Provide additional practice. Commercial materials often provide little or no practice opportunities.

Provide as much structure as possible. LD students typically have poor organizational skills Make sure that your directions are clear and that these students will have a way of knowing when they have completed a task successfully.

Substitute simpler words for difficult words. This will improve LD students’ comprehension.

Provide opportunities for transfer and generalization. LD students often don’t realize that what they learn in one situation can be used in other situations.

It is important that students understand that past events have shaped the world in which they live today.

However, too much consistency can become boring for your students. Students who are bored often become students who act out. Mix it up in your classroom by varying how you deliver instruction. Use a mix of lectures, demonstrations, role playing activities, and independent activities to maintain students’ interest. Slowly introduce new routines, and surprise your students from time to time by doing something they haven’t come to expect.

Identify 20 words you want your students to recognize by sight. Prepare Bingo cards with four squares across and five squares down. Call out each word and its spelling and instruct your students to randomly write each word in one of the squares on their card. Then call out the words in random order. Have your students use a colored pencil to locate and cross out a word when it’s called. The first student to correctly call out Bingo (the five words in a square correctly crossed out) receives a small prize.

Teaching is a tough job. Whenever you wonder if it’s all worth it, think about teachers you had as a student. You will no doubt recall teachers who affected your life in a positive way.

I did the following exercise with my graduate university students, most of who were married with one or more children and their own home. I asked if they remembered the name of the real estate agent they had worked with. Few did. I then asked if they remembered the name of their kindergarten teacher. Almost all did. Never underestimate the lifelong effect you will have on many of your students. By the way – I’ve bought and sold a number of houses, but cannot recall the name of any of the real estate agents I dealt with. I do remember Miss Brennan. She was my kindergarten teacher a long time ago. I can picture her in my mind right now.
