Chanel CEO Maureen Chiquet Uncovers the True Chanel

How crazy is it that I just watched the movie "CoCo Chanel" and all of a sudden, BAM!, the CEO of Chanel shows up at my school. You all KNOW I was the first one there eager to see what this head-woman-in-charge had to say. So here is my rundown/review.

Background
So, to begin, she starts with her Bio. She is from a small town in Missouri and at the age of 16 she fell in love with France. She went there for a summer and fell more in love with each day.

She explained that she went to Yale University to study Cinema with an emphasis in French Film (surprise). Her big punch line of her career path is that she "walked out of the LSAT." She recalls that she went to take the test because "that was what you were supposed to do" but after an hour in she walked out.

She moved to Paris upon graduation from college, got an internship with L’Oreal, met a French husband and then moved back to the US.

When she moved back to the States her and her husband moved to San Francisco because they "liked it." There she called the GAP to try and get a job in marketing. Since there was no marketing program at the time she became a merchant until 1994 when she was asked to work on the brand Old Navy.

In 2002 she went to work for Banana Republic and after a year she joined Chanel and had to go back to Paris for a year. She said she always wanted to work in luxury retail but exclaimed never knew much about it saying "I mean, I liked luxury clothing." In 2007 she became the Global CEO at Chanel.

Now, she wanted to inform us of the things she learned over the years, here they are for you summed up:

She went on to discuss being a woman in business and how we are comfortable when a man leads a company but we need to break out of that comfort zone. Followed by (here is the shocked) a large Chanel plug about the new stores, the line, jewelry, perfume, and beauty products.

What was interesting to me

What I found the most interesting is her (or Chanel's) approach to the creative end. She relinquishes all the creative control of Karl Lagerfeld, saying "what Karl makes is what will be in the store." She continues saying that Chanel is not the type of company that thrives on customer feedback, they basically anticipate what the customer needs, without the use of actual customer feeback ( or so they say). The discussion on the creative part of Chanel was very much Karl focused, and when asked what she would do if Karl were to leave, she didn't have a true answer. She said that Karl makes a lot of lines each season and he is happy here and he will be designing for a longtime. Yes, that might be true, but he may not be with Chanel forever. Clearly, they do not have a back up plan.

Critiques
As you can tell already I have my own critiques, but my biggest concern is diversity of opinion. Maureen claims that this company is not hierarchical but throughout the speech she hints otherwise. She says that they have work groups that have the ability to contribute their ideas with campaigns and what the customer wants. (First of all, they don't care about what the customer wants and she made that very clear.) She added that these teams don't get to make decisions, but they are important. Oh really? So what about the diversity of opinions and thoughts. The point of having work groups is to have a diverse group of opinions that held aim the product at the particular customer at each store, or is that wrong ? How do you strive for top quality customer service, when you really don't engage the customer on what they want and need? hmm

I am also concerned about diversity in campaigns. After getting to about page 17 of google images, I have found no one advertisement that involved ANYONE of color for Chanel ( most of my results included Chanel Iman but never in an ad). During the presentation she showed us some ads as well, still no color. I am wondering what is going on with that? People of color buy Chanel and there are some great models of color that could be featured in those campaigns. Where is all the modernity she was talking about ?

Final Thoughts
In the end, she was an interesting person with a diverse retail background (Old Navy to Chanel) but it is troubling to me that some of the things that her very brand and company "stand for" are not the things they are doing: like being modern and keeping up with the times with diverse campaigns and having a diverse amount of opinions. Don't get me wrong, I like Chanel but I think that the views of Karl Lagerfeld ( who is notoriously controversial when it comes to race and size) are influencing the company a bit too much.

1. Kelly Cutrone Her new self help book is out called If You Have to Cry, Go Outside ... And Other Things Your Mother Never Told You. This should be a valuable resource for those of us who want to blaze the trail to entrepreneurial endeavors and in our professional life in general.

2. Karl Lagerfeld

Our favorite , of course. Unfortunately the recession has hit him pretty hard, in addition to layoffs Karl has had to discontinue his denim and sportswear line after this spring. So sad, but does that mean a major sale come June??? Hope so!

3. Matthew Williamson

He will be launching a capsule line of menswear for the spring.

4. Plus Size Models

omg... they are taking this way over the top. Don't get me wrong, as a plus sized girl myself I am all for plus sized inclusion, but only when it's tasteful and smart. But this just is not.

Let's not forget the purpose of modeling is to show off the work of a designer whether it be jewelry or clothing. When they are completely naked, regardless of size, they are useless and such, should not be called models. Let's not lose site of our business.

Ralph Lauren Model Fired Because Too "Fat"

So apparently the today show has been a lot more fashion conscious ( they recently did a segment on the Black faced models in French Vogue), and as a part of their efforts they invited Fillipa Hamilton. She was fired from Ralph Lauren for being "too fat" at 5'10", 120lbs, and a size 4.

Here is the full statement:

For over 42 years we have built a brand based on quality, integrity and a wholesome American lifestyle. Filippa Hamilton is a beautiful and healthy woman that we have worked closely with for over 6 years and we consider her an important part of our imaging and branding. We regret that our relationship has ended as a result of her inability to meet the obligations under her contract with us. The image in question was mistakenly released and used in a department store in Japan and was not the approved image which ran in the U.S. We take full responsibility for allowing this image to run as this is completely inconsistent with our creative standards and brand values. This error has absolutely no connection to our relationship with Filippa Hamilton.

So, why is no one saying what the contract says? Wouldn't that clear at least some of the air with Ralph Lauren?

A few weeks before she was let go, this photo was released in one store in Japan. The picture was extremely photo-shopped. I mean honestly, was no one overlooking the photo shop team that day at Ralph Lauren?

Noticing their mistake, the people at Ralph Lauren removed the photo and took full responsibility to the damage they are causing the women's views on body image.

My thing is Filippa needs to stop crying. She had a contract, she no longer meets the terms, so she is fired. This is a business. She didn't go into this thinking " oh my body doesn't matter and this silly little contract means nothing," at least I hope not. She was fully aware of the expectations of her profession.

I am also kind of sick of people blaming ( COMPLETELY) women's body image issues on the fashion industry. What happened to learning values and morals in the home? Are you letting the media teach your children or are you stepping in and saying " you know this isn't real."

Also, I think people are forgetting the purpose of the model. A model is a walking mannequin. Their primary job is to display the clothing. They aren't even required to be pretty, because weird looking faces would allow people to remember the clothing. They also need to be very tiny for the sample clothing.

If you know nothing about designing, know that it is expensive.

Sample clothing is like a prototype for the final product. With prototypes sometimes you change it and some times you trash the idea all together. To make this process cost effective you want to buy small amounts of fabric and spend as little time sewing as possible. This is the economics behind skinny models. It is cheap to make a sample for these size 2 girls that may or may not be adopted in the collection. Now image having to buy 6 yards of cashmere at $200/yard to make a sample dress that was the size of the average women in America, a size 14. That is $1200 wasted on the possibility of a garment being chosen, just to make customers who don't even purchase the merchandise feel better about themselves.

Now I would rather buy 2 yards and make the dress as a sample, then find out people like it, and make more sizes. Now that it is a recession, budgets are tighter. Designers don't have the money to waste making big samples of possibilities. Cutting costs means smaller models.

The real problem here is the value people put on the career of a model. People idolize these women, and for what, because they get to try on nice clothes first? Most of them don;t get to keep the clothes . They also aren't treated like humans, but like walking dolls playing dress up. People in Japan are even in the process of making Robot models.

All this is just to say, think for yourself. The media put out what they think is beautiful, but you don't have to go along with it. Many guys/girls don't like super skinny or super buff bodies that the media glorifies anyway. I mean at the end of the day, do you know who is pushing this image on us ? Old, white, male executives who believe this is the way to be. They then to hire people who believe in their skewed visions and the chain continues. I don't know about you, but I will not be convinced by these people, and neither should you.

The Knock Off Wars

Ok, so lately things have gotten a little crazy with knock offs. I am guessing the reasons for this BOOM in the knock off industry is because of the recession, but I think that should be all the more reason why people refrain from knock offs. The designers of the original thing have to eat too, ya know.

Before I remember the knock offs being very limited to accessories, purses, belts, bracelets, and the like. But now a days the knock offs have soared to a new level. Stores are knock off clothing within the months of their debut on the runways. Up and Coming designers are learning the tricks to knock off early in their careers. ( Remember Jimmy from " The Fashion Show" on Bravo?)

The word knock off has such a negative connotation, you would thing the merchandise was being sold on the streets, but no. Huge chains such as Zara, Steve Madden and Forever 21 make their living from knocking off designers. They like to call themselves derivativities or imitatettes, whatever the heck that means.

The CFDA has tried everything they can to try and stop the knocker-offers, but the AAFA ( American Apparel and Footwear Association) would not support the bill they proposed, which would make it nearly impossible to get it passed in Congress. What the CFDA needs is some fashion driven law makers on THE HILL in order to help them tackle this problem that is growing bigger than ever in these tough economical times.

I believe that regardless of the times, knock offs should not be the go to gear for shoppers. There are stores that make very nice, original designs INSPIRED by the runway for cheap, like Payless or J.Crew. I know personally, I would feel more proud to wear something that was inspired than something that was blatantly copied.

Another alternative option is to go to stores that feature a low cost designers collection. For example, H & M partnered up with Viktor & Rolf, Matthew Williamson and soon Jimmy Choo. Target has worked with Isaac Mizrahi, and Kohls works with Vera Wang. Even Macy's features a lower priced version of Rachel Roy's designs. These are places that are embarrassing the designer and giving them a chance to reach a lower priced market while still remaining original.

I think fakes take away from a key aspect of high fashion designs: exclusivity. Now a days people want things fast and cheap, it's really a reflection of the times. To me, the moment I get to hold a real Birkin bag on my arm and claim it is mine will be a very special time in my life. But if I already brought 4 fakes Birkins from Sketchy McSketchum off the corner, then what would it matter. For some people, like me , it is a very touchy subject.

I can remember watching one of those hidden camera shows when I witnessed the most disturbing thing in my life. At a high end department store there were some men who were delivering merchandise to the storage. While in the back, the men where switching DESIGNER hand bags with fakes. Now can you image going to the store and laying down $1,000 for a fake. I would just die.

Just remember the people that are loosing out when you buy the fake instead of the original; the designers, seamstresses, stores, sales people. Instead of spend $5 dollars on a knock off shirt, why don't you save your money for a real piece of designer clothing that will last you forever. You can hand it down to your children and tell them stories about when you once wore it.

Also remember that designer clothing doesn't give you status, like some people seem to believe. Status is something that you earn, not something that you buy.

My Review of The First Philadelphia Fashion Week

Yes folks, you read correctly... fashion week came to Philadelphia. Expectations were high as we were all coming down off the clouds of New York and Paris fashion week. The location was a nice little armory that gave off a goth/churchy aura. Free food and free drinks ( alcoholic) were scattered throughout the venue. This was nothing like any other fashion week, obviously.

I have to say after experiencing only one day, I was mildly disappointed. Let me tell you why:

A) 21 and over age limit. Now I understand why this might have been a good idea, to keep out the children and to allow people to have drinks. However, you leave out devoted fashionistas that have not yet hit the golden age. Especially the college students, those of which may have wanted to support their fellow designers or the publications that wanted to cover the event. It wasn't like the venue was jam packed. It probably would have been beneficial to increase the body count.
Suggestion: 18 and older would have been sufficient.

B) Anything goes seating. Honestly, this takes away from the credibility of the show. I mean anyone can sit anywhere they wanted. People were saving seats with empty drinks and in between shows people were switching around seats. The VIP area wasn't even organized. Though the placement was pretty unique ( in the middle of the circular runway), unreserved seating just seems to be tacky. I even overheard some women saying they paid for $100 VIP tickets and had to stand the entire show because the seats were full.

In addition to the VIP seating in the middle of the run way, there was a VIP section that was on a raised platform off the side of the runway. As I stood in front all I could here was " I can't see, can you sit down, you need to move." It was just unnecessary chaos and disorganization.
Suggestion: Ticket Buyers online get reserved seating, tickets at the doors get a section of seating behind the reserved. VIP seats must be reserved prior to event.

C) No Dress Code. Now I know this is Philadelphia and this is their first fashion week but I thought this would have been a no brainer. There is no way I should attend an event with the title " Fashion Week" and see people in sweat pants and sneakers. I was just appalled.
Suggestion: Mandatory dress code that is strictly enforced.

D) The Models. Wilhemina modeling agency of PA ( an affiliate of Wilhemina, the national model agency) supplied the models for the shows that took place during fashion week. Now, during the student show, I was sure these models were volunteers from the school and I cut them some slack. However, upon finding out that these models were professionally hired, all I could do is shake my head in shame. I can honestly say two out of the about 15 where worthy of being on any stage modeling. I mean was there no practice time? Who are the agents/talent scouts for these people, because if it were my company they would be fired along with the models.
Suggestion: Go with Ford Models. period.

E) The Schedule. Now since these shows were all in one venue it only seems right that they be on a continuous, flowing schedule throughout the night. But that was not the case. The shows were to begin at 5pm, which they did, but there were way too many breaks in between. Real fashion week shows are between 15-20 minutes because people have lives, and they have to be on the move and Philadelphia Fashion Week should take their cues from that design as well. After every show at the Armory there were mediocre bands playing while people get more drunk and walked around the pop up stores. This also caused people to loose their seats and/or get back to their seats late, which just looked sloppy. I mean the "host" of the evening didn't begin to host until after the third fashion show, when people were about ready to leave.
Suggestion: Keep the shows going without interruption. Have the djing/bands before and after all the shows are completed.

F) The Fashions. I know I only went on Saturday, so this is based on what I observed personally, but the clothing was not up to par. If I were a designer I would not have left half of those clothes come out of my designing studio. The clothes did not fit the models properly, they were constructed poorly and some of them just missed the mark.
Suggestion: A screening process for clothing to be in the show. They have to meet a certain level of construction in order to be showed.

Ok I am not going to act like the entire thing was a bust because there were some good aspects that I think should be continued for years to come. Some of them are:

A) Food. Ahh food at a fashion show, how ironic right? Well, I happen to think it was a great idea. The food was actually delicious. My favorite was the Crab stuffed wontons, TDF ( to die for). They had min burgers, cheese snacks, onion puffs and they continued to bring out more varieties of food as the night progressed.

B) Pop up stores. This give the designer a good way of getting their clothes to the customer as they are seeing it on the runway. This works well especially for the designer whose clothes are only sold in select stores or for the up and coming designer. I was also delighted that most of the designers where the hosts of their own mini stores. It was great to see all the fashionistas mingling and bonding over leather jackets and oversized rings

C) The Venue. The location was prime right on the outskirts of Center City and easily accessible. It was also a great space to have fashion shows, it was edgy, dark, and vintage which are irresistible traits in clothing so you know it worked well as the home of Philly Fashion Week.

D) Website. I think the website was very helpful in understanding the events that were going on, getting tickets, reviewing the designers and seeing which days one would be most interested in. It served as a valuable resource for the event.

That was my review of the fashion week. I know people may say I was being too hard on Philly's fist try, but I believe that if you have prototypes ( NYFW, PFW, MFW, etc) then there should be no excuses for a below par event.

I mean I know Philadelphia is not exactly a fashion capital, but I do think there could be potential. There are great designers/ label that come from Philadelphia, one in particular that I wish was there ( Zahra Saeed), and they need to bring it harder next time.

I do appreciate the effort, though.

Chanel Iman: This Season's 'Must Have' Model

So honestly, I have seen Chanel on EVERY runway. This girl is getting more than her fair share of work and it all seemed to happen so fast.

Born Chanel Iman Robinson in Atlanta on November 30, 1989 she grew up in LA. She was signed on the spot to Ford Modeling Agency at the age of 12 after her and her mother just walked in one day.

The half African American, quarter Korean beauty walked her first runway in the fall/winter season after placing third in Ford Model's Supermodel of the World competition in 2006. According to her, things "just exploded from there." She was walking in shows for Anna Sui, Derek Lam and Marc Jacobs in no time.

She has been living the dream every aspiring model wants. She quickly was booked to walk for major, major designers like Jean Paul Gaultier, DVF, Oscar de la Renta, Dior and many others. She has done ad campaigns for Victoria's Secret Pink, GAP, United Colors of Benetton, and more. I wont even mention the amount of magazine cover she has graced, but Harper's Bazaar and the i-D are some high lights.

But her dreams don't stop ad modeling, she hopes to design, act, produce music, direct and all kinds of other things.

She is really a normal girl who like cheeseburgers and high calorie foods, gets tattoos without her agencies permission and she dates; I mean, just like you and I right ??!?! She even fears of becoming an old face in the industry so that's why she changes up her look from time to time. To keep it fresh. and that is understandable.

I know your thinking, well her name is so perfect. Well her mother had read a book about coco Chanel and was impressed by how she built her empire and decided it was a good name to give her. What a good decision that was.

I know I never write about models. But I just had to write about Chanel because I think she is really doing her thing with the undying support of her single mother.

And You know, if my line comes out and she is still modeling, I am DEFINITELY getting her in my show. No Doubt.

The Playful Marc Jacobs

Honestly, Marc Jacobs is THE man. Not only is he designing his own line, but he is also working as the head designer at Louis Vuitton. Needless to say, two fashion weeks per season is a lot, but it's also a huge honor. But what makes him worthy of these designer dream jobs? Let me tell you.

So he was born in New York on April 9, 1963. At the age of 15 he worked at an avant garde clothing boutique called Charivari. He went to the High School of Art and Design and graduated in 1981. Upon graduation he attended ( guess where) PARSONS! There he won the Perry Ellis gold Thimble Award in 84, the Chester Weinberg Gold Thimble Award and the Design Student of the year Award.

While at Parsons he designed and sold his first line of hand knit sweaters under a sketchbook label called Reuben Thomas, Inc.

He introduced his namesake line in 1986 and people quickly fell in love. So much so, that in 1987 Jacobs was the youngest designer to have even been awards The Council of Fashion Designers of America Perry Ellis Award for New Fashion Talent.

After graduating from Parsons he designed at Perry Ellis until his dismissal after he designed a "grunge" collection.

In 1992 Marc was given The Womenswear Designer of the Year Award. Rewards from his success began to pour in further in 1997 when he was names the creative direct of Louis Vuitton and developed the company's first ready-to-wear line. In 1999 and 2003 he was name Accessory Designer of the Year by the CFDA. In 2002 he was named Menswear Designer of the Year by the CFDA.

As one of the "Top 50 Most Powerful Gay Men and Women in American" according to out magazine, he has earned himself about 6 CFDA awards and countless other awards and rightfully so. His clothing is electric and timeless. I never get tired of seeing what he sends down that runway, and that is trully a compliment.

Not to say that Mr. Jacobs has had a smooth ride to the top. Not only were tabloids and other forms of media attacking him personally based on his lifestyle and looks, but they were not letting him live his life. He receives the attend that most designers never see in their lifetime, Jacobs has been treated like a legit A list celeb. It is no wonder he told the times that " I’m starting to get very paranoid as to why it feels like so many people are against me, personally, at this point,” Jacobs said. “Despite whatever rumors you may have heard, I’m not out of my mind."

Regardless of all the talk we usually all know whats REALLY going on. He recently shot down rumors that he would be doing reality TV. His spokesperson says that " It's totally false. It's been causing a lot of confusion." ( cough rachelzoehillsthecity cough)

There were also rumors going around about a bribery for fashion show space in exchange for work out equipment. The verdict: who cares. People pay tips for everything. It's not like he is doing anything unethical. He likes a space, he wants it, he does what he needs to do to get it, end of story.

Move over Calvin Klein , you've got some "controversial ad campaign" competition. Marc was also undergoing recent controversy for his ads that were shut out of the pages of Men's Vogue. Now doesn't that just sound ridiculous? The readers of Men's Vogue would probably appreciate these type of ads. Honestly, in the times that we are in now, who has the right the REFUSE advertisement money, are you crazy?

Despite all the negative energy that people are throwing his way, he is still rising to the top. I got the word that tomorrow ( October 7th) Louis Vuitton will show its spring collection live on it's facebook page at 2:30pm Paris time, so 8:30 am New York time. Friend requests people, FRIEND REQUESTS.

On a better note Marc is in a loving relationship with Lorenzo Martone, an advertising executive. In June of 2009 they announced they would tie the knot in Provincetown Massachusetts.

Thakoon Panichgul: Remember his name

So you know I absolutely had to write something about Thakoon P. who is the designer of two pieces Michelle Obama wore in the Pittsburg summit and a dress when President Obama accepted the nomination for President. Whoever she likes, I like... and as for Thakoon... I love. Let me give you some information about him.

This American fashion designer was born in Chiang Rai Province, Thailand and moved to Nebraska where he fell in love with photography. After graduating from Boston University in 97 with a degree in business he was offered the position to work as a buyer for J.Crew. But his time at J.Crew was short lived as he left to become a fashion writer for Harper's Bazaar and ended up studying at Parson's ( of course) for two years from 2001-2003.

His first line was put out in 2004 and the press went crazy. Michelle Obama and Sarah Jessica Parker were a few of the names that fell in love with is designs. The then 29-year-old designer quickly grabbed all the big wig fashion enthusiasts and they remain in his clutches. He doesn't exactly make the Avant Garde, statement clothing, but that is what his followers love about him. He has a minimalist, modern twist on things.

Thakoon was given the honor of designing for different companies such as footwear for Nine West in 2006 and White T-Shirts for Gap in 2008. He has even done a few things for Target in 2009. ( Seems like Target has become the " Must -Have- A -Line for department store... who knew! )

The moral to this story is that anyone can have a vision and if executed properly, it can be respected by others. Though Thakoon has been graced by the " Obama" effect, I still believe that with or without Michelle's approval, he has some great designs.

I want people to keep in mind that just because he dressed Michelle, it doesn't mean that he ONLY needs to make stuff that would suit her in his collections. His collections have been criticised based on the idea that Michelle Obama wouldn't wear them... well duh... he is not her personal designer. He makes special pieces for the first lady, she doesn't pick through his already made designs. Please!

Anyways... I love Thakoon and his courage to switch from the numbers side of fashion to the creative side. There isn't a lot of information on him, but I know there soon will be. Watch out for him, because I smell a CFDA award in the near future.

So I have been going through M.O.W. (Michelle-Obama-Withdraw) lately ... I mean what has she been wearing, who has she been wearing? Well I can tell you this, First Lady Michelle has a lot of diversity in her wardrobe with her pieces being designed by people coming from many different parts of the world.

Red Alert: Customize Your Own Louboutins

So I was definitely caught off guard with my workload at school this semester. So I have to limit my long posts for times when... just when I can.

For now I am going to hit you with some short and sweet posts ( I know you love those).

I just read this article in this cool magazine called Departures about this great, great idea of allowing people to have custom made Louboutins.

No, you are not mistake, CUSTOM MADE. Apparently at his France atelier, Madame Herbert is there to take appointments for brides to get their own custom Loub's. The place is called Minuit Moins 7 and it is located on the famous Rue Jean-Jacques Rosseau, the same street that houses all of high fashion's hot spots in Paris.

This shop has everything you need to make any shoe your little heart desires. Not a bride, not a problem. As long as you have the money, you can get the shoes.

Notice I have yet to mention the price. Well, that's because it's a little steep. The Initial mold of the foot starts at $3,400 and the total costs depends on how elaborate you want your shoes to look. But I have to say, if you have the money to invest, it's well worth it. Not only to you have a lower risk of DYING in your heels because they are made especially for you, but you also get a chance for Mr. Louboutin himself to help you come up with an idea for your special shoes.

I am going to start saving my pennies now!

The Infamous: Mark Fast !

28 year old Canadian designer Mark Fast just recently did the unthinkable and sent plus sized models down the runway. Don't be ridiculous, these ladies were US size 8-12. But really... all this press over these women who are still below the average size of American women, which is a size 14.

Not only was the press going crazy over the models, but his staff ( creative director and stylist) apparently walked out on him. Really? You are going to walk out on a revolutionary moment in fashion? Well he kind of needed them because, well, there were some wardrobe problems.

I mean these girls were very pretty women, honestly, I rather see these girls with curves like mine, than girls that only 10% of the world looks like.

When I become a designer, whether people like it or not, my models will have real bodies. What good is a garment if it only looks good on models? We are the ones buying, so we need to know how we are going to look in it. I want to feel like that with all my favorite designers, but sadly that's not the case.

Even though his dresses could have fit his models a wee bit better, Mark Fast still made an effort that many designers would believe to be taboo. I love the effort that he put in to diversify the runway, and I look forward to his next collection when I am sure he will make the clothes fit these models better, but I mean what can he do, his staff left him right before the show. I think he made a great first effort.

I also spotted a lot of racial diversity on his runway. I mean he went above and beyond with this one huh?

I know, I know, I know the guy we are loving to hate right now, Kanye and his girl, the one we are all for some reason in love with, Amber Rose.

Ok see now Celebrities, yall can't just do anything you want. These pictures do bring down the taste in this magazine. I mean this is not King Magazine. There is a different between tasteful nudity and what is being done here.

I am pretty disappointed because he did pick a FEW good pieces, but I mean come on, like Joe Zee didn't stop this?

I am sure Kanye had good intentions but I can not get down with this in Elle. I even read that Kanye tried to get her in a gown but she wasn't feeling that. I mean she wore a wrap dress to the MET... that's her South Philly roots there.

Remember, it's about the clothes people, let's get back to the basics, appreciating the people who know what they are doing and not those that earned their status elsewhere!

I appreciate Joe Zee and I love his work, don't get me wrong, but I do have a problem with his.... how do I say this... heavy interest in celebrity collaborations/fraternization which may cause the magazine to suffer. I mean he has entered onto The City when DVF decided to pull out... that should say something when the president of the CFDA decides reality tv is not the way to go. I mean... there is a reason that Anna Wintour hasn't done reality tv and doesn't usually "hang-out" with entertainment celebrities.

The Recap: Fashion's Night Out

I know I have been gone forever. But I have been super super busy with the beginning of school, shopping for classes and textbooks, meetings, and the most important event of all Fashion’s Night Out, which I am going to tell you ALLL about right now.

So I am on the 5 o’clock bus to New York, because of course I had class, and there is a lot of traffic and it starts to rain, which I am dreading because I forgot my umbrella. Thank goodness we get there and it is not raining.

I didn’t get to NY until 7:45pm, so I needed to do a quick edit to my itinerary I crossed off everything except Bergdorf Goodman where I had to see Andrea Leon Talley.

So I catch the F train and get down to 5^th avenue and the place is buzzing. I have never seen New York like this. People weren’t rushing to work or rushing anywhere but to the next store to see the festivities. People are dressed up in their best, most fashion forward clothing. Men in ball gowns, ladies in feathers and African style face paint, just the works!

So I get to Bergdorf’s and the line is wrapped around the building. So of course I am more than happy to wait because I have to get it, have to. So while I am standing in line I get the pleasure of standing behind two models and their friends. Hearing them complain about waiting kind of ruffled my feathers because I would do almost anything just to be apart of this whole experience and they just seemed ungrateful.

So while they were babbling on and on I see Yeohlee Tang. Now you cannot miss her tinsel-like grey hair anywhere. I am absolutely stunned to see not only a designer I wrote about, but also a designer period. So I do the whole fan thing and I am like “ oh –my-god Yeohlee, hi I love you” and she is like “hi.” In a really sweet way of course. So I am so happy that I saw her I forgot to get a picture, which sucks. So after she leaves I try to turn around and talk about it to the girls behind me and of course they don’t even know who she is, no one did. I am just stunned. Who are these people that do not know Yoehlee, she is like a celebrity to me.

Anyways while I was waiting in line I took these pictures of the window displays at Bergdorf. They are just as amazing as I told you about in my previous post right?

So I finally get in and there is a huge push and shove thing going on. The guards on the outside are much, much nicer than the ones inside; they are kind of dealing with us like we are criminals for wanting to come in the store. “ Hurry up, keep moving, do not stop,” they shouted the whole time. The elastic in my shirt even broke trying to fight for myself through the crowd.

Come to find out the crowd was for Rachel Zoe. People were dying to get pictures of and with her. Here is what I got

Ok so I get out of the rut and I am walking around Bergdorf, mind you I have never been there, and I was just shocked at the stuff I saw. I mean I wanted two of everything that was in that store. It was amazing. It made me feel like a celebrity to even look at all the diamonds and Dior.

After a brief crowd break, the thickness begins to pick up and it’s to see Andre Leon host a game show. I finally push my way through the crowd to get a few shots.

Now I so wish I was 100 lbs at this moment because I would be able to fit in these small spaces in order to get better pictures. I mean I just felt like I was blocking everyone and I could not get anywhere.

Anyways after that I did a little more strolling around the store, in love with the décor. I definitely was underdressed with slacks and a shirt… I needed a gown to be in there.

So as I am about to leave I see a camera filming an ultra skinny girl in cheetah print so I went over to see what was going on. There were no crowds until someone shouted “Nicky Hilton.” Then people began to scurry over. Here are my attempts of a shot of her …. I finally got one at the end.

I have to say standing amongst the models and fashion enthusiasts I will never forget the smell. The stench resembled that of breath that you get when you haven’t eaten in a really long time ( what I like to call hungry breath), coffee and cigarettes. Typical… very typical.

So I get outside and the line is even longer and the guards are telling people that the celebs were all gone so there was no point n coming in, and he was right because Victoria Beckam came as quick as she arrived, as did RZ.

So I wonder around looking at everyone seeing who I thought was famous, but it was too hard to pin point because everyone was dressed so nice. I usually gage important people by who is dressed the best but in the fashion world, they may not really work.

So I head to YSL because I love him and their clothes. There are no celebs there but the champagne was flowing and they were not carding people. I didn’t drink of course, because I was working lol ( this blog is work).

YSL had a cool DJ and they had a raffle for a purse, which I wish I would win. I even saw a Hermes bag in real life and it was HUGE! The guy who wore it was WORKING IT. Look at the accessories!

After that I head to COACH and see people drawing on purses which was cool, but again, no celebs and the crowd was kind of dry.

Juicy was pretty crowded but I needed to move forward so I just took a picture of the outside.

Escada, who is in the whole financially, had a cute window display of live models that were actually eating pizza and drinking water. I was pinched by an old lady who told me to write my number on a piece of paper and hold it up the window, because after all, we were in New York. Lol silly lady.

Chanel was pretty dry also. I mean I do not want to custom make a $3,000 plus purse. They also didn’t allow pictures. YOU SUCK!

So I was strolling to the less crowded part of the 5^th avenue shopping area and I see that PRADA was closed with a police officer standing guard… umm wtf. Why are you guys closed. You suck.

Around the corner was Tiffany’s, which had outdoor carpet. Mind you, it was raining off and on all night. They were giving away lemonade and coffee.

Over all I think that this was an event that was pretty well executed. I think it was a good idea to get people involved in something that is kind of similar to the all-exclusive fashion week. I mean if I cant be under the tents watching the models, I rather have them elbow me in the back to get champagne at YSL right ? ehhh

I heard about a bunch of stores that had very successful turnouts because they had a wide amount of celebrity appearances. I think this was an important aspect of the whole night. I walked by stores that had little to no customers, the sales people were even sitting down chatting because they didn’t make the effort to bring in celebrities. Example: Club Monaco

Some stores said they would have run way shows, but definitely only have a screen projecting what one might call a “fashion show” lame!

I didn’t get to experience as much as a I wanted because I was late but I think I got the feel for it. I appreciated seeing the people who made clothes and put them together much more than actual entertainers or celebrities. The rush of being surrounded by such great minds really made me excited about my field of interest.

Here are some suggestions for a better Fashion’s Night Out next year:

I do wish that some stores actually had sales on merchandise for the night because I definitely would have bought something, and people would have brought more.
I also wish there were like RSVP lists in order to control the crowd
I think there def should have been a dress code because it just seemed insane what some people thought was a good idea to wear.
I think there should have been designated busses or shuttles taking people to certain stores so that they wouldn’t waste time trying to walk or getting lost.
I think celebrities should be in every store and they should take shifts so that every store had at least one celeb at all times.

FNO Shirts need to be sold EVERYWHERE !

I absolutely loved this night, it made me want to be a New Yorker so bad. I hope that next time I go I will be able to go under the tents the next day.

FNO was such a success. I am so grateful for Anna and Michael for putting it all together. I mean it was kind of like I went to heave for like 2 hours. Running to catch the bus home that I almost missed doesn’t even matter to me.

Well I hope this inspires you all to attend next year. Because there def. will be a next year!

BJ, Betsey Johnson that is!

I have not been able to make a blog post in a while. But I am here today to give you a short and sweet ( with lots of pics) post on my first love in purses: Betsey Johnson.

A little anecdote: I got my first Betseyville purse from London when I turned 17. I fell in love with the quirky, cool designs she made. I went to her shop 5 out of the 14 days that I spent in London, buying every purse I thought I could not live without , both sale and full priced. I came back to the states and my purses were a hit among my peers. Girls all over wanted to know where I got my purses from and I was more than happy to tell them " Oh, they are only the hottest thing from London." Little would I know, Betsey would become insanely popular to the point where she started to sell her purses in Loehmans and other discount designer places... kind of bumming me out because that made my London originals loose their shine. But I still love them and I continue to buy Betseyville and Betsey Johnson Purses annually, only from her store of course.

So that's my little history with Betsey, let me tell you about her history.

Born in Wethersfield, Connecticut August 10th 1942, this new york based designer was making her original designs since the 1960's. Her inspiration, however, came from her desire to be a dancer and her love of the costumes.

In 1964 she entered and won the Mademoiselle magazine " Guest Editor Contest" and then landed a position as top designer at Paraphernalia a year later .

As apart of the youth quake, the 1960's Warhol scene, Betsey established her style with sexy silhouettes, hippie inspired fabrics, whimsical detailing and a great fit. If you ask me, her style seems to resemble that of Patricia Field very much.

Anyways, in 1969 she opened her first boutique called Betsey Bunki Nini.

In the early 1970's she became the creative director of Alley Cat which was a rock 'n roll clothing label.

She won a Coty Award in 1972, making her the YOUNGEST designer to ever received the honor, she was 30 years old.

After designing for other labels, Betsey teamed up with Chantal Bacon and started her current label, Betsey Johnson, in 1978. That same year they opened a store in Soho and in the early 80's opened up on Melrose Avenue in LA.

In 2003 was when the licensing endeavors began, giving her the opportunity to make shoes, underwear, belts, eye wear watches, jewelry, purses and much more.

Also in 2003 she visited Mexico and purchased a hotel and named it Betseyville. She visits there to get inspired and to work. She purchased a second house in Mexico and named it Villa Betsey. Both homes were featured in In Style Homes in 2005.

I bet you didn't know this: Betsey Johnson is a breast cancer survivor. She works as a strong advocate to fight against the disease. She was even appointed Honorary Chairperson for the Fashion Targets Breast Cancer initiative by the CFDA.

I learned some new information today. You all know that fashion week is approaching and everyone is doing all they can to get publicity. Well Betsey and Sharpie have joined forces and will make a sharpie shirt. Don't worry, she isn't the only one who will get to design with the permanent marker. There will be the first ever sharpie bar on select days during Mercedes Benz Fashion week where editors and attendees can get creative with plain white accessories, apparel and you can even draw on yourselves... but idk about that. Beginning September 15, fashionistas can visit www.sharpieuncapped.com to view some of the amazing Sharpie fashions and accessories, in addition to behind-the-scenes footage and an exclusive Betsey Johnson interview.

I don't know about you but fashion has gotten a whole lot more hands on and customer oriented lately... maybe because they want us to buy more so brands like Alexander McQueen won't sink like the Titanic.

Anyways Betsey has a daughter, Lulu, who was born in 1975 and inspired her freelance gig making Betsey Johnson's Kids, a line for children in edition to a line for men and maternity.

Lovin' Lanvin

Jeanne-Marie Lanvin was born in Paris January 1867. She was the oldest of 11 children. At the age of 16 she was apprentice milliner at Madame Felix in Paris. She then became a trained at Talbot before becoming a milliner in rue du Faubourg Saint-Honore in 1889.

It was in 1889 when she started her milliner store in Paris. ( By the way, a milliner is a professional dressmaker and refers to a type of store that sells dresses)

By 1914 she started her Couturier house. Lanvin is the oldest Parisian fashion house there is.

She married Henri Georges di Pietro and had a daughter who was an opera singer who would become the director of the Lanvin fashion house.

Jeanne became popular because of her children's clothing and was receiving orders from wealth families for their daughters. Soon enough she began to dress their mothers as well. She had a boutique on the 5th avenue of Paris and joined the Syndicat de la Couture which solidified her status as a couturier.

Lanvin even had a dye factory, shops devoted to home decor, menswear, furs, lingerie, and perfumes, the most successful. Her signature fragrance was the Arpege inspired by the sounds of her daughter practicing on the piano. All her shops and her home was designed by Albert Armand Rateau who was also the manager of Lanvin-Sport.

Jeanne died in 1946 and was succeed by her daughter Marie Blanche. Jeanne died as one of the most influential designers of the 1920's and 30's because of her intricate details in trimmings, embroideries, and beaded decorations; all of which were her trademarks. Her favorite shade was the forget-me-not flower color.

Today the creative director of Lanvin is Alber Elbaz ( who deserves his own blog entry, and will get it very soon.)

What is most important that we get from Jeanne Lanvin is her signature in making elaborate and detailed clothing that could never be copied. Her clothing is still a staple of elegance and status as it was when she began over 100 years ago. Thought today the company is not run by member of Lanvin's family and has even been acquired by a Taiwanese media baroness group led by Shaw-Lan Wang, Jeanne;s touch is never lost.

Now I want to show you what Lanvin came from and what it has evolved into. This is one of those lines that I could NEVER afford now , but I dream about all the time. You can tell that it was made by people who know what clothes should look like and how to sew together royalty, grace, and elegance and sell it in a perfect package.

I also know that Lanvin is not a household name like Gucci, Prada, Chanel, or Versace, but I think that says something about the brand. It is not out there for a show, I mean have you ever seen anyone which a logo'd Lanvin purse/hat/shoes or whatever? No, and that's the point. Exclusivity is in, and it never went out!

The Infamous Karl Lagerfeld

Anyone breathing should know who the name: Karl Lagerfeld. He is a design genius who has worked with and for some of the most well known people in the fashion and entertainment world. He is one of the worlds greatest designers and it would be a shame if all you knew about him is that he designed for Chanel. That's why I am here to let you in on his life because apparently it doesn't revolve around Chanel.

He was reportedly born on September 10th, 1933 as Karl Otto Lagerfeldt in Hamburg, Germany. Some speculation has been stirring around his birthday, some say it was 1938 but many sources have confirmed 1933. However, Karl doesn't want anyone to know his real birth date, he was even quoted saying "born neither in 1933 or 1938." He has one older sister named Martha Christiane and a half sister , Thea.

As for his last name, he changed it because Lagerfeld "sounds more commercial."

His father was German and made a lot of money from introducing condensed milk to Germany. His mother was a lingerie saleswoman in Berlin when she met her husband in 1930. His family was very wealthy. He was raised on a 12,000 acre estate. At the age of 4 he insisted on having his own valet because he liked to change clothes several times a day. His mom was kind of... I'll just say different. She didn't want him to wear glasses, though he needed them, because she said children with glasses are the ugliest thing in the world. She criticized his smoking because he had to show his hands which she believed where not beautiful.

Karl moved to Paris in the early 50's. He worked as a draftsman for a fashion houses. A draftsman drew pictures of fashions instead of having photographers. This made his drawing skills in tip top shape.

During the mid 50's at the age of 22 Lagerfeld was given the position as an apprentice at Pierre Balmain after winning getting second place ( to Yves Saint Laurent) in a competition for a coat sponsored by International Wool Secretariat. This was the birth of a rivalry.

A while after his second place win he told the press that designing coats was his list favorite thing to design and that he really loved little black dresses. But then, YSL won the contest for a dress design, beating Lagerfeld.

This led Lagerfeld to say that he wasn't very impressed.

After three years at Balmain in 1958, he went to work for Jean Patou where he was given a lot of experience. He designed under the know Roland Karl and his first collection was not very well liked. However his second collection was a great improvement. In the 1960's he made a collection with vary short skirts, the shortest in Paris and needless to say, people did not like it.

He decided that he had enough of Paris and moved to Italy to continue his fashion education. He didn't exactly go back to school while in Italy, he spent 2 years mostly on the beaches where he claimed to have " studied life."

He worked as a freelance designer for brands like Mario Valentino, Repeto, and Monoprix. He also was able to open up his own shop with the help of his parents.

In true Karl Lagerfeld fashion, outside of the box, he consulted with a lady named Madame Zereakian, Christian Diors's Armenian fortune teller who told him that he would succeed in fashion and perfume.

Karl designed for a Roman couture house called Tiziani founded by Evan Richards of Texas. When the brand decided to do ready to wear in about 1963 Evan and Karl sketched up 90 outfits. Karl remained with the company until about 1969 after bringing in fans of the label such as Elizabeth Taylor, Dorix Duke and Lollobrigida.

Karl freelanced for Chloe in 1964 starting off with a few pieces and ending up making a whole collection. In 1970 he collaborated with Curiel. His first collection with them was "drippy drapery elegance." There were velvet shorts and black ankle length capes. True to Karl's personality.

his Spring 1973 collection for Chloe got Karl a lot of press. He made the surprise skirt that was ankle length pleats and actually pants and he designed looks inspired by Carmen Miranda, mini bra dresses and short skirts.

He makes a lot of clothing that is inspired by people in culture. He line of Chanel that was inspired by Amy Winehouse.

In 1972 Karl worked with Fendi making furs, clothing and accessories. During the 70's he also designed costumes for theatrical productions. Being a costume designer really helps with your couture work and vice versa. No wonder he is such a genius !

In 1983 Karl was hired by Chanel's corporate head to reinvent the Chanel brand since the death of Coco in 1971. Karl was said to have a weird psychic connection with Coco saying that he could Chanel her to reinvent the brand, but he never wore Chanel himself.

Here is a quote for thought: Luxury is not the opposite of poverty but the opposite of vulgarity.

Karl had a lot of international success as well. He worked with H&M, Trevira, Wolford and Philip Colbert.

In 2006 he announced his launch of his new collection called K Karl Lagerfeld with T shirts and jeans. Karl has a deal with Dubai Infinity Holdings to design homes on Isla Moda, the world's first dedicated fashion island. Fashion Island?!!?!? Can we say SPRING BREAK!

Karl has done a little of everything. He is truly well rounded in the fashion and design world. However, he didn't become so renowned without a few hiccups along the road.

In the 90's Anna Wintour walked out of one of his shows because he hired strippers and an adult film start to model his collection for Fendi.
PETA had a some issues with Karl, of course because they have problems with almost every major designer. He believes that banning fur is childish and in a meat eating world it would be absurd.
He had a few problems with Heidi Klum saying that she was no runway model, that she was too heavy. He reportedly said she was a commercial model. Then stories developed that he did not say that and it was in fact a quote from Wolfgang Joop. Karl said that he didn't now Heidi because she never worked in Paris.
Karl did, however, give his take on Seal's skin, saying " I am no dermatologist but I wouldn't want his skin. Mine looks better than his. He is covered in craters."
Karl, in his interview as Coco Chanel in Harper's Bazaar, said that he ( Coco) was never a feminist because she was never ugly enough for that.
Karl was not happy with the movie Coco Before Chanel's lead, Audrey Tautou and told the press he would have rather Penelope Cruz play the part, this followed his anger towards the actress for wearing Chanel Rubber Boots to an interview. He said he was unaware that Chanel made rubber boots, inferring that her boots where knockoffs.
Of course there is some weight controversy. In the issue he believes that we should focus on the amount of obese people in the world rather than on the small amount of women who are considered underweight.

Speaking of weight, Lagerfeld lost 90lbs on a low calorie diet and turned this infamous diet into a book. He lost the weight because he wanted to dress differently and wear clothes by designer Hedi Slimane. Right now his ambition in life is to wear a size 28 in jeans.

btdubs ( btw) he met Beth Ditto and considered her a muse, and she is two of the things he doesn't like, fat and a feminist.

I really respect Karl for all the work he has done. He is definitely an inspiration to us all. I am really astonished to learn that he was not the best friend of Coco Chanel because how I have him associated in my mind is only with Chanel and no other brand. I mean he had a whole career before Chanel and he has his own thing going on while he is with Chanel. I appreciate his honesty and his ability to stay true to himself and what he believes in, whether or not the public likes it. For example, his list of 10 things that he CAN do without include: food, fat people, children, going to other places that involve people, going to other places at all, people who try to touch him, people who try to analyze him, the nineties, technology and the Internet, and love. If that isn't honest I do not know what is. He is very against the norm, he ever said he is pro-prostitution.

The Fashion Sanctuary: Bergdorf Goodman

Very rarely do we ever speak of the department stores that house some of our favorite designers, and some undiscovered gems. For this reason, I absolutely must tell you about some of these places that are pretty much fashion churches. We have to dress a certain way to attend, we must be respectful of what is inside, and we must pay the utmost thanks to the people who made all the clothing and accessories that surround us while we are in these sanctuaries.

Today we are gonna start with the almighty BG: Bergdorf Goodman. In 1899 the company kind of started when an Alsace immigrant, Herman Bergdorf, opened a tailor shop just above Union Square in Manhattan. As an employee of Herman's, Edwin Goodman, purchased the store in 1906 and moved it to 5th avenue.

In 1914 Goodman became the first couturier to introduce ready to wear.

In 1928 the store moved to its current location at 5th and 58th. Goodman's son Andrew, who was the president, opened a fur salon, made a perfume called Bergdorf Goodman Number Nine, and created Miss Bergdorf, a line for younger customers.

In 1953 Goodman retired as the most celebrated merchant of his time.

During the 60's and 70's BG wasn't doing so well. They tried to build other BG's but only one in White Plains, NY was made in 1972 which was made into a Neiman Marcus in 1981. In order to pull them up from this slump they hired Dawn Mello in 1975 as the vice president of fashion.

Dawn was able to bring life to this conservative store making it more successful. She was named president in 1984. She left in 89 to work for Gucci and returned to BG as the president again in 1994. The CEO of Bergdorf Goodman today is James J. Gold.

So in the 90's the Chairman and CE Ira Neimark enlarged the women's store by 300% resulting in the men's store having to move across the street to the old FAO Schwartz space. Poor guys!

BG was just beginning to get bigger and bigger. In 1997, the former Goodman Family house, the penthouse at the top of the store was made into the John Barrett Salon and Susan Ciminelli Day Spa. More spas opened in 1999 under the main floor and a cafe.

Dramatic renovations took place in 2002 on the main floor of the women's store. This lead to the introduction of the new boutiques of Gucci, Chanel, Armani, Versace, and YSL in 2003. In 2004 their website launched to bring their goods across America. Though, I feel like it just recently got really good.

As you can see BG is like one the resting places of luxury. I mean seriously, they have Fur storage to hold your furs over the summer. Really? You even get the option of having your fur glazed. What on God's green earth does that mean?

Anyways BG has a lot of other unique aspects. Like their infamous windows. Some windows are dressed by regular sales associates whose bosses told them to do it last minute and give the sale associate get their pick of the clothes in which to dress it. Not here! BG's windows require way more work. I mean these people are wearing construction hats, to build a window display. YES! It's that serious.

This is a store that focuses more on the act of shopping, making it an entire sensory experience that you pay for through the prices of the clothing. However , to some, the experience is priceless and I think that everyone should at least experience the luxurious way of buying designer clothing at least once, even if its only a lipstick. The joy that one feels with the BG bag swaying from their wrists as they proudly walk out of the large doors is something that can not be described.

So the reason I think it is important to be aware of these stores beyond the surface level is because these are the places where designers are given their chance to shine. Though it is owned by Neiman Marcus, it still serves its own space in the hearts of fashion lovers everywhere. I also think there is a great deal of effort and thought that are put into the window designs that they should be admired by the world and serve as an inspiration to its onlookers.

This is a store that focuses more on the act of shopping, making it an entire sensory experience that you pay for through the prices of the clothing. It's All About The Birkin Baby!

Ok , so today's post is about Hermes. The title is just a little something I cooked up because that is what I think of when I think of Hermès. There are other things that Hermès should be associated with and that is what we are going to talk about today.

Ok so some history on Hermès. This label has been around for quite sometime. In 1837 it was first established by Thierry Hermès as a harness workshop in Paris dedicated to survey European noblemen. He wanted to make the best harnesses and bridles for carriages. People waited years for his designs the wait list was crazy.

In 1855 the company won its first prize in its class at the Paris Exposition. In 1967 Hermès won the first class medal at the Exposition Universelle.

So in 1880 Theirry's son(Charles- Emile) took over and moves the shops location where he introduced saddlery and began retail sales. Soon after they served the elite of Europe, North Africa, Russia, Asia, and America.

In 1900 came their first bag made for riders to carry their saddles with them.

After Charles retired his sons ( Adolphe and Emile Maurice) took over the company and renamed it Hermès Frères ( Hermes Brothers). Sometime around 1914 Emile got the rights to the use of the zipper for leather goods and clothing and was the first to introduce the device to France.

The first leather golf jacket with zipper was introduced in 1918.

Emile, as the sole head of the business, bred his three son-in laws to be business partners.

Hermès introduced the first leather garment for the Prince of wales. In 1922 the first leather handbags were made, the JACK POT for Hermes.

In 1929 the first women's couture apparel collection was previewed in Paris. However it wasn't until the 30's that Hermès really got the ball rolling.

In 1935 Hermès made the Kelly Bag ( Sac a depeches, named about Grace Kelly the new Princess of Monaco) and in 1937 scarves were debuted. This was an accessory that was made part of French Culture and still is to this day. During this decade Hermès also tried introducing its products to the USA through Neiman Marcus but later withdrew.

1946 marked the launch for Hermès silk ties and in 1949 the first Hermès perfume was made, Eau d'Hermès.

Hermès' philosophy by way of Emile was "Leather, Sport and a tradition of refined elegance."

In the early 50's the first non-Hermès born successor was leading the company. Robert Dumas was connected to the family through marriage. The 50's also brought the introduction of the logo with the carriage and horse and signature orange boxes.

In the 1960 Hermès tried again with Neiman Marcus, this time with silk scarves that were offered through a toll free number.

In the 19070 the company began to slacken in comparison to its competitors because it wanted to make products only from natural materials unlike other companies. At this time Jean-Louis Dumb-Hermès, the son of Robert Dumas was the head of the company and in 1978 he revamped the company by adding more product groups.

The new leader brought in designers like Eric Bergere and Bernard Sanz to revamp the clothing making python motorcycle jackets and ostrich skin jeans. during the 70's a new subsidiary was introduced in Switzerland, La Montre Hermès.

In the 1980's Hermès grabbed a tighter hold on their suppliers and launched themselves into the table wear market, which became its most promising business subsidiaries for the 90's.

In June is 1993 Hermès went public on the Stock Exchange. This equity sale helped alleviate family tensions about the business. In 1993 Laurent Mommeja ( a 6th generation Hermes descendant) took over the head of Operation for US business in Hermès.

By about 1995 the family had about 80 percent of the company and the entire family was on the Forbes List of Billionaires. Jean Louis Dumas began to decrease the Hermès franchises from 250 to 200 and increased the company owned stores to control the sales of its products. In 1996 they opened a company operated boutique in Beijing.

In 1999 Hermes brought up 35% of the Jean Paul Gaultier fashion house.

Things were smooth sailing until now financially. Jean Paul Gaultier eventually became the head designer at the house. Jean Louis Dumas retired as the leader and was succeeded by Patrick Thomas, the first Hermès CEO with no family relations.

WHEEWW !! That was a lot. Now with all this success and history you would think that I would hear Hermès mentioned by more people. I wonder what's that all about? Is our society too much into the flash of labels and not the actual product. I mean I have only ever heard Jay Z and Beyonce mention Hermès briefcases, Birkins, and boat shoes. Is that weird that I look for unique designer label mentions in music? lol

Anyways I can think of one why people may not be spilling their guts about Hermès: Oprah Winfrey.

Supposedly in 2005 Oprah was turned away from the Hermès boutique in Paris because they argued that they were having problems with North Africans. But the store also said they only stopped her from shopping because there was a private shopping event taking place. Oprah says she heard an employee say that she was just "one of those pesky North Africans." Now Pause... you don't know Oprah? One of the most influential people on tv? You must be crazy.

Anyways, Oprah felt like it was one of the most humiliating moments of her life. She canceled her $6,500 dollar order for a Birkin bag and called Robert Chavez personally ( the president of Hermès in American) and told him she will never shop from his stores.

Of all the people you could turn away from your store, you choose Oprah? Really. I mean I know high fashion has its race issues but seriously, all money is green and ultimately that's what these companies are looking to make.

Another problem with Hermès is that they are on PETA's bad side. So Hermes has an Australian Crocodile farm where it breed crocs for its famous Birkin Bags. So here is a quote from PETA on the matter:

"The thought of purposely breeding and killing crocodiles for an outdated, overpriced handbag should make any fashionista's skin crawl," the group said in a statement. "If Hermès really wants to be a leader in the fashion industry, it should stop killing animals for cold-blooded vanity and use cruelty-free mock croc and fake snake instead."

So the thing is, if people stop buying it then they may consider stopping this purse farm. However, people continue to shell out the $50, 000 for these purses which are pretty cute. I mean at a time when people can barely afford to eat are in the same city as the people keep Hermès afloat b buying these purses, its both amazing and insane. p.s. faux reptile skin is more expensive.

Despite these little bumps in the road, Hermes is still thriving in this recession. I mean they are expanding in San Diego in Fashion Valley in July of this year. Other places that Hermes is moving to are New York City fifth ave, New York City Soho, and Bellevue.

Honestly, how can Hermès ever fall off. The Birkin bag alone can support the company. People will never stop buying that bag. It's kind of like a status symbol. I remember seeing my first real life Birkin, it was everything I imaged it would be. Brightly colored, smooth leather with shiny metal, the whole shabang. I know that will be one of my first three big purchases when I get start to get my fat checks. House, Car, Birkin !

Let me give you the quick 411 on the Birkin because surprisingly enough, some people know nothing about it.

It was first made in the 80's for Jane Birkin. She was next to Jean Louis ( the CEO) on a plane and expressed to him how she needed a perfect weekend bag. He asked her to describe the bag and next thing you know she received her dream purse with a note.

Today the purse is a staple in handbag history. The price ranges from $5,000 to over 6 figures. The waiting list is about 4 years long because the bags are not sold online or in stores. The list is long because A. it takes 48 hours to make the bag, and B. Celebrities come first.

These bags are made of a variety of skins such as salt water crocodile and goat skin.

So now do you see what all the rage is about ?

I appreciate the legacy that Hermès has contributed to fashion. A family owned business that was founded on the hard work and dedication of a person with a dream. the family was persistent in ownership and top notch products and that is what made them so popular. The reasons they are thriving through this economic downturn are fairly obvious. There was no funny business in their company and they stay true to their label and not to trends and phases. their following will love them from the beginning until the end with no question.

We can all learn a thing or to from Hermès, in particular, just knowing the importance at becoming the best at what you do. They perfected their quests before taking on more feats and that contributed to their success.

btw. Hermes also got into a lot of different areas like boats, cars, and other aspects of luxury.

Fashion's Night Out: A Must Attend !

I have recently become obsessed with the event, Fashion Night Out. However, it has been brought to my attention that some people are not exactly sure what fashion's night out is, so that's why I am here.

Now you see on SEPTEMBER 10, 2009 until 11 p.m stores across the country will be open late in order to celebrate fashion and to get people motivated to shop.

Now stores, designers, and top magazine editors are pulling out all the stops to get people shopping during this unprecedented occasion. High Profile, A-List Fashion Celebrities ( and entertainment celebrities) will be sprinkled throughout the stores in New York in order to encourage people to spend, spend, spend. I don't know about you, I was on board just hearing about the vague details, but allow me to get specific as to what is really going down.

So you see how many people are on board. I mean seriously if Anna Wintour wants something done, it gets done and it gets done well.

So the list of stores participating in NYC is intense, 700 to be exact. I mean, you name it and they are in. But why wouldn't you be in, every serious fashionista is saving up all her pennies to attend this event... including me!

Ok so the best part is the participants. Not only are mostly all of the designers coming out, but Michelle Obama is said to make an appearance. I mean that is just the icing on the cake for me.

Anna Wintour will start off this shindig form the Macy's in Queens where she will be signing t-shirts.

See now the dilemma i have is whether to pay my September rent, or spend it all on fashion night out.. it would be supporting a good cause right because a good chunk of the money is being donated. However it is a bummer that there aren't THAT many discounts going on, but hey we don't have to buy everything do we?!?

This opportunity will be an awesome way to meet the people behind they labels that you adore.

Must Haves: Plus Sized Edition

Since I am technically a 'plus sized' girl that can wear clothing from a size 14 ( the national average) to a 16, and between a medium and XL. Needless to say finding stuff that fits is insanely difficult for me. Let's not even get started on shoes finding an 11 is like finding a needle in a haystack, but finding wide calf boots on top of that, forget about it.

So I'm here to give my larger sized fashionistas some hints on where to get clothing that fits and looks just like what we see in the magazines that we love. However, the robe tie coat is a very hot look this season and while some body types can get away with out, not all can. Avoid this coat if you have a really large bottom half.

Also dont be fooled by this "trend" you can definitely robe tie any coat that comes with a belt attatchment. Some coats are just made for this type of thing and others aren't. Be creative !

Blacks in Fashion... yes, again!

omg, did you miss me? I know I know! :-) I'm back now, so I have to give you, your blog fix.

So I have been thinking about my " Million Dollar Question" post on black designers after the huge/great response it received in addition to the release of the Italian Vogue " Black" issue. I am going to address both topics today.

So I am not retracting my beliefs that there are no black people doing what I believe we are capable of in the fashion industry, making it to the Gucci, Fendi, Prada status, because there aren't any. I just believe that black designers face a lot of challenges and disadvantages when it comes to the industry. As you have read many of the designers I have featured came from or married into money. Those who didn't, like Oscar de le Renta, had to work extremely hard to get to where they are. They also had strategic business moves and connections that helped propel them into popularity. A lot of black designers didn't have those luxuries, but some designers did try.

Aside from the few designers I named in my previous post, there are a few more that deserve mention. I don't want to forget to at least acknowledge reality TV designers, Mychael Knight and Korto Momolu from project runway. They were good designers and still are. They are both making a name for themselves in niche markets, Mychael in ATL and Korto making accessories.

The problem there is that they didn't win these shows so they really haven't had the opportunity to make it big like, say....

Christian did.

There are also the designers that I am not always too proud to mention, those are the entertainers/entertainers family members turned "designers." Now the reason I feel I need to talk about these people is that they made up the majority of " BET's list of Top Black Designers." Which included people like the Simmon's sister for Pastry, Beyonce and her mother for House of Dereon, Jay Z for Rocawear, Kimora Lee Simmons for Baby Phat, and the list started to taper off into the real "street fashion" like Apple bottoms, Vocal, and Billionaire Boys Club by Pharrell. While I am proud of all the designers for doing what they love and for what they have accomplished, I never believe in making clothing that I would never, ever wear. I know there is a market for everything, but morally I don't want to be responsible for young woman exploiting their bodies and some of these lines I think contribute to and profit from that epidemic.

Ok, so the list did include 3 designers that I think are worth mentioning, Sean Combs, Benjamin Bixby, and Tracy Reese. Now Sean Combs, believe it or not, is a member of the CFDA and has won an award in 2004 for menswear designer of the year. In case you don't understand what that means, no black people have won that yet, sooo. I mean we all love to hate him but the guy is doing his thing ! His fragrance 'I AM KING' won the Fragrance Foundation 2009 FiFi Award for Fragrance of the Year for men as well. He must have a great team helping him along. He also has the money to be the best and I'm glad he is taking advantage of that.

Benjamin Bixby, better known as Andre 3000. I just wanted to mention him because his style is so quirky and I love it. He also got into Barney's and was featured (positively) on The Cut blog. His line never got a lot of hype and is practically dead now, but he had a nice shot. He stuck to what he liked and he designed clothing that I know he would wear which is respectable. Do him a favor and buy his last shirt from Barneys.com, please !! :-)

Last but not least Tracy Reese. See now , our girl Tracy Reese is really doing her thing. She, too, is a member of the CFDA ( one of literally the handful of black people that are members) like Diddy. Well like many of the other successful designers, she studied in Paris as an apprentice. She attended Parsons School for Design and she also worked as the design director for the Women’s Portfolio at Perry Ellis. She has become known for her flowy, feminine dresses and vintage inspired separates that were and still are picked up by Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman and other high end boutiques as well as in Europe and Asia.

One of her dresses was also worn by Michelle Obama on the cover of People Magazine. This is a huge deal because First Lady Obama has come under a lot of heat for not wearing African American designers. She chose to wear one of the best African American designers she could find. In fact her hubby, Mr. President himself, wore a suit by Oswald ( remember, from my previous post) in Ghana. Now all the critics can calm down because they have done their part. It's not there fault there aren't many options.

Anyways, Tracy Reese has a profile on NYmag.com and everything. Her Jazz Age inspired style has been a big hit across color lines and I can only hope she continues to grow. Check out some looks from her recent lines.

Another designer that was not mentioned on BET's list, but should have been, is Edward Wilkerson. From the age of 10 he knew he wanted to design. He went to an Art and Design high school in Manhattan and then on to Parsons School of Design. He worked with top designers like Donna Karen and worked in successful fashion houses like Anne Klein and Calvin Klein. He received the honor from Donna Karan to become a designer for the Donna Karan collection. After working with Donna for 13 years he was fired, but later told he could join her again at anytime.

In 1998 he joined Lafayette 148 New York as Design Director. While at Lafayette he uses his inspiration from Africa and his passion for photography to guide him in the clothing creation process.

What I love about him is that he built up the Lafayette 148 and he also has plus sized clothing which don't look like crap. However, I do think his price points are EXTREMELY high for a designer that is not that well known. I also am very confused about Lafayette 148's ownership . No where does it say he started it, but merely he built up the brand. He didn't join until 1998 and it was started in 1996. With that said, I am strong advocate of ownership, and I hope that he has some in that company because his designs are great and I would hate to see him taken advantage of like so many other designers ( black and other races).

Finally, let me not forget to tell you how I feel about the black Italian Vogue. I think it was a good thought however if they wanted to give black people the chance in the fashion industry that we are so often denied, they could have done it all the way. I think it should have featured black designers, black stylists, black make up artist, black editors, and black writers. I mean, I know the Vogue people are giving us an inch and I am taking a mile, but who says we don't deserve a mile? Who knows, people might actually like what black people have to offer to the fashion world, wouldn't that be a shocker? ( sarcasm)

Fabric ( Jersey & Silk) + Graphic Prints= The Pucci Look + Aristocratic Elegance

Emilio Pucci, who hasn't heard of this man? You know him from his geometric prints and world renowned scarves, but this Italian born designer wasn't always into fashion.

Born on November 20, 1914 in Naples, Italy, Marchese Emilio Pucci de Barsento was the son of a wealthy and noble family. Given his luxurious surroundings, he became interested in hobbies that only the rich enjoyed; skiing, swimming, fencing, playing tennis, and racing cars. His love for sports led him right into fashion. He took part in the 1932 Winter Olympics as a part of the Italian Skiing Team, but he didn't compete.

Unlike a lot of other designers, he went to quite a lot of schools. In 1933 he went to the University of Milan and then the University of Georgia. In 1935 he earned a skiing scholarship to attend the Reed College in the United States and got a Masters in Social Science. In 1937 he earned his doctorate in Political Science from the University of Florence.

As if that was not enough, he joined the Italian Air Force and served as a pilot during WWII. He returned home to Italy because of health concerns that kept him from flying.
He did play a big part in the War I mean, he was the confidant of Mussolini's oldest daughter. He drove her to the Swiss border to ensure her escape as well. Crazy right ?

Well, enough of the history lesson, let's talk fashion. Though he designed the clothing for the Reed College ski team, he didn't get noticed until he was skiing on the slopes of St. Moritz. A Harper's Bazaar reported noticed him and his outfit and found out that he made his own clothing. He was invited to make a few pieced for a photo shoot with the magazine in 1948 and that is when the world got their first look at what Emilio Pucci could do.

Pucci, using stretch fabric in ways that Europe had never seen before, opened his first shop in Capri in 1949. In 1950 he created his first couture line of clothing and showed it in France. He was using his knowledge of stretch fabric and bold prints to set him apart from other designers and people loved it. Having his own fashion house was a big step fro Emilio because he would be the first in his family to hold a job in over a thousand years.

He leveraged his resources in order to get his line started. He used his family's palace as his ateliers and used the grand ballrooms to show his collections.

As quick as his career began, he got recognition even quicker. By the early 1950's he was winning awards from Neiman Marcus and his clothing was worn by Jackie O. The popularity of his dresses could be accredited to the lightweight fabric and their ability to remain wrinkle-free.

Fun Fact: Marylin Monroe was buried in one of his dresses.

It was also during the 50's that Pucci began to develop his signature : Graphic Prints. Known as "the prince of prints" his clothing didn't need to bear his name as a logo, his prints could be recognized as the work of only one man: Emilio Pucci.

In 1959 he began to make lingerie, in 1965 he began making stewardess uniforms that came complete with helmets that would protect their hair from rain and wind. He also designed the Apollo 15 mission patch even though the crew replaced the original colors of blues and greens with red, whites, and blues. He even designed Cappellini furniture and a 300 foot hand painted sail for the Wally Yachts.

In 1966 he released a perfume called "Vivara."

Pucci must have been a man who had a list of things he wants to do before he dies because this man has seriously done everything. I am starting to feel like designing was just a side hobby. Did you know he was he was on the Italian Parliament in 1963 and in 1968.

Sadly in 1992, Emilio died at the age of 78. His daughter Laudomia took over as the head designer of his house. Followed by others such as Julio Espada, Christian Lacroix, and Matthew Williamson. Now Peter Dundas will take over as creative director. In 2000, LVMH acquired 67% of Pucci.

Overall, Pucci was driven by the desire to liberate women and granting them the freedom and movement. This has to do with his fabric choices that are undoubtedly his signature. Hailing from a luxurious family bloodline, he was able to capture the essences of beauty and elegance in his designs and every woman wanted that, nick named the "Pucci Look."

“When you put on something with color, suddenly you feel happy and rested. You go out with a man, and he gets joy from how you look. I'm not giving you a dress. I'm giving an element of joy to you, which is much more important than a stupid dress.”

I am so feeling this guy let me tell you why ( yes, I am a poet lol). I really love how he pursued other careers than fashion design. It really showed how well rounded he was. I mean I am impressed that he even decided to get such an extensive education and career given that he was royalty. I mean I know I would have been temped to just chill at the palace :-), but not him. He wanted to design, study, change laws, do everything he ever wanted and then some. His clothing, in a way, is reminiscent of that. They are free and unpredictable but yet still have a purpose.

I love his clothing and I love that even without a logo, it is recognizable. I mean who wouldn't know a Pucci scarf from a mile away.

I know it is hard to learn from him because he was very brief with his fashion career but I think we can take the phrase " Carpe Diem" from him. He definitely seized the day with all the things he accomplished in his life. His fashion career basically fell in his lap and he took it and ran with it. So when even an opportunity presents itself, take it and milk it for all its worth by using all your resources and abilities to take advantage of it in the best way possible. That's what Emilio did and look at his legacy!
