NEC Debuts "Universal Translator" Device

Don't let this happen to you! "The days of a Universal Translator like the one that made communication between alien species a non-issue in Star Trek might be some way off yet. But a new device from NEC is definitely a step in the right direction for those of us on planet Earth looking for a way to communicate with other language speakers that doesn't involve a human translator or a well-thumbed phrase book. The prototype device called a "Tele Scouter" is a glasses type display that translates the foreign language being spoken by a partner and projects the translation onto a tiny retinal display." Re-Appointment of Region 11 Regional Coordinator

To: FCAPT Gary Amor the 11th FleetFrom: STARFLEET Headquarters - Office of the Commander, STARFLEETRe: Appointment of Region 11 Regional Coordinator Greetings from STARFLEET Headquarters, In a message dated October 12th, I was informed by the STARFLEET Inspector General, Lt General Wade Hoover, that in the matter of the Region 11 Regional Coordinator election process, sitting Regional Coordinator, Fleet Captain Gary Amor, received the nominations of both chapters of the region and has met the eligibility requirements to continue as the Regional Coordinator. So, in accordance with STARFLEET rules, FCAPT Amor is hereby recognized as the winner of said election and is now re-appointed to the position of Regional Coordinator of Region 11.

CQ and Halloween

Just a reminder that the submission deadline for CQ #156 is two weeks away (November 15). Send submissions to: cq@sfi.org (mailto:cq@sfi.org) And for any chapter hosting a Halloween party, take some decent photos of the better costumes. Granted, that issue won't reach members till Valentine's Day or thereabouts (I'm working on the Christmas issue now), but it's fun to mash-up holidays, right? Anywhoo, remember that photos to CQ should be as high a resolution (large) as possible for print and include the photographer's name, chapter, and a caption identifying all the people in the photo.

The Communications Department is REALLY proud of this one, folks! And when you take a look for yourselves, you'll understand exactly why. Sitting brand new on the sfi.org website in our "Documents" section are two new PDF files: STARFLEET Press Kit (index.php?option=com_docman task=doc_download gid=165 Itemid=58) and STARFLEET Public Relations Guide (index.php?option=com_docman task=doc_download gid=166 Itemid=58). Both were written up and designed by Admiral Brandt Heatherington (PR Director) and myself, with Brandt supplying the initial text and structure and me building on his excellent work.
