Llandudno and Conwy will be the focus a two-day rally extravaganza this month organised by Wales Rally GB and the World Rally Championship (WRC) called Rallyfest, featuring established drivers, display cars and exhibition races in the heart of the towns.

Rallying can be described as an epic motorsport adventure and there can be no better backdrop to this fantastic showcase than Llandudno and North Wales.

St Georges Hotel has been involved with many motorsport events over the years from the Three Castles Classic Car Rally to the award winning Cambrian Rally. We are also working hard to showcase Llandudno so that it could be the location for the start of the Wales Rally GB event.

Punch and Judy finally getting married

Punch and Judy are finally going to get married after a stormy 150 year relationship.

It all started back in Llandudno in 1860, some say they actually met at St Georges Hotel and it was only after a few cocktails and a night at the hotel that their relationship really developed.

Punch and Judy now perform on a daily basis between March and September for Professor Codman near Llandudno Pier.

Judy is really going to make the most of the wedding, which is to be held at the Chapel of St Trillo, Rhos-On-Sea.

Judy’s dress for her big day has been specially designed and created by a local Wedding Centre and the flowers for the day come specially prepared by a local florist.

The venue for the wedding breakfast is a closely guarded secret, Nicky Fare the wedding coordinator at St Georges Hotel said,
"We can neither confirm or deny Punch and Judy's wedding will be held at St Georges Hotel. Although we have just had a delivery of 400 strings of sausages and we have an anger management specialist on standby."

A baby crocodile and an officious looking policeman were seen checking into St Georges earlier today.

No doubt we will all find out when the latest issue of Hello magazine comes out next month!

North Wales has it all!

The money which is mostly from European funding and local councils will create four tourism "centres".

In North Wales, more than £6m will be spent improving cycling facilities and activities capitalising "upon the area's outstanding natural beauty".

These centres will provide world class facilities in a wide range of outdoor tourism activities”

The projects include a North Wales Cycling Activity Tourism Centre of Excellence, which includes a £2.2m plan to improve facilities across Denbighshire and Conwy.

The cycling centre at Coed Llandegla, near Wrexham, will be upgraded, and a "natural trail" linking Llangollen, Llandegla, Corwen and the Dee Valley built.

Money will also be spent improving facilities at Betws y Coed and Llyn Brenig in Conwy.

In Snowdonia, more than £4m will go towards the Eryri Centre of Excellence, which will be based across four sites.

There will be an activity centre, and the mountain biking trails at Coed y Brenin, near Dolgellau, will be expanded.

A downhill cycling track will be developed around the old Llechwedd Quarry in Blaenau Ffestiniog, and another will link

Wales Air Ambulance

St Georges Hotel is proud to support a number of vital local charities and organisations through a range of fund-raising events and activities. Through the Autumn and Winter of 2009 many guests of St Georges Hotel kindly donated small amounts of money to the Wales Air Ambulance, a charity which relies on public support to help keep them flying.

The Wales Air Ambulance does not receive direct funding from the government and because they are classed as an emergency service they also fail to qualify for National Lottery funding. The money is therefore raised through charitable donations, fund-raising events, and membership of their lifesaving lottery.

Wales Air Ambulance is an all Wales charity providing a vital service through emergency air cover for those who face life-threatening illness or injuries.

Owing to the widely scattered population and diverse landscape of Wales, many people live in isolated locations far from accident and emergency services. Also, the ever increasing problem of traffic congestion and collisions in more urban areas denotes delayed response times for land ambulances. For these reasons, there is a recognised need for three helicopters on active duty 365 days a year.

Fresh is Best!

Here at St Georges Hotel we take the sourcing of fresh produce for our menus very seriously.

We are not content with just taking our suppliers word for it!

So when our Llandudno fish supplier told us they have the best Crabs and Lobsters in Wales we had to go and check it out for ourselves!

Head Chef Stephen Roberts, a very keen fisherman with very sturdy sea-legs decided that the only way of checking the quality was to actually go and see the seafood at the source - 2 miles out to sea on the Lady Gwen II fishing boat!

Along with Nathan, the Sales and Marketing Manager who has a proud Naval background (2 years in the Sea Cadets!) went to sea to verify the proclaimed quality of the North Wales Lobsters!

So we are the only restaurant in Llandudno who go to the terrifying effort of dosing up on seasick tablets, getting 'waterproofed' up, pulling the lobster pots up from the 20 fathom darkness and sorting out the crustaceans from the other various sea monsters caught in the pot!

Afternoon Tea at St Georges Hotel

Tea, that most quintessential of English drinks, is a relative latecomer to British shores. Although the custom of drinking tea dates back to the third millennium BC in China, it was not until the mid 17th century that tea first appeared in England.

Afternoon tea was introduced in England by Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford, in the year 1840. The Duchess would become hungry around four o’clock in the afternoon. The evening meal in her household was served fashionably late at eight o’clock, thus leaving a long period of time between lunch and dinner. The Duchess asked that a tray of tea, bread and butter (some time earlier, the Earl of Sandwich had had the idea of putting a filling between two slices of bread) and cake be brought to her room during the late afternoon. This became a habit of hers and she began inviting friends to join her.

This pause for tea became a fashionable social event. During the 1880’s upper-class and society women would change into long gowns, gloves and hats for their afternoon tea which was usually served in the drawing room between four and five o’clock.

Traditional afternoon tea consists of a selection of dainty sandwiches, scones served with clotted cream and preserves. Cakes and pastries are also served.
