155 players took part in Saturday’s September Medal, which was also Saturday Medal Finals Day.

Conditions were quite tough, with the course playing long and the rough especially punishing after the recent wet weather. A strong wind added to the level of difficulty and several players struggled to master the conditions, with the CSS moving up to 72 and only 11 players returning net scores under par.

6 players managed to achieve impressive net scores under 70 including Stuart Drysdale who came second in Class 1 on 69 and, winning Class 3 with the same score, Ivan Clingan. Ivan qualifies for next year’s Medal Finals, along with Craig Wilkie who won Class 1 with a 68, an excellent score which was matched by all three Class 2 winners, Ian Bone, Andrew McIntosh, and Trevor Boyd who will all be in next year’s Finals.

Qualifiers from previous Saturday Medals were also competing against each other in the Medal Finals and congratulations go to all three winners.

In Class 1, Alastair Hudson and David Eccles both scored net 72, with Alastair’s better inward half of 35 earning him the Medal.

Pat Mooney won Class 2 with a net 72, three shots ahead of his nearest rival, and Martyn Roe won Class 3 with a net 75.

Results

Class 1

68 – Craig Wilkie (6)

69 – Stuart Drysdale (4)

70 – Brendan Watt (3)

Class 2

68 – Ian Bone (13), Andrew McIntosh (11), Trevor Boyd (10)

Class 3

69 – Ivan Clingan (17)

70 – Eddie Cramb (16)

72 – Hendry Campbell (16)

With 2 events to go in the Order of Merit Chris Drysdale, on an aggregate score of 779, holds a 7 shot lead over Brendan Watt. Chris also leads in the Vice President’s Prize (best 5 score net aggregate) on 341, just ahead of Liam Haldane and Alan Cumming on 344. Alan (on 355) is also hard on the heels of Chris Lawton in the President’s Prize (best 5 score gross aggregate) who currently leads with 348.

160 players took part in the Autumn meeting on Saturday. The unusually poor August weather had forced the re-introduction of preferred lies with conditions still difficult, particularly in the middle of the day, and the CSS increased to 72.

With the lowest nett score of 68 congratulations go to Sandy Gowans for winning the Handicap Medal, finishing just ahead of Robert Sneddon and Martyn Roe on 69. The lowest gross score of 71 was returned by Kevan McArthur, a very impressive score in the conditions - earning Kevan the Autumn Meeting Scratch Prize.

Players’ scores from Saturday’s competition are combined with those from the Spring Meeting (held in June) to find the best gross and nett aggregate scores over the two events. Congratulations to James Todd Jnr who wins the K G Patrick Medal with a best gross aggregate score of 150, beating Alan Dryden into second place by virtue of a better Autum Meeting score. Congratulations also to Pat Mooney who wins the Infirmary Cup with a best nett aggregate score of 135, 8 shots clear of the field.

17 members from Cardross Golf Club enjoy a great day at Kings Park....

Thanks to William Hughes for organising the group of 17 golfers from Cardross who visited Stirling on Monday 17th August. This comment from Willie sums up what the group thought of our Club:

‘I personally have played at some fine venues this season, eg. Kingsbarns, Gleneagles, Ladybank, Nairn Dunbar, Downfield, & Newmachar to name but a few. Your Club’s facilities are among the best that I have enjoyed’.

His report of the day

The 5th annual MWF (Monday; Wednesday; Friday) outing was played over 18 holes at Stirling Golf Club on Monday August 17th.

17 members took part in what was a most enjoyable day. The weather forecast had been poor, suggesting continual rain; however one small heavy shower, lasting for about 10 minutes, did little to dampen the spirits.

The course was in excellent condition and special thanks are extended to the Stirling Golf Club Green keeper, John Crawford; Professional, Ian Collins, and to the Secretary, Alan Rankin for honouring our members by permitting play from the medal tees. This certainly provided a stern test of golf for our members.

The day was won by Matthew Mackie who scored a creditable 36 Stableford points. Matthew scored on every hole shooting 4 birdies at the 2nd, 8th, 12th & 17th and 3 bogies at the 1st, 13th,15th & 16th. This was Matthews first outing with the MWF and he became the 5th different winner of the trophy.

Runner up was Stewart McIver who scored 34 Stableford points. Stewart scored on all bar the 16th, also racking up 4 birdies, the best of which was a fine 2 that earned him Nearest the Pin at the 6th.

Other prize winners were John Munro with the Longest Drive at the 13th, and Tom Glendinning with Nearest the Pin at the 14th.

The MWF group would also extend their thanks and appreciation to the restaurant and bar staff of Stirling Golf Club for providing excellent refreshments in a warm and friendly atmosphere. Bacon & sausage rolls with tea & coffee, prior to our round, and a most enjoyable steak pie dinner afterwards with drinks at the bar rounded off a perfect day.

All in all, an excellent venue in which to play our chosen sport.

185 players took part in the rescheduled August Medal on Saturday.

Conditions were fair and the CSS was 71, but the recent poor weather has made playing conditions generally more difficult. Only 19 players returned net scores under par, and there was a higher than average number of no returns.

Christopher Drysdale won the event with a net 66, which included 13 pars, 3 birdies and just 2 bogeys – putting him just ahead of Murray Ferguson on net 67. Congratulations to Chris on qualifying for the Saturday Medal Finals due to be held on 5th September. Hugh Lawson also qualified by winning Class 2 with a net 69, and Rory Mackenzie qualifies in Class 3 with the same net score.
