to Winchester on the M25 on an early sunday morning it was with some trepidation that I opted for the M23-25-3 route to Winchester again this time.

Leaving a bit late after waiting for the babysitter I managed to make surprisingly good time - only a few nutters trying to drive up behind eveyone with nowhere else to go. The M3 was pleasantly empty southbound.

I checked in with the Marshals and Co-ordinators at the finish line about an hour before the first finishers were due to make it in. It's a bit weird driving to an event after it has started, but with the linear route across some of the windiest roads in the UK, it's a matter of getting straight to location on time.

My colleage had gone for the coastal route from Hove and was heading for the 21mile mark on the course - that's the bit in the woods on the fourth leg of the relay - where he found he had no mobile coverage - that made it a tad tricky to check in with each other through the day !

All set up at the finish with about 40 minutes to go before the first runner came in it was time for a bit of food from the burger van before settling down to 3 hrs of straight photography without a break. Note the race split at the finish - quite unique - and if the chip timing is introduced next year - then possibly the last time it will be seen.

Anticipating the question - why didn't you go where you were last year with the hill in the background ?
Well in all honesty - first off I didn't want to park my car on a rut like last year when REAC kindly winched me out (after the AA had given up), and secondly there was a different photographer covering the finish line last year. Unfortunately he's recently broken his arm, so whilst passing on yours and our good wishes, we were asked to cover the finish line - so it's not possible to be on the course and also at the finish.

It soon all started to get busy - with the first home anticipated at around 2:45 we all had ourselves in position (stopwatches poised and cameras and timing kit at the ready, Tshirts stacked ready to give out, massage tent going up) with our eyes peeled for about 15 minutes. It was a long 15 minutes !

Finally we had a glimpse round the corner and - yes - first home was a Winchester vest.
This was the first person home - team 2086 from home club winchester. He'd caned it - check the results for the time - quite very rather good.

There were a few other escapees from Sussex, not to mention the Henfield joggers team there was also this pair from Arunners (Arun Runners...)

Finally - just be careful what you get up to in the woods on these types of races - you never know what you will find...

That's about all from me for this race report, the drive home was uninspiring even though I took the south coast route back to Sussex as everyone was driving north back to London on the M3. It rained insipidly and home was achieved at about 6.30pm - straight into back up and download, food and then sorting out the images.

The other team out on Sunday was covering the Rowers Revenge at Marlow Rowing club (home of Steve Redgrave) - a Triathlon with rowing instead of swimming. Some frightening times put down on the rowing - 10 minutes for 4000m ?!?!? - that's international pace.

F3 Events Rowers Revenge Triathlon now live

This Sunday saw the 15th running of the Rowers Revenge Triathlon, this year organised by F3 Events in association with Marlow Rowing Club. The event format swaps swimming for a 4000m ergo based rowing before continuing with a 23.4km cycle and 7.15km run and the entry field reflected this with strong showings from both rowing and triathlon clubs.

30 ergos all lined up and ready for the start of the event at the riverside.

After the 4000m row it was a quick run to transition to head out on the bikes

There was a close battle for 2nd place between Marius Kwint and Christopher Heape with less than a minute separating them at the end of the event.

In what was the first Triathlon Tippy-Toe in the water for Hever Castle organised by Telemark Productions

The initiative for the race has been lead by those super people from the Princes Trust

and we'd like to thank Alison Mihal for making the contact and inviting us along - providing the race coverage for you all. 10% of Profits from photo sales go directly to the Princes Trust, so please add that to your list of good reasons to buy your pictures !

Fingers crossed this will lead to a "Castle Series" of Triathlons for everyone to take part in and we're looking forwards to see how those come about, and seeing you there !

Judging from the stories on Tri-talk there was much adventure, first time excitement and great experiences had by a great many of you - just go over here to find out more from "theprawn" for just one tale of achievement...

For us it was also an early, long and tough day - mass participation triathlons present their own logistical challenges in terms of good photographic coverage, trying to get everyone at each stage and then also the sheer volume of images afterwards that we work through (we ended up with over 20,000 at one point). None of our work flow is automated (because you can't if you want quality retained) so as you know it's been a long few days going through the images and now there's a fair old collection on there for you to choose from.

Starting at 5am and getting there for 6:30 we took advantage of the Bacon Bap for Marshals and volunteers as it was a very misty and cold start - the bouys on the water were hard to see at all. After a while things got going, and by 7:30 apart from the sun reflecting off the water and blinding you things were looking up.

Then Henry VIII turned up with Anne Boleyn, gave the royal wave, and the fun began...

A brief swim for some, the longest of their life for others. On the plus side, if you got tired you could stand up and have a rest, it's not water polo.

Some gave their support teams a big smile on the way to T1, others were a whole load more focussed on the task at hand...

Shoulder numbers are difficult to read through layers of rubber, so do remember to browse through the swim wave folders on the gallery to find your swim exit pictures - just read the instructions on the main gallery front page. (NB there are only Swim exit photos for the Anne Boleyn Swims)

T1 exit got busy, with plenty of action across the path to get to the bike mounting area and then off round the rolling hills of Kent (no it wasn't very flat was it !)

Some of you would have found the course easy, but many saw it as a fair challenge to your biking skills with a fair smattering of hill climbs and descents to keep you concentrating all the way round.

Then it was off for a quick run round the estate, along the long walk, round the moat, past the Graveyard (no - don't stop there!) and into the finish (or another lap ?!)

Finishing has never seen such sweat pleasure, down the nicely tree lined avenue to the Finish banner and your Medal and goody bag where Henry and Anne were waiting to congratulate you.

There were at least one curtsey and several bows to their Royal Highnesses' at the end of the races, as well as a few cheers and raised arms.

Whilst the ladies long course winner did it in style, you might like to know that she lost her bet to beat her other half who was doing the short course in the same time.

And a big thank you from Henry VIII, the Princes Trust, Hever Castle and Anne Boleyn at the finish !

REP Firle Half Marathon & 10k now online

Once again the team from Raw Energy Pursuits had booked the good weather for the Firle Half Marathon and 10k events. Held in the grounds of the Firle Estate with the course climbing up onto the South Downs this is challenging and scenic event.

The day was well supported with over 430 runners taking part with plenty of local club vests on display. Greeting them at the finish, a sports drink and shoulder bag, with massage available, Cliff bars on sale and Countryside Catering providing much needed bacon rolls and cake for re-fueling.

First to get underway were the runners in the Half Marathon followed 45mins later by the 10k

The Half Marathon was won by Robbie James from Lewes A.C beating last year's winner into second place.

Matthew Eade of Seaford Striders came home first in the 10k to retain his title for this event.

After the winners prizes had been presented there was a prize draw for all those who had put their race number into the pot. As you can see there were tons of prizes to go round and it was a good excuse for people to stay on a while after they'd finished the race and swap race stories. It also stopped the second half of the field from feeling left behind as there was good atmosphere and support for everyone as they came in to the finish.

Once again a another well organised event from Mick, Steve, Nigel and the rest of the Raw Energy Pursuits Team, the last for 2009, and we look forward to more in 2010.

FGS Extreme Terrain Festival photos now available

Runners, riders and swimmers were greeted by a misty lake and the promise of warm weather on the MOD training area at Hawley Lake for the 2009 For Goodness Shakes! Extreme Terrain Festival. With a record entry field and some 6 different events taking place it promised to be a great day of cross country racing.

The finish scene was set and it was time for the action to begin.

First race of the day was the Extreme Terrain 10k (XT10) a challenging cross country 10k run across heathland, woodland tracks and fire tracks.

William Clark took the front right from the start and held on to win in 35:40 closely followed by Adam Przedrzymirski who finished in 35:45.

Then with the bikes all racked and the last of the mist clearing from the lake, it was time for the duathlons to get underway.

First off was the Extreme Terrain Duathlon Sprint (XTD Sprint) one 5k lap of the run course, followed by 12k on the bike, then topped off with another 2km cross country run. Here's a quick video of them getting underway.

Elite athlete Sam Gardener, was well supported on the day as he won the XTD Sprint by a clear margin.

In the Extreme Terrain Duathlon Full (XTD Full) Jim McConnell (285) was the early leader and maintained his lead to finish some 7 mins ahead of a strong field.

Out on the bike course there was plenty of water so those without a swim didn't feel left out!

First into the lake were the athletes in the Extreme Terrain Aquathon (XTA), followed closely by the triathletes.

After the 1.5km 2 lap swim in the lake, local athlete Stuart Boswell of Farnham Tri Club heads out of transition to start his 10km run and finish overall in 10th place.

The last two events of the day were the Extreme Terrain Triathlon Sprint and Full Distances (XTT Sprint & XTT Full)

First out of the water and onto the bike course in the XTT Full was Cedric LASSONDE, who went on to finish second overall, with Tim McDowell beating him to first place.

And there were plenty of smiles at the finish from those completing the triathlons.

And a big thumbs up for everyone who competed during the 2009 For Goodness Shakes! Extreme Terrain Festival organised by All About Triathlons .
The post race For Goodness Shakes ! Drinks and free hot dogs helped with the recovery and the event technical T-shirts were popular.

This weekend I was mostly Triathlon

So, what did you do at the weekend ?

It is the timeless question of work colleagues over the first cuppa of the Monday morning.

Did you see the grand prix?, watch the footy, the 6-0 drubbing, any of the cricket ? some of the Golf, or the Rugby ? Stade Francais only managed a draw 9-9 if you're wondering.

Hell no, you were out there doing it, you're not some couch potato (ok, you might have made it home for the Grand Prix).

Now back behind the desk after another summers fun in the sun (how long can it go on for ?) you're probably reading this by email and thinking, "hmmm. This weekend I was mostly triathlon".

Good or bad triathlon doesn't really come into it, and only you can judge the circumstances for yourselves. Perhaps you were more 10k ? or Half marathon ? a Wedding ? Whatever you were up to - brilliant ! Make the most of it whilst it lasts.

So for ourselves, it was Extreme Terrain Festival, (here's a peek at their Finish line flagging)

and the Inaugral Hever Castle Triathlon.

This is where the lady of the lake appeared to King Arthur., Or it was the Hever Castle lake at about 7.30am on Sunday. You decide. It was misty, it burnt off just in time for the start. The Swan wasn't to pleased about things.

What did you do then ?

It's the last weekend of summer. Well it must be according to the weather forecast, as surely it can't go on any longer.

With air temperatures dropping in the evenings now if it gets above 16degC then it's officially "warm and pleasant" to be doing sport. Saturday and Sunday therefore are perfect conditions for a nice triathlon or half marathon.. I'm hoping that my achillies sorts itself out soon as I'm itching to run at the moment and swimming isn't the same.

The past week and weekend ahead has been a busy one, with me covering a third wedding in as many weeks (and last one for the year!) and the fun that is Sevenoaks Triathlon safely onto the gallery, as well as the Ditchling v Sussex Sharks Cricket (their last victory of the year - don't mention Nottingham and relegation) safely in the bag (and now online - click the link below), it's a weekend of triathlon and half marathon.

If you are still wondering what to do ? with the last gasps of beautiful weather the only local option really is the Firle Half Marathon, or 10k - up onto the downs and around and back down. Fantastic views from the top and a lovely estate to start and finish in. Click on the link below for that one - Raw Energy Pursuits do a lovely event.

Both the triathlons on saturday and sunday are fully booked out, the XTF is touted as the largest off road triathlon of the year in the UK with over 800 entrants this year, and the new Hever Castle triathlon has over 1000 entries on Sunday - the first time a triathlon has been held in the lake and grounds around Hever and the Kent roads. The Princes trust is the headline benficiary from this event so hopefully they will be able to expand the series around other castles and counties of the UK.

Archiving frenzy: I will also point out to those long term subscribers - we are going to have a large cull of events to make space for this weekend on the gallery, so if you can see any events from May or June still showing on the gallery (and there are a few) don't get caught out - as tomorrow is likely to be the last day to view and order. Archive reloads take more time and therefore more money than original gallery loads so save yourself some money and time and please order them whilst they are still available...

The Sevenoaks Autumn Sprint Tri 2009

As the mornings draw out and the evenings draw in, the end of the triathlon season is upon us once more.

The annual end of season burn-up that is the Sevenoaks Autumn Triathlon has produced yet another great event, whether it's your zillionth time on this course or your first, everyone seems to enjoy the experience there.

With slightly non-standard distances on the run you're never going to set a standard sprint tri PB, and certainly not with the hills on the bike course (or the Run for that matter) - if you want PB - go flat - go to Dorney lake ! Here it's about the taking part, the personal challenge, the righting of previous wrongs in April, and the last ditch effort to set a marker for the years achievements that was the 2009 season. Also the chance to win a computer seems to keep the assembled attention for the prize draw at the end - a computer, a holiday or a wetsuit, some watches, gatorade, ForGoodnessShakes, the list was thankfully not endless, but it seemed like it !

THE most important job of the day - coffee for the marshals and volunteers. So strong you would have failed a drug test if you'd been competing. Thank you 7Oaks tri - I needed that after four hours of broken sleep.

Always keep a cheerful face on the events in transition, and help people navigate the maze of racking to their bikes...

Not even 7am and it's off for a bike ride in your swimsuit - it was so dark the start had been delayed 10 minutes, it took until about 8.30am until I turned the flash off on the camera.

"I've seen some things in my time as a ref.." said the Triathlete from Ashford masquerading as a Race Referee recounted tales of valour in transition after he'd had a second cup of Java..

Turned the wrong way at transition ? Don't limbo the racking, especially not *right* in front of the race director... (I think you got away with it!)

There was an interesting debate at the club photo at the end - was Club kit compulsory or not ? According to the detailed instructions the chief marshal was the only person allowed to wear his Hi-Viz jacket, much to some discussion and debate on the front row...

Portsmouth AC Victory 5

The Portsmouth Victory 5 took place at the earlier time of September this year at the Mountbatten track at the start of Autumn sun, as opposed to at the December ice-rink of death that was last year.

A good turn out for the Junior Races and Senior Races resulted in a lot of very fast times across the extremely flat course around the river estuary banks and back to the track. I know of at least 20 PBs being broken this year, there were many many more in the ideal conditions.

Loton Park Hill Climb Gallery

Last weekend saw a new Photographer using the Sussex Sport Photography Gallery. Alex Macleod was covering the Loton Park Speed Hill climb Weekend on both days.

Sunday 20th September - a busy one

With the weekend getting closer, kids back at school and the weather just turning that few degrees towards Autumn as the nights start to draw in that little bit earlier, the september race regulars start to crop up.

The Portsmouth Victory 5
This weekend sees the Victory 5 over at Portsmouth getting moved from its December slot - hopefully to avoid the lethal black ice on the cycling banking like last year.

It is probably the fastest 5 mile course in the world with the largest hill being the step onto the track for the start.
Also it's a relatively late start with it being 12pm for the juniors and 1:30pm for the Main race - so you can have a lie in and race on the same day. Things just do not get better !

Sevenoaks Sprint Triathlon
If it's september then it's the Sevenoaks (or 7Oaks) second annual triathlon of the year. A great tester if you used the April one to wake you up out of winter training, this is the barometer to measure yourself by to see if you actually did manage to get faster over the summer ?

Usually these triathlons sell out faster than a Madonna gig at the O2, and rightly so - you should read what they manage to get in the goody bag, the official prizes and then the Finishers lucky dip after-party prizes held at the end (if you slope off early you can't claim it!)

The goody bag is actually too large to carry -
"a special goody bag which will contain an Original Buff®, a copy of Triathlon Plus magazine, a Powergel and Powerbar from PowerBar, a bottle of Gatorade and Gatorade bike bottle as well as Adidas Action 3 Deodorant and Adidas Showergel."
So from this list I can gather, you will be cold, need something to read, probably hungry, thirsty and sweaty. Sounds like an ideal goody bag for a super hard and fast triathlon.

Not to forget as well you will be getting the same photographers who took Jenson Buttons photos when he competed in his first triathlon at Sevenoaks just last year - and they ended up in the national press...

So, professional photography, great goody bag, amazing after party prizes, fun atmosphere, more race number stickers than you will know what on earth to do with (Hint - put them on the front Luke), a triathlon by triathletes for triathletes - I mean - what else would you rather be doing at the weekend ?

I know what - perhaps a bit of 20-20 Cricket ?

Yep, if you fancy seeing Sussex Country Cricket team playing 20-20 - I mean - they are the 20-Twenty Champions for 2009 - then get yourself over to Ditchling Recreation ground for about 2:30pm on Sunday. It's all a bit hush-hush as they don't want to overcrowd the day out completely and that would keep it exclusive, but I'm sure if a few of you fancy a bit of a relaxing 40 overs of hard graft and high scoring leather on willow - get yourself there asap.
I do believe there will be drinks served - and if the weather holds up - perhaps the last Pimms o'clock for the year ?

Surrey Badger Half Marathon Photos are now available

A nice September morning greeted the 400 or so runners who lined up for the start of the 2009 Surrey Badger Half Marathon.

Ollie Laws of team Asics UK took the lead right from the off and finished in 1:15:33 some 9 minutes faster than last years winning time which was in the wet.

A nice downhill start from the centre of Leatherhead leads off into the beautiful Surrey Countryside, including a few hills and plenty of enthusiastic marshals !

First in the Vet Men age group from Thames Hare & Hounds powering round the course a little after the 5 mile mark and finishing in 1:21:43.

and the rest of the field followed on closely...

A strong finish from local athlete Bruce to take 5th place.
