Changes to opening hours February 2012

Due to the mid term break between 14-17 February 2012, there will be some changes to service opening hours.

Tuesday 14 February 2012
Library open until 7.50pm;
Learning Centre closed between 2.15 and 3.15pm and then closing at 4.30pm

Wednesday 15 February 2012
Library, Learning Centre, Digital Skills Centre are closed all day;

Thursday 16 February 2012
Library closing at 4.30pm;
Learning Centre closed between 9.30am and 3.30pm. Closing at 4.30pm

Friday 17 February 2012
Library & Learning Centre open until 4pm,
Digital skills Centre closing at 2pm

National Libraries Day and LGBT History Month

Saturday 4th February is National Libraries Day: you can't use your college library that day so why not head for your nearest public library and see what you can find? We don't pay up front to borrow a book so we don't always appreciate all the resources that libraries offer. Well done Edinburgh for keeping libraries alive despite all the cuts!

Here at SCE Library you can discover and sample the variety of resources we offer in the display near the counter. Do add your 'best book' to the poster there - maybe there's something we should add to our shelves (and it doesn't have to be fiction)?

Neatly linking this event to LGBT History Month (display by the counter) is a splendid article from The Times by Stephen Fry on how he came to accept being gay with the help of...his local (mobile) library! You can read this in the National Libraries Day display, and we'll move it to the LGBT display after the weekend.

New displays in the library

Lots to see this week! Don't miss the Burns Night display - today is the day celebrating Scotland's favourite poet. You'll find the display at the table just round the corner from the counter.

Chinese New Year was on Monday 23 January, and you can still see the colourful books and posters near the ESOL collection down on the left wall.

Friday 27 January is Holocaust Memorial Day, the day each year set aside to contemplate the terrible events inflicted by humans on each other. We remember not only the 6 million Jews killed by the Nazi regime but also more recent genocide in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia, and Darfur. You'll find books and information leaflets opposite the library counter.

Coming up: look for Poverty and Homelessness Week (28 January - 5 February), National Libraries Day (4th February), Go Green Week (6-11 February), as well as month-long displays for LGTB History Month and National Heart Month.

To access a computer in the Quiet Room 208
. make a booking with staff at the counter
. report to counter staff before start of the booked session time
. inform staff when you session ends and you leave the area.

Penguins available

A Penguin ambidextrous vertical mouse is now available for use on request in each of the 3 Learning Resources centres - the Library, Learning Centre and Digital Skills Centre.

If you wish to use a Penguin mouse during your computer session in a Learning Resources centre, please bring your ID card to the counter.

2010 just arrived!

Microsoft Office 2010 has just been installed on the computers in the Library (Room 221), the Learning Centre (Room 208) and the Digital Skills Centre (Room 409).

In this newer version of Office, you may notice a few differences from Office 2007. The Office Button icon in 2007 for example has been replaced by a file menu tab in the 2010 version. To save and print in Office 2010, you first need to click on the file tab.

Delicious acquired by AVOS

The Delicious social bookmarking site has been acquired by the founders of YouTube and is moving to a new home called AVOS very soon.

Existing users
To continue using Delicious bookmarks after the move, you must agree to let Yahoo! transfer your bookmarks to AVOS.
Delicious in its current form will be available only until 23 September 2011. After that, you will no longer be able to use your existing Delicious account and will not have access to your existing bookmarks or account information.

An express PC station has recently been set up in the Library. To use this computer look for PC3.

End of term book returns

It's almost end of term and many courses are coming to a finish. Before you leave College for summer please make sure you return to us all the books, journals and other resources you have borrowed from the library. For the majority of courses, library books must be returned by 17 June 2011.

Summer borrowing rules apply between 17 June and 2 September 2011. Anyone wishing to borrow library resources over this period should complete and return a "summer borrowing" application form to libray staff before 17 June 2011.

These sessions are ideal if you need help with: -
• using the keyboard,
• taming the mouse,
• accessing the internet,
• navigating the computer screen

-go along to your local public library and borrow ALL the books you are allowed

- use your college library's online resources, ditto!

- search on the SCE library catalogue (www.stevenson.ac.uk/heritage) and

follow the links to explore Credo or KnowUk...

- get yourself an Athens password from the library before the weekend and read an e-book

- AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

Next Tuesday, 25 January is of course Burns Night. Are you having a Burns supper? You'll find books with Robert Burns' poetry and a few artefacts celebrating Scotland's most famous poet in the centre of the library. There are lots more on the library shelf , bay 8, at 821.6 BUR.

On 27 January we take a look at Holocaust Memorial Day. This takes place every year on the anniversary of the liberation of the concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau. The purpose is to remember those who lost their lives or whose lives were changed for ever, not only during the Holocaust but also more recently in Cambodia, Bosnia, Rwanda and Darfur.

The theme for HMD 2011 is "Untold stories". In the display beyond the counter by the window you will find some of these stories. Please take a moment to sit down and read one or more, and learn more by visiting http://www.hmd.org.uk/

Next week there is a focus on two food-related topics: National Obesity Week and Food Allergy and Intolerance Week. Look in the Health and Wellbeing section (between Fiction and Reference) and at the back of the library respectively. You'll find displays and helpful resources, including books and factsheets, to borrow, watch or take away.

All the materials in the displays can be borrowed - or watched - if you have your college ID card. We hope you will find something interesting, entertaining or useful!
