It’s that time again, Super Bowl – I mean Super Tuesday – Party time.

On January 26, 2010, we’re going back to Oakland for the 48th Super Tuesday Party, where Dave Bach-y-Rita is hosting at his place a block or two from Lake Merrit. Here’s Dave’s digits:

We’ll have the usual fare for dinner, but let’s do it up right with the munchies. Here’s what we need:

• Chex mix.
• Beer, preferably Bud and PBR.
• Veggie tray. Make sure it has the blue cheese dip.
• Nacho chips. Like, Doritos.
• Or, your favorite football snack. Traditional is best.
• If you loathe football, then make it your baseball snack, hockey, whatever. If you loathe sports in general… well, that’s cool… just bring your appetite; all good.

Here’s the rules: No shopping at Whole Foods, Berkeley Bowl, Bi Rite, Rainbow or any other crunchy granola venue. Instead, find this stuff at Safeway, Lucky, Ralphs, Krogers, whatever.

Bring your favorite toppings, and feel free to get those anywhere you like.

Mixalot totally gets it. This month’s cocktail… Jack and Coke (no question). If you need a recipe, it’s easy: pour yourself a coke, drink some, fill it back up with Jack Daniels Black Label. Or just pour the Jack right into the can. We’re not picky.

This one takes me back to USMC days… really popular I recall in September ‘00. I put 5000 miles on my red 4×4 Toyo that month. That’s a lot of GnR on the radio. And a lot of driving too.

Ice-cold Blast from the Past

We’re going back to Super Bowl XX 1986 for this one. Bears vs Pats. I remember watching this game. What a rout, 46 to 10. And when The Refrigerator scored, we practically fell out of our chairs:

New NFL record: the first refrigerator to score a touchdown. What a game! Walter Payton. Jim McMahon, what a nut. Good times!

Welcome new Super Tuesday alumni Lydia S and Jee K. Lydia is connected through Dave’s startup crowd, and Jee comes to us through Walter and San Francisco meetup activity. Both Lydia and Jee have websites, so expect to see them linked from the alumni page (once I get around to it).

I Love/Hate the Internet

I suspect if people as recently as 20 years ago peered over our shoulders at work (and home), they would be appalled at what they saw: “Why is everyone staring into a TV? Aren’t they supposed to be working?”

It’s customary for the host to select the music; Sean will be treating us to The Seatbelts, the mastermind group behind the Cowboy Bebop soundtracks. From Wikpedia:

The name of the band, according to the fictional description given in the anime series Cowboy Bebop, derives from how the performers wear seatbelts to be safe while they play hardcore jam sessions.

Their style is very diverse and ranges from straightforward big band jazz, blues, acoustic ballads, hard rock, country, funk to electronic, hip-hop and experimental compositions/elements.

After being on the road all summer (and part of the spring), we’re back at Dos Palmas for a pre-Thanksgiving Super Tuesday. Just what you need to kick off the holiday season.

Cocktail!

Gobble-tini
Ingredients:
- 1 1/2 oz Smirnoff cranberry twist vodka
- 1/4 oz Chambord
- 1/2 oz cranberry juice
- 1 tsp lemon juice
Garnish: 3 cranberries on stick

Mix all ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice. Strain into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with 3 cranberries on stick.

Blue Six Aquarian Angel

Naked Music is a dance music record label, centered in San Francisco and New York City. It is known for smooth signature deep house and downtempo. It began life as a production company in New York, in 1992, when founders Dave Boonshoft and Jay Denes scored underground success with releases on indies such as Francois Kevorkian’s Wave Music, and UK’s XL Recordings. A string of high profile remixes followed with artists as diverse as Sade, Kelis, Maxwell and Britney Spears. Blue Six is the alias of producer Jay Denes, whose debut album, Beautiful Tomorrow, delivered a mix of deep house, soulful pop, and smooth jazz. In 1998 the production company became a true record label.

Check out the Aquarian Angel website too. This is about as “indie” as indie gets. If you like this stuff, buy it so they can make more of it.

Rangs and thangs…

Very big news…

Rowdeezy’s gettin’ hitched! Long time Super Tuesday partyers (bofem) may recall Row was our first Mixalot, slinging all kinds of crazy cocktails, from the sublime to, well… the not-so-sublime. But we learned something: there is no cocktail so bad that somebody doesn’t just love it! Row’s been crazy busy getting everything organized, I’m sure they’ll swoop through for a visit once the dust settles and the smokes clears!

The last Super Tuesday found a whole roster of new faces, including Mallory, Deanna, Ahang, Nicholas, Amy, Angela, Bonnie, Courtney, Scott and Chloe. Based on experience, we’ll see about 1/2 of these folks at least one folks sometime in the next year. Looking forward to it.

Speaking of the last Super Tuesday… the Bay Bridge fell apart early that evening, blocking traffic up for miles. So we lost the East Bay contingent: Mixalot, Scott and Jolene, Dav and Derek didn’t make it. All had to turn around. Bummer. We missed them. They missed us! And we had DJ NativeState spinning. We’ll try to get him spinning more than once a year. He’s got the Super Tuesday vibe nailed.

Niels Hoven is back in San Fran, lately from Seattle. It was nice to see him.

Sarah K is in Costa Rica, surfing in warm balmy water and scoping out the scene for a new venture. That’s her story to tell, she won’t be back until December.

Mumtaz is back in Dubai, work work work!

A bunch of us went to see alum Ismael Rodriguez open for John Fleming at 1015 a couple of weeks ago. Ish is good. He could tour. He should tour. He spins a highly danceable mix of deep house, electro and trance.

Ok maybe not so frosty here in the City By The Bay, but still, it’s that time again to play dress up.

And time for another housewarming party!

Travis and Shai with roommate Quyn have moved from South of Market to Mira Park. Don’t know Mira Park? Oh come on! It’s between Glen Park and Mira Loma. Of course!

Their new place is like a chalet, a ski lodge tucked away in the canyon. They even have a great little deck, and I’ve seen a Peregrin falcon perched on the rail. Those are big birds!

Talk about fresh meat…

Last month at Walter’s in Emeryville was a total blowout! We had eleven (11!) new people attend: Bonnie M, Iche S, Haily P, Kevin TH, Leslie R, Natalie L, Wing Y, Lucy Y, P, Kevin, Tamara and Ralph. Daphne and Patrick came back for another visit as well. Prizes were won: Sean awarded two excellent graphic novels, one to Jeff and one to Jennifer. Would you like to win a prize? Tell one of your Super Tuesday hosts: “I wanna win a prize!” (email doesn’t count).

Excellent question!

Actually, a whole lot, but nothing quite ready for prime time yet… Travis and Pedro are working on some sort of stealth video project involving Youtube and Blip.tv.

Sean took a trip to Blog World Expo, having won tickets courtesy of Mashable for an excellent comment he left in response to their promotional post. Sean is cranking out the art as well. Watch this space.

Dave is working on website junk, and would be happy to bore anyone willing to listen (but not at Super Tuesday! No shop talk!). Fleet Week! Dave and Mumtaz watched some Angels from Cathedral Hill.

Sean and Dave went to see a production of Brilliant Trace at the Phoenix Theater. Superb. Very small, intimate venue for a very intense, intimate play.

Several of us found ourselves at Burning Man Decompression, Brizeyda and Dave Bach-y-Rita made it out for that.

Jennifer went to Reading, reports that it’s still there.

Oh yeah… Love Parade… uh… never mind.

Whoa whoa whoa! Stop the presses! It almost slipped my mind: Super Tuesday Founder Dr. Dave & wife Jessica are expecting! Woohoo! No word yet on whether they’re going to have a little Dr Dave or Davette, I’ll be sure to pass that on.

Some of us are going to 1015 on Saturday. Super Tuesday alum Ishmael R. is spinning from 11-12 (?). True Fiction is playing at Bay Area Theater Sports. It’s Improv. It’s good, and True Fiction only plays here 2-3 times per year. I’m down if anyone else is. Shows 8-10 pm 30, 31 October. Think of it as your pre-party. Tiesto is coming up late November. Talk to Travis or Walter for that date.

Ok, not muto, but we’ve seen Blu before. He’s at it again, this time with a partner. Still amazing!

It turns out that throwing a really small party is super-easy; call a couple of friend, grab a couple of steaks, party ho. Throwing a really big party is almost as easy: “Free Booze! Bring everyone!” Throwing a party where about 15 people – not always the same 15 – show up, is actually not that easy. So we send the emails out just a few days beforehand, which seems to work just right.

That being said… this one’s a little late this month.

Pitch Black Rude Mechanicals

I was hooked immediately.

Then they played Bird Soul by Pitch Black. Dub meets ambient, with melody. I love it. In fact, I went and bought the album on MP3. Pitch Black is out of New Zealand, and tours world wide. They came through San Fran in June. Had I only known!

Groovera.com is totally listener supported, and I’m delighted throw in my small monthly contribution as a subscriber. I would hate to lose this station!

Welcome new Super Tuesday alumni Sarah K and Aaron. Aaron is friend of Jennifer’s. Sarah has been promising to come for months… good to see her finally!

Sean has recovered from Comic Con and has entered one of his websites into a design contest. More on that next month when the contest kicks off.

Did you make it all the way down?

It’s time again to see who’s paying attention… and who ain’t. Dav Clark snagged himself a fifth of rum last month with a “Dude, where’s my prize?” This month, you’ll have to do a little better… For example, reading comprehension: tell me what the featured album is this month. It’s right up there, you can hardly miss it!

New host Jennifer M has graciously agreed to host at her palatial digs on the Richmond Riviera. Richmond has 32 miles of bay shoreline, most of which is totally unfamiliar by even die-hard outdoors people.

Close by: Nickel Knob, a totally unique view of the San Francisco Bay. I’ve never seen a picture of the City from the top of Nickel Knob, and that’s a definite lack. If you’re in the area a little early, or have a little time after Super Tuesday, take a walk up the hill. There’s a nice bench up there…

Also close by is the Golden State Model Railroad Museum and WWII era ship Red Oak Victory. Lot’s of nice, peaceful, offbeat things to do in Richmond!

Both, and more.

Staying with electronic music… this month we feature Armin van Buuren’s second studio release Shivers. van Buuren is a Dutch DJ, who came to music via an Oxford law degree (!?). He produces everything himself, and hasn’t ever employed sound engineers. Finding Armin on the web is easy: he runs a radio show called A State of Trance. Tracks can be purchased through his web site ArminVanBuuren.com.

Trance isn’t everyone’s favorite… it’s a bit of an acquired taste. Say what you want about fast tempo, four-to-the-floor beats, Justine Suissa’s vocals on Shivers are brilliant.

Travis, Shai, Row and I went to see Armin on Halloween at Ruby Skye a couple of years ago. Not a bad show overall, at least for us. Another young lady figured out that mixing vodka with pi^H^H whatever didn’t work so good. Fortunately, she hadn’t anything to eat beforehand, so all that came back up was the vodka… Here’s some Flickr pics (of us, not the vodka eruption).

More lawyers should follow Armin’s example and do something useful. Like make cool music.

Janet moved All I Want Is Chocolate to a self-hosted web address. This is a big step, and necessary for future business, should she pursue it. One step at a time. Go get some dessert!

Welcome new Super Tuesday alumni: Cheryl, Patxi, Sundiep and Vivek. Patxi, of course, was one of the main perps of years of parties and BBQs before Super Tuesday, back when he lived in wonderful, bucolic El Cerrito instead down in the South Bay on the Peninsula. He’s not too far from Janet, and it was good to see him. Sundiep and Vivek hark from the same time, and also moved south about the time Super Tuesday started, so this was their first as well. Cheryl is a regular at all of Janet’s dessert parties and holiday BBQs, and it was great to her at her first Super Tuesday as well.

As it turns out, Ben and Patxi had classes together at Cal. Neither one knew I knew the other. How crazy is that? See what you’re missing? We’ll see you soon, then you too can be a Super Tuesday alumnus.

Super Tuesday gets an occasional “Hey! Fair play!” from the ladies… “Why don’t ever have any hottie guys for us ladies?”

The short answer is because 1. Super Tuesday doesn’t swing that way, and 2. Super Tuesday writes the newsletter.

However, in honor of Janet’s excellent desserts, dedication to driving farther through rush hour traffic than most would even consider, and general good cheer, Super Tuesday took some time and searched for something nice, for Janet.

An old friend Berkeley engineering, Ben Bachelder, after 10 years roaming the world, is finally settling down in Berkeley with his partner Neoma. Ben was Super Tuesday “Guest of Honor” in absentia 2-3 years. Check out Ben’s page on Couch Surfing. It was great to see him again at his first Super Tuesday. Pat Lake, with guest Karen, made it over for their first Super Tuesday. Pat’s been following along for a year or so, and is a business colleague of Super Tuesday. Super Friends will be a new and continuing feature, with blurbs about new Super Tuesday folks: who they are, how we know them, etc.

BBQ means boilermakers

Since Mixalot is crushed with a trip to Hawaii (!?), we’re going to lower our brows and make it easy: boilermakers! Boilermakers are easy: open a long neck beer, fill it with bourbon. Repeat until you roll your 4×4.

Boilermakers go really well with just about anything coming off a hot grill. We’ll have lemonade or iced tea for those not wishing to indulge.

Not chocolate, still Hot

Ok, so we could waaaayyy too far the road we’re headed here… which deads ends somewhere around Hank III. Lucky for everyone else, Super Tuesday doesn’t actually have any Hank III. Yet. So, let’s not, and back up a bit. Keep it fun and all that.

It’s summer time, time for bright fun upbeat music. Hot Chip is one of those English pop bands that everyone loves to hate, and listens to anyway.

According to the critics, this album is the usual Hot Chip affair: brilliant tunes with a couple of “What were they smoking?” cuts mixed in. Here’s the Wikipedia take on “Made In The Dark“:

Made in the Dark is the third studio album from British electronic indie pop band Hot Chip. The album, of 13 songs, was released on 4 February 2008 on the EMI label. It peaked at number four on the UK Album Chart, number 25 on the Australian album charts, and entered at number 109 on the U.S. Billboard 200. Several singles have been released from the album, including “Shake a Fist”, “Ready for the Floor”, which reached number six on the UK Singles Chart, and “One Pure Thought”.

Have you been on the road?

Seems like everyone’s been on the road lately. Mixalot and I were in New York City a month ago, then she turns around and leaves for Asia for two weeks. Everyone’s doing it! Here’s an incredible time lapse series from “Eclectic 3.0: The Roads Less Traveled” by one Mr. Ross Ching, which he compiled from still images! Moving even further south…

In keeping with our theme, Super Tuesday presents Lila Downs “Una Sangre,” a collection of original and traditional Mexican folk songs set to modern, popular melodies. Ms Downs mixes songs in English, Spanish and (IIRC) Nahuatl on this amazing collection. Her interpretation and renditions of La Cucuracha and La Bamba are like nothing you’ve ever heard before.

Lila Downs Una Sangre

I first read about this album in the Aero Mexicana flight magazine on my trip back from Chilapa de Alvarez a few years ago. (Well, technically, between Santa Cruz and Yetlancingo…) One of the most amazing travel adventures I have ever experienced: 6 connections, with no more than 1 hour wait (at the Mexico DF airport) between connections. And that includes the wait on the BART shuttle and BART from Oakland airport. It was unbelievable. I traveled from deep in the heart of Guerrero back to Dos Palmas in 14 1/2 hours. Other than the Mexico DF airport, I didn’t wait more than 15 minutes for connections. I stashed all the tickets in a folder somewhere… I have proof!

My friend Shuchi and I were trading ridiculous, weird and over-the-top video links. This is what I got back for the Norwegian wing suit video 2 or 3 of you watched a couple of months ago:

Don’t get me wrong… I’ve been thousands of feet deep underground, climbed overhanging cliffs, jumped out of perfectly good airplanes, and ridden bicycles down ridiculously steep hills.

But I cannot form any mental image of myself doing 110 KPH on my stomach through tunnel in the Swiss Alps.

What’s New York without Jay-Z?

One of Super Tuesday’s favorite hiphop albums is Jay-Z’s Unplugged. I’m not really a big hiphop fan, and Jay-Z isn’t really my favorite hiphop artist, but this is a really great album! As usual, it will be slipped into the playlist around supper time.

The Roots are a Grammy award-winning American hip hop band from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They are famed for beginning with a jazzy, eclectic approach to hip hop which still includes live instrumentals. Their debut album was released in 1993 and they have collaborated with a wide range of artists from different genres, including Roy Ayers and Cody Chesnutt. The Roots have generated a great deal of critical acclaim and influenced numerous rap and R&B acts. On March 2, 2009, The Roots began a tenure as the house band on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.
