Last year we asked the world to celebrate National Stay Up Late Day with us – and what a day (or night) it was! People across the country danced, sang, laughed, and reminded the world that everyone has the right to a real social life, whoever they are, wherever they live, and whatever support they need.

But this year… we’re going even bigger.
Because a night out shouldn’t be a luxury.
Because going to bed early when you don’t want to isn’t normal.
Because we know how powerful a night out can be.

So for 2025, we’re turning Stay Up Late Day into Stay Up Late Week!

(Before you worry, you don’t have to party for a whole week to join in. We just want to make it a bit longer, so people have more chance to get involved!)

From Monday the 5th to Sunday the 11th of May, we’re asking everyone to pick a day and stay up late for something that matters.

Whether it’s a live gig, a club night, a trip to the pub, or just staying up watching films with mates – this is about freedom, choice, and having a social life.

At Stay Up Late, we believe that everyone should have the freedom to live life on their own terms. Our ‘No Bedtimes’ campaign is all about ensuring that people with learning disabilities and autistic people have the same opportunities as everyone else to enjoy nightlife, social events, and personal choice.

We recently asked about what you thought of our work, now we want to know how you spend your evenings, and whether you (or the people you support) are able to choose your own bedtimes.

So we’ve put together a short survey – it won’t take longer than five minutes. We’d really appreciate it if you would share it with people living and working in care, as we want to get a good picture of what people’s lives look like.

Every response will help us better understand how we can support people working and living in care to have richer social lives.

Inclusive camping with the National Trust

Imagine watching a barn owl glide silently overhead as you gather around a campfire, the soft hoot of distant owls replacing the usual hum of city life. Just one of many magical moments we shared at our recent Wild Camp. An unforgettable weekend made possible through our partnership with the National Trust. Our ‘wild camp’ South Downs style.

I live just ten minutes from the South Downs and often walk my dog in these beautiful hills. Taking in the stunning landscapes and the rich wildlife. Living in Brighton and Hove, we are truly lucky to have both the sea and the countryside on our doorstep, not to mention the vibrant culture of the city itself. And with London just an hour away by train, it feels like the best of all worlds.

Yet, as accessible as this natural beauty might seem to some of us, there are many for whom the Downs remain out of reach. For people with additional support needs, lack of accessible public transport, and unfamiliarity with the countryside, simply getting out into nature can be daunting—if not impossible.

That’s where the National Trust’s ‘Changing Chalk’ project comes in. This initiative is all about reconnecting people with the heritage, nature, and communities of the South Downs. Focusing on those who often face barriers to enjoying these wonders.

Consequently we were thrilled when they invited us to create a Wild Camp weekend as part of this initiative. Giving us the perfect opportunity to combine our passion for inclusion and nature.

The Wild Camp Experience

So instead of our usual trip to Glastonbury, where we take a small group to experience the festival, we decided this year to reach more people through smaller, more accessible day festivals. Wild Camp became our way of also offering the adventure of camping in the outdoors. While staying true to our inclusive ethos.

A secluded field on a farm just outside Alfriston, East Sussex, served as the location—a place that isn’t a campsite, making us feel truly privileged to spend time there. The chalky ridges of the Downs overlooked the site, nestled in a peaceful valley with the Cuckmere River meandering in the distance.

It was breathtaking, and from the moment we arrived, we felt the magic of the place.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" class="wp-image-18450" src="https://stayuplate.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/IMG_8460-1024x768.jpg" alt="A group of people dance indoors wearing headphones, participating in a silent disco.
Silent disco in the ancient barn

The National Trust staff were wonderful, their passion for the countryside infectious. On a guided walk, we climbed a nearby hill, spotting delicate orchids and other wildflowers whilst a kestrel hovered overhead. We even tried munching on stinging nettle seeds. (Although I’ll admit that I stung my lips trying the same thing a week later—lesson learned!).

There was so much to do, but nothing felt rushed. Jethro, a local community chef, cooked hearty meals for us over an open fire. The farmer gave a talk on how he cares for the land, his animals and supports local businesses. Every conversation revealed new connections between the landscape, the community, each other and nature itself.

Connecting with Nature—and Each Other

One of the highlights was a visit from the local bat group (Batman and Batwoman? I can’t remember their names!). They introduced us to a world we rarely notice, teaching us how to listen for bats using special detectors. Did you know that a fifth of all the world’s mammals are bats? (Holy bat fact indeed!) And then later that evening, as we stood outside the barn, a barn owl soared silently over our heads in the moonlight. Another magical moment.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" class="wp-image-18448" src="https://stayuplate.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/IMG_8450-1024x768.jpg" alt="

Learning new skills

There was also a wonderful blend of fun and silliness throughout the weekend. We hosted a silent disco in the ancient flint barn, and one of our Gig Buddy volunteers led a lively barn dance in the field (Thank you Barney!). It was a perfect balance of laughter, learning, and peaceful reflection.

Sitting by the campfire at night, sharing stories, songs, and food cooked on the fire, I realised just how special this experience was. The National Trust team opened our eyes to a side of the Downs we might never have noticed, reminding us of the beauty that surrounds us every day. And as we basked in the warm weather, we also basked in each other’s company. The connection with nature bringing us closer together.

My relationship with the Downs has changed too. Now I’m spotting much more when I’m out on my walks with my dog.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="768" height="1024" class="wp-image-18451" src="https://stayuplate.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/IMG_8468-768x1024.jpg" alt="A hand holds a colorful plate with two pieces of bread topped with poached eggs, herbs, and crispy onions.
A Wild Camp to Remember

This wasn’t a “wild” camp in the way Glastonbury is wild—there were no booming drum and bass or huge crowds of people. Instead, there was the gentle hoot of owls, the rustle of leaves, and the quiet presence of the wildlife all around us. But it was wild in the sense of reconnecting with nature in a way that felt profound and deeply personal.

Weekends like this remind us how important it is to create opportunities for everyone to experience the outdoors. Once you’re there, nature is free to explore—and you never know what wonders you might see. We hope this is just the beginning of more opportunities for people to connect with the wildlife and landscapes that make our corner of the world so special.

Why not go wild? We were born to be wild!

As we reflect on our Wild Camp experience, we’re reminded of how valuable these moments are, not just for us but for everyone. Nature is for everyone, and through initiatives like Changing Chalk, we can continue to open doors for more people to enjoy the wonders of the South Downs.

Why not step outside and see what magical moments nature has in store for you?

It raises an important and often elusive question: what makes good support? And even more importantly, how do we consistently ensure good support, especially given current recruitment challenges?

In the past year or so, there’s been a push within the disability community to define what good care looks like. From Social Care Future’s “Gloriously Ordinary Lives” to Learning Disability England’s “Good Lives Manifesto,” many are working to establish boundaries and goals for what care can—and should—be. This is essential and impactful work, rooted in optimism and the hope for a better future, something we can get behind. Our own thinking at Stay Up Late has echoed this over the years, encouraging care to consider people’s passions and connection as central human needs (and rights). The challenge lies in communicating this vision clearly and translating it into actionable steps that can be embedded through training, rather than relying on vague directives to “be person-centred.”

Working in social care comes with many frustrations, but we must keep striving for better. Giving up isn’t an option, nor will it get us anywhere. Starting with a vision, with a goal, is crucial. Breaking down what people want and identifying the qualities of a good support worker might be key to highlighting the impressive, often unsung, work that carers do. It could also inform the kind of support and training needed, which in turn could revitalise the sector and create a strong environment where these values can thrive.

TLAP asked us to facilitate a workshop where adults with learning disabilities and autistic people could share their lived experiences for the report. We met with the Stay Up Late ambassadors and talked through what made a good support worker. What did people like about the people that supported them? What were some of the difficulties? Hearing the ambassadors’ stories it was clear the huge difference having a good support worker in your life can make. For someone living in care, it can be revolutionary. Even if it’s just one individual. Within this day and age, it can be hard to not feel like a drop in the ocean. Care work is a reminder of the impact our lives can have on one another, and the marvellous things we can bring about.

Unfortunately, we also heard stories of overworked and disengaged workers who followed a rigid checklist of tasks. To be clear, we’re not here to shame or judge support workers. This is a problem that goes beyond a few “bad apples”. As a former support worker, I know that even with initial enthusiasm, I slipped into a routine, cutting corners and losing spontaneity and innovation. And that was in a “good” house, with people who had worked together for years and cared.

Often this isn’t the case. Support workers receive little support (the irony), are underpaid, and allowed little room for creativity or growth. Change is not given the chance to flourish into an idea because the whole system is rigid. We’re focused on ticking boxes rather than nurturing the skills and judgment needed to offer truly flexible care. We need to create environments where workers feel like they can question things and recognise that within care, it can mean re-inventing the wheel daily.

We need to make sure we leave space for people to cultivate these values. And although a day’s training won’t solve everything, it’s seems a good place to start. We need strong foundations and a sector-wide culture where these values are ingrained. The way I see it, it’s an ethos really, a way to approach your life as much as your work.

Sure, values can feel “spongy and intangible,” but they matter because they shape all of our actions and behaviours. It can be hard to break down our behaviour into values, but TLAP has done a great job at translating these values into practical actions, offering a framework that feels like a meaningful job description for aspiring support workers. Hopefully, if we start to shift expectations, we can start to overcome some of the external, systemic barriers. And support workers who are allowed to uphold values and work with integrity can create cultures where they are not only valued but treasured.

The report names a long list of values that matter to people, however there’s a healthy amount of overlap and when broken down into themes, they show that “people’s basic expectations are quite modest” (TLAP, 2024).

Modest, but difficult to deliver on a large scale. Modest, fair, and reasonable—but not always easy to implement consistently. However, I believe we can do it. By adopting the report’s recommendations, we can start to encourage a culture that nurtures these values and allows space to grow.

It’s not just managers who are leaders here either. Support workers who live out good values are figureheads too. Their example sets the culture for everyone, it can be infectious. The job of managers is to make sure they allow the conditions for people to flourish and stay open to change when needed.

There’s no divide between work and life for those in care; it’s all just Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday… Hopefully if we start creating these environments, supporting someone with their life can move beyond strict tasks lists, where “Wednesday is laundry day”, to something much richer.

UCL and Gig Buddies: A Partnership in Participatory Research

We’re embarking on a new participatory research project in partnership with UCL, funded by Baily Thomas Research Funding, to study the long-term impact of our Gig Buddies project.

It’s going to be a really important piece of work for us as we seek to discover how Gig Buddies can have positive impacts on the health and well-being of people with learning disabilities.

Although it will take a couple of years to know the results, we can share a recently published piece of previous research that Fiona Brand conducted at UCL. This research examines the well-being impact of our Gig Buddies project.

Our Gig Buddies approach in a nutshell

Through the Gig Buddies project we pair volunteers with people with learning disabilities so they enjoy events together, creating social connections thereby reducing isolation.

Our offshoot project, Sports Buddies, does the same thing but through sports and physical activities.

The Participatory Research Study

This research by Fiona Brand and colleagues at UCL “Understanding Experiences of ‘Gig Buddies’: A Befriending Scheme for People with Intellectual Disabilities” evaluates the experiences and outcomes of our scheme.

Key Findings from Our Participatory Research with UCL

1. Autonomy and Fun

Participants value the autonomy Gig Buddies provides, allowing them to choose activities that interest them. Participants appreciated the autonomy Gig Buddies offered, enabling them to make choices based on their interests, in contrast to other areas of their lives where they have less choice and control.

“She comes up with ideas as well, but most of the time it’s about what I want to do.”

2. Building Connections

The study highlights the importance of shared interests in forming strong bonds between buddies, leading to meaningful and enjoyable experiences.

“If the befriender didn’t like the same stuff you like there’s no point in having them, really.”

3. Promoting Independence

Participants feel safer and more supported in community settings, which encourages them to engage in new experiences and build confidence.

“Since I’ve joined [Gig Buddies] it’s built up like confidence. Now I’m doing a college course and I’m able to talk more in a group.”

4. Reducing Isolation

Gig Buddies effectively combats social isolation, offering participants a sense of belonging and an outlet for social engagement.

“The most important thing for me is basically you’ve got somebody you can meet and talk to.”

Areas for Development

1. Managing Relationship Endings

While essential, relationship endings can cause anxiety. It’s something we talk about with volunteers from day one but it’s never easy. We’re always working on developing better strategies to manage this aspect.

2. Better Integration

There’s an undeniable need for improved integration of people with learning disabilities into mainstream settings. Raising awareness with venues and audiences, and advocating for acceptance remains a priority.

3. Increased Activity Variety

Participants expressed a desire for more frequent and diverse activities. We’ll continue to explore creative ways to offer a broader range of experiences. Especially through the lens of the cost-of-living crises and keeping fun cheap.

Inclusivity in Research

The study calls for more inclusive and co-produced research, ensuring that people with intellectual disabilities are actively involved in study designs. We’re therefore delighted we’ll be continuing our relationship with UCL through our next research project.

Valuable insights from taking a participatory research approach:

The study reaffirms that person-centred befriending schemes like Gig Buddies significantly benefit social inclusion, independence, and well-being for adults with intellectual disabilities. By focusing on shared interests and supportive relationships, Gig Buddies stands out as a valuable model for similar programs.

Gig Buddies is serious fun, and we’re thrilled to see its positive impact!

How ‘Person-Centred Dreaming’ kick-started Heavy Load’s wild journey

Paul, our Executive Director, shares his experience with Heavy Load. He highlights how Jimmy’s support workers used a person-centred approach to help him achieve his dreams.

Instead he suggests we should stop thinking about ‘person-centred plans’ and start embracing ‘person-centred dreaming’. Plus dreams don’t have to be big; even small dreams can be exciting.

Jimmy in New York

Person-Centred Dreaming vs. Person-Centred Planning

Paul believes our current approaches are too rigid. Therefore, he promotes “dreaming,” which focuses on personal dreams and is more flexible.

The Importance of Joy in Social Care

Moreover, joy should guide our work in social care. By incorporating joy, we can improve the lives of people with learning disabilities and bring happiness to workers too.

Supporting People to Achieve Their Dreams

Supporting people to dream validates them. It makes us more invested in their lives. Consequently, this approach can lead to amazing outcomes, like those of Heavy Load.

Being Proactive Support Workers

Furthermore, support workers should be proactive. They need to engage with individuals, follow their dreams, and prioritize this in their lives.

Jimmy’s Amazing Person-Centred Story

For example, Jimmy from Heavy Load had a small dream: to be in a band. His support workers helped him achieve it. As a result, this led to unexpected successes, like playing at Glastonbury and starting this charity.

In summary, supporting people to dream and bringing joy to our work can lead to life-changing experiences for everyone.
