48 Hour Infographic of my FourSquare check-ins

This was created for my Advanced Graphic Design class. We had to document 48 hours of our lives. Being the social media nerd that I am I decided to document 48 hours of my FourSquare checkins. I created each badge in Illustrator CS3. The check-ins are set along a path in chronological order.

Badges signify socializing, working, entertainment, coffee breaks, meals, shopping and school.

Postcard Design for Ken Love Photography

This is a project for my Production 2 class. The project is to design a 2 sided, 2 color postcard for a local small business. I'm already friends with Ken so choosing his business was a no brainer. He even went to the trouble of digging through his thousands of wedding photos to send me some high res images to choose from for the assignment.

The postcard was created in InDesign. The logo was recreated in Illustrator because I did not have access to a vector file, only a raster image which was not allowed. The finished size is 5" x 7" with a full bleed. The fonts used are Helvetica (of course) Regular and Bold, ParisinePlus Regular and Italic. Body copy is 10/12. The web address is 13 pt. Helvetica Bold. The product line is 8 pt. ParisinePlus Regular. Colors used are Pantone 185 C and Pantone Process Black C.

I'm making over a packaging label for some Winn-Dixie salad dressing, a label not really associated with more expensive brands. I'll post a photo of the "before" label, but for now this is the label as it is so far. The tree is not finished yet. It's lacking leaves. The tree just so happens to be an olive tree in case you're wondering but you probably could've figured that out on your own.

I haven't posted anything since May just because I actually forgot I had this blog. We're on our third project in Type 3 which was to design three posters for a music festival/event of our choice. I decided to go with the Winter Music Conference held every March in Miami. It's a huge week long event geared toward electronica music. In 2009, over 70,000 event attendees participated in the weeks festivities.
We had to design a type dominated poster, image dominant poster and a poster that was a combination of type and image. Here's what I came up with.

We had to design three different versions of a book cover for a book that will go into print eventually for the University of Akron Press. Since this is a typography class, typeface choices were paramount to the design and conveying the message that we wanted to send. The three different versions consisted of one of type and image only. One cover of type and graphic only and one cover of type only. This is what I came up with.

Both of these I came up with in about 20 minutes. One has to be type + image and one graphic + type. I really like the banana cover and so does my mom:) The banana is original artwork drawn by me in Illustrator and I downloaded the retro font from here. The photo is from Getty Images and is a comp only.

Much to my surprise, my Type 2 class took a vote on their top 3 favorite type booklets and mine came in first. That's awesome! There were some really great ones too. The three that I voted for came in second and the other two tied for third. Way to go me!

After many revisions my type booklet is finally complete. I'm pretty happy with it.

Update on my typeface brochure

So, I decided to do a complete overhaul to my original concept which was to use cardboard as the background for every page in my brochure about Template Gothic, but after doing a little more research on the typeface I decided a nice wood paneled wall would be a nice background because you can never have too much wood panelling...bleh. Add some washing machines and a little bit of cardboard and you got yourself a ten page booklet about the typeface Template Gothic.

These images are NOT high quality and I didn't bother to optimize them for web. It's 1:23 a.m. and I'm just too tired to move my little fingers to the Save for Web & Devices menu. Besides, the book isn't even complete and I've made a few changes to it so far. I consolidated the earmarks and examples pages onto one page. I cleaned up the history page. The characters page is perfect the way it is.

I should have the book completed by March 12 since it is due that day. I'll be sure to post images of the final book.

The flat size is 10x8 and the finished size is 5x8.

Design Comps

These are a few comps for covers for a typeface brochure for the font Template Gothic. I also have one sample of half a spread. I really love the look of the ripped cardboard and the way it fits into the history of the development of the font. I am also really happy with the look of the first initial spread. They won't all be as cramped as the one shown here but this is basically the road I want to go down with this concept.

Another semester comes to an end

Tomorrow I will turn in my final project of this semester and will be one semester closer to that very expensive piece of paper that says that I have fulfilled all of the sometimes useless requirements to become a legitimate Graphic Designer with a BFA.

I learned a lot this semester but at the same time I feel like I didn't learn half as much as I would have expected to learn mainly in my Flash class. I expected this class to be nothing but learning what the software can do and the amazing things you can create with it but really all I learned was how to do a motion tween and a few short Actionscript commands. On a positive note, I will say that I am much more knowledgeable about Flash than I was on the first day of class. There's definitely more room for improvement.

Digital Imaging turned out to be my favorite class and the class that I was least excited to take. Stan Kohn teaches Digital Imaging I and II and he is chock full of knowledge about the Adobe Creative Suite, especially Photoshop, and has even contributed to some of the user manuals that Adobe puts out for the software. I couldn't have asked for a better teacher. I am excited to be taking Digital Imaging II next Summer to fulfill my Digital Imaging minor requirement.

Typography I, I'm not even gonna really talk about it. I did learn a lot about type and how different type treatments can convey a certain feeling or message and I definitely look forward to the next three semesters of Typography classes that I am required to take. Hopefully though, those classes won't be as boring as Type I.
