Don’t get trapped into selecting something that’s not right for you. Take control of the process! To help you with the process of researching, choosing, and applying for a study abroad program, AmeriSpan is happy to share “4 Steps To Choosing The Right Study Abroad Program”. Following these simple tips can help ensure that you have the best possible international study abroad experience, whether you want to study Chinese in China or learn Portuguese in Brazil.

Step 1: When & What Works For You?

Write down your goals and constraints. In order to find a study abroad program that meets your academic, financial, and personal needs, you need to clearly define your goals and constraints. What is it that you want to accomplish? When can you go? What can you afford? While your dream may be to study Spanish in Barcelona, does it make more financial sense for you to learn Spanish in inexpensive Guatemala at this moment, and try out that new knowledge while taking a semester abroad in Spain next year?

Step 2: Where To Go?

Select a location BEFORE you select a program. AmeriSpan strongly believes that atmosphere is a key ingredient in the overall learning recipe (http://www.amerispan.com/). You will learn more in an environment where you feel comfortable. Are you a big city person or do you prefer small towns? What do you like to do outside of class? Do you prefer a busy nightlife or fewer distractions from your studies? Are you interested in Latin American indigenous cultures, or are European cultures more enticing? For example, if you love the beach and water sports you might want to try a program to learn French and surfing in Biarritz, France, but if you love museums and shopping, you might rather study French in Paris.

Step 3: Which Programs Meet Your Needs?

Research and compare program details. Not every international study abroad program is right for every student. When evaluating different programs, we recommend that you answer the following:

What are the deadlines, start dates, and payment policies? What are the requirements? (language, grade point average).

Are the elective courses taught in English or the local language?

How large are the language classes?

Where is the campus located? (near a city center, public transportation., etc.).

What facilities are offered? (on-site cafeteria, computer lab, library).

What are the housing options?

What out-of-class activities are offered?

What excursions are included?

Are volunteer or internship opportunities available?

What other services are included? (travel protection program, mobile telephone).

What type of transcript is provided? (US college or foreign university).

One of the best tools for researching and comparing study abroad programs is the Internet. There are also study abroad blogs popping up where you can pick up helpful tips, such as http://www.abroadbloggers.com/

Step 4: Who Puts It All Together?

Find the right study abroad provider. Independent organizations and private/state universities both provide study abroad programs at foreign institutions worldwide. In your research, you may find that the program you want is offered by several organizations. Therefore, you should select the one with the best service and value, and that you feel the most comfortable with. Remember that you will be studying far from home, or even overseas. You will have a better time learning Spanish or studying Italian in a foreign land if you are confident with your agent. Here are some issues to keep in mind when evaluating different study abroad providers:

Are they reputable? Ask for references, how many students they send, and years in business.

Are your inquiries or concerns answered in a complete, friendly, and timely manner?

Do they demonstrate a good understanding of the location and the finer details of the program? What exactly do you get?

Do they provide extra services? (excursions, mobile telephone, in-country transportation, extra activities, other lodging options, etc.)

Are the payment and cancellation policies flexible? (credit cards, late registration, postponements, etc.)

These are your 4 basic steps. Sure, there is more to think about before you study abroad, but if you follow the above advice you are on your way to selecting an excellent study abroad program.

About The Author

Dorioara Pinku

For more free articles about study abroad, language programs for all ages, foreign cultures and travel, click: http://www.amerispan.com/subscribe. While there may be grains of truth in some of these stories, below are some common misconceptions about study abroad.

Misconception #1: Studying abroad is very expensive.

Truth: In most cases, it is actually cheaper to study abroad. Let’s say the tuition at your school is $5,000 per semester and room and board is another $4,000. Now add in the additional fees you have such as health insurance, books, and laundry. You are now well over $10,000 for the semester. Well, all but one of our programs in Spain is under $10,000 per semester and that includes everything except your airfare and spending money.

Misconception #2: I can’t use my financial aid to study abroad.

Truth: In almost all cases, your federal aid (Stafford loans, Pell grants, etc.) can be used to study abroad and in some states, you can use your state aid as well. It is also not uncommon for your federal aid to increase when you study abroad since some of your school scholarships may not transfer.

Misconception #3: Host families are all poor and just do it for the money.

Truth: The last thing any study abroad company wants to do is have an unhappy student on their program. The goal is for the students to be happy so that they will tell their friends what a great time they had. If we were putting students in bad families, in dangerous neighborhoods, then no one would ever recommend us to their friends. Since the number of universities that endorse our program doubled over the last year, it’s a pretty sure bet that students are happy with our choice of families.

Misconception #4: I’ll be so busy with schoolwork that I won’t get time to see the country I’m in.

Truth: This one is hysterically funny since your average study abroad student comes home with about 400+ photos from a long list of countries. Students have plenty of opportunities to travel and we even take our students on trips to give them a better feel for the country they are in.

Misconception #5: I might not graduate on time if I go abroad.

Truth: If you have already used up all of your elective or general education courses, then it’s true that you might need to bulk up on courses before or after you go abroad. If you plan ahead, however, and leave some electives open to you, then you should be fine. The clear majority of students who study abroad still graduate in four years, despite being away from their home campus for a semester or two.

Misconception #6: Most of the world hates Americans, so I won’t be safe.

Truth: There’s no doubt that there are a lot of people who don’t like the American government, but that has nothing to do with the American people. If you compare the violent crime rate in the United States to that of European, Australian, or Asian countries, you will see that the United States is actually far more dangerous. There are some areas of South America and Africa that are not especially safe, but there are also many countries on those continents that are incredibly safe. Go to the U.S. State Department website and check out the crime statistics on the country you are interested in to see how safe it is.

Studying abroad is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that every college student should take advantage of. Before dismissing it due to the bad experience of one friend or rumors you have had heard, speak with your study abroad advisor and get the facts. I guarantee that once you look at all that studying abroad can offer you, you’ll be hopping the first flight abroad.

One organization that help ensure that you have safest, unforgettable yet affordable study abroad experience is Academic Studies Abroad. Today, it is spoken by approximately 70 million people, and is the official language of several nations, including Italy, Slovenia, and Vatican City. If you are interested in learning to speak, read, and write another language, consider the romantic Italian language. You could study at a college or University and receive your degree in Italian. You could take one of many online accelerated courses. Or you could experience the beauty, history, and culture of the Italian language firsthand. You could attend one of the many Italian immersion programs available in Italy.

Earning a degree in Italian from a college or University will provide you with a thorough knowledge of written and conversational Italian. If you earn a college degree in the Italian language, you will most likely be fluent in it. This can lead you to several interesting career options. For example, you can find employment as a foreign language translator, either in the United States or aboard. You can also work as a teacher of English as a second language to students in Italy. If you are already established professionally, and find that you must learn Italian as a job requirement, you can enroll in accelerated courses in Italian online. There are several reputable programs offered via the Internet that are convenient and fun. Learning Italian in this manner will give you a very basic foundation in the language.

If you have the time to devote (a few weeks to a month) and the financial resources, an ideal opportunity is to learn the Italian by enrolling in an immersion program. By doing this, you will not only learn Italian, but you will get a taste of the exciting Italian way of life. Learning Italian in the beautiful country of Italy, where the language has its ancient roots, you will be thrust into the life and culture, and you will learn to speak and understand the language quickly and with surprising ease. You will learn the conversational and colloquial styles of the Italian language. You will interact on a daily basis with native Italian, and they probably won’t be willing or able to communicate with you in English. You will be absorbed into the everyday life of Italy. You can choose to study in historic Rome, Florence, Milan, or even Venice. You will learn to understand and appreciate the mythic Italian culture: the art, the architecture, the food, and the people. You will also attend courses in which you will learn how to read and write Italian. Can you think of a more fun and interesting way to learn a foreign language?

Knowing how to communicate in more than one language (such as English and Italian) can be advantageous to your career. If the business you are in demands international travel, being able to communicate with your associates in Italy will make your work easier and less stressful. If you are fluent in Italian, you can be certified as a foreign language translator for example (as mentioned previously). This is a challenging career opportunity. You can work full-time for a foreign language translation firm, translating important business documents or web pages for global corporations. Or you can do freelance translation work, where you make your own work schedule. You might also have the skills to teach English to students in Italian speaking countries. By knowing English and Italian, you would be able to live and work in Italy.

By learning to speak, read, and write the Italian language, you possess the potential to develop you career by working in Italy, or you can set out on a new career as a translator or English instructor. Learning Italian will also enhance your travels to Italy. Learning the Italian language is an intellectually and personally achievement that will broaden your scope professionally open your eyes to a new culture.

Find the essential information on where and how to learn a new or second language at http://www.foreign-languages-school.com/study-the-italian-language.html

About The Author

John Davison is a director of numerous Internet companies and is a published author. Don’t bring anything that might have to be dry cleaned! You will find doing your laundry in a Laundromat quite expensive compared to the States, the prices for dry cleaning are astronomical, as it’s still not a very common practice. Should you discover a red wine stain on your favorite ‘dry clean only’ shirt that made its way into your suitcase against better advise, look for a Pressing or Blachisserie and ask for a “nettoyage à sec” (TIP: Before forking over for a dry cleaning bill, the best way to get a red wine stain out of clothes is by pouring it’s friend white wine all over it, honest!)

2. Because the water in France is a lot “softer” than in the States, your hair and skin may not feel as clean even after washing. For this reason, it’s best not to bring your own products from home, but to buy products here that are specially adapted and produced according to the minerals in the water. You can go to any of the beauty supply stores and talk to a sales lady about it and they can direct you to a product that’s right for you.

3. For a truly interesting movie going experience in Paris, be sure to visit La Pagode. The manager of the store Bon Marché imported a real pagoda from Japan for his wife to use as a ballroom! Unfortunately they soon divorced, and it was turned into a movie theater that makes for a brilliant experience…be sure to ask for the salle japonaise. (57 rue de Babylone 75007)

4. When headed to the cinema, the matinees are always cheapest. But pay attention to the rules of each movie house, because in some this may be any film played before noon, but in others it may just be the first film of the day. Many theaters also have reduced ticket prices on Mondays and Wednesdays. (TIP: Be sure the film is in VO, version originale, played in English with subtitles and not dubbed over in French, VF!)

5. If you are studying abroad in Nice, be sure to visit one of the few internet cafés in the city, located at 8 Rue Vincent, just at the corner of Rue Pontin in the Old Town. They have wi-fi and cable TV, great food and snack, and Happy Hour for drinks starting at 5 pm. Plus it’s run by a lovely Englishman who has been living in Nice for over 15 years, and is a great resource on where to go and what to do in the city.

Kevin Browne studied in Strassbourg, France while attending Holy Cross College. These exams have their own flaws and may be perceived as regressive patterns of testing the knowledge, aptitude and analytical abilities of a graduate student. I am in no which way an expert, scholar or authority who can strongly detest the usage of the aforementioned exams in selection criteria of students for a study abroad program. The bottom line is that these exams are bridges across global schools which facilitate the selection of deserving students.

In my honest opinion exams like GRE are a matter of hard work and luck; both the determinants sharing the credit of your success equally. However, at times you may have a bad day or may be you are ill while you appeared for the exams. The results obviously are skewed towards the lower percentiles. Now- a- days some institutions have been realistic enough to understand that the undergraduate GPA, work experience and a good resume, compounded with a professional letter of intent (for the desired study program) actually decide the capability of a student rather than the scores of standardized exams like GRE. The list of programs which may help you earn a MBA degree without GRE/ GMAT is given below. These institutions are in no which way associated with my professional or academic interests. As a matter of fact there are a growing number of students who have exceptional work experience and great academic record but unfortunately were not able to perform on the standardized exams. Admittedly we are witnessing a boom in the number of students participating in study abroad programs and responding to this boom a great number of schools all over the world have relaxed the admission criterion. USA harbors these institutions which would give preference to your overall body of work rather than the scores on standardized exams.

No GRE / GMAT required -MANAGEMENT PROGRAMS

1. Even if the standard of education in your country or state is of the highest, it still makes sense to study abroad as it affords you the opportunity to learn a new language and to understand what is happening around the world. Participating in a study abroad program increases your job marketability, especially if the interviewer has also studied abroad.

There are clear advantages to enrolling in a study abroad, such as:

1. Understanding and learning of a new culture: Learning the intricacies of the culture of a different country will help you to be more culturally sensitive to others. You can develop solid business relationships through your understanding of the culture of others.

2. Understanding foreign politics: Your value will increase if you understand the general politics of the country where your company plans to do business. Moreover, if something needs to be done that requires knowledge and an understanding of the politics of the foreign country in question, you’ll be able to do so very easily.

3. Learning a foreign language will be much easier to do through immersion: When you time with people of a different country, it is much easier to learn the foreign language in a short span of time, as compared to studying the language in a classroom.

4. Learning to be patient and flexible: By studying abroad you will learn to be patient and flexible in your approach to various aspects of life, especially because of having to face unfamiliar circumstances in a country not your own and having to adjust to them. Aside from gaining a better understanding of the world, you will prove to be an asset to any prospective employer.

When you go abroad for an international study abroad program, you will gain all the above advantages and become a better, all around person. Moreover, you will become competitive, responsible and independent. The international exposure will enable you to adapt very easily to different cultures and survive the rigorous pressures of the modern-day competitive world. Moreover, choosing to study abroad will give you a rewarding experience and will transform your life.

These added advantages are the good answers for why study abroad: all-around development, gaining an adaptive and progressive attitude, broadening your intellectual capacity and developing a deep and thorough knowledge of economic, political and international issues outside of your native country, learning more about yourself and gaining cross-cultural skills.

Aside from these points for why study abroad, you will be able to meet many interesting and influential people and forge friendships that may prove beneficial in the long run. You will see lots of new places and in general, you will be able to enhance your career. This opportunity could very well prepare you to become a leader in your own country.

Most important of all, you will be able to handle complex situations and have the courage and ability to try out new things and be able to make your own decisions.

About The Author

Lisa Curtis

Having studied abroad in many different programs and countries, Lisa Curtis is now the chief editor for Why Study Abroad.
