Like a speeding bullet I go through time
Trying to run away from the past…

Swedish house/techno duo Bangana on the contrary, is catching up with their past.

Some people think of Bangana as a certain type of Asian cyprinid fish. But to all the Swedes who’s been dancing to house in late 90s and early 2000s, the name Bangana definetely has a much more pleasant meaning. For us Bangana (and Sumo) are the house- and techno-makers Alf Tumble and Combo.

As Sumo they were the first Swedes to tour Scandinavia playing summerish afro and latin influenced live instrument house performing their The Danceband album as a five men “house band”. I remember myself having Nini and Supra Sumo tracks in my “secret weapons” DJ box back in the days. As Bangana they explored a bit darker, more techy artefacts of their long studio hours.

The album opens heartfully with Dead End – originally released in 2008 and featuring Clarisse Muvemba who previously worked with Sumo on tracks like Nini and Lovebeat). Roses is also a Bangana & Clarisse Muvemba project originally released in 2008.

Vibe is the most energetic track on the album that will make many silhouetes do the 2009 shake once again at 128 bpm in many clubs this summer. Asterix (originally released in 2008) takes us on a somewhat pleasently trippy, ever evoling progressive techno trip. Skrik is another choped-up-beat techno re-release from 2006 with that synthesizer many of us may still remember. Aurora – percussion driven love story that keeps building up for an eternity (originally released on vinyl in 2010).

Deeper, Love and Leia are another two classic Bangana tracks from the past.

All in all Tales from The Crypt is more of a reunion after a long break, brushing of some dust from the duos past production. The red threat is wholeheartedly underground, experimental, techy, stripped down approach. Less is more. Nothing is new but nothing is lost.

What I’m really looking forward to are the new 2013 remixes for the Dead End where Gill & Szenasi deliver a beat smother, darker take on the original including a lovely freestyle sax, while Duran Genc and Aytekin Kurt add a bit of cocktail lounge groove, a dash of old-school percusion and a pinch of a flanger.

The summer and the HMWL Podcast 89 are finally here.

Victor Berghmeister entered the scene releasing Bloutrein EP on UK Label Moxi Records back in early 2012 after a year of experimenting with different genres and sounds.

Somewhere in the timeline between now and then however, he realized the power of the 7 chord as well as the new disco wave that had emerged and fell in love with deep house and garage. Both the acid bassline driven Detroit branch as well as the more sample based, soulful, rnb influenced branch that has risen again with great help from producers such as Axel Boman, Manuel Tur and Hannes Fischer. Right now, merging these two branches, while trying to maintain a flavor of “freshness” is the goal of this young producer.

1. HNNY – For the very first time (Original Mix)
2. Suburb – Aspiration
3. TROY DOUGLAS – Liquids (Victor’s side project @djtroydouglas )
4. Lauhaus Kabale Und Liebe – Hiphouse (Original Mix)
5. Delgado & Krissy K – Yah Right (Original Mix)
6. Kerri Chandler – Bar A Thym
7. Lars Vegas – The Game
8. Detroit Swindle – Guess What (Original Mix)
9. Fulbert – First Time House
10. Urulu & Steve Huerta – Things I Didn’t Mean

HMWL: The Rosamango EP release on Nonlocal came pretty much out of nowhere. All the four tracks were fantastically well produced making us go “Ahhhhh! – who is this guy?”. What have you been doing production wise until now? Other monickers?

Victor: I’ve basically been working on being a better producer the last 3 years or so. I started out just making a bunch of original tracks and edits under silly names (mostly under Vladivostok and Fad Manner) which I basically all made “free to download” since I I was in it just for the love of making music. Since then I’ve had a few releases but the one i’m most proud of is aformentioned “Rosamango EP” which just got a release on newcomer canadian label NonLocal.

HMWL: Nearest future project, production-wise, gig-wise, club-wise?

Victor: Well, I’m now the third member of a project/former DJ-Duo called Troy Douglas. We’re keeping busy playing a lot, mostly in Stockholm since that’s our base, but we’re working hard on getting an EP out soon as well. Let’s just say my solo stuff has been taking a backseat for the last couple of months since with Troy Douglas, we’ve found a nice vibe and a sound that we want to pursue further.

HMWL: Labels and artists to look out for in 2013 according to you?

Victor: It’s definitely a free-for-all in the underground house scene right now with everyone using multiple AKA’s and releasing on so many different cool labels but some stand-outs for me are HNNY, Detroit Swindle and MK. They’ve all consistantly made some great things in 2011-2012 and in different sub-genres so I’m sure they have even more to give in 2013. As for labels; Stockholm-based Local Talk. They’re hyped I know but all they do seem to just work. Also Studio Barnhus with Axel Boman and Kornel Kovacs at the wheel have been releasing all kinds of sweet stuff and I’m hoping for more in 2013.

Mashups are usually the most awful way of destroying good music. But here is something completely different and tasteful, delivered by one of Sweden’s most respected electronica veterans David West (aka Antiloop, aka West Recordings). Mashups are usually the most awful way of destroying good music. But here is something completely different and tasteful, delivered by one of Sweden’s most respected electronica veterans David West (aka Antiloop, aka West Recordings). It’s a classy mash-up sampling Wagon Chris – Shadows, Akabu / Lodmann – Another World and perhaps some kind of a James Bond theme soundtrack.
I got completely hooked on Electronical Reads releases since the first two promos by Optional Feast hit our inbox back in late 2010. Since then, the label has grown into a solid product with a strong catalogue with almost 30 releases, label roof parties in the heart of Brussels and a own radio show.

Just in time for day time parties at Sonar arrives a new promo from the head honcho Felix Cage. Big love for the playful summer vibes of Cat on the Ledge as well as for Magda & Magdalena.

Some favorite Electronical Reeds releases from back in the early days include Christian Viviano – Spiritual Life EP, Optional Feast – Porro EP and Houltog – Music EP.

Belgian DJ/producer Felix Cage is a man on the rise. Having cropped up on a number of seminal imprints over the years, this time around he returns to his home label, Electronical Reeds; for a stunning record that speaks volumes of his eclecticism and his vast expertise in the production studio.

Opening salvo and title-track ”A Cat on a Ledge” serves up an instant case in point. Grooving but chilled, it saunters with a firm summer-time vibe that’s matched with a sultry male lyric, classic sounding house beat and effervescent piano chords. A perfect accompaniment to the days at the beach and nights at the club, this is contemporary, effervescent house music with tinges of labels such as Poker Flat.

The second of the two originals is ”Magda & Magdalena”, another colourful effort that showcases another side of Cage’s musical agenda. Rugged yet playful-and charged with lackadaisical melodies and hidden intricacies aplenty-this one lends the package a chilled, smile-inducing vibe that carries it further in the direction of the dancefloor. Finally, Superdrums completes the equation with a more robust version of the latter, closing matters amongst a barrage of turbo-charged, hands-in-the-air house music.

Revibe is a social web-based music service for electronic music. We aim to highlight the underexposed scene of electronic dance music to the world. Currently only available in Sweden.

Having previously unearthed and showcased plenty of new school talent like Chamboche, Bonar Bradbury and A/Jus/Ted, Under The Shade turn to two hot house properties in the form of Ben Pearce and Real Connoisseur for their next release – a split EP of one original and one remix from each artist.

You probably already know the name Ben Pearce from ‘What I Might Do’, his oddly anthemic deep-house debut that dominated club floors across the world in 2012. Here he is in similar form with ‘Just Enough’ – a dark and studiously moody house cut that brews and stews for the duration with almost hymnal pads, smooth and buried deep kick drums and just the slightest traces of classicism in the repeated male vocal clip. Light-fingered drum fills and carefully, scale riding melodies add depth and space and this one is likely to be as big as his debut.

Remixing the track is Real Connoisseur, a 20 year old from Oxford with releases on labels like Purp & Soul already under his belt. His version stands more upright with sharp and slinky percussion bringing a deep garage vibe the track. What will most standout for clubbers, though, is the mangled and spangled bassline that ripples through the track come the mid point Floor slaying stuff for sure.

And so to his original track, ‘Nobody’s Fool’, it’s an elastic and bombastic deep house cum bass music hybrid with precise bass notes patting out the rhythm and kinetic drum hits churning in its midst. A euphoric, hands in the air vocal sample bursts through a various points as the bassline bobbles along below and the production is both rich and warm, infused with a neon glow and crafted for maximum damage, you suspect.

Pearce returns the remix favour and tweaks it into a more peak time, punchy house jam with well placed vocal snippets accentuating the kick of the drums. It’s easy to see why Pearce won so many fans early on, and this EP suggests Real Connoisseur isn’t far behind him.

The next release from Leftroom Ltd is the ‘Two Times’ EP from No Fit State man, Geddes, featuring a remix from US house legends, Murk.

Geddes is a DJ/Producer who has had considerable influence on London’s fertile electronic music scene in the past ten years. The nomadic Mulletover nights he runs with Rob Star are a bone-fide institution for clubbers seeking out a discerning music policy any Geddes role as a resident there has seen him hone his craft the old school way. His stewardship of the murmur imprint along with his own productions for the likes of Tsuba and Mobilee have showcased a strong ear and deft touch.

The ‘Two Time’ EP is Geddes debut for close friend Matt Tolfrey’s Leftroom Ltd label and the title track is a timeless yet modern slice of sleek and moody late-night house propelled by an undercurrent of hefty kicks and machine-like percussion.

‘Showdown’ on the flip retains the same balance between raw and fluidity that ‘Two Time’ has but is a more aggressive affair, with stabbing bass pules and broken synths lending a menacing air throughout.
Murk, a duo who need very little introduction, remix of ‘Two Time’ sees the duo break out strident 909 drums and deliver a direct and classic sounding interpretation with very little distraction from simple melodies, dry effects and earthy grooves.

Geddes’ ‘Two Time’ is released on Leftroom Ltd 10th June on vinyl and digitally two weeks later.

Golden Age Thinking Part 4 is the final 12” release from duo Giles Smith and the late-Martin Dawson.

‘Golden Age Thinking’ was previously a three part, split LP but the three tracks featured on ‘Golden Age Thinking’ were to be an additional footnote to the project before the complete LP was released as a whole package digitally in June this year. Written just before Martin passed away in late-2012 the tracks featured on this, the 12” release, are the sort of timeless house music the duo shared a deep love of and the decision to release them was taken by Giles and Martin’s father.

Two Armadillo’s ‘Golden Age Thinking Pt 4’ is released June 10th on 12” vinyl while the full, four part ‘Golden Age Thinking’ LP is released digitally early-June.
