As you should know, this evening sees our fifth anniversary show at Christ Church Cathedral in Dublin, featuring Ham Sandwich (pictured), Heathers and Young Wonder performing alongside the UCD Choral Scholars in aid of Temple Street Children’s Hospital. Some tickets will be available on the door but for those of you unable to make it, you can watch a live stream of the gig via the Cathedral webcam from 8pm. In return it would be lovely if you could make a donation to the hospital here.

Tenacious D to make Academy stop on acoustic tour

Last year they were playing the O2, but Tenacious D will be playing to a much smaller Dublin venue this December. Kyle Gass and Jack Black are set to perform at the Academy on 17th December as part of an acoustic tour aiming to find the beating heart of ‘Fuck Her Gently’, without the twin crutches of amplification and penis-shaped phoenixes.

Tickets will cost €49.50 (inc. booking fee) and got on sale this Friday (17th May) at 9am, available from Ticketmaster or by ringing 0818 719 300.

The xx pick Mount Kimbie, Jagwar Ma as O2 support

The xx have announced two support acts for their gig at the O2 on 26th June. Warp-signed ambient duo Mount Kimbie and Sydney haze-poppers Jagwar Ma have been enlisted to perform ahead of the Coexist trio at their first Irish arena show.

Producer/percussionist Jamie xx will also be making a mad dash along the quays and across the river to make his rearranged date at the Button Factory that evening. Doors for that are at 11pm.

Tickets for the xx at the O2 range from €32.50-36.50 and are currently available from Ticketmaster and all the usual outlets.

Initial Castlepalooza line-up announced

Ghostpoet and And So I Watch You from Afar will headline this year’s Castlepalooza, taking place between 2nd and 4th August at Charleville Castle, Tullamore, Co. Offally. Fight Like Apes, Le Galaxie and Girls Names are among the other acts adorning the line-up with more to be announced in the coming weeks. The current line-up can be seen below.

Button Factory date for Toots & the Maytals

Toots & the Maytals will grace the Button Factory on Tuesday, 30th July. Reggae legend Toots, now 70-years-old, earned a Grammy nomination earlier this year for his 2012 album Unplugged on Strawberry Hill and will come to Dublin as part of his 2013 world tour.

Tickets are priced at €25 (inc. booking fee) and go on sale tomorrow (10th May) at 9am. Tickets will be available from Ticketmaster and all the usual outlets.

Chromatics announce first ever Dublin headlining date

Blogosphere favourites Chromatics will perform at the Village on Thursday, 13th June in what is set to be their first headlining date in the Irish capital. The Kill for Love quartet will be supported by fellow electro-poppers Glass Candy.

Tickets for the gig will cost €20 and go on sale tomorrow (10th May). However, the pre-sale is now live on the POD Presents Facebook page. Click on the ‘Pre Sale’ tab at the top of the page, beside ‘Likes’ to reserve your ticket before they go on general sale.

New Laura Marling – ‘Master Hunter’

Prolific London songstress Laura Marling is on the verge of releasing her fourth – count it, fourth! – album, Once I Was an Eagle, and now lead single ‘Master Hunter’ has a video. The song finds Marling affecting her best southern drawl against a cajoling backdrop of acoustic guitar and excitable percussion. While still distinctly Marling, there’s a sense of sensual unrefinement that you wouldn’t normally associate with a Noah & the Whale collaborator.

Once I Was an Eagle is released on 24th May via Universal.

Justin Timberlake confirmed for Phoenix Park this July

Legitimate pop-star Justin Timberlake will perform at Dublin’s Phoenix Park on Wednesday, 10th July. There’s no word if Timberlake’s gig will feature Jay-Z and qualify as an extension of their joint ‘Legends of the Summer’ tour that is set to take America by storm in the coming months, but we can always hope. Support is yet to be announced.

Tickets are priced at €79.50 and will be available from Ticketmaster on Friday, 10th May at 9am. Tickets will be limited to six per buyer.

MBV, Wu-Tang, Knife added to EP line-up

My Bloody Valentine, Wu-Tang Clan and the Knife have been added to the Electric Picnic line-up that was announced earlier today. All three acts had been strongly rumoured to perform at the Stradbally festival but were held from the initial line-up and confirmed at the EP launch party happening in Fitzwilliam Square, Dublin this evening. A poster boasting the full line-up has also been released and can be seen below.

Black Uhuru, Hudson Mohawke, Mount Kimbie and Palma Violets are among the other notable names added to the bill this evening.

Tickets for the event, taking place from 30th August to 1st September, start at €85 and are available this Saturday (27th April) at 9am.

Björk, Arctic Monkeys top Electric Picnic 2013 bill

The line-up for Electric Picnic 2013 has been announced, with Björk and Arctic Monkeys among the headliners.

Also making their way down to Stradbally, Co. Laois between 30th August and 1st September are Fatboy Slim, Franz Ferdinand, David Byrne & St Vincent, Johnny Marr and Warpaint, with many more included and to be announced in the run up to the festival, this year celebrating its tenth birthday. The full line-up can be seen below.

Tickets for Electric Picnic 2013 go on sale this Saturday, 27th April, at 9am, but there are certain caveats to purchasing tickets this year. If you can prove you’ve been to three or more Electric Picnics or if you can prove have been to Electric Picnic once before, full weekend tickets will cost €149.50 and €169.50, respectively, between 27th April and 27th May. Otherwise, full weekend tickets cost €189.50 until 28th July when the price rises to €229.50. Day tickets cost €85 and all tickets include booking fees.

How can you can prove your viability? Festival organisers have kindly passed the buck onto Ticketmaster, who “should be able to provide fans with proof”. Tickets will be available from Ticketmaster and all the usual outlets.

The Sunday Times Outdoor Film Festival starts today

The Sunday Times Outdoor Film Festival returns to Meeting House Square this Thursday (April 25th), and will be screening a modern classic once a week until May 30th.

Take a second to think about it, and the idea that people en masse would want to enjoy a film outdoors, at night, in Ireland, in May, doesn’t make sense. As ridiculous as the concept seems, the event has proven a hit, so just hold-off putting that parka back in the wardrobe as The Meeting House Square has another load of classics for you to feast upon.

Getting things started is Pixar’s Up (April 25th). Using the first fifteen minutes to successfully break our hearts, the rest of the film, following octogenarian Carl and his accidental side kick Russell on an high flying quest to South America, is dedicated to the task of rebuilding them.

There probably isn’t anyone old enough to attend who hasn’t already seen Back to the Future (May 2nd) and those who haven’t could probably piece together the story from it’s cultural omnipresence. Don’t let the over familiarity put you off though, some things are this popular for a reason.

May 9th brings us Cinema Paradiso; a film about childhood, friendship, cinema, and how incredibly attractive Bridget Bardot was in 1956.

May 16th brings the truly iconic tale of mobster Henry Hill in Martin Scorsese’s peerless, Goodfellas. Scorsese’s eye for storytelling has never been sharper. Featuring career defining performances from Ray Liotta, Joe Pesci and Paul Sorvino.

Next up is the lesser seen but equally revered Citizen Kane (May 23rd ), the debut feature from the tragic –genius that was Orson Welles. Worth seeing if for no other reason than you’ll finally be able to understand all the references made in The Simpsons.

Finally, Richard O’Brien’s Rocky Horror Picture Show (May 30th ) would probably be worth going along to even if you’re unable to get a ticket. Given the long tradition of those attending the theatre performances to show up dressed as the characters, this event would be an abomination if the crowd shows up fully dressed.

Meteor Camden Crawl launches photography competition

Meteor Camden Crawl is offering five people the opportunity to become official photographers at this year’s festival, taking place next weekend (4th and 5th May). The lucky winners of this competition will each get:

Two weekend passes for Meteor Camden Crawl Dublin (winner and a +1)

Media access at all venues

Two passes to the After show party on the Sunday (winner and a +1)

€20 travel expenses

Photos to be hosted on all affiliated sites and social media

The five chosen photographers will then have their work surveyed over by a panel of experts who will choose one ultimate winner, who will receive a Sony XPeria E Mobile, courtesy of Meteor.

To enter, all you have to do is e-mail one photo you have taken at a live gig (that you believe to be of sufficient quality) to camdencrawlphotographer@gmail.com by Monday, 29th April. The winners will be contacted by Wednesday, 1st May.

David Guetta, Calvin Harris to headline Oxegen 2013

David Guetta and Calvin Harris will headline Oxegen 2013, the first since 2011. After it had been announced earlier today that Pitbull, Nero and Labrinth would be joining this year’s bill, a full line-up has been released with the two superstar DJs atop of it.

Also among those performing at the Kildare festival are Chase & Status, Example, Rita Ora and Snoop Dogg, who is apparently no longer a lion. More acts are to be announced before the festival takes place between 2nd and 4th June at Punchestown Racecourse; the current line-up can be seen below.

Early bird tickets will go on sale this Friday (26th April). Three-day weekend camping tickets cost €149.50, and two-day weekend, non-camping tickets cost €129.50 (both include booking fees) and will be available from Ticketmaster and all the usual outlets.

David Kitt, O Emperor added to Helium line-up

A raft on new additions have been made to this year’s Helium Music Festival. The bill for the one-day festival now include the likes of David Kitt, O Emperor, Liza Flume and Kíla among many others announced today. The line-up can be seen below.

The Longford micro-festival will take place on Saturday, 2nd June in aid of Ataxia Ireland with headliners Mick Flannery and Fight Like Apes. Tickets cost €40 and are available from Entertainment.ie or locally from Skelly’s Bar, Ballymahon; Denniston’s, Longford and Rochforts Music, Mullingar.

First Oxegen acts confirmed, full line-up to be announced tomorrow

Oxegen is back for 2013 after a hiatus last year and is set to take place this August Bank Holiday. Despite sharing a line-up with Kinross’ T in the Park in years past, the Punchestown bash has embraced a chart sensibility by the look of this morning’s Facebook announcement.

The first set of acts playing this years OXEGEN festival are:
Calvin Harris, Rizzle Kicks, Jack Beats and Duke Dumont.

The FULL OXEGEN line up will be announced at 7pm tomorrow evening!

We’ll have to wait until Tuesday evening to get a look at the bigger picture, but Kraftwerk supporting Rihanna (as they are at T in the Park) seems doubtful.

Oxegen 2013 takes places between 2nd-4th August at Punchestown Racecourse, Co. Kildare. Early bird tickets will go on sale this Friday (26th April). Three-day weekend camping tickets cost €149.50, and two-day weekend, non-camping tickets cost €129.50 (both include booking fees).

Tickets to this year’s festival are limited to 50,000, but if you purchase your ticket for Oxegen 2013 between 8am on Friday and 8am on Saturday, you will be saving €75 on 2011 prices.

Indiependence 2013 is now set to feature performances from We Are Scientists and Ryan Sheridan. Foy Vance, Walking on Cars, New Sunset Hotel and Cymbals also find a place on a bill that already boasted Bastille and De La Soul.

Indiependence takes place from 2nd-4th August at Deer Farm, Michaelstown, Cork. Weekend tickets start at €79 and are available here.

Yo La Tengo reschedule Vicar St date

Yo La Tengo will perform at the Vicar St on Thursday, 5th December. The American indie veterans were forced to postpone their 23rd March gig at the Dublin venue due to the inclement weather but have now rescheduled and will play their first Irish gig since Forbidden Fruit 2011 in support of their most recent album, January’s Fade. All tickets from the original show are still valid and new tickets will go on sale this Friday (19th April).

Tickets cost €22.50 (standing) and €25.50 (seated), including booking fee and will be available from Ticketmaster and usual outlets.

NEU!’s Michael Rother announces Dublin gig

While his former charges may be headlining Longitude in July, founding member of NEU! Michael Rother has announced a date at the Village on Monday, 29th April. The motorik icon will be joined by his backing band, Camera, for his first ever Irish concert, but they will have the unenviable task of matching the noise created by Death Grips, who will be demolishing Whelan’s at the same time.

Bryan Ferry, Spiritualized on for NCH dates

The National Concert Hall have announced the line-up for their Summer Festival. Taking place over several dates this July and August, the festival will boast performances from the likes of Bryan Ferry, Spiritualized and Sinead O’Connor. While Ferry will perform a career-spanning set with the Brian Ferry Jazz Orchestra on 11th July, Spiritualized will play their 1997 opus Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space in full – their only such performance of 2013. O’Connor is just one of many Irish acts that have been announced, and the full line-up can be found below. British folk-poppers Noah and the Whale have released their latest video for ‘There Will Come a Time’, the first single from their upcoming fourth album, Heart of Nowhere. The video is the official trailer for the short film that will accompany the album’s release, directed by the band’s Charlie Fink.
