I took a peak at a clip floating around on YouTube (do not watch unless you have NO aversion to spoilers!) for the last minute of Incursion, Part Two. I don’t know how long the clip will remain available, but it answered a few questions I had ….

About TJ’s baby. If the clip plays out true, then she will certainly lose the baby (if she isn’t dead), and that will solve one very big problem for the show’s upcoming season two.

I have to say I’ve been surprised by how much better SGU has turned out since its return after the mid-season break. I don’t know if it was because I had time away and was able to get over my expectations for what kind of show I was looking for in Stargate Universe, or if the show really has improved so much. I tend to think most shows don’t hit their stride until they’ve made it past the middle of their first season, and that would seem to fit in this case, but I’d been spoiled by a few very good shows lately that had a great starting bunch of episodes (such as Warehouse 13, Leverage, V, Chuck, and several others).

As for Pain, the episode touched on deep fears and set up some great storylines for a few of the characters, such as James. I’m enjoying Wray and Rush more than ever, with Rush being a character I am beginning to really love. I also feel closer to a few of the other characters finally.

What did you think of Pain?

The Destiny is another opportunity to really isolate the people, but with the constant use of the communication stones, it’s not as tense as it could be. The only reason I can think of to truly keep in contact with Earth (for the writers of SGU) is that without that touchstone, the crew might actually fracture into warring groups looking to gain control…oh wait, they’ve sort of already done that.

What I mean is that the crew members might lose some of their socialized attitudes and beliefs and become even more fractious than they already are.

Without that Earth contact, Col. Young would in fact be the ultimate authority with no one to answer to, and many people can’t handle that kind of pressure. As of yet, I don’t know enough about his core character to know if he could handle it. All I do know is that to him marital vows aren’t necessarily binding and therefore his honor is definitely tarnished unless some kind of mitigating circumstance comes to light later…

I’m speculating here, but it seems to me that Subversion is almost certain to be Earth based.

The Syfy website says Michael Shanks and Richard Dean Anderson will be guest starring in Subversion, so this one is going to be a must watch!

Maybe my break from the show has helped, but it seems fresher somehow. There’s still a focus on character development, but plot is becoming a much more important part of each episode. Too much character too early on might have been responsible for too slow world-building. With a science-fiction show, world-building is what most of us viewers want, well before we start learning so much about the characters.

The writers of Stargate Universe seem to have made a risky choice to do things backward. My opinion is that it might not have been the best choice, but that doesn’t mean it’s not going to pay off in the end. In fact, I hope it does.

Do I think Stargate Universe is getting better? Actually, I do. Lost is pretty darn good.

I have to admit, I still haven’t watched the new episodes of Stargate Universe, but I plan to correct that tonight. I have some free time and I am heading over to Syfy.com to watch the latest 5 episodes online. Don’t know if I’ll make it through all 5, because that’s a lot of video to watch in one night but I’m actually looking forward to it. Sometimes it does help to get a little time away.

I’m disappointed that I’ve missed the first episode of the back-half of the season (Space) on Syfy Rewind, but Amazon sells it for $1.99, and if Divided keeps me entertained, I’ll certainly have to watch Space.

Stargate Universe has not lived up to my expectations and at my end of year review of how I’ve been spending my time, I decided SGU just wasn’t something I wanted to invest my time in. Although I really enjoyed Dr. Rush and Eli, not a single other character on the series has caught my attention and made me like them despite the little I know about them. ("Like" being like as a character with promise, not like as in I want to be their friends!)

The thing is, I love Chuck, Eureka, and Warehouse 13 and unless I suddenly start to hear great things about Stargate Universe, they’ll have to be enough to keep me occupied.

I might not enjoy every episode of Stargate Universe, but I’m still a fan. 

I had been hoping for something lighter, and in fact that’s one of the reasons I’ve always loved the Stargate franchise more than any other science fiction franchise out there. SGU has kind of killed that for me, because even though Eli does offer some comic relief at times, the entire feel of the series is dark.

Dark, dark, dark.

Angst is apparently the new direction, but I’m sad to say, angst has never been my favorite, even when I was part of the young and hip crowd 8-10 years ago.

So… I’m hanging on, hoping the series finds its footing and a nice balance between the angst, action/adventure, and sci-fi.

If you watch this SGU trailer you see so much more than what appears onscreen with each episode. I’d like to know, where’s all that action and excitement they’re promising? I want to see it in the episodes!*

*Time stands out as the single best episode of the season so far. It delivered so much more than any other episode of Stargate Universe this season that it was almost like watching a different TV show.

If you’ve missed an episode, catch up. I have no proof, but I have a feeling that this show is going to rely heavily on previous episodes as each new episode airs. One of the things I always appreciated about Stargate SG-1, and even Stargate Atlantis, was the tendency of the show to revisit previous arcs even though many episodes were stand-alone fare.

I’m hoping we’ll get to see some stand-alone episodes of Stargate Universe, but I am looking forward to the more complexly woven storylines I believe we’ll be seeing.
