After having to postpone his Irish gigs last month after a bout of laryngitis, punk-poet geezah Jamie T has rescheduled dates next year in bigger venues due to demand. The Londoner is now playing the Mandela Hall in Belfast (upgraded from the Limelight) on February 9 and Dublin’s Academy (upgraded from the Village) on February 10. Tickets for both gigs go on sale at 10am tomorrow, Friday 13, from Ticketmaster and usual outlets. The Academy gig will set you back 18.95 including booking fee, and tickets for the Mandela Hall cost £15.50. If you have a ticket for one of the postponed gigs it’s still valid.

In a MySpace message, Jamie said: “I would like to say thanks to you all for your kind messages and your patience over the last couple of months, it’s been a frustrating time for all involved but I’m happy to say that we will be back on the road soon.” Ah bless.

It’s not easy being Super Extra Bonus Party. Few Irish bands of late have divided opinion to such a degree, from those who consider them one of the most exciting and forward thinking acts we have produced in years to those who, well, think pretty much exactly the opposite. State considers their second album Night Horses to be irrefutable proof of the former opinion. With their largest headlining show to date coming up this Friday night at the Academy in Dublin, we spoke to Gavin and Fatz from the band about love, hate and music…

How do you feel the band has developed since the first record?

Gavin: I think that we are closer to completing the jigsaw in terms of cohesiveness as a unit, how we work as a band and how our musical output hangs together. A lot of people tend to ask us this and I always feel like we belittle the first record a bit – we’re all still fiercely proud of it but for a band like us its a case of progression or being left to wither away, so it was very important for us as a unit to go forward with this and think it shows in the record.

Fatz: The first album was a compilation of different ideas and styles put together by three different groups within the band. We had two electronic producers in Co and Mick, who had been making tunes together for a few years, and then there was Gavin and myself who had come in to the fray to add a live dimension to the already existing songs and offer up some new material of our own.

Did making Night Horses feel like recording a debut in some ways – first as a full band?

Gavin: Yes and no – since we put together the live line-up of the band in order to tour the first record it’s always felt like a complete unit. Obviously Steve and Gary who joined after the first record might have a different opinion but that’s how it felt to me. If anything, recording Night Horses kinda allowed them to put their own stamp on the songs and overall sound of the band, cementing their presence and completing the circuit so to speak.

Fatz: We really pulled together and spent weeks down the country in an empty bungalow just putting as much of our combined energy and input into every song we had. There was a greater feeling of purpose when recording and producing or even just messing with sounds, obviously because we had already released an album and had great success with it, we needed to live up to that success and surpass it.

Did you write the songs on the album with certain singers in mind?

Fatz: We usually just approach people we really like or repect. It doesn’t really matter if we think they might not suit a tune stylistically, once they want to get involved we’re happy.

Gavin: We knew who we would love to work with but we didn’t tailor songs for a specific artist. In the case of ‘Comets’ we sent a demo of the song to Heathers which was a lot more electronic than the version we ended up with, it kind of put them in at the deep end as they had never really collaborated with anyone before, never mind the fact that the song was so different from their own style of music. That track was exciting for us because we enjoy taking chances on the people we work with, sometimes it doesn’t work but when it does…

Did you want to balance Irish and international guests?

Fatz: Again it didn’t matter at all where people come from. We’re proud of our Irish music scene and the artists involved in it, but we wouldn’t make a conscious decision to have as many Irish musos as foreign dudes just for the sake of it.

What reaction were you expecting to the album?

Fatz: We were expecting to be brought down to the docks, sliced open in every imaginable way and have our wounds filled with a thick mix of mashed up chip sticks in Bovril for even dreaming of releasing another album.

Why do you think you have divided opinion so much?

Fatz: Very hard to say. maybe people don’t think we take our music or music in general seriously. Which we obviously do if you take the time to look at what we’ve done. Maybe people are uncomfortable with the fact that we don’t look much like what a band traditionally looks like, and a combination of those things just pisses people off? I don’t know, you would have to ask someone who hates us!! Ask Emilio Estivez!

Did you hope that people might listen to the record and change their minds about the band?

Fatz: No. Just to appreciate it for what it was. Each album stands on its own feet. As long as there is a constant improvement and progression we’re happy. People are entitled to ther own opinion.

How’s it been playing it live?

Fatz: Fuckin savage. We’ve been playing harder and faster than ever. We’re just back from CMJ which has got our taste buds going again for some travelling next year. The Academy is going to ache!!!!

This is getting silly. Following Steven Tyler’s recent appearance on stage with ‘Smiths guitarist Joe Perry and his proclamation that he isn’t quitting the group, Perry has been talking to Rolling Stone. “There was all this commotion during our encore break and somebody said, ‘Steven is here.’ ” Perry says. “And I was like, ‘What?’ ” After exchanging pleasantries, Tyler asked to sit in with the group on the final encore of ‘Walk This Way’. “Being an acquaintance of 40 years, I said, ‘Why not? So he came up and sang and that was the last I saw of him.” Perry says Aerosmith is still considering touring and recording with a new singer. “He wants to take two years off from the band,” Perry says. “The rest of the band wants to keep on working. We have so many different options to fill up that time. Anything is possible at this point. Basically, any communication that we’ve had over the last couple of months has been through managers, so that’s been pretty strange. I never won any money trying to second-guess what goes on in Steven’s mind. I guess this is just Aerosmith business as usual.”

Comedy and music are wonderful bedfellows – witness the zany, seminal humour of Monty Python’s songs or the off-the-wall ditties sung on The Mighty Boosh – and Flight of the Conchords are just the latest in a long line of comedic groups to dabble in music. After working together for more than a decade, Kiwis Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement have become seriously hot property in the comedy world, thanks to their HBO series The Flight of the Conchords, and key to their success is that they’re not just able to trade witty repartees, but they’re adept at writing songs that musically stand up on their own (Bret is even a former member of The Black Seeds). With the first FOTC album, the songs had been many years in the making, as was the basic idea for the TV show in which they were used, which was in turn based on their BBC radio series. But with this latest album, all 13 songs come from the second TV series and the majority have been written only in the past year or two, and in some cases shoehorned into the episodes.

Where the men’s strengths lie is in their musical ability and being able to transfer this to aping bands and genres that they are a fan of. It’s easy to pick out which songs are supposed to sound like which bands – ‘We’re Both In Love with a Sexy Lady’ – R. Kelly; ‘Demon Woman’ – Cliff Richard; ‘You Don’t Have to be a Prostitute’ – The Police – and in this way, each of them is extremely effective. However, this can be quite problematic, as it means that FOTC don’t actually have their own ‘sound’ – sure, most bands are a mishmash of their influences, but in this case FOTC really wear their influences on their sleeve, and it’s hard to see past them.

Then there are songs like ‘Petrov, Yelyena and Me’, an old track which could be seen as nothing less than throwaway. If there was no TV series to back up these songs, this would be a very curious, messy album. But as it is, it’s hard to listen to a genius track like ‘Too Many Dicks on the Dancefloor’ without recalling Jemaine’s awkward dance moves during the scene where this song is played. The Conchords are extremely funny dudes – this is a given. And they’re very good musicians too. But their focus is on their TV show, and not on making albums – and it’s hard to see past that.

If, like me, you’re a FOTC fan and think that the songs are fantastic taken in context, you’ll really enjoy listening to this album and reliving your favourite moments. But if you’re expecting an album proper, you may be somewhat confused. Still, any men that can sing “All these bitches/checkin’ out my britches/put ‘em in a trance/when I wear track pants” (‘Sugar Lumps’) are cool with me.

And on Thursday, 26 November the LMHR Sessions is launched at the basement of Le Cirk Bar on Dame Street, and it’s free for punters. Organisers have put out a call for musicians from any background to get in touch for the new fortnightly open mic events. Artists who want to get involved should email artists@lmhrireland.com with a brief bio and links to some tracks. Spaces will be limited so it’s better to email first, but there’s a chance you can simply turn up, plug in and play. Guests confirmed so far include Sweet Jane (acoustic), Sara Lou, and Dermot Kennedy.

The eighth series of RTE Two’s Other Voices live music show is being recorded next month, with Snow Patrol, Richard Hawley, The xx and The Temper Trap among those pulling up a pew for intimate shows in St James’s Church in Dingle. The full line-ups have yet to be announced, but it promises to be another rock’n'roll communion at the chapel, with shows running from Saturday, 5 December to Wednesday, 9 December inclusive. BBC Radio 1 DJ Annie Mac is the presenter for the upcoming series.

Tickets are €35 and on sale on Monday, 23 November at 9am from tickets.ie. As there are only 60 tickets per night available for each night, it will obviously sell out straight away, so set your alarms. Booking is limited to two tickets per person and a maximum of two nights per person.
