It’s that time again, Super Bowl – I mean Super Tuesday – Party time.

On January 26, 2010, we’re going back to Oakland for the 48th Super Tuesday Party, where Dave Bach-y-Rita is hosting at his place a block or two from Lake Merrit. Here’s Dave’s digits:
306 Lee Street, Apt 310
Oakland CA
(415) 823-2810

He’s at Lake Merritt and a 20 minute walk from the 19th street BART station.

7:30 or thereabouts.

(Note: Super Tuesday’s 4th Anniversary is coming. Mark your calendar for February 22, 2010.)

We’ll have the usual fare for dinner, but let’s do it up right with the munchies. Here’s what we need:

Chex mix.

Beer, preferably Bud and PBR.

Veggie tray. Make sure it has the blue cheese dip.

Nacho chips. Like, Doritos.

Or, your favorite football snack. Traditional is best.

If you loathe football, then make it your baseball snack, hockey, whatever. If you loathe sports in general… well, that’s cool… just bring your appetite; all good.

Here’s the rules: <ins datetime="2010-01-21T17:52:09+00:00">No shopping at Whole Foods, Berkeley Bowl, Bi Rite, Rainbow or any other crunchy granola venue</ins>. Instead, find this stuff at Safeway, Lucky, Ralphs, Krogers, whatever.

Exception: our host Dave Bach-y-Rita is making

home made ice cream!

Bring your favorite toppings, and feel free to get those anywhere you like.

(Note: Super Tuesday’s 4th Anniversary is coming. Mark your calendar for February 22, 2010.)

Mixalot totally gets it. This month’s cocktail… Jack and Coke (no question). If you need a recipe, it’s easy: pour yourself a coke, drink some, fill it back up with Jack Daniels Black Label. Or just pour the Jack right into the can. We’re not picky.

Music

Let’s see… what’s some good Super Bowl type party music… here we go: Guns n Roses, Use Your Illusion II.

This one takes me back to USMC days… really popular I recall in September ‘00. I put 5000 miles on my red 4×4 Toyo that month. That’s a lot of GnR on the radio. And a lot of driving too.

Still good! Rock and roll!

Ice-cold Blast from the Past

We’re going back to Super Bowl XX 1986 for this one. Bears vs Pats. I remember watching this game. What a rout, 46 to 10. And when The Refrigerator scored, we practically fell out of our chairs:

New NFL record: the first refrigerator to score a touchdown. What a game! Walter Payton. Jim McMahon, what a nut. Good times!

(Note: Super Tuesday’s 4th Anniversary is coming. Mark your calendar for February 22, 2010.)

The Super Tuesday World

Welcome new Super Tuesday alumni Lydia S and Jee K. Lydia is connected through Dave’s startup crowd, and Jee comes to us through Walter and San Francisco meetup activity. Both Lydia and Jee have websites, so expect to see them linked from the alumni page (once I get around to it).

December 2009 also found Sandra S and Jamie Lynn B stopping by for a plate of ham and snort of mulled wine. These ladies are Old Skool Super Tuesday, it was great to see them again. Come back soon!

Remember: Super Tuesday has an alumni page. If you would like to be listed, send an email with your particulars, we’ll make it happen.

Upcoming

Walter hosts in Emeryville. It’s the 4th Anniversary, Feb 22, 2010. If you only attend one Super Tuesday in 2010, make it this one. If you only attend one Super Tuesday ever… make it this one!

Jackie hosts in Berkeley on March 22, 2010. Jackie’s very close to the College and Ashby intersection. Easy to get to for everyone.

Scott and Jolene host at their Little Green House in Alameda on April 26, 2010. Scott and Jolene are very Old Skool Super Tuesday. Actually, they pre-date Super Tuesday, part of the “small circle of friends” Super Tuesday grew out of. (Prize to first person who knows that quote… without looking it up on Wikipedia). Scott and Jolene are a half block from Speisekammer Restaurant, very easy to get to from 880.

Sarah takes us back to Oakland on May 24, 2010. Sarah is close to 42nd and Telegraph, again easy to get to. We’ll be outside! Bring your grillables.

June is open? Am I missing something? Janet? Jeff? Ben? Someone? Anyone?

RSVP! RSVP! RSVP!

10 people! (ok, maybe 1 or 2 more…)

If you want to come, shoot back an email right away, we’ll get it sorted out. But we do need to know how many to feed.

Sean lives caddy-corner from the Ritz, right off Union Square at the corner of Pine and Stockton.

We’ll need a green salad, some sides and some munchies.

Holiday libation is mulled wine: wine, apple juice, sugar, and special Super Tuesday mulling spices.

News

This issue is very short. I have a stupendous head cold moving into my lungs. How considerate. Consequently, I’ve been pounding this out between the pounding in my head. Ugly business. It’s starting to clear up though.

Welcome to Rae, our latest Super Tuesday alumnus, brought as a guest of Dave Bach-y-Rita.

Sarah K is back from Costa Rica, with surf stories.

Alumni

We’re redoing the alumni page. Specifically, it’s being moved from the old site at ning.com to Super Tuesday Party Alumni.

If you don’t see your name on this list, leave a comment and it will be added.

If you would like your full name listed, that would be very cool, leave a comment. Likewise for a 160 character bio (if you’ve done it right, you could use your twitter bio).

You are also welcome to have several websites or social media sites listed. Contact any of us with details, replying to one of the newsletters is fastest and easiest way.

I Love/Hate the Internet

I suspect if people as recently as 20 years ago peered over our shoulders at work (and home), they would be appalled at what they saw: “Why is everyone staring into a TV? Aren’t they supposed to be working?”

Think about it. Who in your office doesn’t use a computer?

Then we go home and get right back on the internet. Mememolly has the gist of it:

When I saw she surfed through “Tales of Mere Existence” I knew this was the right video.

Music

It’s customary for the host to select the music; Sean will be treating us to The Seatbelts, the mastermind group behind the Cowboy Bebop soundtracks. From Wikpedia:

Music The Seatbelts – Soundtracks from the Cowboy Bebop series.

The name of the band, according to the fictional description given in the anime series Cowboy Bebop, derives from how the performers wear seatbelts to be safe while they play hardcore jam sessions.

The band performed the whole soundtrack of the anime series Cowboy Bebop and produced a total of seven albums and one live DVD. Their style is very diverse and ranges from straightforward big band jazz, blues, acoustic ballads, hard rock, country, funk to electronic, hip-hop and experimental compositions/elements.

After being on the road all summer (and part of the spring), we’re back at Dos Palmas for a pre-Thanksgiving Super Tuesday. Just what you need to kick off the holiday season.

Mix all ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice. Strain into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with 3 cranberries on stick.

The more things change…

The more they stay the same.

After some undetermined hiatus, Lev is back in action with Tales of Mere Existence. I think he’s hilarious, but, there’s no accounting for taste, eh? In any case, Lev continues to explore everyone’s favorite topic

Click here to view the embedded video.

Smooth. Very, very smooth

Blue Six Aquarian Angel

We’re staying with the down tempo/deep house/lounge vein with tracks from Blue Six’s Beautiful Tomorrow and Aquarian Angel albums. Blue Six is Jay Denes, who with a couple of partners owns and operates Naked Music NYC. Here’s what Wikipedia has to say:

Naked Music is a dance music record label, centered in San Francisco and New York City. It is known for smooth signature deep house and downtempo. It began life as a production company in New York, in 1992, when founders Dave Boonshoft and Jay Denes scored underground success with releases on indies such as Francois Kevorkian’s Wave Music, and UK’s XL Recordings. A string of high profile remixes followed with artists as diverse as Sade, Kelis, Maxwell and Britney Spears. Blue Six is the alias of producer Jay Denes, whose debut album, Beautiful Tomorrow, delivered a mix of deep house, soulful pop, and smooth jazz. In 1998 the production company became a true record label.

Check out the Aquarian Angel website too. This is about as “indie” as indie gets. If you like this stuff, buy it so they can make more of it.

Rangs and thangs…

Big news.

<ins datetime="2009-11-16T20:36:56+00:00">Very big news…</ins>

Rowdeezy’s gettin’ hitched! Long time Super Tuesday partyers (bofem) may recall Row was our first Mixalot, slinging all kinds of crazy cocktails, from the sublime to, well… the not-so-sublime. But we learned something: there is no cocktail so bad that somebody doesn’t just love it! Row’s been crazy busy getting everything organized, I’m sure they’ll swoop through for a visit once the dust settles and the smokes clears!

The last Super Tuesday found a whole roster of new faces, including Mallory, Deanna, Ahang, Nicholas, Amy, Angela, Bonnie, Courtney, Scott and Chloe. Based on experience, we’ll see about 1/2 of these folks at least one folks sometime in the next year. Looking forward to it.

Speaking of the last Super Tuesday… the Bay Bridge fell apart early that evening, blocking traffic up for miles. So we lost the East Bay contingent: Mixalot, Scott and Jolene, Dav and Derek didn’t make it. All had to turn around. Bummer. We missed them. They missed us! And we had DJ NativeState spinning. We’ll try to get him spinning more than once a year. He’s got the Super Tuesday vibe nailed.

Sean's Woodblock #1

Sean is blasting out fine art woodblock prints. He’s currently finished with 46 of 101 original and unique woodblocks. These are very cool, and he’s letting a few of them go for more or less postage. I have #1. Ask if you’re interested in owning one of these.

Niels Hoven is back in San Fran, lately from Seattle. It was nice to see him.

Sarah K is in Costa Rica, surfing in warm balmy water and scoping out the scene for a new venture. That’s her story to tell, she won’t be back until December.

Mumtaz is back in Dubai, work work work!

A bunch of us went to see alum Ismael Rodriguez open for John Fleming at 1015 a couple of weeks ago. Ish is good. He could tour. He should tour. He spins a highly danceable mix of deep house, electro and trance.

Halloween!

Frosty pumpkins!

Ok maybe not so frosty here in the City By The Bay, but still, it’s that time again to play dress up.

And time for another housewarming party!

Travis and Shai with roommate Quyn have moved from South of Market to Mira Park. Don’t know Mira Park? Oh come on! It’s between Glen Park and Mira Loma. Of course!

Their new place is like a chalet, a ski lodge tucked away in the canyon. They even have a great little deck, and I’ve seen a Peregrin falcon perched on the rail. Those are big birds!

Here’s the address:
82 Malta Drive
San Francisco, CA 94131
Find it on Google Maps.

Remember: Pot luck and RSVP. Just drop a line to any of the hosts.

Mixalot tells us we’re going with Screwdrivers this month. Simple, orangy vodka goodness. We’ll have a pitcher or two. Or three…

Talk about fresh meat…

Last month at Walter’s in Emeryville was a total blowout! We had eleven (11!) new people attend: Bonnie M, Iche S, Haily P, Kevin TH, Leslie R, Natalie L, Wing Y, Lucy Y, P, Kevin, Tamara and Ralph. Daphne and Patrick came back for another visit as well. Prizes were won: Sean awarded two excellent graphic novels, one to Jeff and one to Jennifer. Would you like to win a prize? Tell one of your Super Tuesday hosts: “I wanna win a prize!” (email doesn’t count).

“So what else is going on?”

Excellent question!

Actually, a whole lot, but nothing quite ready for prime time yet… Travis and Pedro are working on some sort of stealth video project involving Youtube and Blip.tv.

Sean took a trip to Blog World Expo, having won tickets courtesy of Mashable for an excellent comment he left in response to their promotional post. Sean is cranking out the art as well. Watch this space.

Dave is working on website junk, and would be happy to bore anyone willing to listen (but not at Super Tuesday! No shop talk!). Fleet Week! Dave and Mumtaz watched some Angels from Cathedral Hill.

Sean and Dave went to see a production of Brilliant Trace at the Phoenix Theater. Superb. Very small, intimate venue for a very intense, intimate play.

Several of us found ourselves at Burning Man Decompression, Brizeyda and Dave Bach-y-Rita made it out for that.

Jennifer went to Reading, reports that it’s still there.

Oh yeah… Love Parade… uh… never mind.

Whoa whoa whoa! Stop the presses! It almost slipped my mind: Super Tuesday Founder Dr. Dave & wife Jessica are expecting! Woohoo! No word yet on whether they’re going to have a little Dr Dave or Davette, I’ll be sure to pass that on.

What have YOU been up to?

I know you’re out there. One of you is in Tokyo now, teaching. How cool is that? Let’s hear about it!

Wanna hang out?

Some of us are going to 1015 on Saturday. Super Tuesday alum Ishmael R. is spinning from 11-12 (?). True Fiction is playing at Bay Area Theater Sports. It’s Improv. It’s good, and True Fiction only plays here 2-3 times per year. I’m down if anyone else is. Shows 8-10 pm 30, 31 October. Think of it as your pre-party. Tiesto is coming up late November. Talk to Travis or Walter for that date.

Muto returns…

Ok, not muto, but we’ve seen Blu before. He’s at it again, this time with a partner. Still amazing!

Click here to view the embedded video.

That’s very cool, and kinda creepy stuff these guys get up to. I really like the way the sun plays across the site as they work. We see many days work compressed into a few minutes.

Progressive Trance? Not an oxymoron…

Markus Schulz Progression

Couple of months ago, a few Super Tuesday regulars hit the Markus Schulz show at Ruby Skye. Now, I’m not that big a trance fan myself, but I can take it in small doses, and it’s fun to go out once in a while. And Markus Schulz is good. He plays a bit darker, moodier music than the typical trance you’re thinking of, a bit more melodic. I wouldn’t go so far as to say he’s straying into Deep House territory, but he has produced for Ben Watt and Everything But The Girl in the past. So who is this guy?

From Wikipedia:

Markus Schulz is a German trance music DJ and producer who currently resides in Miami, Florida, USA. He is best-known for his weekly radio show entitled “Global DJ Broadcast” that airs on Digitally Imported radio. He is also the founder of the EDM label Coldharbour Recordings.

So there you have it. Yet another top musician brought to you by Super Tuesday!

Upcoming Super Tuesdays

Fall is underway, winter will be here before you know it. Here’s where we’re going next:

Nov 24 2009: Homecoming at Dos Palmas

Dec 22 2009: Project Deacon, San Fran. Very small venue. RSVP mandatory.

Jan 26 2010: Open.

Feb 22 2010: 4th Anniversary.

You made it, all the way down!

You are definitely special. Almost <ins datetime="2009-10-22T15:52:59+00:00">nobody</ins> reads all the way down. They just look at the pretty girl, find out where the party is, and bounce away on their next little ADD adventure. Can’t blame them, really. I’m the same way.

Oh.

You were looking for something?

I see. Well. You might want to try NOT bouncing all the way to the end first… you might miss whatever it is you were looking for…

We’re back from Burning Man. At least, those of us that went are back from Burning Man. Those of you that didn’t go…

…we’ll see you there next year!

Walter will be hosting this month, in Emeryville. For those of you who haven’t visited Walter, his place is great for parties! Loft… huge picture window with a one-of-a-kind view (seriously, I’ve never seen a view like that from Walter’s loft anywhere else in the Bay Area).

Walter’s address:
1500 Park Avenue, #313
Emeryville CA 94608

By the way, do you get these little emails just a little too late? That is, by the time you get this email, you’re already triple-booked?

That’s our evil design!

It turns out that throwing a really small party is super-easy; call a couple of friend, grab a couple of steaks, party ho. Throwing a really big party is almost as easy: “Free Booze! Bring everyone!” Throwing a party where about 15 people – not always the same 15 – show up, is actually not that easy. So we send the emails out just a few days beforehand, which seems to work just right.

That being said… this one’s a little late this month.

Now, if you want more advance notice… that’s easy too: mark every 4th Tuesday on your calender as “Super.” There. You Have Been Notified. Just make sure to check the Super Tuesday Party website to where it’s located for the month.

If all that’s too much bother, subscribe to the RSS feed on the Super Tuesday web site. Each of the emails is published the morning of Super Tuesday.

The “Burning” Brown Cow

Something special and weird this month from Mixalot:
In a rocks glass:
1 shot Kahlua,
1/2 shot Maraska Kruskovac (pear liqueur),
Splash of Angostura,
Fill the rest with milk.

If this doesn’t work out, we’ll have beer and wine, of course. Usually with these things, one or two people really love ‘em!

You know you wanna watch…

Didn’t make it to Black Rock City? No sweat, here’s some video!

Click here to view the embedded video.

The crazy thing is I didn’t see most of what’s shown in this video, and most of what I saw… isn’t in this video.

Get Wild!

It’s customary for the Super Tuesday host to select the featured album, and this month, Walter selects Sharam. In his own words:

Sharam’s style of progressive house was the highlight of my Burning Man music experience. There’s world class DJ talent at BM each year, but he stood out by playing for the crowd and kept us guessing with a variety of beats and hooks all seamlessly meshed together. He’s now a regular on my Imeem and iTunes playlists.

From Wikipedia:

Sharam Tayebi (or known simply as Sharam) is an Iranian-American progressive house DJ and producer, forming one half of the Grammy award-winning DJ/production duo, Deep Dish. Being characterized by a distinct style compared to his partner Ali “Dubfire” Shirazinia who produces minimal house. Sharam has performed as Deep Dish featuring Sharam, when he plays as the different half of the distinguished Deep Dish sound. The name Sharam is of Farsi origin and it means Shame or Modesty.

News from the front

Welcome fresh Super Tuesday alumni Brizeyda C., Mercy R. and Ben P. We expect to see you back in the future. I try to keep up with everyone new that comes to Super Tuesday Party, sometimes I can’t remember everyone. If you’ve been to Super Tueday Party and you aren’t on the alumni list, drop a line. Better yet, make the next Super Tuesday and make your demands known: “Hey! Put me on the list!”

DJ Pedro now has a brand spanking new website! Yep. Pedro will spinning under DJ Native State in the future. Expect phenomenal stuff, take a look: NativeState.Net, leave a comment.

Super Tuesday (Dave) and Deacon (Sean) are in a Blog War. It’s a battle between Dave writing blog posts and Deacon making wood block art prints. Dave has more time… Deacon works faster (because that art stuff is easier of course). Dave is currently winning… because he’s (that’s me) writing the newsletter right now and says so. We’ll see. And you should expect to see some prints from Deacon soon as well.

What are you up to? Give us the low down next Tuesday. We’ll give you a shout out… with a link if you have one to share.

Upcoming Super Tuesdays

Summer’s over, Fall is imminent. Here’s where we’re going next:

Sep 22 2009: Walter Yu, Burning Man Pre-Decompression (Emeryville)

Oct 27 2009: Travis and Shai’s new home (The Chalet) in Mira Park neighborhood, San Francisco.

Nov 24 2009: Homecoming at Dos Palmas

Dec 22 2009: Back to Emeryville for Christmas Eve Eve Eve.

Jan 6 2010 (whoa!): Open. You host.

Did you make it all the way down?

Most people don’t you know. Most people reading this email get about as far as 1. the picture, and 2. the address. I know this because I can track click-throughs with this AWeber emailing software. Clever, right? But if you did make it all the way down, be the first one to tell Sean or Walter or me: “I made it all the way down!” and claim your prize!

Turns out inexpensive Shiraz goes real well with dogs, so we’ll have some wine uncorked as well.

We’re back at Dos Palmas as well. This isn’t an official homecoming, think of it as another stop on the summer tour.

Bar is open…

Super Tuesday has a couple of dozen open bottles of booze in various states of emptiness. We gotcher vodka, we gotcher gin, we got all sorts of hooch. Bring your favorite mixer(s), we’ll whip something up.

Post-It! notes are creepy

Super Tuesday Co-Founder and Alumnus Dr Dave sent this short animation our way.
Click here to view the embedded video.

Every once in a while you come across some music that resonates deeply. The other day, Shai pinged me on gmail with a pointer to Groovera, a local (San Fran) iTunes and streaming music station specializing in Chillout, Nu-Jazz, Lounge, Downtempo, Dub and Ambient tracks.

I was hooked immediately.

Then they played Bird Soul by Pitch Black. Dub meets ambient, with melody. I love it. In fact, I went and bought the album on MP3. Pitch Black is out of New Zealand, and tours world wide. They came through San Fran in June. Had I only known!

Groovera.com is totally listener supported, and I’m delighted throw in my small monthly contribution as a subscriber. I would hate to lose this station!

WARNING: This stuff is addictive… I’ve been buying tracks and albums based on the playlist!

News

Welcome new Super Tuesday alumni Sarah K and Aaron. Aaron is friend of Jennifer’s. Sarah has been promising to come for months… good to see her finally!

Walter figured out what to do with his eponymous domain name walteryu.com. Check it out, subscribe, he’s giving us whirlwind tour of fantastic civil engineering projects from around the world.

Sean has recovered from Comic Con and has entered one of his websites into a design contest. More on that next month when the contest kicks off.

Janet reports being phenomenally busy at work. This is a good thing!

What are you up to? Give us the low down next Tuesday.

Did you make it all the way down?

It’s time again to see who’s paying attention… and who ain’t. Dav Clark snagged himself a fifth of rum last month with a “Dude, where’s my prize?” This month, you’ll have to do a little better… For example, reading comprehension: tell me what the featured album is this month. It’s right up there, you can hardly miss it!

New host Jennifer M has graciously agreed to host at her palatial digs on the Richmond Riviera. Richmond has 32 miles of bay shoreline, most of which is totally unfamiliar by even die-hard outdoors people.

Close by: Nickel Knob, a totally unique view of the San Francisco Bay. I’ve never seen a picture of the City from the top of Nickel Knob, and that’s a definite lack. If you’re in the area a little early, or have a little time after Super Tuesday, take a walk up the hill. There’s a nice bench up there…

Also close by is the Golden State Model Railroad Museum and WWII era ship Red Oak Victory. Lot’s of nice, peaceful, offbeat things to do in Richmond!

Jennifer’s address:
52 Schooner Ct
Richmond, CA 94804

Mixalot does it again

Each Super Tuesday newsletter is creating from the flotsam and jetsam floating around my head on the particular day I write it. None of them proceed from anything other than vague notions, which are assembled on the fly to get what you read here. As you will see with my spontaneous and independently determined music and video selections, Mixalot hit the synchronicity groove dead on with this month’s

PINK JULY MARTINI
3/4 shot Cinnamon Schnapps
1 shot Bols White Creme de Cacao
1 1/2 shot Vodka
1 shot Cranberry Juice

If the Pink Martini doesn’t fit with Armin and Tiga, nothing does! Speaking of Tiga…

“What’s that sound?”

“I like that sound.”

“I LOVE that sound!”

Click here to view the embedded video.

“It’s the sound of mah shoooes.”

Lawyer? DJ? Does it matter?

Both, and more.

Staying with electronic music… this month we feature Armin van Buuren’s second studio release Shivers. van Buuren is a Dutch DJ, who came to music via an Oxford law degree (!?). He produces everything himself, and hasn’t ever employed sound engineers. Finding Armin on the web is easy: he runs a radio show called A State of Trance. Tracks can be purchased through his web site ArminVanBuuren.com.

Trance isn’t everyone’s favorite… it’s a bit of an acquired taste. Say what you want about fast tempo, four-to-the-floor beats, Justine Suissa’s vocals on Shivers are brilliant.

Travis, Shai, Row and I went to see Armin on Halloween at Ruby Skye a couple of years ago. Not a bad show overall, at least for us. Another young lady figured out that mixing vodka with pi^H^H whatever didn’t work so good. Fortunately, she hadn’t anything to eat beforehand, so all that came back up was the vodka… Here’s some Flickr pics (of us, not the vodka eruption).

More lawyers should follow Armin’s example and do something useful. Like make cool music.

News of the world

Sean is in San Diego at Comic Con, drumming up business for his Only The Valiant podcast. He’s climbing up through the search engine results.

Janet moved All I Want Is Chocolate to a self-hosted web address. This is a big step, and necessary for future business, should she pursue it. One step at a time. Go get some dessert!

Welcome new Super Tuesday alumni: Cheryl, Patxi, Sundiep and Vivek. Patxi, of course, was one of the main perps of years of parties and BBQs before Super Tuesday, back when he lived in wonderful, bucolic El Cerrito instead down <del datetime="2009-07-22T20:00:56+00:00">in the South Bay</del> on the Peninsula. He’s not too far from Janet, and it was good to see him. Sundiep and Vivek hark from the same time, and also moved south about the time Super Tuesday started, so this was their first as well. Cheryl is a regular at all of Janet’s dessert parties and holiday BBQs, and it was great to her at her first Super Tuesday as well.

As it turns out, Ben and Patxi had classes together at Cal. Neither one knew I knew the other. How crazy is that? See what you’re missing? We’ll see you soon, then you too can be a Super Tuesday alumnus.

Upcoming Super Tuesdays

We’re halfway through the summer season! Here’s where we’re going next:

Aug 25 2009: San Francisco, 3rd Dog Days at the DS

Sep 22 2009: Walter Yu, Ikea-By-The-Bay (Emeryville)

Oct 27 2009: Travis and Shai’s new home Mira Park neighborhood, San Francisco.

Nov 24 2009: Homecoming at Dos Palmas

Stop! Don’t read any further…

Who won May’s Super Tuesday Prize? Who won the June prize? Halloooo…? Is there anybody out there? First person at Super Tuesday (email doesn’t count) who asks me “Dude, where’s my prize?” gets July’s prize.

Yes, it’s that time again, Super Tuesday time. And we’re going south! All the way to Redwood City!

Janet, thanks for all the great desserts over the years!

After all these years, Janet, Queen of Dessert, is going to host Super Tuesday at Casa Chocolate. There will be a grill. There will be desserts. It will be balmy and warm, being in the South Bay rather than the East Bay. And it will be daylight… late.

Super Tuesday gets an occasional “Hey! Fair play!” from the ladies… “Why don’t ever have any hottie guys for us ladies?”

The short answer is because 1. Super Tuesday doesn’t swing that way, and 2. Super Tuesday writes the newsletter.

However, in honor of Janet’s excellent desserts, dedication to driving farther through rush hour traffic than most would even consider, and general good cheer, Super Tuesday took some time and searched for something nice, for Janet.

Actually, that’s all BS…

Do a search on Google Image for “sexy chocolate girls,” this dude comes up on front page. But here’s what is true: when I saw Mr. Chocolate Fingers here, I instantly knew he had to be the hot chick for Janet. And so he is.

Here’s the address:
1482 Ebener St
Redwood City, CA 94061

Around 7:30 as usual.

Remember: <ins datetime="2009-06-16T22:51:39+00:00">Super Tuesday is RSVP and pot luck</ins>. Everyone’s welcome, we just need to know how many to plan for. Contact details given at the bottom of the email each month.

New: Super Friends, and more

An old friend Berkeley engineering, Ben Bachelder, after 10 years roaming the world, is finally settling down in Berkeley with his partner Neoma. Ben was Super Tuesday “Guest of Honor” in absentia 2-3 years. Check out Ben’s page on Couch Surfing. It was great to see him again at his first Super Tuesday. Pat Lake, with guest Karen, made it over for their first Super Tuesday. Pat’s been following along for a year or so, and is a business colleague of Super Tuesday. Check out Pat’s freelance animation work at Pat’s Animation.

Super Friends will be a new and continuing feature, with blurbs about new Super Tuesday folks: who they are, how we know them, etc.

Super Tuesday would be delighted to add a website link on the the Super Tuesday website for anyone who has attended. Send an email with your link, we’ll get it posted.

BBQ means boilermakers

Since Mixalot is crushed with a trip to Hawaii (!?), we’re going to lower our brows and make it easy: boilermakers! Boilermakers are easy: open a long neck beer, fill it with bourbon. Repeat until you roll your 4×4.

Boilermakers go really well with just about anything coming off a hot grill. We’ll have lemonade or iced tea for those not wishing to indulge.

Backyards, BBQ and Boilermakers…

That’s 3 of the 4 B’s… what’s missing here?

Bubba!

Bubba’s missin’!

Super Tuesday had to investigate the matter of the missing Bubba. Here’s what we found:

Click here to view the embedded video.

(Note: Some of my best friends are bubbas, and this looks like a helluva great way to spend a Saturday morning. If you think I’m joking, I’m not. Ask Mixalot.

Not chocolate, still Hot

Ok, so we could waaaayyy too far the road we’re headed here… which deads ends somewhere around Hank III. Lucky for everyone else, Super Tuesday doesn’t actually have any Hank III. Yet. So, let’s not, and back up a bit. Keep it fun and all that.

It’s summer time, time for bright fun upbeat music. Hot Chip is one of those English pop bands that everyone loves to hate, and listens to anyway.

According to the critics, this album is the usual Hot Chip affair: brilliant tunes with a couple of “What were they smoking?” cuts mixed in. Here’s the Wikipedia take on “Made In The Dark“:

Made in the Dark is the third studio album from British electronic indie pop band Hot Chip. The album, of 13 songs, was released on 4 February 2008 on the EMI label. It peaked at number four on the UK Album Chart, number 25 on the Australian album charts, and entered at number 109 on the U.S. Billboard 200. Several singles have been released from the album, including “Shake a Fist”, “Ready for the Floor”, which reached number six on the UK Singles Chart, and “One Pure Thought”.

Check it out, it’s good.

Upcoming Super Tuesdays

Look forward to the following Super Tuesdays in the coming months:

Jul 28 2009: Party down on the Richmond Riviera with Jennifer Mikovich.

Aug 25 2009: SF, Dog Days at the DS

Sep 22 2009: Walter Yu, Ikea-By-The-Bay (Emeryville)

Oct 27 2009: Travis and Shai’s new home in San Francisco.

Nov 24 2009: Homecoming at Dos Palmas

Did you read this far?

One smart, good looking person read all the way through the May Super Tuesday newsletter, and won The Prize, which was a Lila Down’s Una Sangre CD as featured for May music. There may or may not be a prize every month, but there might be. It won’t always be a CD. Might be something else. Come and find out.

First person to ask “Who got The Prize at the May Super Tuesday?” gets the prize for June. No, I don’t know what it is yet. Ask and find out.

Super Tuesday #40 sees us on the road and back in Oakland at Jeff Suslow’s palatial digs. For those of you who haven’t yet joined us at Jeff’s, you’ve been missing out. There’s easy parking, easy access from 580 (Fruitvale exit), Andronico’s has nothing on the Farmer John’s a block away, and the back deck and back yard are stupendous. Jeff’s fellow householder Bob has a thumb greener than Super Tuesday’s and it’s always a pleasure to see an incredible landscape evolve over the last couple of years. I’m not sure if the figs are ripe yet, but if they are, they are delicious!

This May 26 2009, we’re featuring the <ins datetime="2009-05-20T14:41:23+00:00">Super Tuesday Taco Buffet</ins>. Yep, a whole table full of taco fixin’s. Plan your contribution accordingly!

Jeff’s address is:
2459 Palmetto St
Oakland 94602

(510) 517-5976 (in case folks get lost)

Take 580 to the Fruitvale exit, cross back under the highway (east), turn right just past Farmer Joe’s, then dog leg to the left up on Palmetto. Very easy to find.

Mixalot is back from her East Asian excursion… and ready to serve up an old favorite cocktail:
Margarita on the rocks

2 shots Sauza Hornitos Tequila

1 shot cointreau/triple sec

1 shot Freshly squeezed lime juice.

She’s hinted at doing something extra special with these as well… but she won’t say exactly what she has in mind. We’ll have to wait and see.

Have you been on the road?

Seems like everyone’s been on the road lately. Mixalot and I were in New York City a month ago, then she turns around and leaves for Asia for two weeks. Everyone’s doing it! Here’s an incredible time lapse series from “Eclectic 3.0: The Roads Less Traveled” by one Mr. Ross Ching, which he compiled from still images! The amount of work for something like this is staggering. View and enjoy:

Someone needs to hire Mr. Ching. Right away. You can’t buy this kind of talent! But you can read it at Eclectic 3.0: The Roads Less Traveled. And you should.

Moving even further south…

In keeping with our theme, Super Tuesday presents Lila Downs “Una Sangre,” a collection of original and traditional Mexican folk songs set to modern, popular melodies. Ms Downs mixes songs in English, Spanish and (IIRC) Nahuatl on this amazing collection. Her interpretation and renditions of La Cucuracha and La Bamba are like nothing you’ve ever heard before.

I first read about this album in the Aero Mexicana flight magazine on my trip back from Chilapa de Alvarez a few years ago. (Well, technically, between Santa Cruz and Yetlancingo…) One of the most amazing travel adventures I have ever experienced: 6 connections, with no more than 1 hour wait (at the Mexico DF airport) between connections. And that includes the wait on the BART shuttle and BART from Oakland airport. It was unbelievable. I traveled from deep in the heart of Guerrero back to Dos Palmas in 14 1/2 hours. Other than the Mexico DF airport, I didn’t wait more than 15 minutes for connections. I stashed all the tickets in a folder somewhere… I have proof!

The first person at Super Tuesday who tells me they read this far gets a prize. I have no idea what that prize is, but I’ll think of something between now and then.

We’re looking south at downtown, and can see bits and pieces of the Williamsburg, Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridges. Cooper Square is where Bowery meets East Village. It’s nice. Think “Mission Hipster” without the smug problem. Mixalot is actually here on the make-up business. Some serious stuff, make-up is. I’m just along for the ride.

Speaking of rides, Super Tuesday isn’t the only one “hitting the road,” but more on that later…

April Super Tuesday is back home at Dos Palmas for one last time before the annual summer Bay Area road show. Anytime after 7:30 as usual. Contact info below (in email, blog sign up over there to the right), as usual.

<ins datetime="2009-04-23T03:20:03+00:00">Now, on with the show.</ins>

We’re having (what else) Manhattans this April. Here’s the recipe we’re using:

Perfect Manhattan: 2 oz blended whiskey, 1/2 oz sweet vermouth, 1/2 oz dry vermouth, 1 dash bitters, garnish with maraschino cherry.

Quick quiz: How many Manhattans would it take for YOU to strap on a body suit covered with roller blade wheels?

What if you could strap on the roller blades and take your new suit out for a little spin?

Say, down a winding mountain road… in the Swiss Alps…

Hit the road, Jean

My friend Shuchi and I were trading ridiculous, weird and over-the-top video links. This is what I got back for the Norwegian wing suit video 2 or 3 of you watched a couple of months ago:

Don’t get me wrong… I’ve been thousands of feet deep underground, climbed overhanging cliffs, jumped out of perfectly good airplanes, and ridden bicycles down ridiculously steep hills.

But I cannot form any mental image of myself doing 110 KPH on my stomach through tunnel in the Swiss Alps.

Can you? Under the influence of how many Manhattans? Tell us next Tuesday.

What’s New York without Jay-Z?

One of Super Tuesday’s favorite hiphop albums is Jay-Z’s Unplugged. I’m not really a big hiphop fan, and Jay-Z isn’t really my favorite hiphop artist, but this is a really great album! As usual, it will be slipped into the playlist around supper time.

Jay-Z Unplugged

Here’s the Wikipedia lead for Jay-Z’s backup band The Roots:

The Roots are a Grammy award-winning American hip hop band from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They are famed for beginning with a jazzy, eclectic approach to hip hop which still includes live instrumentals. Their debut album was released in 1993 and they have collaborated with a wide range of artists from different genres, including Roy Ayers and Cody Chesnutt. The Roots have generated a great deal of critical acclaim and influenced numerous rap and R&B acts. On March 2, 2009, The Roots began a tenure as the house band on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.
