Bang Boom is the scenographic lamp presented by german designer Ingo Maurer at Milan during Design Week 2010. Made with paper and printed graphics mounted on a metallic net structure. Despite the simple materials used the piece strikes for its visual impact.

Linear, slick and wooden would probably be the three words that best describe the Troag lamp by Luca Nichetto for Foscarini.

Behind the lamp a very precise brief: a linear lamp to be used in contract but also in domestic spaces, and the not necessarily related intuition of the designer of using wood. The outcome is a hot pressed plywood piece with a simple yet very recognizable profile obtained with the use of a five axe milling machine and a big attention to details.

This is what pushed Fred Gooris to design the beautiful yet highly performant Bamboo baby rocker.

Using a rather simple aluminum frame and an accurately designed elastic textile cover, the seat offers the security and comfort little ones need, in a dynamic way. The elasticity of the textile plus the flexibility of the structural frame allows controlled bouncing, babies learn to chose the position by adjusting their weight.

Bamboo is entirely developed and manufactured in Italy by Bombol.

A metallic frame holds a fiberglass shell, and a pocketed outer layer made of an elastic 8mm thick textile (yes, you read correctly, 8mm thick!) is filled with foam, one separate piece of foam for each hexagonal shaped pocket which is then closed with a zipper.

Born out of the intention of re-interpreting the traditional Chesterfield sofa into a more comfortable version and inspired out of the sight of a deflated soccer ball, the creative duo aimed at achieving a sofa that would not only be but also look as the very essence of comfort.

Design is knowingly a wide discipline. Designers have different approaches to the creative process and I'm fascinated by each of them; mannerism, functionalism, minimalism, holistic, reuse, whatever intellectual activity triggers the creation of outstanding products makes me smile. I've come to understand there is a common factor in each of the many and variable products that make me personally smile: an idea. Meaning that tiny, revolutionary, simple, refreshing click that makes any new object really new and worth it.

Japanese creative trio 3-1 design formed by Aihara Kazuhiro, Hara Miho and Tomoya Yoshida came up with a little brilliant idea: sewing a stainless steel thread into a piece of cloth ads on that minimun structure needed to shape it into a brief container, a delicate food cover or a perfect wrap.

Origane
Designer: 3-1 design

Company: not in production

Year: 2010

Materials: cloth and stainless steel thread

By soaking half of the strings in a polymer, which is later heated into a harder state, and sewing the strings into a honeycomb structure the resulting textile presents two faces: the harder, structural one and the soft, comfy one.
While the final products could surely be further thought out, the material the two designers have created is a delight to both, senses and brains.

I'm not in love with the final shape and the proportions of this chair, but the idea is simply brilliant.

Upholstery is a technique that hasn't changed much with time and remains a highly handicraft process. Gilli Kuchik from Israeli design group Bakery explores the opportunities of industrializing upholstery and comes up with a fantastic idea where structure and upholstery become one. The textile is arranged in layers, which are sewn with each other creating a pattern that is also a path; the interstitials in fact are filled with different density polyurethane that structures the chair body and donates the needed softness.
