Power of Blessing

I read somewhere that power of blessing can do wonders, but never imagine that it could work with me one day and give me the reason to believe in the ‘power of blessing’. Last Friday after attending my college, I was going to Tim Hortens to get some Veggi Sandwich as I did not have my breakfast that morning. Near Saffron restaurant somebody called me, “Son help me, I am not an alcoholic, I am hungry, have no money and fare to get back home. Kindly help me”. I offered him food and gave him some dollars for his taxi fare.

He thanked me for help and asked why I wear turban and about Sikhism. His name was Joseph and he was from Austria. I explained him the significance of turban that it makes us distinct from others. About Sikhs, I told him that Sikhs are a pure force of God and are always ready to help those who are in need and for this very purpose they wear turban that anybody who is in need can recognize a Sikh among hundreds. Then another query came about the right pronunciation of word ‘Sikh’ and our discussion went on about meditation and other things. At last when it was quite a time, he grabbed my hand and put close to his chest and said, “God bless you son”. I thanked him and started my journey back home.

When I reached home, I was in great pain because I was suffering from kidney stones. It started during the weekend and the doctor diagnosed that I have two stones in my left kidney. Due to that severe pain I lied down and took a little nap. In the evening, when I woke up and went to the washroom to relieve myself, to my utter amusement one stone was out through urine without any pain and it was almost a centimeter thick. I was happy as my stone was out; stone pain is just like a bullet pain as some body is plundering bullets in your body. Few days later, I had an appointment with Dr. McLoughlin and when I showed him the stone then he said, “It is a miracle to get rid of such a thick stone without any surgery. How you did it”. That moment I realized the power of blessing and I thanked God and Joseph who blessed me that day.

Thanks

best Regards

Raman Rishi

Hi everyone! My second term in Sprott-Show has already started, and I’m full of enthusiasm to continue my study. But event that I want to share with you this week is not about my study. Last weekend first time in my life I saw ocean!

I went there from Seattle, where I had visited my friend. It was sunny and warm Saturday so we decided that there is the best time to see ocean. Trip to the beach took us about three hours, and I fell asleep. When I woke up, I was more than just surprised. There was no sun in the sky, and on-board thermometer showed 18C, that was much colder than in Seattle. Besides there was so foggy, that I couldn’t see further than stretched hand. Despite cold and fog there were lots of people on the beach. Most of them were either surfer or family with children who stayed in the camping. After parking car we were going to see the water, but one more surprise was waiting for us. When we came to the beach there was no water, because of ebb. So we decided to have our lunch first, and then to go to the shore line. As time was going it became colder, because I had no warm cloth with me. When lunch was over I even thought that I don’t really want to go so far on the wet sand to see water. But had traveled so many kilometers and not even see the ocean didn’t sound as good idea, so we were going to the shore line. When we became closer to the water I started to feel how huge it is, even though I couldn’t see too far, because of fog, I could absolutely clear feel it. Next thought in my head was that I want to swim there. It took me couple of second to make decision and next moment I was in the water. The temperature of water was low but I was so excited that couldn’t feel it. I jumped on the huge waves some time and then returned back. After cold water air seem to be very warm. This experience was amazing, and I wish I could see ocean soon again.

SUMMER - It is already summer in Vancouver and the short school break between terms has now ended. Classes started a couple of days ago and this term promises to be busier than the last. I already have lots of homework to do, especially dealing with math-related courses. Math, unfortunately, is not my area of strength.

I would love to be able to enjoy just one or two more weeks of holiday. I would use the time to plan trips and enjoy the tourist attractions and beaches around Vancouver, as well as the islands.

At least, from my window, I can still enjoy wonderfully sunny weather as I study in my room in Burnaby.

It is amazing to experience such warm weather in Vancouver. Actually, I am very excited because this is the first time that I have experienced summer in Canada. Previously, I was exposed to cloudy, cool weather with plenty of rain and, sometimes, even snow. This does not mean that I don’t like snow, because I love winter. It is almost impossible to experience a snowfall in Peru, even at a very high altitude.

I hope Vancouver continues to have this wonderful weather, until I get tired of sweating.

The definition of a Superhero is as follows:
Superhero: a fictional hero having extraordinary or superhuman powers; also : an exceptionally skillful or successful person

Annie Basket

Last year, the Kelowna campus wrote a story about Annie, one of our PN instructors who has survived a rare form of blood cancer. To pay it forward, Annie rode her bike from Vancouver to Seattle to raise funds for cancer.

Annie

This year, Annie did it again! A true Superhero! Surviving yet another year, Annie braved the wind and rain for two days to bike to Seattle. Annie even got back on her bike with a smile after a fellow cyclist forced her off the road! Annie did this not because she had to, but because wanted to help those fight their own battles with cancer. A true Superhero.

But the story does not end there. Being a Superhero is contageous! Annie is a well loved inspirational instructor. Her students heard about her efforts to raise funds for her Ride to Conquer Cancer. Students put together a gift basket with items donated by the entire class and raffled off tickets. Within five days, students were able to raise an extra $605 for Annie’s cause. With pride, students presented Annie with the funds raised.

Superhero’s come in all forms. We all have it in us to be ‘exceptional’….its all a matter of heart, choice and passion. Congrats Annie! Thank you for being our Superhero!

One of my friends visits me from Korea. That is why I need something new every single day to
do with her. The weather of last Saturday was so gorgeous, so I decided to bring her Victoria.
It has been a pretty long time to visit there for me. We took a ferry to be there, and we could
have fun in a ferry. The world cup game was playing on the T.V, we could enjoy them, too.
We got Victoria around 3pm. We had lots of fun at there. Victoria is like another country for
me and felt very comfortable. We could have dinner at restaurant which is very next to the
harbor. We felt that the food was much more yummy. We were so exhausted but had lots of
fun.
I like traveling. Sometimes it costs and takes long time, but I can find about the country which
is I travel and know about many different cultures as well.

We had Thursday off because it was Canada Day, a national holiday. Nursing Arts was really
fun because it includes one entire day of lab. In the first lab, we were taught the proper way
of medical asepsis and practiced to wash our hands. When we start working in a hospital as
a LPN, through this way, we can reduce 50% of nosocomial bacteria that is infectious when
hospitalized. Also, we learned how to make beds and how to occupy beds. This week, we had
two quizzes, Nursing Arts and A&P. In A&P we have weekly quizzes and I felt it was quite
intensive. We have a lot to study because one day lecture covers several chapters at once and
we have quizzes every week. On one point, weekly quizzes can be very helpful for studying,
because they motivate us to work and keep us trying to stay on top of study every week.
This week, we learned different perceptions of culture. Since we should interact with a
lot of patients and coworkers from many different cultures and ethnicity, we are learning how
to perceive different cultures and communicate in a respectful manner. It was very helpful for
future nurses.

On Canada day, it was also my husband’s birthday. So, we went out to a park for a
picnic. In West Vancouver, there were a lot of event going on for Canada day. It was a little
bit cloudy but I enjoyed it a lot. We ate lunch that we prepared and took a sea walk. I had a
wonderful time on the Ambleside Park. It took all my stress away.

Now, I very challenging semester for me. I will be with Alex in Business Law, Francisco in Macro Economic, Thomas in Financial management and Marie in Business Communication. Alex started the first class with some movie watching and a very interesting hypothetical case named “The Case of the Speluncean Explorers” to make me want to know more about the class; Francisco is still as usual, fun but has principles, and he can always make the class very easy to understand; Thomas is al well prepared for his lecture using all the possible methods to make us understand the concepts and formulars; Marie is very detail and enthsiastic.

I feel lucky to be with all these teachers in this semester.

Still remember how easily I could feel fun when I was a kid.

Every time, after we ate lychee,we picked those big pits, cut them into half, kept the lower part, and sticked a tooth pick on,and turned them into peg-tops…It was enough to keep me busy for a whole summer afternoon just to see peg-tops turning around and around.

How happy and careless I was as a kid.

But,I just found that,if I want,I could still indulge myself into that kind of fun after grew up.

I just found myself a big pack of gummy bears from safeway a couple days ago.

Instead of eating gummy bears as gummy bears,I did something else with it.

I poured about 200ml milk into the pot, boiled it,and then, let all the gummy bears jump into the boiling milk.

Oh,poor little gummy bears, about 16 of them, all melted into the milk as the milk continued boiling.

As the gummy bears all melted down,I poured the liquid gummy bears into a bowl and kept it in the fridge.

In the next morning, when I opened the fridge,a bowl of pinky jello is already waiting for me to enjoy.

That was my gummy bear transformation story.

Hmm.Yummy.And for all the gummy bears losing your life into the boiling milk and turned into a bowl of beautiful jello for me to enjoy,I will not forget how you served me,and I will always remember that you were a bunch of cute gummy bears.

That was what I did last week, and I was really happy for making myself jello.

What did you do to make yourself happy?

This is Shannon. My PN program in East Vancouver campus last Monday. There are 22 people in my class. All of them are from many different countries. There are a culturally and ethnically diverse group of people. I was very excited to talk to them and get to know them. On the first week, our instructors tried to break ice in the class by introducing ourselves and we already became good friends. I met all my instructors who will be teaching us for the year. They were very humorous and supportive of us.Practical Nursing program is one of renowned programs in Sprott-Shaw and known to be very intensive. It’s an one-year-course, made up of 3 semesters of 4 months. This semester, I will be studying 6 subjects, Health, Human Relationship, Nursing Arts, Healing, and A &P. I received 17 textbooks to study for the whole year. Though a little overwhelmed, I feel confident because I have classmates to study with and kind teachers to help us. I have been always interested in human body. So I look forward to learning about the human. Also, I joined a study group with some of our classmates, since the instructors recommended to do so because it is critical to study effectively. For the last three days, the weather was so nice and my husband and I went out to the park and study there. I feel very healthy now and grateful that I was given such a wonderful opportunity. After one year of PN program, I hope I will successfully pass the national LPN exam and become a practical nurse.
