Susan Boyle suffering exhaustion

Singer Susan Boyle was being treated for exhaustion at a mental health clinic Monday after taking second place in a TV talent competition that turned the humble church volunteer into a global star, the show's producers and a newspaper said.

Boyle was admitted to London's Priory Clinic on Sunday, a day after she finished behind a male dance group on the show "Britain's Got Talent," the Sun newspaper reported.

"Nobody has had to put up with the kind of attention Susan has had. Nobody could have predicted it," one of the show's judges, Piers Morgan, told breakfast TV show GMTV. "It has been crazy, she has gone from anonymity to being the most downloaded woman in history."

Boyle was favored to win the show's finals -- watched by more than 19 million people -- after a clip from her first appearance became the fifth most-watched in YouTube history, viewed more than 220 million times.

AKA star Susan Boyle got second position in Britain's Got Talent, 2009

Susan Boyle, the Scottish singer who came to public attention when she appeared as a contestant on the third series of Britain's Got Talent has had to settle for second position in the reality TV show.

When the simple Susan Boyle had first appeared on TV show's stage, the audience and the judges appeared apprehensive and judgmental of her unpolished appearance. But Boyle refused to change her looks and get-up to win fan-following for her impressive voice instead.

Street dancers Diversity were the surprise winners of television contest Britain's Got Talent on Saturday, beating favourite Susan Boyle who became an Internet phenomenon and global celebrity after appearing on the show.

The troupe, which includes three sets of brothers and comes from southeast England, won 100,000 pounds ($160,000) and the right to take the stage at the Royal Variety Performance in front of the Queen.

Of the 10 finalists, Diversity were the bookmakers' sixth favourite to win going into the show, but their acrobatic performance choreographed by 20-year-old Ashley Banjo was described by judge Simon Cowell as "utter perfection".

"If I had to give marks on that, that is the only performance tonight I would want to give a 10 to," Cowell said after their performance.

Boyle was runner-up, but so overwhelming were the betting odds in her favour that the result was seen as a major surprise.

The 48-year-old unemployed church volunteer from Scotland, who once joked she had never been kissed and has been described by newspapers as "frumpy" and a "hairy angel", was the antithesis of what many considered a celebrity to be.

Yet her rendition of I Dreamed a Dream from Les Miserables in April was downloaded on the Internet more than 150 million times and made her a household name.

Film crews camped outside her home in the small town in Scotland where she lives alone with her cat, tabloid reporters followed her every move and she appeared on US chat shows hosted by Oprah Winfrey and Larry King.

Pressure

The pressure appeared to tell this week, when she threatened to pull out of the show and had an altercation with journalists.

In his blog, judge Piers Morgan wrote: "Let me tell you now, there is a downside to fame. People start criticising you, sniping at you, trying to trip you up, belittle you, harass you. He said Boyle had learning difficulties after being deprived of oxygen at birth, and was nicknamed "Simple Susan" at school. "I am calling today for everyone to just give her a break."

Boyle sang I Dreamed a Dream again on Saturday, and while her rousing performance was warmly received, it was not enough. "You've had a weird seven weeks and you had every right to walk away from this and you could have walked away," Cowell said after she sang.

"You can walk away from this, win or lose, with your head held high, Susan. I absolutely adore you." Boyle, who praised Diversity after the public telephone vote was announced, said earlier in the show that the whole experience had been "well worth it.

"The pressure put on me has been overwhelming. I've got to put that aside now. When I step on that stage tonight it's the accumulation of 40 years of dreaming."

Despite not winning Britain's Got Talent, Boyle is widely expected to land a lucrative recording contract as a result of her global fame and impressive voice.

Susan Boyle at 22: The Way We Were 1984

noreply@blogger.com (Skywatcher) — Sun, 3 May 2009 08:14:00 -0700

Susan Boyle at 22: The Way We Were 1984

If there was ever any question, she's always had talent. In a 25-year-old video that recently surfaced, a fresh-faced Susan Boyle – just 22 at the time – takes the stage at a local Scottish club looking trim and youthful.

In the clip from Scotland's Daily Record, the Britain's Got Talent star sings "I Don't Know How to Love Him" from Jesus Christ Superstar and Barbra Streisand's "The Way We Were" in the Motherwell FC's Fir Park Social Club singing contest. Boyle, now 47, had been a late addition to the local singing team, Coventry Tam O'Shanter, after someone had dropped out.

"I can remember that she was a shy young girl, but also very attractive back then – she turned a few heads when she came into the club," school caretaker Gerry McGuinness, 61, told the Daily Record of her appearance, 10 years before she would take singing lessons. He was there for the performance and dug up an old tape after seeing Boyle on TV more recently.

"Even back then, I don't think anyone expected too much from her because she was so shy, but when she began singing people took notice," he said. “It's great Susan is finally getting some recognition. She is a great singer and it seems right that at some point she would get the credit she deserved."

Cyndi Lauper urges Susan Boyle to take film role

noreply@blogger.com (Skywatcher) — Wed, 22 Apr 2009 14:56:00 -0700

Cyndi Lauper says it would be "fantastic" if British singing sensation Susan Boyle accepted an offer to be in a planned film starring the U.S. pop singer and actress Tippi Hedren.

Susan Boyle, at 47, became one of the world's hottest celebrities virtually overnight after her rendition of "I Dreamed a Dream" on "Britain's Got Talent" this month with the clip already viewed around 50 million times on YouTube.

Lauper and Hedren are due to start work on dramatic comedy "Section B," a tale about Baby Boomers who put their lives on hold to chase their dreams. The film also stars Queen Emily David, a finalist on "America's Got Talent."

The film's director Darla Rae has asked Boyle to appear in the film and sing a duet with David.

"That's great, that's fantastic," Lauper said when told by Reuters about the offer to Boyle, a Scottish spinster with untamed hair and a plain-spoken manner.

"I think she's a kick. I really like her," said Lauper.

"She stated very clearly 'I always wanted to sing in front of a large audience' and as soon as she did she said 'thank you' and left, " she added. "She wasn't really interested in what they had to say. She did what she wanted to do and that was sing. That's what wonderful singers are like."

Lauper was being interviewed for her latest film "Here and There," which stars her husband David Thornton and in which she has a small role. The movie premieres at the Tribeca Film Festival this week.

Rae said in a statement on the website of her company Film It Productions, www.film-itproductions.com, that she has offered Boyle a role in "Section B."

"Susan studied at Edinburgh Acting School in the early '90s but was forced to leave and care for her sick mother. I'd love to help her finally realize her dream of being an actress! We've even sent offers through the local pub manager where Susan Boyle sings Karaoke," Rae said.

Boyle has appeared on Larry King Live in the United States and in countless newspaper and Internet articles.

Susan Boyle two new songs which we never heard before

noreply@blogger.com (Skywatcher) — Mon, 20 Apr 2009 14:09:00 -0700

Susan Boyle two new songs which we never heard before

The 48-year-old recorded two songs ten years ago and distributed them to only a handful of her closest friends in the village of Blackburn, West Lothian.

The recording, which was unearthed by Telegraph.co.uk, features two songs - an early version of the blues ballad Cry Me a River and Killing Me Softly with His Song, the track immortalised by Roberta Flack in 1973.

The recording was made at her own expense with Miss Boyle telling friends at the time that she had "spent all her savings" on it.

A friend of Ms Boyle, who gave the recording to Telegraph.co.uk, said she had forgotten about the tape until her friend shot to global fame.

The friend, who did not want to be named, said: "I had heard lots of stories of what a great singer Susan was but I had never heard her sing.

"So she came past one day and told me she had made this tape of a couple of songs – she said to take care of it as it had cost her all her savings to get it made.

"She said she hadn't had many made and had only given a few out to her closest friends in the village.

"I forgot about it then when I watched Britain's Got Talent I suddenly remembered I had it. I listened to it again and thought it was incredible that she had not been discovered until now.

"Now millions of people all over the world have fallen in love with her voice and I hope they get to hear this tape. It's an incredible story."
