Russia to issue stamps for the Sochi 2014 Olympics

The first series of the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics stamps will be issued from January 2011 to 2015. Stamps will depict Sochi, its sports and tourist facilities and Olympic sports.

Olympic philately is rooted in the modern Olympics and was a means of attracting money and interest to the Games. Organizers of the first 1896 Athens Olympics faced financial difficulties and issued series of 12 stamps to save the situation. From 50 thousand to 4 mln stamps were printed and came into circulation on April 6, 1896. Under a decree by the King of Greece, all postage had to be paid by these stamps during the following year.

The first Olympic stamps were a real object of art. The designs, made by French Professor Gillieron, were based on ancient Greek art and architecture connected with the games. French engraver E. Mouchon created the steel matrixes for the stamps. Professor Svoronos, the head of the Athens Numismatic Museum, consulted the designers.

This series is a rear one and very popular with collectors. A 10 lepta-value stamp of this series costs some 200 dollars, says a Russian stamps expert Pyotr Vlasov.

Greece was the most active issuer of sports stamps. Later it was joined by other countries, primarily by Latin America.

Russia and the USSR began to use a sports theme in the mid 1930s to mark the 1928 All-Union Spartakiade. These first sports stamps are still very popular and expensive.

The USSR had its first Olympic stamps in 1960. Since then it has been issuing stamps to every Olympics. Collectors believe that the Sochi Games will significantly contribute to the world's philately.

On September 5, 2010 the Ministry of Communications and Informatization of the Republic of Belarus will issue the stamp “Municipal arms of Khoiniki” from the series “Municipal arms of Belarus towns”.

A municipal arms of Kobrin represents the image of a Spanish shield divided by a flame like line into 2 parts — green and silver. On the green ground there is a gold castle. The flame like line and green colour resemble a fir tree from which the name of the town comes. In this region there are many coniferous forests. A castle of gold colour is a resemblance of the castle built by princes Vishnevetskies in XVII century that is not remained.
The modern municipal arms of Khoiniki is registered in the Heraldic matriculation of the Republic of Belarus on August 14, 2001 under № 65.

25th Formula 1 Hungarian Grand Prix

COVER STORY: Mail Model, a full-size mannequin by Paraparaumu artist Rachel Goodman, took 120 hours and a thousand stamps to complete.

A male mannequin covered in postage stamps is one of about 3500 works by 500 selected artists for sale at the New Zealand Art Show at TSB Bank Arena from Friday to Sunday.

Mail Model, by Paraparaumu artist Rachel Goodman, took about 120 hours and a thousand stamps to complete, with stamps largely from Trade Me, as well as some from her own collection.

Response to the piece has been mixed. "People either really love it or really hate it," Goodman said. The stamps – some dating back to pre-decimal days – brought back memories for some.

"People will look at a stamp and remember what they were doing or how old they were."

Show director Carla Russell said all art in the show was priced between $100 and $5000, with an average price of $500 to $600.

The name of the show – previously the Affordable Art Show – had changed this year because the word "affordable" was associated with poor quality, she said.

"It's exciting to be exhibiting new and current works from emerging artists which are steering away from the representational and landscape art so common in New Zealand."

This move towards emerging artists was shown in the recently announced Signature Piece Award finalists – 10 artists who get voted on by members of the public, to win a $5000 prize – which featured mainly up-and-coming artists.

Among those finalists is Aucklander Clare Kim, whose piece The Red Shoes is a bow entirely drawn in text originally penned by Hans Christian Andersen.

Miss Russell picked Kim as an emerging artist whose work would leap in value in coming years. The Red Shoes has a $3150 price tag.

"Who can do work like that? It's amazing."

Goodman, whose work Mail Model is not up for a Signature award, said the art show was her first time exhibiting publicly.

The New Zealand Art Show runs from 10am to 5pm. Entry costs $10, concessions $7, children free. Art bought at the show can be taken away on the day.

Hong Kong Prepares For Rare Chinese Stamp Auction

International stamp collectors are all aflutter this week as Hong Kong prepares to host an auction of rare Chinese stamps including a copy of the fabled "1897 Red Revenue'' - known as the most valuable Chinese stamp there is.

Hosted by Interasia Auctions, the sale will feature 2,200 lots representing the stamp and postal history of China, Hong Kong and Asia and will be held on July 31-August 1 at the Park Lane Hotel in Hong Kong.

International collectors will be able to bid online for such items as the 1897 Red Revenue Small 2c Green Surcharge which has become known as the "The Red Lady in the Green Dress'' and could sell for as much as HK$10 million (990,000 euros), according to estimates.

Another Red Revenue last February was sold for HK$5.52m (546,000 euros) at the Zurich Asia auction, thereby becoming the most valuable Chinese stamp ever auctioned.

There are only nine known examples of the Red Revenue in existence and two of them reside in the China National Postal Museum in Beijing.

One more interesting item on display will be the examples of the "Elephant'' stamps which were rejected when authorities were deciding on the nation's first stamps in 1877. A dragon design was eventually chosen when the first stamp was released in the country in 1878.

China's rising middle class has only just recently latched on to stamps as a sound investment and that has brought the nation's previously secretive collecting community out into the open - much to the delight of collectors all over the world.

Stamp collecting was banned in China during the Cultural Revolution (1949-1976) - as it was considered a frivolous pastime - and so collectors were either forced to hide their wares away, or ship them overseas for safety.

The title of the world's most expensive stamp goes to a Swedish misprint - the "Treskilling Yellow'' - which was printed in 1855. Originally costing three shillings, it was sold at auction in Geneva in May with sales organizers tight-lipped on whether the new owner topped its previous sales record of 1.59 million pounds (1.9 million euros). It was "still worth more than any other stamp,'' was all they would say.

The first motor car arrived in Jersey at the end of the nineteenth century and shortly after, in 1908, the 'First Annual Parade' of the Jersey Motor Association took pace. Vintage car cavalcades are, to this day, a familiar sight in Jersey and, often, the fine old motors are complemented by their drivers in striped blazers, boaters and bonnets and they never fail to turn heads as they motor around the Island.

New Stamp Celebrates 100 years of Scouting

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Postal Service today awarded scouting its ‘stamp of approval’ to celebrate 100 years of the U.S. scouting movement. The 44-cent first-class Scouting stamp, available nationwide today, was dedicated at the National Scout Jamboree at Fort A.P. Hill, VA, where more than 30,000 scouts from around the nation set up camp for 10 days of premier scouting fun during the organization’s centennial anniversary.

“Scouting showed me the importance of protecting the environment,” said former Boy Scout Sam Pulcrano, who, as the vice president of Sustainability, oversees the Postal Service’s green initiatives. “That is why I am proud of the work we are doing at the Postal Service. We have a long history of environmental leadership and innovation. We were testing electric mail delivery vehicles during the horse and buggy days, and we were recycling long before there was a universal symbol for it. Just as the scouts are famous for serving others and helping their communities, our sustainability efforts are benefiting our families, friends and neighbors in the communities where we live and work.”

Joining Pulcrano in dedicating the stamp were Robert Mazzuca, Chief Scout Executive of the Boy Scouts of America; Terry Dunn, 2010 Jamboree chairman; and Lt. Colonel John Haefner, U.S. Army Ft. A.P. Hill Garrison commander. Emceeing the event was 15-year-old Eagle Scout and Bloomington, MN, native Jeremy Biedny, who earned his stamp collecting merit badge shortly after becoming a scout and discovered a personal passion for stamps.

“We are appreciative that scouting’s centennial will have a place in history with the many great people and events that are commemorated on U.S. stamps.” said Mazzuca. “It is truly an honor to receive the distinction of a commemorative stamp, and we hope that it provides the entire country the opportunity to share in the milestone of our 100th anniversary.”

The design, created by illustrator Craig Frazier of Mill Valley, CA, depicts the spirit and outdoor adventure of scouting through a backpacking scout and a large silhouette of a scout surveying the landscape.

The Boy Scouts of America celebrated its 100th anniversary Feb. 8, 2010. To mark this milestone, the organization has undertaken celebration efforts nationwide that reintroduce the organization to today’s young people and families, reinforcing the value of scouting and reconnecting with the millions the organization has affected. Background. Games of the XXIX Olympiad held in Beijing, capital of China, from 8 to 24 August 2008. Belarus was represented by 181 sportsmen in competitions in 26 sports.
In June 2010 the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne decided to drop all charges in the use of drugs in the Olympics in Beijing, addressed to Vadim Devyatovskiy and Ivan Tikhon and return them to win medals - silver and bronze respectively.
After the decision of the court of Belarus on the basis of the Beijing Olympics finished in 15 place overall standings of the 204 countries participating in the Games. 30 athletes won 19 medals: 4 gold, 5 silver and 10 bronze.

Pope Benedict XVI UK Visit Miniature Sheet

Isle of Man is issuing a two-stamp miniature sheet with label to commemorate the beatification of Cardinal Newman and the first papal visit to Britain since May 1982, when Pope John Paul II's six-day tour drew huge crowds.
Prime Minister extended a formal invitation to the current Pope and the trip is the first official state visit by a pontiff, as that of John Paul II was on a pastoral basis and did not follow an official invitation by the UK government.

The miniature sheet features two stamps featuring Cardinal Newman and a label image of Pope Benedict XVI.

Second set of Royal Mail's London 2012 stamps released

The second set of the Royal Mail's London 2012 Olympics and Paralympic Games stamps feature work by ten different illustrators across ten stamps.
Marking two years until the opening ceremony, the latest batch will go on sale on 27 July. Each stamp depicts one of 29 Olympic and Paralympic sports. This new set follows an initial set of ten, and a third and final set will be issued in 2011.

A Royal Mail design team, headed by David Hillman from Studio David Hillman, approached the 30 designers, allocating a sport to each for the three-year project. Athletics is to be illustrated by two different illustrators in separate track and field stamps.

The stamps include a collage illustration by Marian Hill, which represents Paralympic rowing. Hillman's own illustration shows a bullet-ridden shooting target, a pentathlon montage has been illustrated by Katherine Baxter, and Matthew Dennis has captured a BMX race.

The Royal Mail claims to have consulted the sports' governing bodies and specialist clubs for each stamp, and the three sets have been organised to balance team and individual Olympic and Paralympic events.

Italian Post has issued a stamp dedicated to the great Italian artist Caravaggio.
Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (29 September 1571 – 18 July 1610) was an Italian artist active in Rome, Naples, Malta, and Sicily between 1593 and 1610. His intensely emotional realism and dramatic use of lighting had a formative influence on the Baroque school of painting. Trained in Milan, Caravaggio moved to Rome in his early 20s, where he filled with paintings numerals churches and palazzo.

Caravaggio's novelty was a radical naturalism which combined close physical observation with a dramatic, even theatrical, use of chiaroscuro that came to be known as Tenebrism, the shift from light to dark with little intermediate value. He burst upon the Rome art scene in 1600 with the success of his first public commissions, the Martyrdom of Saint Matthew and Calling of Saint Matthew. Thereafter he never lacked for commissions or patrons, yet he handled his success atrociously.

However, famous while he lived, Caravaggio was forgotten almost immediately after his death, and it was only in the 20th century that his importance to the development of Western art was rediscovered.

New stamp on 'Preserve Polar Regions and Glaciers' theme

On the occasion of visiting Dominican Republic by Mr. Edouard Dayan, General Director of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) and Mrs. Serrana Bassini, Secretary General of the Postal Union of the Americas, Spain and Portugal (PUAEP), the Dominican Post jointly with the Official Philatelic Committee have issued a postage stamp calling attention to the preservation of glaciers and poles, answering on the UPU's invitation to all governments for inclusion in their annual program of an issue with this theme. By the way, Post Offices of many countries took this initiative to participate in the Postal series called International Polar Year.
Every year the consequences of the influence of human actions on the planet take turn to the worse, and specifically those that affect the temperature rising, because of the effect of gaseous pollutants such as CO2. The global warming would have serious effects on the planet if the great powers in general and any citizen of the world particularly wouldn't bring their bit to the arrest or elimination of this problem.

Morocco: Gates of Bab al Bahr Asilah

The Kings of Morocco gave particular importance to the construction of gates and walls of protection in urban localities, not only for defense but also to emphasize their significance in civilization heritage and economic development.
