This is Uxua Casa, Brazil's latest hotel getaway. Tucked away deep into a quiet village, this place has a bar and restaurant that floats on water, a quartz-lined swimming pool, and bottom line - looks sick. What makes it unique is that it wasn't created by the locals or some interior design geek, but is rather the brainchild of 'Diesel' creative director Wilbert Das. Yeah, the same dude that sells you your fucked up jeans and tight leather jacket. For a guy who's made his name in fashion, it must take serious balls to start from scratch on a new venture. scroll below for more photos.

Aah..

Kate and Johnny are larger than life. You'd be hard pressed to find another pair of icons more influential to our style and culture. Take a stroll down Stanton street today, and take notice at how every young boy and girl attempts their very best imitation of either Kate or Johnny's style (from one era or another).

What I find most crazy is that for a brief window in history, these two actually dated. From 1994 through 1998, Kate & Johnny was the end-all of power couples. Among all their individual successes, this period gets buried deeper and deeper into history. But here I am, to remind you all once again!

What we can all be thankful for is that these two loved to have their picture taken. Alot. Though a reunion is out of the question, we can all live vicariously through these awesome photos, and pay homage to one of history's most badass couples.

I didn't even know that fires went up to '7 alarm'. Always figured that 4-alarm was the max, like the M.O.P. song

We haven't been too active here for like six months, but give us a break! The reason Sugarcraft is awesome is because our brand is well informed by all of the other crap we’re working on most of the time. Yes, this is my excuse.

Anyway, a lot has happened these past six months. Here's a quick rundown:

We first went off the radar the night of the VMA's. We convinced our friend Kanye, who had been four years sober, to have his first sip of beer in as many years in celebration of Beyonce's upcoming VMA win.

This didn't go too well, so we decided to lay low for a few months.

We next skipped out to Tokyo in October for some Windows 7 Whoppers:

Some weeks later, we attended this year's launch of the Space Shuttle Discovery:

This was also around the time when Chatroulette was invented. Naturally we were addicted, so we spent a few weeks chatting with the friendly people there:

After that, we invented the iPad:

Then we vacationed in Niagara Falls

And finally, we hit the studio again and got back to work in our usual way:

Glad we could catch up! We're currently hard at work on the Summer season. The time off has definitely served us well on the idea front, so expect some of our hottest gear to date in just a few short weeks. Until then, we'll start posting a thing or two on this blog, so start coming back again. Please?

Hey

Most people are familiar with DJ AM in the context of his celebrity status, but know little about his musical skill. AM never opted for the current fads in music or any of the overly techno stuff. Instead, his gift was his ability to integrate tracks that everyone loved and was familiar with, allowing him to play shows that even grandpa could jam to. Behind the booth, he constantly worked - always thinking ten steps ahead and never letting a track sit by itself for longer than 30 seconds without mixing something ridiculous into it. For what he did, he was the best in the business.

His mix here from Banana Split wasn't specially crafted for a mixtape or radio show, but was recorded live at a party. For just an average night on the job, his talent really shines through.

Before streetwear culture as we know it today existed, believe it or not, but.. people did still shop for gear. In fact, much of today's look is either directly or indirectly influenced by early 90's style. One of these influences came not from a streetwear brand but rather a series of products by Nike. As a supplement to the Air Jordan line of sneakers, Nike released a series of t-shirts that featured MJ and his unofficial hypeman- Spike Lee as the loudmouth Brooklynite 'Mars Blackmon'. The Mars Blackmon tees were unbelievably popular, and flew off of racks just as quickly as the Jordan sneakers themselves. It's hard to find decent pictures of them on the net today, but here are a few:

If you can't immediately tell the extent that today's brands borrow from these, then you need to get your eyes checked, fool. With photo prints, bold graphics, and catch phrases - the Mars Blackmon tees were 20 years ahead of their time. They were also accompanied by no shortage of bad-ass commercials, like this one.

After all of the internet hype surrounding this album for up to a year prior to its release, I sort of hated it before ever having heard it. I've always found her sort of boring and thought the early version of 'Stuck on Repeat' was weak sauce; the same for her covers of 'Time to Pretend' and Kid Cudi's 'Day n Nite'.

All of that changed.. Much to my surprise, 'Hands' is actually pretty good. Much in the spirit of Kylie Minogue or early Madonna, it sticks to very simple dance tracks that require little thought or brain effort to groove to. It's expertly produced, and they even give 'Stuck on Repeat' a face lift (its no longer 8 minutes long).

4.25 stars

the good songs: Meddle, New in Town, Stuck on Repeat, Earthquake, Tune into my Heart, Remedy, Hearts Collide, Click

Though she's all over the "blogosphere", this doesn’t necessarily translate into album sales. For an album this good, it surprises me why Little Boots hasn't achieved a decent amount of commercial success in the U.S., like her fellow English babes Lily and Amy. This likely ties into poor marketing, and being less outgoing than her peers. She most definitely should attend the Lady GaGa school of swag.

speaking of GaGa, watch this vid. The first ten seconds will suffice.

We typically don't go for the music video double-dip two entries in a row, but whatever.

'Kids' is an epic on the level of 'Thriller' or Beethoven's fifth.

if you think its weird that they would release this video so damn late, you're probably right. It seems like they let this fan-made video do most of the dirty work while the song was at its pop peak. 16 million views on youtube!

which do you think is better?

Kanye West - "Paranoid" (Official Music Video)

Posted by cake_moss on 6/04/09 @ 02:27

I'll preface this with a clip of Em on German TV last week. 9 minutes long, but hilarious and worth the watch.

On to the review. As most seem to agree, early glimpses of this album were no good at all. The singles were wack. So were the album tracks that were leaked on iTunes and blogs. There has, however, always existed a sharp contrast between the bubble gum tracks Em uses as singles and the harder songs he buries between them that cater to true hip hop fans. Maybe the best had yet to be heard. So I chose to approach the album with an open mind, albeit cautiously.

The verdict? I think Em pulls through in a big way. (Exhale sigh of relief). While there's no getting around some of the weaker songs, there are a few choice tracks on the album where Em's wordplay is as sharp as ever. They're his darker songs - those that touch on his drug abuse of recent years and are reminiscent not of the Em from 2003, but go even farther back to his style on the Slim Shady and Marshall Mathers LP's. These, in my opinion, make the album worthwhile on their own.

The so-called-bad songs don't bother me that much. It seems that because Em has taken better care of his life, for once there's less drama there to fuel his creative energy. He's no longer angry, there’s no beef with other rappers, and he's been off drugs and alcohol for over a year. Because of this, he's drawn on some of his older themes (i.e. killing people, his mom, drugs) as a canvas on which to try new and creative things with his flow and technique. As a result, yes, his topics come off as dated / over the top (which is what most naysayers are pointing out) but the rapper beneath it is as good as he's been in years.

In the end, because there exists such high contrast between the good and bad on this album, opinions of it are bound to be highly subjective. I just read a review that gave it a D+, which is way harsh I think. Whatever, I'm pretty sure that every one of you will eventually get a hold of this and form your own conclusions soon enough. Let me know what you think.

3.5 stars

The good songs: Deja Vu, Same Song and Dance, Hello, Old Time's Sake, My Mom, Crack a Bottle

Btw these mini Eminem posters were in full effect all along Broadway today.

You knew they were coming.. more Murder Death Kill pictures! First one comes from our boy Cain, taken at a gallery in New Mexico.

Very dope location, cooler than where alot of lookbooks are shot these days. Brownie points for the matching sneaks

next one is from James in Long Island. If I saw someone rocking an MDK in the pharmacy isle, I'd call security. They're definitely junkies pocketing meds for drug money. Props for including his boy in the background wearing a Chopped & Screwed tee with the robotussin bottle. Nice touch!

Anyway, these are cool, but enough already with trying to look suave and slick in your MDK shirts. Your shirt says "Murder Death Kill" on it; you're clearly getting no chicks today. For upcoming submissions, I'm really looking for you to put yourself out there - wear one to church, or your next job interview. Somewhere ridiculous. Then send in your photos. Also hit us up if you still want a free shirt, but big boys only (all we’ve got left is XL's).

Great Mixes part III - Diplo, Essential Mix @ Radio 1, 9/15/2007

Posted by cake_moss on 5/14/09 @ 23:28

Most of you are probably already familiar with Diplo. For those of us into the B-more/Electronic scene, Diplo is our lord and savior. His Essential Mix from September of 07 is a classic that showcases the extent of his bad ass skill. He successfully crams 70 songs into this set from every imaginable genre with ease, putting mixes from acts like Girl Talk to shame (Girl Talk's mixes are messy). Diplo pulls this off smoothly and without losing sight of his primary duty to keep the dance floor bumping.
