Managed to complete "The Carbon Almanac" on the boat. Edited by Seth Godin, it is a compendium of facts, tables, photos and more. The effort a result of over 500 folks input and collaboration. To avoid the thoroughly depressing info it contained, I picked up "The Book of Hope, A survival guide for trying times". A series of conversations between Douglas Abrams and Jane Goodall (yes, she of the chimps).

A most worthy read and just what I needed. Some may be aware that I had started a series of podcast conversations to "make sense of climate" with a local activist, Ted McIntyre. Haixia was blind in one eye at birth from a cataract and lost sight in the other eye in a factory accident, and when Wenqi was only three years old he lost both his arms when he touched a downed power line. When Haixia lost his sight completely he became really depressed and Wenqi realized that he must find something they could do that would give purpose to Haixia’s life. At that point they were in their mid-thirties. “I don’t know how long it took Wenqi to think up his plan, but he suddenly got the answer. Both had often talked about how the land around their village had become increasingly degraded since they were young. Quarrying had polluted the rivers, killing fish and other aquatic life, and industrial emissions had polluted the air. “I can just imagine Wenqi telling his friend that what they should do was plant trees. And I bet Haixia was incredulous at first—how could they do that? They didn’t have any money, and he was blind and Wenqi had no arms. Wenqi had the answer—he would be Haixia’s eyes and Haixia would be his arms. “They couldn’t afford to buy seeds or saplings, so they decided to clone from branches cut from the trees. Haixia did the cutting while Wenqui directed him to the right place. And they walk from place to place with Haixia holding on to one of Wenqui’s empty sleeves. At first it all went wrong. They were excited they managed to plant about eight hundred cuttings in the first year, but imagine how they felt when spring came and only two of them were alive. The land was simply too dry. At that point Haixia wanted to give up, but Wenqi told him that was not an option—they would just have to find a way to get water to the trees. “I don’t know how they did that—but, anyway, they did. They planted more cuttings, and this time most of them survived.” Jane said together they have now planted over ten thousand trees. At first the other villagers were skeptical, she told me, but now they help to take care of those very special trees.

If Wenqui and Haixai can accomplish something in their way, anything is possible!

So I am back from play, ready and refreshed to tackle each day anew.

"here in the United States, nearly 40 million people experience hunger every single year, including more than 11 million children that go to bed hungry every night. Yet, we're wasting more food than ever before -- more than 80 billion pounds a year, to be exact. The EPA estimates that food waste has more than doubled between 1970 and 2017, and now accounts for 27 percent of everything in our landfills. And as this food sits, it gradually rots and produces harmful methane gas, a leading contributor to global climate change. We have the waste of the food itself, the waste of all the money associated with producing this now-wasted food and the waste of labor with all of the above. And then there's the social inequity between people who really need food and can't get it and people who have too much and simply throw it away.

All of this made me realize that hunger was not an issue of scarcity but rather a matter of logistics. So in 2017, I set out to end hunger using technology. After all, food delivery apps had begun to explode on the scene, and I thought surely we can reverse-engineer this technology and get food from businesses like restaurants and grocery stores and into the hands of people in need. I believe that technology and innovation have the power to solve real problems, especially hunger. "

An important question for all of us to answer. Katelyn Ohashi caught a lot of folks attention with the perfect 10 in January 2019. While it was an 'overnight' sensation, as usual, it took years to prepare for.

A key part of the preparation was with Miss Val, Katelyn's coach at UCLA who is the real thing. The quick summary of Miss Val's story as she retires this year.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">"When Steve Sherlock was nominated for URCC Member of the Month, it was said that he “likes and shares all of our posts.” OK. We ask everyone to like and share our posts. But when you or I like and share a post, we are on a completely different level. When Steve likes and shares the chamber’s posts, the word REALLY gets out. The brains behind the website, Franklin Matters, Steve is a one-man digital news powerhouse for the town of Franklin. He has been sharing information to empower the voters and residents of Franklin since 2007.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Steve attends around 60 meetings each year – taking him out of his house at least one night and, sometimes, as many as three nights each week. These meetings include Town Council, School Committee, and the Finance Committee, to ‘follow the money’. He records the meetings and creates posts and podcasts for his audiences. And did we mention that this is a volunteer job?
So, the work Steve does is even more important now than it had been in the past. Franklin Matters has more than 4,000 people in its Facebook group; more than 2,000 Twitter followers, and an email list of over 1,000 that continues to grow. And when Steve posted recent election results, more than 20,000 people viewed the results on his site. Franklin residents count on Franklin Matters and Steve for their news because they know that they can rely on his level head and just reporting.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">And the volunteering does not stop there. For several years, Steve also volunteered for the Franklin Food Pantry, where he held the positions of chairman as well as secretary.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">In his real life day job, Steve is the Senior Director of Information Protection for John Hancock. He has held this position, which involves security and privacy, for more than four years now. We would guess that he probably logs in more than 60 meetings a year at his day job. Steve and his wife, Dolores, have lived in Franklin since 1995 where they raised their two daughters. He is a fixture in Franklin and the town is oh so lucky to have him. Not many towns or cities can say they have such a dedicated resource.

Chamber recognition as "Member of the Month"

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">On LinkedIn, Steve says he has a six-word resume – Project delivered, team happy, customer elated. We can say that about Steve not only for his day job, but also for his second job – bringing the news to the people of Franklin.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">So, the next time we are watching that baseball game, binge watching our favorite shows, or reading a book, we can be grateful to people like Steve Sherlock who bring our news to us without any bias. And that is more than enough reason for Steve to be the United Regional Chamber of Commerce member of the month.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Join us in congratulating Steve. Franklin Matters has been a member of the chamber since 2008 and we are grateful that he is on board with us – liking and sharing our posts. He certainly helps us get the word out."

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">“To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">To reap that which has been planted. Yes, Pete Seeger, I am about to. I officially retired from the corporate working world effective Monday, Sep 30, 2019.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I am fortunate to have had a long and successful corporate career. I started in February 1982 with Burroughs which became Unisys, switched to Fidelity in 1995, to Citizens Bank in 2010, and then most recently with John Hancock/Manulife (from 2015-2019).
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I did spend the better part of two years during the recession (having been let go by Fidelity) on the job hunt before landing a contract position at Citizens which then converted to a full time position.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Walking out the door on Monday was a different feeling in that it was the first time that I knew I wasn't going to be walking into another corporate office.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">To help celebrate I put together a 'retirement' play list that I shared with my Hancock/Manulife co-workers.
I try not to make too much of the day, it is really just one more to be grateful for waking up in this wonderfully challenging environment.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I won't do a birthday challenge with Facebook. They don't need your data. There are way too many opportunities for them to misuse it.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">If you do chose to mark my day with a donation to a worthy cause, I have several suggestions where you can make a donation.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Honor Flight - the group organizes trips to the war memorials in Washington, DC. My brothers and I were fortunate to take Dad there before he passed on and it is a very worthy cause.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">https://www.honorflight.org/
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Reading is Fundamental - yes, learning is lifelong and reading is one of the keys to that process.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">https://secure.rif.org/page/7549/donate/
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">American Cancer Society - I lost both my parents and a number of other relatives and friends to this disease. https://www.cancer.org/
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">
Crohn's and Colitis Foundation<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"> - coincidentally. Dec 1-7 is awareness week. One of my daughters has Crohn's so this is also a cause close to home.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">http://www.crohnscolitisfoundation.org/
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Horace Mann Education Association - a Franklin based org doing wonderful work with those challenged by a disability. My cousin had Down syndrome so this is close to home too. https://www.hmea.org/
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">
Franklin Food Pantry<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"> - and last but not least, if not Franklin, every community should be serviced by a food pantry or food bank to help those challenged by food insecurity. <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">https://www.franklinfoodpantry.org/
PodCamp WesternMass #10 is a week away...

And in case you've been wondering whether PodCamp is for you, here are 5 Reasons why you should join us:

If you're an absolute beginner (or nearly so), we have sessions for you. It's an unconference for everyone, at every stage of the game.

If you have experience or tips to share, your bringing that to the community is what fuels PodCamp. Help facilitate a session or just schmooze in the hallways. It's all valuable.

Meet others who are on the path with you - running a business, starting a new one, doing community work, or just learning how to get the word out better. We're all in this together!

Hang out and make friends. Seriously! This is an event that has the super-power of attracting the nicest people. We don't know quite why....we just know it's true.

Did we mention the food? Your ticket price includes coffee in the morning, a delicious healthy lunch and happy hour snacks at our 4:30 gathering at Slainte. So, no need to pack a lunch, just grab your laptop, a smart phone, tablet or a pad of paper.

Your ticket price includes:

Coffee and tea when you arrive

5 Classroom sessions of your choosing

A fabulous, healthy lunch, including gluten-free & dairy-free options

Networking happy hour with munchies

If you already bought your ticket, we can't wait to see you! And because sharing is caring, please forward this to a friend or colleague who should be there with you!
I am re-reading Stephen King's "Dark Tower" series while my birthday rolls around. Yes, the birthday does come around once a year. It will take awhile to finish re-reading the series but that should be done before my next birthday comes around again.

If you would like to do something special, I would have you consider a donation to the Honor Flight organization. Honor Flight brings World War II veterans to Washington, DC. To see the memorials they fought for.

My brothers and I were fortunate to bring Dad there while he could get around. He treasured that trip. Your help to bring the few WW II veterans that are left while they can go, is worth it.

And since I have not forgotten the face of my mother (who left us at too young an age) I'd also suggest a contribution to the American Cancer Society. Cancer took both Mom and Dad.
Proulx, 88, of West Warwick passed away on Monday, June 5, 2017 at West View Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in West Warwick, RI. Joseph was the husband of Constance R. (Ricci) Proulx with whom he would have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on September 13. Born in Providence, RI, he was the son of the late Aimable E. and Margaret C. (Selmanie) Proulx.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Joe's life will be remembered by how wonderful of a demeanor he had as a husband, father and grandfather. He set great examples of being a hard worker, a family man and a Christian. His four daughters gave him unconditional love, only to be overshadowed by the gift of being a grandfather.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">He entered the Navy at the age of seventeen and continued his education after being discharged. He had a long career at the Davisville Seabee Base in North Kingstown, RI then worked at the Naval Research Lab in Washington D.C. for a brief time before retiring.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">He was not one to sit around. In the mix of his two government careers, Joe had been a self-taught carpenter and used his skills on a scale from small wood carvings to building homes. He entertained his down time by working with counted cross stitching and watching various birds snack at his bird feeder.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Besides his wife Connie, he is survived by four daughters: Dolores P. Sherlock (husband Stephen) of Franklin, MA, Catherine A. Reirden (husband Bruce) of Summerville, SC, Diane M. Taylor (husband Dave) of Baltimore, MD and Joanne C. Gordon (husband Barrie) of Burlington, MA; five grandchildren: Jeffrey Reirden, Allison Sherlock, Mark Gordon, Carolyn Morgan and Joseph Gordon.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">He is predeceased by his two grandsons: Kevin Reirden and Jonathan Daily and his nine siblings: Eulalia Doyle, Margaret Costigan, Delores (Sister Mary Constantine), Irving Proulx, Donald Proulx, Clarence Proulx, Richard Proulx, Robert Proulx and Alma Laliberte.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Funeral from Carpenter-Jenks Funeral Home & Crematory, 659 East Greenwich Avenue, West Warwick on Saturday, June 10 at 8:45 AM followed by a Funeral Mass at St. Gregory The Great, 360 Cowesett Road, Warwick, RI at 10:00 AM.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Burial will be in St. Ann's Cemetery, Cranston, RI.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Calling hours will be Friday from 4:00 to 7:00 PM.
